Opis:
The article is a collection of thoughts that transpired during the work at the Archive of Włodzimierz Odojewski. The aim of the authors was to identify and indicate the potential ways to study the life and works of the writer, and the expected result of the research is a biography of Odojewski. The research was based on the exploration of the writer’s private collection: unpublished documents, manuscripts, typescripts, personal papers, correspondence, family and estate papers and photographs. The authors focused on a number of issues. One, the biographical facts that influenced Odojewski’s output – World War II, frequent relocations, censorship and a ban on publishing in Poland, emigration, the relation with the Polish Institute in Maisons-Laffitte and working at Radio Free Europe’s editorial office. Two, the analysis of literary works including hundreds of typescripts in many variants (related to the phases of the genetic history of a literary work through the stages of Odojewski’s life) which allowed for describing Odojewski’s writing techniques. Three, ‘The writer’s map’ which points out places important for the author – Poznań, Gniezno, Kłecko, Podole,Szczecin, Warsaw, Paris, Berlin, Munich. Four, the correspondence (personal and cultural) which can be used as an important source of knowledge of the history of Polish post-war emigration. One of the most interesting parts of the collection is a collection of letters from Jerzy Giedroyć that show Polish culture outside the Iron Curtain.

Opis:
This text is an attempt to present and analyse the journalism (in the convention of feuilletons) of Karol Zbyszewski (1904-1990) in the Paris weekly “Słowo”. The article provides an insight into a little-known episode in the writer's work and exposes the views he presented a few months after the tragic September 1939 for Poland. The most important issue Zbyszewski took up in his feuilletons was his criticism of the The Sanation, responsible according to him, for Poland’s failure in the 1939 campaign. The President of the Republic of Poland, Władysław Raczkiewicz, protested against the extremely harsh words used by the journalist in one of his articles.

POLISH COMMUNITY IN LONDON
Opis:
This article describes issues related to the internal complexity of the Polish community in Britain, and the mutual relations between its members. The case of London, a city with the highest concentration of Poles in the UK is considered. The starting point for the analysis is a presentation of the circumstances of Polish emigration to Britain after World War II, in the period of political transformation, and in the first phase of the post-accession flow. Later, the paper compares the postwar and the post-accession migrants - their spatial distributions, employment structures, and housing situations. Lastly, the article presents the factors which determine the contacts between the members of the Polish community. Undoubtedly, what is very important are the differences in the type of migration, which was either political or economic.

Opis:
The nature of the modern military operations conducted on Ukrainian territory has generated a wave of mass emigration focused on the nearest safe areas. Poland, too, as one of the neighbouring countries, is a fundamental migration target for war refugees. Russian armed aggression began in February 2014, and on February 24, 2022 turned into a regular war. As a result of martial law, a number of children, women and the elderly (over 60 years of age) range seek protection on Polish territory. The influx of people became the basis for the creation of an important law of March 12, 2022 on assistance to citizens of Ukraine in connection with the armed conflict on the territory of that country. The legislation regulates the rules of legalization of residence, guarantees access to the labour market, health care, as well as benefits and social assistance. A number of aid measures issued for Ukrainian migrants, high inflation as well as Russian propaganda used for information warfare have negatively affected public sentiment towards factors shaping security. Therefore, an analysis of selected security sectors identifies threats as well as problem areas along with opportunities to ensure security.

The article attempts to present one of the extremely important themes in the work of Barbara Gawryluk, which is emigration and the creation of a new home abroad. The author of the article, referring to selected works by the Krakow writer, tries to present how Gawryluk constructs the motif of a journey and the topos of the home and read the meaning that the writer gives to these spaces. The researcher notes the differences between the literary images of emigration caused by difficult economic conditions and the images of refugees forced to leave their homeland to save their lives.

The Ways of the Diaspora in the narrative of Claudio Magris – One of the themes in the works of Claudio Magris is that of the frontiers between nations which have been divided by arbitrary political decisions. This is the case with Central Europe, which forms a sort of transnational melting pot and which has hosted the Hebrew Diaspora. The theme of the Diaspora plays a key role in many of Magris books, in particular Lontano da dove. In his recent novel, Non luogo a procedere, one of the topics is the slave trade, a sort of African Diaspora.

The purpose of this article is to reconstruct the emigration experiences of the main characters in Jozefa Radzymińska’s poem Opowieść o cudzoziemcach and to identify points of contact with the biography of the writer herself, who lived in Argentina for fourteen years after World War II. Radzymińska described the influence of great historical processes on the lives of individuals, she reflected in the work the stages of becoming an emigrant (i.e. shock, suffering, struggling with reality, stabilization), and she referred to her own experiences, which is confirmed in her reminiscence works. Opowieść o cudzoziemcach belongs to a circle of literature that preserves the history of Polish exile. The autobiographical motifs present in the poem, as well as the combination of the individual perspective with the collective experience, allowed the writer to reflect not only the realities faced by Polish emigrants, but above all to draw a portrait of their souls torn by a longing for their homeland.

Opis:
The post-war life history of Aleksander Ładoś remains the least-known period of his life. After completing his mission as head of the Mission of the Republic of Poland in Bern in summer 1945, he remained in exile. Thanks to his position in the community of the Peasant Party, he was selected the representative of the Polish Peasant Party headed by Mikołajczyk for Western Europe. At the end of the 1940s, he withdrew from the public life and was repatriated to his homeland in 1960. The rich documentation of the PRP’s intelligence service, made available several years ago, provides a clearer vier of the circumstances of his return, above all to restore his “operational dialogue” over several years with members of the Security Service.

Opis:
Ernst Wiechert’s prose written in the 1930s is best symbolized by Friedrich Hölderlin’s poem "Abendphantasie" (1799), in which the persona describes his loneliness and resignation, describing them as a thorn in his chest. The question of the identification of these feelings with the East Prussian writer is a major problem raised in the article. Wiechert certainly belongs to the group of writers associated with the so called Inner Emigration, and the studies by Herbert Wiesner, Ralf Schnell, Reinhold Grimm and Friedrich Denka support this thesis. Also, the method developed by Hubert Orlowski allows us to include or exclude literary works from inner emigration literature. This method turns out to be helpful in the interpretation of Wiechert’s works. Moreover, the question of Wiechert’s position on National Socialism is considered, which is full of contradictions, as well as his coming close to the Inner Emigration. On the basis of selected prose works created in the 1930s (e.g. "Die Hirtennovelle", "Die Majorin"), the writer’s evolution from the ‘breakthrough of grace’ to becoming an inner emigrant will be presented. Particularly noteworthy are some relevant themes in his works such as World War I, the mother figure as a prefiguration of the ‘Great Mother’ myth, the writer’s stand on National Socialism or the Mazurian landscape.

The main objective of this paper is to present a change in the attitudes among Bundists towards emigration in the post-war Poland. The program of the Jewish Labour Bund throughout its existence was based on three pillars: here-ness (doykayt), family-ness (mishpokhedikayt), and Jewish-ness (Yiddishkayt). After the Second World War some of them lost their significance. Many Jews, including Bundists, saw their future outside Poland. In the article I will show different attitudes of the members of the Bund towards emigration, as well as the reasons behind their choices: either to stay in Poland or to leave the country.

However, this is also a fascinating record of the post-war state of the social consciousness of the nuclear threat, its course, effects etc., which can be regarded as the second thesis of the article.

Opis:
Initial discussions on the project of creating the Polish University Abroad were held as early as September 1939 in Switzerland. Decision was made to establish such an entity in Paris, with its headquarters at the Polish Library. Even before its inauguration, the University had been gathering information about Professors, Associate Professors and Assistant Professors from the Polish universities, who managed to escape from occupied Poland, as well as those ones remaining in Poland. A list of 150 names of Professors and Associate Professors and about 80 Assistant Professors was created. In that academic year about 80 Professors and Associate Professors and 60 Assistant Professors from the Polish universities were in France. Documents le¡ by them show today all goals and tasks, of which present Polish University Abroad in London is the successor. e historical continuity of the university exists on three levels: sta, ideas and structure. Summarising and emphasising the words quoted by the Rector: „e founders of the Parisian university, who participated in further formation of PUNO in 1947, led their research and teaching activities both in Paris and then in London”. The ideological goals and ethos of the Polish University Abroad in Paris were closely related to the educational mission, which is even now: to represent all Polish universities and to maintain the continuity of the Polish higher education in the world. A¡er the Second World War it allowed Polish soldiers, their families, refugees and emigrants to continue or commence higher education in Polish outside of Poland as well as to develop scientific research and publish the results worldwide. PUNO mission now is to serve all generations of Poles who, outside their mother country or the land of their forebears, wish to continue their academic studies, broaden their knowledge of the contemporary world and maintain contact with Polish science and culture. The University’s aim is also to promote Polish science and culture in the UK and even further – worldwide, thanks to participation in global research projects. The Polish University Abroad in Paris had the Humanities, the Legal and the Economic Department. The first department established at the Polish University Abroad in London was the Humanities Department, followed by the Legal and the Economic ones. The Humanities Department was a leading department in Paris and remained such at the Polish University Abroad in London.

EARLY GLOBALISATION BEFORE WORLD WAR I
Opis:
In the modern period, Luxembourg used to be one of those countries which traditionally sent out emigrants to various parts of the world (Europe, South and North America). A very high percentage of the population had been leaving the country. As of the 1880s the southern part of the Grand Duchy became a part of an industrial zone covering Lorraine and the Saar Basin where the heavy industry was developed – ore mines, steel mills, iron foundries. At that time the region attracted immigrants from the territory of Luxembourg and, increasingly often, also form other countries – Germany, Italy, France, Belgium. Nevertheless emigration from Luxembourg continued. Thus, at the turn of the century the country which produced a sixth of the worlds pig iron remained a land of emigration. A complete explanation of this paradox requires in-depth studies on the economy of the region. This should lead to answering a more basic question: when and under what circumstances did traditional migrant sending countries start to receive them? This article recalls basic facts and statistical data and presents the tendencies dominant at the time.
