Opis:
In the article one presented the most important information concerning of the modern Polish orthophony standard within the range the realization of nasal vowels and the modern Polish orthophony standard within the range the realization of oral vowels and their connections. One paid attention on controversies related to the phonological interpretation of speech sounds meant graphically with letters ę, ą. One evidenced the polysegmental construction of nasal vowels, on the presence in them at least two segments – oral and nasal. One presented manners of the pronunciation of nasal vowels in compliance with with the fixed rate. For example, in the final sound for ę in the careful pronunciation appear optional [e] forms or [ę] (with the light nasalness), e.g. v́iʒe; however ą should be pronounced in the careful language as the nasal vowel with the full nasal resonance , e.g. idǫ, sǫ. The authoress underlines that in Polish the difference in the duration of vowels is or with the secondary feature of these speech sounds, or the full moon the function expressive-impressive, not distributive. It notices also that the supply of vowels in the Polish vocalic system is poor enough, for example decidedly richer is the English vocalic system.

The article aims at the explanation of some distributional peculiarities of two high unrounded vowels [i] and [È] in Russian. More generally, it looks at some phonotactic constraints of Russian vowels which are directly related to a broader topic of palatalization and vowel reduction in this language. Although the discussion in this paper concerns only a tiny section of Russian phonology, which is the distribution of high unrounded vowels, it is necessary to introduce several facts from Russian phonology, such as palatalization, velarization, stress and vowel reduction. They, at first sight, may look pretty much irrelevant to the main topic of the paper but, as it will become evident, are closely related and actually indispensable to the understanding of vowel distribution including the two high unrounded vowels in Russian.

Opis:
This article is dedicated to the vocalism of the contemporary Żarnowiec dialect (spoken in Wierzchucino and Nadole). On the one hand, an acoustic and phonetic analysis has identified certain phonetic archaisms (like the central or frontal and central pronunciation of /u/) and has aided in-depth descriptions of sounds previously referred to in a very imprecise way (*/aː/ pronounced as a near-close rounded vowel, central, [ɵ] type). On the other hand, the analysis has provided grounds for acknowledging the important phonetic changes which have occurred in the Kashubian dialect in the past few decades; some of these consist in completing specific phenomena. These include the general dissemination of the diphthongal pronunciation of stressed /e, o, ɛ, ɔ/, the highly back and rounded pronunciation of /ɒ/, the front and open pronunciation of /æ/ in Nadole and the extended scope of the phonological and phonetic reduction of non-stressed vowels (the phonemes /ɘ̟, ɛ, æ/ are always, /ɵ, e/ nearly always and /i/ is relatively rarely pronounced in the same way when not stressed). The result of this reduction is a distinctly centralized vowel or a central vowel of the [ɜ] type. From the phonological point of view, attention should be paid primarily to the ultimate loss of nasal vowel phonemes. Contrary to existing descriptions, the vocal continuant */ã/ has not been merged phonologically with /e/ but a new oral phoneme /ɘ̟/ has been established. It is worth emphasizing that a majority of the identified changes do not bring the dialect closer to the Polish language, rather, they take it further away from it.

The present paper focuses on the role of strategies in learning the pronunciation of the target language. First, an outline of various general classifications of language learning strategies is provided. Next, pronunciation learning strategies are defined and their various taxonomies are presented. This is followed by the description of the study which investigated the influence of pronunciation learning strategies on the perception and production of English pure vowels and diphthongs by first-year students of an English department. The results of the study indicate that students of English, who on average use pronunciation learning strategies rather occasionally, should receive some strategy-based instruction as there exists a significant relationship between the investigated phenomena, especially between the use of pronunciation learning strategies and the production of English monophthongs and diphthongs.

Opis:
This paper examines the vowel system of present day Malacca Portuguese Creole (MPC) or Kristang, based on recordings from interviews with five female native speakers of MPC. A total of 1083 monophthongs were extracted from the recordings. The first and second formants of these vowels were measured and analysed. Considerable variation was found within and between the speakers in the way each of the vowels was produced. There were also noticeable overlaps between /i/ and /e/ suggesting that they were being used interchangeably. The quality of some of the vowels found in this study was also found to be different from those previously described. Based on the reduced vowel inventory, the variation in the way that vowels are produced, and the overlaps between vowels, the findings suggest the possibility of phonological instability of this endangered language.

This paper aims to introduce Ịzọn to the world audience. We note the status of Ịzọn as a “main” language, the geographical location of the Ịzọn people in the Niger Delta of Nigeria, the occupations of the Ịzọn, the consonants, vowels, vowel harmony and nasalized vowels in Ịzọn. We observe that in Ịzọn a vowel becomes nasalized when it occurs in the environment of a nasal; that a high tone marked ( ́), and a low tone marked (`) perform both lexical and grammatical functions in Ịzọn; that Ịzọn has S-O-V word order; that each word category is written separately; that the negative gha is marked on the verb; and that borrowed words, names of places and languages are nativised. We throw some light on the Ịzọn numerical system, namely: the traditional cardinal numbers such as óyí(10), sí (20), andẹ́/ọndẹ́(400) and andẹ́rịmandẹ́/ọndẹ́rịmọndẹ́ (160,000); the modern standardized numbers such as 100 ọdọ́zọ́, 1000 ọgị́zị́, 1,000,000 ịpámụ́ and 1,000,000,000,000 ẹndẹ́rị́ and the ordinal numbers, bụlọụ 1st and mamụ karamọ2nd. Next we look at the kinship, persons, religious, colour, body parts, cooking, occupational and other terminology in the lexicon of Ịzọn. Finally we observe some salient aspects of Ịzọn culture such as their dressing, religion, food, festivals, dances, traditions, and customs.

An empirical corpus-based study of the likelihood of realizing the Polish nasal vowel /ɔ̃/ word-finally as [ɔm] (i.e. of 'nasal stopping') is presented. The goal was to verify whether the phenomenon exhibits a cumulative context effect, with words typically occurring in an environment favoring a particular phonetic variant showing higher rates of that variant regardless of environment. The results show that nasal stopping is more likely before stop-initial words than before words beginning in other sounds, if there is no intervening pause. Results with regard to the hypothesis that words typically followed by stops will show higher likelihood of nasal stopping, however, remain inconclusive.

The pronunciation of Early New English, a period of the language when William Shakespeare lived and worked, still hides many puzzles. Although linguists have worked out a model of pronunciation of at c1600, there still remain controversies concerning the speech of Shakespeare and his contemporaries, such as u-centralization (cup), contrast of [æ:] : [a:] (last, dance) with sociolinguistic factors involved, etc. The conflicting views on Shakespeare’s pronunciation emerge when it comes to the interpretation of vowels in the rhymes of his poetic texts. The present brief study which is confined to the rhymes in his poem Venus and Adonis aims at offering a relatively uniform interpretation of the value of vowels in such rhymes. The main goal is determining whether they are pure rhymes, eye rhymes, or quasi rhymes, the last ones based neither on phonological nor spelling similarities. The solutions suggested are of course not final so that modifications and amendments are welcome.

The numerals in question are used to number the pages of a medieval Latin manuscript. These are cardinal numerals, transcribed as follows: edno, četiry, pęt, šest, sedem, osem, devęt, desęt. In addition, two ordinal numerals, drugi and tretiji, also appear there. The words analysed here are undoubtedly Slavic numerals, but it is not possible to assign them with certainty to a specific Slavic language. The most probable theory of their origin links them to the Slovenian dialectal area in Carinthia (mostly due to attested continuation of Proto‑Slavic *ę, the eno < edno numeral and the phonetic spelling of the ordinal numeral as tretji), although a Polish linguistic substrate cannot be definitely ruled out due to attested nasal vowels.

The electromagnetic articulography (EMA) is a relatively exact and efficient method used in study on speech production physiology. It allows to precisely estimate movement trajectories of speech articulators like tongue, lips, jaw etc. by tracking position of sensors fixed to the articulators. This paper presents results of EMA research on Polish oral and nasalised vowels in orthography represented by the graphemes <ę>, <ą>. Inter-individual variability of tongue and lips position in X-axis direction during realization of the same phoneme has been estimated. Differences between oral and nasalised vowels in terms of movement of articulators in X-axis direction have been assessed too.
