Opis:
Waste disposal in landfill sites causes a potential hazard for the human health, as they release substantial amounts of gas, odours and pollutants to the environment. There have been vast reductions in the volume of waste being landfilled in many European countries and a reduction in the number of illegal landfills. The European Parliament’s laws obliged the Member States to amend the national waste law; the main objectives of the implemented directives are to create the conditions for the prevention of excessive waste. Directive 2008/98/EC establishes, as a goal for 2020, that waste reuse and recycling reach 50% of the total waste produced. Poland, having joined the European Union, committed itself to implementing many changes related to waste management. The amendment of the law on the maintenance of cleanliness and order in the municipalities imposed new obligations regarding the waste management (WM) on the local government and residents. By adopting a municipal waste management system, the selected municipality made all its residents responsible for their waste. However, the fact of introducing changes does not solve the waste problem. The implementation of EU directives and the development of strategic documents such as the National Waste Management Plan (NWMP) have made a clear change in the WM approach. One of the changes was the establishment of selective collection of municipal selective waste (MSW), with the issue of collecting the waste by the residents being a priority. This work describes the legal context of selective collection of MSW as one of the most effective means of reducing the amount of waste being landfilled.

Opis:
Municipal solid waste collection points (MSWCPs) are places where residents of municipalities can leave their waste free of charge. MSWCPs should operate in every municipality in Poland. The Geographic Information System (GIS) and analytical hierarchy process (AHP) were used in conjunction as tools to determine potential locations of MSWCPs. Due to possible social conflicts related to the location of MSWCPs, three variants of buffer zones for a residential area were adopted. As a result of the spatial analysis carried out using the GIS software, 247 potential locations were identified in variant no. 1 (which accounted for 7.1% of commune area), 167 for variant no. 2 (6.3% of commune area), and 88 for variant no. 3 (3.8% of commune area). The most favourable locations for MSWCPs were determined using the AHP method with additional criteria for which weights were calculated as follows: the area of a designated plot (0.045), actual designation of a plot in the local spatial development plan (0.397), distance from the centre of the village (0.096) and the commune (0.231), and population density of a village (0.231). The highest weights (over 50%) in the AHP analysis were obtained for 12 locations in variant no. 3, two of which had an area over 3 ha. The adopted methodology enabled to identify quasi-optimal solutions for MSWCP locations in the analysed rural commune. This research has the potential to influence future waste management policies by assisting stakeholders In the MSWCP location.

Opis:
In Morocco, solid household waste is often disposed of in open air in unsuitable sites, causing adverse effects on humans and the environment. In the province of Settat, there are eight uncontrolled landfills. The present study aimed to determine the most suitable sites from an environmental and economic point of view to ensure good management on a regional scale. The investigation involved a combination of a multi-criteria method (the AHP analytical hierarchy process) and a GIS geographic information system (ArcGIS) with ten criteria: distance from the ground water, water surfaces, drilling, settlements, forests, roads, highway, land use, slope, and elevation. The suitability map showed that about 18.5% of the study area is suitable for installing a sanitary landfill.

A circular economy at the enterprise level requires a structural transformation of the business model and the appropriate adaptation of various management functions. The aim of the article is to show the economic possibilities of circular economy, selected areas and tools that can be the key to radical improvement of sustainable results, creating environmental, social and financial value. The attention was paid to the benefits and challenges of circular economy, to the hierarchy of ways to deal with waste. It was emphasized that the opportunity for new business models of the circular economy, especially the Zero Waste concept, is to ensure the further economic growth of enterprises when designing and managing products and processes in such a way as to avoid and eliminate waste as much as possible and promote the saving and recovery of all resources.

Opis:
Purpose: The purpose of this paper was to present the activities undertaken in the area of waste management by Polish enterprises participating in the EMAS system, operating in the water supply, sewage and waste management and remediation branches. Design/methodology/approach: The grounds for the assumed research method was the analysis of secondary sources in form of environmental statements. The selection of sample was targeted, the research was complete and included 19 companies participating in EMAS, dealing with water supply, sewage and waste management and remediation. Based on the analysis, groups of most frequent activities in the area of waste management have been determined and specific solutions implemented in each group have been presented. Findings: Polish enterprises mostly performed activities relating to: public educational campaigns, use of a system of measurable indicators, waste treatment or disposal and modification of waste treatment installations. It has been found, despite the fact that research has been made among organisations whose activity mainly involves positive environmental impact, that presented solutions could be implemented or inspire not only businesses with a similar profile, but also those whose operations entail producing and introducing waste to the environment. Research limitations/implications: A certain limitation of the research is the fact that information in environmental reports is not uniform, which makes it difficult to analyse. Not every organisation includes data on specific implemented activities in their environmental reports. The areas of further research may include analysis of solutions implemented by Polish manufacturing companies participating in EMAS, relating to waste or energy efficiency. Practical implications: The key input of the described research includes examples of specific actions that could be implemented by organisations dealing with various types of activity in order to prevent production of waste or reduce the volume of waste. Social implications: This paper describes exemplary solutions that could help organisations in improving their environmental performance relating to waste. Originality/value: The results of conducted research may supplement the previous research concerning the EMAS system. This paper contains guidelines and examples of specific activities that organisations could implement in the field of waste management.

Opis:
This research goal was to analyze food industry waste in Padang City based on Food Recovery Hierarchy and 3R concept. Waste sampling refers to SNI 19-3964-1994 with 35 sampling points spread across 6 types of food industries. According to the sampling result which includes waste generation, composition, and characteristics, the management of the food industry in Padang City was studied based on the principles of Food Recovery Hierarchy and 3R Concept. The result of the study showed that waste generated is 27.44 tons/day or equivalent to 250.31 m3/day with the organic waste as the largest contributor having percentage of 85.06%. On the basis of the chemical and biological characteristics, such as water content, C/N ratio, and biodegradability fraction, the waste shows that the most compatible treatment for the waste is biological treatment with composting. First step in the principles of Food Recovery Hierarchy is applying the concept of waste reduction to the waste resulted from each industry in as many as 2.19% or 4.83 kg/day. In the second step, 44.295 or 99.92 kg/day of the waste were given to livestock. The third step involved composting 39.27% or 86.72% of the waste. The fourth step was to do landfilling with 1.77% or 3.90 kg/day of the waste. The fifth step was selling 12.48% or 25.40 kg/day of the waste that has a recycling potential to collectors based on the 3R concept. If these concepts are applied, the waste taken to the dumpsite will decrease from 16.24 tons/day to 0.49 tons/day.
