The results of testing the Bon Voyage system for an ocean voyage are presented in this paper. The main assumptions of testing were: ETD – 26.08.2016 and ETA – 05.09.2016, as established by the owner. All the data have been obtained from an actual voyage of a post-Panamax shipping container through the North Pacific. Testing was repeated again after completion of the voyage (post-voyage analysis). The data indicate that improved results with respect to fuel consumption could have been achieved using a different moment of second stage testing. Possible problems at planning, programming, and optimizing of the route leading through the ECA (Emission Control Area) zones with the use of onboard routing systems are also presented.

Over the years, many publications have been published on planning ship’s passage through the NSR and input and output data modeling. Results were not considered in terms of errors of modeled output data. Basic research for the years 2008 - 2020 was carried out in the study on opening and closing dates of ice-free transit corridor on the NSR and probable number of tariff zones where paid assistance of icebreakers would be required. Mathematical relationships of average values and probable errors of navigational, ecological and economic ship voyage performance were developed. For this purpose, partial derivatives of functions were used. The outcomes of the study have shown that changes of total average cost of vessel’s transit voyage depends mostly on number of tariff zones where assistance of icebreakers is required. But navigation with icebreakers assistance ensures smaller standard deviation of total voyage time and thus more precise scheduling of ship's voyage timetable through the NSR. The higher probability of meeting requirements set by decision-maker when planning a long-term voyage of ship, the shorter time window for meeting these requirements. Outside the favorable time window, the navigational, ecological and economic results of voyage deteriorate very quickly.

Vessels designed for navigation in ice can perform voyage with the assistance of icebreaker in the navigation season in case an ice cover area is less than 20%. Whereas the same vessels could carry out successfully completed voyage through the NSR with intensive icebreaker help at the ice-covered area lower than 42%. Navigation of the same vessel at ice covered area above 80% is possible with intensive icebreaker help, but it threatens to damage the hull, rudder or propeller. Excessive generalization of data analyzed may cause to wrong, even opposite conclusions. Using only basic statistical information in the form of average values and standard deviation may be not sufficient for the purpose of vessel’s voyage planning in areas covered with ice. Much more opportunities for the assessment of navigation in ice covered regions provides cumulative distribution, which should be related to the time and geographical space distribution. It allows to determine the duration of time window for given area covered with ice in a particular region and predetermined probability of its occurrence. It is thus possible to plan approximate date of departure and duration of voyage for assumed safety criteria. Also, it is possible to plan a number of consecutive voyages in a navigation season. Mathematical approach to voyage planning in ice based on a cumulative distribution is presented in the paper. It allows creation of an advisory computer application to support decision-making by the commander of a vessel. It will reduce the human factor in data processing and reduce possibility of making a mistake. By this way, can be enhanced the safety of maritime transport. Novell approach is verified on the example of historical data about the German Navy ship activity during the Second World War.
W 1940 Roku na Północnej Drodze Morskiej (PDM) panowały ekstremalnie lekkie warunki lodowe w stosunku do kilku lat wcześniejszych i późniejszych. Najniższa powierzchnia pokrywy lodowej w regionach PDM w latach 1940-1945 występowała średnio w pierwszej dekadzie września. Statki przeznaczone do żeglugi w lodach mogą realizować podróże ze wsparciem lodołamaczy w sezonie nawigacyjnym w przypadku, gdy powierzchnia pokrycia poszczególnych mórz lodem jest mniejsza niż 20%. Nawigacja tego samego statku w rejonach PDM pokrytych lodem powyżej 80% jest możliwa przy intensywnej pomocy lodołamacza, ale grozi uszkodzeniem kadłuba, steru lub śruby napędowej. Do błędnych a nawet przeciwnych wniosków może prowadzić nadmierne uogólnienie analizowanych danych. Wykorzystanie jedynie podstawowych informacji statystycznych w postaci wartości średnich i odchyleń standardowych może być niewystarczające do celów planowania podróży statku na akwenach pokrytych lodem. Znacznie więcej możliwości dla oceny warunków żeglugi w regionach pokrytych lodem zapewnia rozkład skumulowany, który powinien być związany z rozkładem czasowym i rozkładem geograficznym. Rozkład skumulowany pozwala określić czas trwania okienka czasowego występowania określonych warunków żeglugi lodowej statków dla określonej powierzchni pokrycia danego regionu lodem i założonego prawdopodobieństwa o wystąpienia takich warunków. W ten sposób można zaplanować przybliżoną datę początku podróży i czas trwania podróży dla przyjętych kryteriów bezpieczeństwa. Możliwe jest również zaplanowanie szeregu kolejnych podróży w jednym sezonie nawigacyjnym. Przedstawione matematyczne podejście do planowania podróży w lodzie oparte na rozkładzie skumulowanym pozwala na stworzenie doradczej aplikacji komputerowej wspierającej proces decyzyjny osoby dowodzącej statkiem. Zmniejszy to udział czynnika ludzkiego w przetwarzaniu danych i ograniczy możliwość popełnienia błędu. W ten sposób będzie można zwiększyć bezpieczeństwo transportu morskiego.

The article analyses descriptions, memories, and notes on Dresden found in eighteenth-century accounts of Polish travellers. The overarching research objective is to capture the specificity of the way of presenting the city. The ways that Dresden is described are determined by genological diversity of texts, different ways of narration, the use of rhetorical repertoire, and the time of their creation. There are two dominant ways of presenting the city: the first one foregrounds the architectural and historical values, the second one revolves around social life and various kinds of games (redoubts, performances).

The present paper focuses on relationships and tensions between literary and scientific discourses in the following editions of Oriental travel accounts by Pierre Belon du Mans. This French traveller, naturalist and doctor travelled across Greece, Egypt, Jerusalem and Turkey between 1546 and 1549 and, afterwards, published three volumes of Les Observations de plusieurs singularitez et choses memorables, trouvées en Grece, Asie, Judée, Egypte, Arabie, et autres pays estranges. Whereas in the first edition (1553), he put emphasis to dynamics of narration and differentiation between his own adventures and those of other travellers, in the second one (1555), he introduced some major changes, which were to underline the scientific nature of his trip. Those changes show, on one hand, the pressions the author underwent when he wanted to meet the scientific requirements of his times and, on the other hand, a kind of crisis he experienced being trapped between literary and scientific discourses and their stylistics.

The paper deals with master duty of a sea going ship to prepare passage planning. Additively the key problem of information used in passage plan. The schemes of information distribution to create the strategic and tactical passage plans have been given. The validity and integrity of information used in passage planning have been discussed in the light of the statistical research.

The authors address the problem of settlement of voyage time by the charterer and its demand of compensation from the carrier company for an alleged extension of the vessels voyage. They analyzed a voyage of ship "Diana" where the charterer hired the company AWT for weather routing the ship and then settle voyage time and fuel consumption. The analyzed documentation included the settlement of voyage by AWT and the charterer to shipowner's claim for compensation for the extension of voyage time. The authors subjected the weather data from three sources (AWT, Ship's Log Book, SPOS program) to a repeated evaluation and performed similar computations demonstrating that the calculations by weather-routing centres are not always faultless and fail to use actual and reliable data.
Artykuł dotyczy problemu rozliczania czasu podróży statku przez czarterującego oraz roszczeń po podróży za niedotrzymanie przez statek warunków umowy czarterowej. Przeanalizowano rzeczywistą podróż statku "Diana", gdzie czarterujący posłużył się firmą AWT do prowadzenia i doradztwa pogodowego statku, a następnie rozliczenia podróży pod względem czasu i zużycia paliwa. Do ukazania problemu wykorzystano dokumentację dostarczoną przez armatora, zawierającą także rozliczenie podróży przez ośrodek AWT oraz roszczenie czarterującego do armatora o rekompensatę za przedłużenie podróży o 11,98 godziny. W artykule poddano ponownej analizie dane pogodowe z trzech źródeł (AWT, Dziennika okrętowego i programu SPOS). Zestawiono je na wykresach jednoznacznie wskazujących różnice w danych, na których opierano rozliczenia, a mające znaczący wpływ na otrzymane wyniki.

The present paper analyses Carnets du voyage en Égypte by a French painter and writer, Eugène Fromentin (1820-1876), using the concept of autobiogeography. The concept allows to examine how the author of a geographical description may be seen throughout this description and how s/he is influenced by the space. The paper argues that the personality of Fromentin emerges from his travel notes even though they are focused mainly on the description of the Egyptian space and the forms “I” or “we” appear there rarely. Three aspects of Fromentin’s personality may be seen through the analyses of his geographical descriptions of Egypt: the Orientalist painter enthusiastic towards the space; the traveler marked by his previous travels to Algeria who in Egyptian spaces sees Algerian ones; and the man who feels old and tired, refuses to discover the Egyptian space and who just wants to come back home.

Main problem for scheduling vessel transit voyages through the Northern Sea Route is the difficulty in predicting distribution of ice boundaries in regions that cannot be overcome by individual ice classes of vessels. Scheduling of voyage is related to speed that vessels can develop and moment of time when vessels will be able to commence and complete passage safely through areas that are main obstacle and are blocking longest transit passage through the Northern Sea Route. This applies to voyages carried out by vessels navigating on their own and with support of icebreakers. Additional problem is lack of consistency of content of maps of ice cover, which can be used for vessels voyage planning through areas where ice cover occurs. Results of this research on influence of uncertain information related with time window of conditions favorable for navigation of vessels of different ice classes on schedule of theirs voyage on example of summer navigation season 2017 are presented in this work.

The article will offer a comparative reading of Kenneth White’s poetry, essays and travelogues/waybooks, with the focus on the issue of travelling, in particular the theme of drifting, the practice of writing-travelling and travelling-seeing (voyage-voyance). I will also try to demonstrate that there is a link between White’s theory of geopoetics and the practice of voyage-voyance in his writing. I will focus mainly on selected passages from the chapters of Travels in the Drifting Dawn and poems in which White discusses the issue of his writing-travelling and the process of self-realisation.

The standard for interfacing marine electronic devices (NMEA – National Marine Electronics Association), does not provide unambiguous information regarding the reliability of data and its timing. In this paper, time delays in navigational data are investigated. For this purpose AIS and navigational data collected offshore and onshore are used. The investigations are concentrated on lags among various NMEA sentences recorded in a relational database during the survey voyage. The analysis is based on standard elements of descriptive statistics.

The article presents the origin of Emission Control Area (ECA) zones, a timetable for their enforcement, criteria of their implementation and the principles and rules of navigation in these areas. Plans and areas of the next ECA zones envisaged for the future are presented. Least fuel route programming was presented, together with a description of safety rules during the change-over procedure in operations concerning the main engine and other ship systems. An attempt to identify the problems that may be encountered when programming the routes with the use of on-board routing systems, like Bon Voyage of AWT, leading through the ECA zones, has been made. Examples of such problems, taken from a true voyage of a postpanamx container vessel on a transpacific voyage, have been presented. A generalized algorithm for programming the route leading through the ECA zone according to the least fuel criterion has been presented.

The outbreak of the Spanish Civil War represented a pivotal moment in Leonardo Sciascia’s ideological development, as it pushed him towards an anti-fascist passion that would make him an engagé writer over the years. In fact, the news of Lorca’s assassination and Ortega y Gasset’s volumes had a lasting influence on the writer: he began to read Spanish and about the Spanish world, thus discovering Spain and its language, literature, and culture. In fact, it was a rediscovery, since, in the eyes of the Sicilian author, the common Arab domination and the long Spanish hegemony in Sicily had already connected the island and the peninsula in an intricate web of “similarities.” The present article aims to examine the distinctness of Sciascia’s Sicilian-Spanish imaginary that is present in the reports that he published after his numerous trips to the Iberian land starting in the 1950s. After having often been dismissed as paraliterary, those works will be analysed as travel writing so as to better appreciate them. Ore di Spagna, the volume that collects most of those journalistic articles, will be considered as one of the best examples of reporting in the 20th century, far beyond the boundaries of essay production.
Lo scoppio della Guerra civile spagnola rappresentò un momento decisivo per la maturazione ideologica di Leonardo Sciascia, in quanto le sue vicende lo spinsero verso quella passione antifascista che nel tempo lo avrebbe reso uno scrittore engagé. Tuttavia, dal triennio rivoluzionario arrivarono anche le notizie dell’assassinio di Lorca, i volumi di Ortega y Gasset - su cui Sciascia iniziò a leggere il castellano, e poi il mondo -, dunque la scoperta della Spagna, della sua lingua, della sua letteratura e della sua cultura. In realtà, si sarebbe trattato di una riscoperta, poiché, agli occhi dell’autore, la comune dominazione araba e la lunga egemonia spagnola in Sicilia avevano già saldato l’isola alla penisola in un intricato intreccio di “somiglianze”. Il presente studio intende esaminare le peculiarità di questo immaginario siculo-spagnolo attraverso una presentazione dei reportage pubblicati da Sciascia a seguito dei numerosi viaggi intrapresi in terra iberica a partire dagli anni Cinquanta. Trattandosi di pagine spesso allontanate dal genere che meglio può valorizzarle, si procederà, infine, a una loro valutazione in chiave odeporica e si stabilirà che Ore di Spagna, il volume che raccoglie la maggior parte di quei pezzi giornalistici, può superare i confini del compendio saggistico nella direzione dei migliori esiti reportistici novecenteschi. Opis:
A ship sailing between the coasts of China, Japan, Korea and the Western coast of North America must cross navigational and geographical barriers of the Kuril Islands Archipelago and Aleutian Chain. Passes between the islands are particularly difficult and hazardous in winter. Most of them are covered by drifting ice for 5 months of the year. A number of allowed passes and offshore routes had been established by the maritime authorities of Alaska on the Bering Sea and in Aleutian Chain. However, use of other passes and routes is limited to exceptional cases only. Similar regulations exist in the Okhotsk Sea and other waters under Russian jurisdiction. The ship must then give grounds for a deviation from recommended or allowed passes and tracks and report other required information. Since January 1, 2015, it is mandatory to use the low sulphur fuel oil (sulphur content no higher than 0.01%) in the main propulsion system and auxiliary machinery when navigating inside the Emission Control Area (ECA) zone. Ships face a constant dilemma whether to remain in the ECA zone for the shortest or longer period of time, if the fuel and cost gain in relation to the entire route justify that. Available decision making support systems, like SPOS and Bon Voyage, do not solve that issue satisfactorily.

The work discusses possibility to make transit voyages of vessels without ice strengthening on the Northern Sea Route (NSR). Exist many uncertainties for it. They are related to hydrometeorological conditions, mostly to ice cover on the Russian Arctic. Ice conditions are under dynamic changes in time and space. Is hard to precisely predict ice conditions now, in the time range of one month and so on. Statistical historical data of daily changes same like yearly changes show a considerable scatter of the data. The author analyzed number of ice-free days of particular seas of the NSR in the latest eight years. The results of this work may be used for estimation of time frame (time window) for transport of cargo on the NSR by means of vessels without ice strengthening. The statistical presentation of ice-free days data was used in the work to develop decision supporting method related to planning vessel voyage including ice-free time frame on particular seas of the Northern Sea Route.
W artykule omówiono możliwości tranzytu statków bez wzmocnień lodowych kadłuba północną drogą morską (PDM). Najwięcej niepewności dotyczy warunków hydrometeorologicznych, głównie pokrywy lodowej w rosyjskiej części Arktyki, która podlega dynamicznym zmianom w czasie i przestrzeni. Trudno przewidzieć bieżące warunki lodowe, w przedziale jednego miesiąca, tym bardziej zaś z dużym wyprzedzeniem. Statystyczne dane historyczne dziennych zmian oraz zmian rocznych wykazują znaczny rozrzut wartości. Autor przeanalizował liczbę dni bezlodowych na poszczególnych morzach PDM w ostatnich ośmiu latach — od 2008 do 2015 roku. Wyniki te mogą być wykorzystane do szacowania przedziału czasu (okna czasowego) dla przewozu ładunków północną drogą morską statkami bez wzmocnień lodowych kadłuba. Statystyczne zależności dni wolnych od lodu zostały wykorzystane do opracowania metody wspierającej decyzje związane z planowaniem podróży statku z uwzględnieniem okna czasowego żeglugi bezlodowej na poszczególnych morzach PDM.

The reduction of sea ice area in the Arctic has increased the availability of the Russian Arctic seas for navigation by vessels of relatively low ice class. The signing of the Act on the Northern Sea Route (NSR) by the President of the Russian Federation has created the possibility for ships from countries other than Russia to use the NSR. However, the NSR is very poorly recognized in terms of navigation by countries other than Russia. The author of the paper analyzed the NSR navigation infrastructure components in terms of the reliability of the information provided by the main producers of nautical publications for initial voyage planning. For the purpose of this analysis an indicator of the quality of the navigation infrastructure was developed. The value of this indicator, obtained on the basis of the above analysis, is low. Navigators that collect information during the initial stage of voyage planning may be misled if they use nautical publications originating from only one global producer of charts and publications. If the navigators act in accordance with good seamanship and familiarize themselves with information from two or three global producers of nautical publications, they may be disoriented due to the receipt of divergent information. It seems that before the voyage begins and preferably before planning a trip, the master or owner of the vessel intending to carry out a voyage by the NSR should first use the most current local knowledge in the possession of the Northern Sea Route Administration. This is also where information can be found as to where to obtain the most current and reliable information for initial voyage planning.

Selon l’écrivain, directeur de la revue Tel Quel, la révolution doit passer par l’écriture et par la théorie. Néanmoins, la Chine qu’il découvre durant le séjour semble s’éloigner de la Chine rêvée avant le départ… En s’appuyant sur des articles publiés par Tel Quel, notre étude cherche à montrer comment la Chine de Mao, idéalisée par un discours idéologique, se transforme en un réel théâtralisé que le peuple chinois est obligé de mettre en scène devant les touristes qui sont autorisés à visiter la Chine.
Having adopted a pro-Maoist position during the 1970s, Philippe Sollers went to China for three weeks in 1974 to witness the great success of the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). According to the writer, director of the magazine Tel Quel, the revolution must be achieved through writing and theory. Nevertheless, the China he discovered during his stay seemed to be far from the China he had dreamt of before his departure... Based on articles published by Tel Quel, the paper seeks to show how Mao's China, idealized in ideological discourse, is transformed into a dramatized reality that the Chinese people are obliged to stage in front of the tourists allowed to visit China.

Jan Potocki – Polish traveller, geographer, ethnographer and writer, mostly known as the author of The Manuscript Found in Saragossa, embarked on a journey around Morocco in 1791. In 1792, the memoirs from the journey entitled ‘Voyage dans l’Empire de Maroc, fait en l’année 1791. Suivi du Voyage de Hafez, récit oriental’ were released, the Polish translation of which was published in the collective work of Leszek Kukulski entitled ‘Journeys’ in 1959. And in 2014, the Arabic translation of ʿAbd Allāh Bāʻalī entitled ‘ Yān Būtūtskī. Jan Potocki. Riḥla fī Imbirāṭūriyyat al-Maġrib tammat hilāla sanat 1791’ appeared under the imprint of a Moroccan publisher. The article depicts the circumstances in which the travel diaries were created and presents translations of the work into Polish and Arabic. From a comparative perspective, the translation techniques and strategies in selected semantic categories are demonstrated – such as toponyms, anthroponyms, titles, names of professions – and the article focuses on the problem of overcoming cultural barriers.
Jan Potocki – polski podróżnik, geograf, etnograf i pisarz, znany przede wszystkim jako autor Rękopisu znalezionego w Saragossie, udał się na wyprawę po Maroku w roku 1791. W roku 1792 ukazały się wspomnienia z podróży zatytułowane ‘Voyage dans l'Empire de Maroc, fait en l'année 1791. Suivi du Voyage de Hafez, récit oriental’, których polski przekład opublikowany został w zbiorowym opracowaniu Leszka Kukulskiego pt. ‘Podróże’ w roku 1959. Natomiast w roku 2014, nakładem marokańskiego wydawnictwa Kalimat, ukazało się arabskie tłumaczenie ʿAbd Allāha Bāʻalī zatytułowane ‘Yān Būtūtskī. Jan Potocki. Riḥla fī Imbirāṭūriyyat al-Maġrib tammat hilāla sanat 1791’. Artykuł przedstawia okoliczności powstania dzieła, prezentując z perspektywy porównawczej wybrane techniki i strategie.

Opis:
A significant increase in demand for navigation support systems called Onboard Routing Systems (ORS) can be observed in the World’s merchant fleet. ORS is a navigation-support system that enables route programming to warn of dangers and navigation constraints and determine the required route-safety level directly onboard the vessel. In this article, an attempt to analyze and compare two ORS systems has been made: the Ship Performance Optimization System (SPOS), by the Meteo Consult Group; and the Bon Voyage system by Applied Weather Technologies (AWT). Individual items, methods, and criteria of both systems for optimization and weather forecasting models utilized have been compared. Particular attention has been paid to the usefulness of the systems regarding the problem of identification and avoidance of hazards such as tropical cyclones and wave resonance. Ergonomics of both systems has also been compared.

The data related to ice floe concentration and ice thickness were analysed. Sources of data have been verified by visual observation and by comparison in between information from different remote sensing sources. The results of this work exceeded initial expectations. The discrepancies of the information provided by various data sources result from the error of the measurement method, which can be as high as 15% of the concentration of ice floes. It should also be borne in mind that the more generalized information about the state of the ice cover, the lower probability of detection of ice floe patches of a high concentration and spatial extent. Each vessel that is planning voyage in ice should take into consideration inaccurate estimation of concentration and thickness of ice floes received by means of satellite remote sensing methods. The method of determining permissible speed of various ice class vessel in ice on basis of safe speed graph for the icebreaker was developed. A well-defined equation approximates relationship between speed of the icebreaker and the vessels of specified ice classes. Average distance of 24.1 Nm from sea ice extent line was related to all analysed lines representing 30-40% ice floe concentration (IUP product excluded) and 30.6 Nm for analysed lines representing 70-81-91% ice floe concentration. The maximal average distance of the furthest analysed line (IUP product excluded) was equal 37.2 Nm. The average standard deviation of that results was equal 8.3 Nm only. Average distances of analysed lines from sea ice extent line to maximal ice data values were found as follow: 8.4 Nm (23%) for NSIDC-CCAR ice age, 12.3 Nm (33%) for minimal distance of 30-40% ice concentration, 15.4 Nm (41%) for OSISAF ice type “ambiguous” zone from Open Water side, 25 Nm (67%) for minimal distance of 70-81-91% ice concentration, 26.6 Nm (72%) for OSISAF ice type “ambiguous” zone from 1st year ice age side, 35.9 Nm (97%) for maximal distance of 30-40% ice concentration and 36.3 Nm (98%) for maximal distance of 70-81-91% ice concentration data. In the parentheses placed relative distances from first ice data including IUP 40% concentration isolines. Sea ice extent of most of available data sources delineated the edge of “area to be avoided” for vessels of ice class lower than L1. Estimated average speed of L3 ice class vessel was from 3.3 knots till 5.2 knots at average speed 5.0 knots. For L1 ice class vessel estimated average speed was from 6.5 knots till 12.1 knots at average speed 9.7 knots. Relative standard deviation of averaged speed for both ice class vessels was equal 18%. The highest relative deviations were found up to 50% below the average speed value. The highest relative deviations upward were equal 22%. Above speeds for L3 and L1 ice class vessels corresponded well with average technical speed of “Norilsk SA-15” ULA class vessel equal 12,6 knots. The results of the work were not intended to be used for decision making on spot - “on-scene” - during direct guiding vessel in ice. They should be useful for initial voyage planning to allow decision-makers to identify the best freely available data sources for considered voyage and vessel of defined ice class; to understand advantages and limitations of available in the internet data sources; to estimate vessel’s maximal safe speed in encountered ice conditions, to estimate spatial distribution and correlations in between various levels of sea ice concentration and thickness. All above data allow estimate voyage time that is, in addition to fuel consumption, basic criterion of maritime transport economics.

Within this paper results of ongoing investigations will be presented. Main subject of studies is laid on the present situation of alert management onboard ships navigational bridges and potential use of data recorded with mandatory ship-borne VDR equipment during normal ship operation to support the process of on board collision avoidance. The investigations and results discussed and presented in the paper are gained within trhe work in two different projects on research and technical development. The first is the European MARNIS – project on Maritime Navigation and Information Services. It is funded by the European Commission, Department for Energy and Transport. Secondly some of the results presented here are part of investigations performed under the national RD project "Maritime Safety Assistance Rostock" which is funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research Berlin.

The operational limitations are discussed at the IMO as a part of the second generation intact stability criteria. Since it is a first attempt to introduce operational efforts into safety regulations, comprehensive discussions are necessary to realize practically acceptable ones. Therefore this study investigates actual navigation routes of container ships and pure car carriers in the trans-North Pacific Ocean in winter, because they are prone to suffer significant parametric roll which is one of stability failure modes. Firstly, interviews are made to shipmasters who have experiences to have operated the subject ships to identify major elements for route selection in the North Pacific Ocean. Secondly, sufficient number of actual navigation records is collected from Satellite AIS data to derive the weather criteria for the route selection in severe weather condition. Finally, shipmaster’s on-board decision-making criteria are discussed by analysing the ship tracking data and weather data.

Opis:
In this paper an example of speed down curve construction for one ship type is presented. The relationship between ship's speed changes and environmental factors is defined on the basis of observational data. The artificial neural network was used for a regression analysis. Taking into account the fact that input data imprecision can hardly be avoided, which consequently makes the predicted ship speed approximate, the proposed notation of ship speed in given conditions has the form of fuzzy number.
W artykule zaprezentowano przykład konstrukcji charakterystyki prędkościowej dla wybranego typu statku. Zależność zmian prędkości statku w funkcji wpływu czynników środowiska zewnętrznego określono na podstawie danych obserwacyjnych, a do celów analizy regresji zastosowano sztuczną sieć neuronową. Biorąc pod uwagę fakt trudnych do uniknięcia w praktyce niedokładności danych wejściowych, co w konsekwencji upoważnia do opisu przewidywanej prędkości statku w postaci 'około', zaproponowano do tego celu zapis w postaci liczby rozmytej.
