This paper constitutes the approach to correlate the results of gas purification properties performed with aid of photocatalysis with the cytotoxicity test results. The gas purification by means of photocatalysis is a subject well known a profusely described in literature. Easiness and continence of application causes the photocatalysis to be used in variety of industries, however this paper considers only automotive industry application. The effectiveness of photocatalysis have been proven experimentally by vast number of researchers. However, the literature contains only the information about the level of volatile organic compounds identification and reduction. The toxicity measure in terms of living cells was not yet fully tested and described in literature. Therefore, the standard chromatography test which enables quantitative identification of volatile organic compounds was confronted with a cytotoxicity tests revealing the virtual toxicity of gases before and after photocatalysis.

This paper presents selected issues of the design of precise control devices for the characteristics of the process environment in the VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) chambers, in which non-standard validation tests are performed. The main parameters defining the environmental conditions are temperature and humidity. Particular attention was paid to the elimination of pollution generating sources in the background of the chamber. The module designed to control the temperature and humidity is presented. The results of the recording of temperature and humidity in several-month-long test cycles are presented. The developed modules have been used in chambers for testing the emissions of volatile organic compounds and formaldehyde.
W artykule przedstawiono wybrane zagadnienia projektowania urządzeń do precyzyjnego sterowania charakterystykami środowiska procesowego w komorach VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds), w których prowadzone są niestandardowe badania atestacyjne. Głównymi parametrami określającymi warunki środowiska jest temperatura i wilgotność. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na eliminację źródeł generowania zanieczyszczeń w tle komory. Zaprezentowano opracowany moduł do regulacji temperatury i wilgotności. Przedstawiono wyniki rejestracji temperatury i wilgotności w kilkumiesięcznych cyklach badawczych. Opracowane moduły zostały zastosowane w komorach do badania emisji lotnych związków organicznych oraz formaldehydu.

Constantly increasing amount of cars causes significant deterioration of air quality. Emission of harmful substances such as aromatic hydrocarbons or soot has negative influence for human health, especially for the respiratory system. Pollutants from engine vehicles are emitted at the people living height and, especially in cities, could cumulated because of weak ventilation among the street canyons made by buildings and infrastructure. Dynamic development of motorization and people lifestyle make the time spent inside the car is getting longer. Fumes and other air pollutants can get into the car cabin, what is extremely dangerous for driver and passengers. The pollutants inside the vehicle can also accumulate and if cabin is not well ventilated, the concentrations of them could be really high. It cause changing the microclimate inside the car cabin and has negative influence on the people staying inside the car, such as lowering of comfort and focus of driver and health effects. Previous studies have shown that the highest concentration of most of the pollutants in the vehicle cabin is located at the height of the driver's head. Of course, it depends on many factors like type (category) of vehicle or geometry of nozzles in the ventilation system. The study aim was to define concentration of volatile organic compounds in an E segment vehicle cabin by using computational fluid dynamic simulation.

This paper concerns the atmospheric-pressure microwave plasmas and their applications, mainly for gas processing. Several types of atmospheric-pressure microwave sources (MPSs), i.e. surface-wave-sustained MPS, nozzle-type MPSs, nozzleless MPSs, plasma-sheet MPSs and microwave microplasma sources - MmPSs (antenna- and coaxial-line- -based) as well as their performance are presented. The presented experimental results on the optimization of selected MPSs are confronted with results of the modelling of the electromagnetic field in them. The paper deals also with the applications of MPSs for the processing of gases. Two types of the plasma gas processing were experimentally tested: decomposition of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and reforming of VOCs (mainly methane) into hydrogen. Results of the laboratory experiments on the plasma processing of several highly-concentrated (up to 100%) VOCs, including freon-type refrigerants, in the waveguide-supplied MPSs showed that the microwave discharge plasma is capable of fully decomposing the VOCs at relatively low energy cost. The use of waveguide-supplied coaxial-line-based and metal-cylinder-based nozzleless MPSs to methane reforming into hydrogen turned out to be energetically efficient. These selected results show MPSs to be an attractive tool for gas processing, including the harmful gas decomposition and production of useful gases.

The use of zeolites as sorbents has been investigated as a replacement for existing costly methods of removing organic contaminants from water solutions. Zeolites can be modified by inorganic salts, organic surfactants, metals or metal oxides in order to increase their adsorption capacity. The unique ion exchange and adsorption properties of zeolites make them very suitable for application in the removal of organic compounds such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), phenols and other complex petrochemicals. Many different studies have demonstrated their effectiveness in reducing the concentrations of organic contaminants as well as petroleum derivatives in water, which has been summarized in this paper.

Toxic myocardial injury can be misdiagnosed as a myocardial infarction, resulting in the patient undergoing standard treatment for cardiac rehabilitation. However, such inadequate therapeutic strategies can lead to cardiovascular complications including dilated cardiomyopathy. This study presents a case of a 65-year-old man after accidental ingestion of organic solvents (toluene and xylene), whose condition demonstrated all the criteria for diagnosis of myocardial infarction. The qualitative determinations of the above mentioned volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in whole blood were carried out using a headspace sampling by means of gas chromatography. Cardiac catheterization revealed no specific coronary lesions, only a muscular bridge causing a 30–50% stenosis in the middle of the circumflex branch of the left coronary artery.

Current standard odor measurement methods are lab-based and require substantial investment in hardware, sample collection, training, and maintenance. Odor samples must be collected in the field using bags and brought to the lab to test. This can be a time-consuming process, with the possibility of the sample loss. The actual odor measurements are based on dilution olfactometry, embodied in the AC’SCENT® International Olfactometer, following the ASTM E679-04 standard. In recent years a portable olfactometer, the Scentroid SM100i, has been developed for odor measurements. The portable olfactometer has many advantages over lab-based standard method, especially the lower cost-per-sample. However, very little is known about the performance and reliability of portable olfactometer where the dilutions are controlled with orifices in metallic plates. It is important to evaluate the Scentroid SM100i accuracy to determine the usefulness of using it as a comparable technology for odor measurements. The main objective of this research is to compare the performance of the lab-based ASTM E679-04 method with portable odor measurement technology. Specific objectives include: (1) determining the accuracy of the dilution ratios specified by the manufacturer of both the AC’SCENT International Olfactometer and the Scentroid SM100i; (2) comparing results between olfactometers using n-butanol, a commonly used standard gas in the olfactometry field, and (3) determining the accuracy of odor measurement using real odor samples collected from livestock farms in Iowa. The AC’SCENT olfactometer had an average percent error between the factory specifications and measured dilution ratios of 5.23% compared with 14.1% for Scentroid SM100i (using plate i-2 with dilution range most comparable to the AC’SCENT olfactometer). The use of other dilution plates resulted in average percent errors ranging from 9.68% to 25.31%. The Scentroid SM100i deviated from the manufacturer specifications for flowrates and dilution ratios, but these flowrates were generally consistent with each dilution setting. Overall, the Scentroid SM100i overestimated the odor concentrations with the mean difference of 22.9% (ranging from 0.95% to 93.34%). When the post-measurement adjustment using dilution correction was made, the mean percent average difference was 11.8%.

W polskim ustawodawstwie istnieje bardzo dotkliwa dla obywateli i przedsiębiorców luka dotycząca regulacji prawnych związanych z uciążliwością zapachową. Po przeprowadzeniu analizy publikowanych projektów aktów prawnych i literatury z tego zakresu stwierdzono, że „ustawa odorowa” w kształcie proponowanym przez administrację państwową nie może wejść w życie. Jako przykład gałęzi przemysłu będącej przyczyną powstawania uciążliwości zapachowej wybrano procesy produkcyjne, wykorzystujące surowce fosforanowe ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem produkcji superfosfatu prostego. W celu scharakteryzowania problemu dokonano analizy doniesień literaturowych dotyczących diagenezy i składu fosforytów pod kątem obecnej w nich fazy organicznej, z której w czasie produkcji nawozu powstają odoranty. W celu określenia obecności konkretnych związków odorotwórczych pobrano próbki gazów wylotowych z instalacji produkującej superfosfat prosty. Próbki te zanalizowano metodą TD-GC/MS pod kątem identyfikacji lotnych związków organicznych. Zidentyfikowano ponad 80 różnych związków, a wśród nich: dużo alkanów, cykloalkanów, aromatów i organicznych związków siarki. Najprawdopodobniej za złowonność gazów wylotowych w największym stopniu odpowiedzialne są właśnie związki siarki. Ze względu na znikome informacje dotyczące właściwości złowonnych mieszanin różnych związków nie można wykluczyć wpływu innych składników na zapach analizowanych gazów wylotowych. Ostatecznie ze względu na brak danych w dostępnej literaturze zaproponowano przeprowadzenie kompleksowych badań dotyczących związków organicznych w produkcji superfosfatu prostego. Z prognoz dotyczących wykorzystywania surowców fosforowych wynika, że w ciągu następnych kilku dekad czeka nas wzrost produkcji mineralnych nawozów fosforowych. Dlatego należy jak najszybciej uporać się z problematyką uciążliwości zapachowej.
There is no kind of odor control law in Polish legislation. The gas samples were taken in FOSFAN SA company during superphosphate production and analyzed using TD-GC/MS method. There were identified over 80 volatile organic compounds like alkanes, cycloalkanes and aromatic compounds. Probably the most significant influence for odor perception is connected with presence of sulfur volatile organic compounds. In addition to lack of professional data connected with smell of gas mixture consisted with different particles there is no possibility to exclude the influence of other particles for human smell perception. Finally the new method of further research was proposed. This research includes not only analysis of organic matter in waste gases but also in phosphate ores and superphosphate fertilize. To receive comparable results the whole research should be provided during the same day of production. This sort of research could give an solution for deodorization and preventing the decrease of air quality. It could be also helpful to develop new law projects. It is predicted that in the future the production of superphosphate fertilize will increase. Thereby the greater amount of odors will be released into the atmosphere. That is why further research combined with creating well functioning odor control law is so important to be established.

W polskim ustawodawstwie istnieje bardzo dotkliwa dla obywateli i przedsiębiorców luka dotycząca regulacji prawnych związanych z uciążliwością zapachową. Po przeprowadzeniu analizy publikowanych projektów aktów prawnych i literatury z tego zakresu stwierdzono, że „ustawa odorowa” w proponowanym przez administrację państwową kształcie nie może wejść w życie. Jako przykład gałęzi przemysłu będącej przyczyną powstawania uciążliwości zapachowej wybrano procesy produkcyjne wykorzystujące surowce fosforanowe ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem produkcji superfosfatu prostego. W celu scharakteryzowania problemu dokonano analizy doniesień literaturowych dotyczących diagnozy i składu fosforytów pod kątem obecnej w nich fazy organicznej, z której w czasie produkcji nawozu powstają odoranty. In large cities the number of inhabitants constantly increases. It is caused by economic issues. The evergrowing populations causes more intense traffic and in consequence increase of air pollutions. Topology and roads configuration is conducive to the accumulation of toxic substances. Harmful substances accumulates inside the vehicles interiors which significantly deteriorate microclimate within the cabin. The study aimed to determine the amount of harmful substances getting into the interior of vehicles and their distribution have been presented in this paper.

Chemical compounds released into the air by the activities of industrial plants and emitted from many other sources, including in households (paints, waxes, cosmetics, disinfectants, plastic (PVC) flooring), may affect the environment and human health. Thus, air purification is an important issue in the context of caring for the condition of the environment. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as liquids with environmentally friendly properties (non-volatile, biodegradable, non-toxic, cheap, easy to prepare) are a promising solution to this problem. This paper reviews the advances made in the application of DESs as sorbents for the purification of atmospheric and indoor air. The potential of DESs and their subclasses (including SUPRAmolecular Deep Eutectic Solvents, SUPRADESs) applications in air purification processes were also summarized.The authors believe that this review can be useful for future readers as a starting point for research in the field of DESs and their application in air purification.

Nowadays, with the current dynamic development of the automotive industry, we spend more and more time indoors, including in vehicles. The air used for ventilation of the vehicle's cabin comes from the outside. Pollution enters into the vehicle. This research presents the results of tests conducted to assess the exposure of the driver and passengers to volatile organic compounds entering the vehicle with atmospheric air. The simulation researches were conducted on a chassis dynamometer at the Department of Vehicle Engineering at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering Technical University of Wroclaw and the tests under real conditions, i.e. traffic urban conditions, were taken as well. The measurements were conducted in the centre of Wroclaw during peak hours, when the traffic jam is the most frequent. The measurements were taken in order to organic compounds analysis, which includes gas chromatography. The analysis results were averaged from three measurements to get these studies more reliable. Results show that during mobile tests the vehicle was exposed to much more pollution than in the stationary tests in the simulated conditions of traffic congestion. Therefore, the studies present that the pollution in the traffic congestion is the real danger to drivers.

Objectives During laparoscopic cholecystectomy, the removal of the gall bladder, pyrolysis occurs in the peritoneal cavity. Chemical substances which are formed during this process escape into the operating room through trocars in the form of surgical smoke. The aim of this study was to identify and quantitatively measure a number of selected chemical substances found in surgical smoke and to assess the risk they carry to medical personnel. Material and Methods The study was performed at the Maria Skłodowska-Curie Memorial Provincial Specialist Hospital in Zgierz between 2011 and 2013. Air samples were collected in the operating room during laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Results A complete qualitative and quantitative analysis of the air samples showed a number of chemical substances present, such as aldehydes, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, ozone, dioxins and others. Conclusions The concentrations of these substances were much lower than the hygienic standards allowed by the European Union Maximum Acceptable Concentration (MAC). The calculated risk of developing cancer as a result of exposure to surgical smoke during laparoscopic cholecystectomy is negligible. Yet it should be kept in mind that repeated exposure to a cocktail of these substances increases the possibility of developing adverse effects. Many of these compounds are toxic, and may possibly be carcinogenic, mutagenic or genotoxic. Therefore, it is necessary to remove surgical smoke from the operating room in order to protect medical personnel.

Sea fennel (Crithmum maritimum L.) is an edible halophytic species rich in various valuable phytochemicals, and has accordingly, been used in traditional medicine and nutrition since ancient times. The aim of this study was to investigate the chemical composition of sea fennel flowers from three regionally (ecologically) different locations on the Croatian Adriatic coast (Pag, Korčula, Cavtat). The profiles of essential oils (EOs), fatty acids (FAs), tocopherols, and phenolic compounds (total phenolics, flavonoids, and tannins) as well as associated antioxidant capacity were analysed. The flowers collected at the northernmost site had the lowest contents of total phenolic compounds, limonene in the EO and unsaturated FAs, but the highest content of α-tocopherol, one of the best-known plant lipophilic antioxidants. On the other hand, the flowers from Korčula and Cavtat contained high amounts of phenolics, especially chlorogenic acid (7.99 and 13.27 mg/g dry plant matter, respectively), resulting in high antioxidant activity of the samples. Despite these differences in composition, which may be related to the geographical location of the sampling site, sea fennel flowers from all locations can be considered a valuable source of important health-promoting phytochemicals.

Opis:
Zaproponowano zintegrowany proces oczyszczania powietrza z lotnych związków organicznych. Do usuwania danego zanieczyszczenia z powietrza zastosowano procesy sorpcyjne, a do jego degradacji przemianę mikrobiologiczną. Wykazano skuteczność regeneracji sorbentu zarówno stałego jak i ciekłego oraz wymagany stopień degradacji zanieczyszczeń. Powolny przebieg biodegradacji wymaga jednak aparatury wielkogabarytowej.
An integrated process of purifying air from volatile organic compounds was proposed. Sorption processes were applied to remove pollutants from air whereas the microbiological transformation to degrade them. The effectiveness of sorbent regeneration, both solid and liquid, was demonstrated and the required degree of pollutant degradation was achieved. Nevertheless, slow biodegradation processes require large scale apparatus.
