In this study, a pilot-scale subsurface wastewater infiltration system (SWIS) was deployed to study landscape water treatment. The goal of the study was to investigate the effects of hydraulic loading on pollutant removal and the spatial distribution of biofilm properties in SWIS. Results showed that the efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) removal degraded as hydraulic loading increased. Furthermore, quantities of the biofilm properties parameter s increased with the hydraulic loading. Polysaccharide and protein levels ranged from 560 to 1110 μg/g filler and 60 to 190 μg/g filler, respectively, at a hydraulic loading of 0.2 m/d. At a hydraulic loading of 0.4 m/d, the quantities of polysaccharide and protein ranged from 1200 to 3300 μg/g filler and 80 to 290 μg/g filler, respectively. Biofilm intensity and biofilm activity per unit weight decreased with the increase in hydraulic loading.

The objective of this experimental study was to examine whether an assisting layer of lightweight expanded clay aggregate (LECA) of the granulation 1-4 mm, introduced into a subsoil, is able to improve an efficiency of removal of total nitrogen and total phosphorus from domestic wastewater. In the investigations, an assisting 0.10 and 0.20 m thick LECA layer was applied. It has been observed that the effectiveness of removal of total suspended solids (TSS), total nitrogen and total phosphorus from wastewater as well as the level of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5 ) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) is in accordance with the Polish standards on wastewater disposal into grounds and surface water. The performed experiments showed that the effectiveness of raw wastewater purification for the medium sand soil bed with the 0.20 m thick assisting LECA layer is higher than for the 0.10 m thick assisting layer. In the medium sand soil bed with the 0.20 m thick assisting LECA layer, the removal efficiency regarding total nitrogen increased by 20.6%, total phosphorus by 5.2%, ammonium nitrogen by 8.8% and TSS by 5.3%, and reduction efficiency regarding BOD5 increased by 1.7% and COD by 2.3% with relation to the 0.10 m thick assisting LECA layer (all percentages - in average). The results of the experiment showed that the LECA with the granulation 1-4 mm can be used to assist in removal of total nitrogen and total phosphorus from wastewater with application of infiltration drainage.

A pilot-scale subsurface wastewater infiltration system (SWIS) was designed for the treatment of polluted river water. The components of microbial communities have been identified and characterized and their dependences on some indicators of biofilm formation in the SWIS have been determined. The average efficiencies of COD, TN and removal were 43.3%, 28.8% and 79.6%, respectively. According to the denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) profile, high intensity and uniform bands were generated, indicating an abundant microbial community in each layer of the SWIS. Furthermore, the Shannon index analysis showed high correlation to the spatial distribution of microbial communities as well as the quantity of biofilm in each sample, which were characterized by measuring volatile suspended solids (VSS), phospholipids, proteins and polysaccharides. Sequencing of partial 16S rRNA gene fragments revealed that the composition of the total bacterial communities was dominated by Alphaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, Deltaproteobacteria, Pseudomonas, Bacillus, Flavobacteriaceae, TM-7, and other uncultured bacteria. These bacteria may contribute to nutrient removal in SWIS. +4 NH –N

Celem artykułu było określenie możliwości i celowości zastosowania filtrów doczyszczających przed odprowadzaniem ścieków do ziemi w kontekście spełnienia warunków aktualnego Rozporządzenia Ministra Środowiska z dnia 18 listopada 2014 r. w sprawie warunków, jakie należy spełnić przy wprowadzaniu ścieków do wód lub do ziemi, oraz w sprawie substancji szczególnie szkodliwych dla środowiska wodnego. Ze względu na spodziewane w praktyce zastosowanie i popularność jako warianty porównawcze zastosowano reaktory o bardzo prostej konstrukcji. Porównano uśrednione wartości zmniejszenia BZT5, ChZTCr i zawiesiny ogólnej dla trzech technologii filtrów doczyszczających: złoża biologicznego zraszanego z naturalną wentylacją, filtra piaskowego odkrytego oraz filtra włókninowego. Dodatkowo jako czwarty wariant zaprezentowano prosty model matematyczny i pozwalający na oszacowanie BZT5 na odpływie z biologicznego złoża zraszanego celem zinterpretowania danych empirycznych. Model ten mimo dużej przydatności jest rzadko stosowany w naszym kraju. Stwierdzono możliwość zmniejszenia powierzchni infiltracji (rozsączania) na skutek zastosowania filtrów doczyszczających (powierzchnia po redukcji stanowi 38–63% powierzchni wejściowej). W przypadku dużego pierwotnego zapotrzebowania powierzchni pod drenaż rozsączający zysk w kosztach (kilka tysięcy złotych) wynikający z jej zmniejszenia może nawet znacząco przekraczać koszt zakupu taniego filtra doczyszczającego. Dodatkowo zmniejszenie zajętej powierzchni działki (w skrajnych przypadkach nawet o 100 m2), dzięki zastosowaniu filtra doczyszczającego, umożliwia wykorzystanie niezajętej powierzchni na inne cele i daje w ten sposób dodatkową korzyść ekonomiczną.
The aim of the article was to determine the feasibility and advisability of the use of secondary filters applied before discharge of wastewater into the ground in the context of the fulfillment of the conditions of the current Regulation of the Minister of Environment of 18 November 2014 on the conditions to be met during the discharge of wastewater into the water or the ground and on substances particularly harmful to the aquatic environment. Due to expected in practice, an application and popularity, as compared variants, reactors having a very simple construction were used. The average values of removal of BOD5, COD and total suspended solids for three secondary filters technologies: biological trickling filter with natural ventilation, sand filter and nonwoven filter were compared. Additionally, as a fourth option a simple mathematical model has been presented. This model allows to estimate of BOD5 at the outflow from biological trickling filter and to verify the empirical data. Despite a large usefulness, it is rarely used in our country. It has been found the possibility of reduction of the infiltration area (surface area after reduction is 38–63% of the initial value) due to the application of secondary filters. In the case of a high initial demand of the terrain area for drainage localization the benefit in costs resulting from the reduction (several thousand of PLN) or may even significantly exceed the cost of buying and installing a cheap secondary filter. In addition, reduction the occupied area of the lot (in extreme cases up to 100 m2) by using the secondary filter allows to use the unoccupied space for other purposes, and thus gives additional economic advantage.

The most of the on site wastewater treatment systems in Poland discharges treated effluent to the soil. The goal of phosphorus (P) reduction from dispersed sources of pollution can be achieved by application of P reactive materials in the construction of wastewater infiltration systems. Two P reactive materials were tested in this study: Polonite® in grains of 2÷6 mm and lightweight aggregate Leca® in grains of 4÷10 mm. Apparent P sorption capacity was assesed on 40.9 mg·g-1 (Polonite®) and 5.1 mg·g-1 (Leca®). Both materials sorbed P-PO4 very fast, after 15 min over 90% of P was removed from solution and wastwater. Wastewater used in this study came from the outlet from the septic tank of on site septic system. P-PO4 solution was prepared from KH2 PO4 and the tap water. In the small column experiment, four collumns (2 filled with Polonite® and 2 filled with Leca®) were fed with wastewater and P-PO4 solution in hydraulic loadings of 30÷40 dm3 ·m-2·d-1. All the columns removed significant amounts of P from both solution and wastewater with the reduction between 28.3% and 72.5%. The mean P-PO4 effluent concentrations ranged from 1.21 mg·dm-3 to 7.12 mg·dm-3. The best overall performance was achieved by the Polonite® fed with solution. Both tested materials can support wastewater treatment in on site systems.

The study has been carried out at two experimental sites. It aims to assess the impact of the reuse of raw wastewater, purified and diluted with conventional water on the physicochemical quality of soils compared to irrigated soils with conventional drilled water and non-irrigated soil. The obtained results show that the electrical conductivity EC and sodium gradually increase in all the plots irrigated with wastewater. Additionally, a slight increase in the pH levels at the first site and a slight decrease in the second site was seen, but at both sites the soils remained alkaline. The infiltration rate of water slide decreases in relation to the amount of irrigation, especially in plots irrigated by raw and treated wastewater. For the same plots, the values of organic matter increased, and the values obtained for the exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP) became high in the third year and reached 17.0% and 16.7% respectively.
