Opis:
Introduction: Stage fright is a symptom of excessive emotional arousal, and it is commonly referred to as social anxiety. This type of anxiety results mainly from a sense of being judged by others in a given social situation. Materials and Methods: We enrolled 27 female students, aged 22-30 years. We used two methods to examine the influence of stage fright on the activities and sensations within the vocal tract; namely, palpation assessment and the Vocal Tract Discomfort and Voice Quality questionnaire, which were performed twice, i.e., shortly after a presentation in front of an audience and after a normal conversation. The purpose of the study was to assess the impact of stage fright on actions and sensations within the vocal tract. Results: Participants had significantly higher scores with regard to palpation assessment, discomfort, and voice quality after presentations in front of an audience than after normal conversations, indicating a negative impact of stage fright on the studied parameters. Discussion: Stage fright significantly affects activities within the vocal tract structures such as the submandibular region, lateral pharyngeal walls, sternocleidomastoid muscles, and cricothyroid and thyrohyoid spaces; also, it affects jaw mobility and breathing patters. In addition, stage fright induces negative sensations within the vocal tract such as burning, tension, dryness, jaw clenching, throat tightness, grunting, shallow breathing, voice tremor, hoarseness, and faltering voice. The feeling of discomfort during situations that elicit stage fright correlates with self-assessed voice quality.

Opis:
Choral singers are among intensive voice users whose excessive vocal effort puts them at risk of developing voice disorders. The aim of the work was to assess voice quality for choral singers in the choir at the Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology. This evaluation was carried out using the acoustic parameters from the COVAREP (A Collaborative Voice Analysis Repository For Speech Technologies) repository. A prototype of a mobile application was also prepared to allow the calculation of these parameters. The study group comprised 6 male and 19 female choir singers. The control group consisted of health non-singing individuals, 50 men and 39 women. Auditory perceptual assessment (using the RBH scale) as well as acoustic analysis were used to test the voice quality of all the participants. The voice quality of the female choir singers proved to be normal in comparison with the control group. The male choir singers were found to have tense voice in comparison with the controls. The parameters which proved most effective for voice evaluation were Peak Slope and Normalized Amplitude Quotient.

Introduction: Treatment of glottis cancer, despite oncological safety, should consider postoperative voice quality. CO2 laser endoscopic cordectomy allows radical removal of the tumor while maintaining respiratory, defensive and phonatory functions. The aim: The aim of the study is perceptual and acoustic evaluation of voice in patients after endoscopic CO2 III–Va laser cordectomy due to glottis cancer. Material and method: The study included 30 men after CO2 cordectomy. 13 (43%) patients underwent type III cordectomy, 6 (20%) – type IV; 11 (37%) – type Va. Voice quality has been assessed 6 months after the surgery. Control group included 30 healthy men of the same age. GRBAS scale has been used in perceptual evaluation of voice. Acoustic analysis has been performed using DiagnoScope Specjalista software. Narrowband spectrography and Maximum Phonation Time (MPT) measure has been performed. Results: In study group, voice has been classified as G1R1B0A0S0 after type III cordectomy; as G1R1B1A1S2 in type IV and as G2R1B1A0S3 in type Va. Acoustic evaluation revealed the highest values of F0, Jitter, Shimmer and NHR after Va cordectomy as well as non-harmonic components in narrowband spectrography and reduction of MPT. Conclusions: Postoperative voice quality depends on the type of cordectomy. Perceptual assessment indicates that type IV and Va cordectomy cause intensification of voice disorders. Parameters of acoustic evaluation increase with the extent of the procedure. The presence of non-harmonic components in narrowband spectrography increases with the extent of cordectomy, such as the reduction of MPT. Preservation of anterior commissure influences good voice quality in perceptual and acoustic assessment.

Opis:
The paper investigates the interdependence between the perceptual identification of the vocalic quality of six isolated Polish vowels traditionally defined by the spectral envelope and the fundamental frequency F0. The stimuli used in the listening experiments were natural female and male voices, which were modified by changing the F0 values in the ±1 octave range. The results were then compared with the outcome of the experiments on fully synthetic voices. Despite the differences in the generation of the investigated stimuli and their technical quality, consistent results were obtained. They confirmed the findings that in the perceptual identification of vowels of key importance is not only the position of the formants on the F1 × F2 plane but also their relationship to F0, the connection between the formants and the harmonics and other factors. The paper presents, in quantitative terms, all possible kinds of perceptual shifts of Polish vowels from one phonetic category to another in the function of voice pitch. An additional perceptual experiment was also conducted to check a broader range of F0 changes and their impact on the identification of vowels in CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) structures. A mismatch between the formants and the glottal tone value can lead to a change in phonetic category.

Introduction: Voice dysfunction is the most common complication of thyroid surgery. The use of intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) is to protect the recurrent laryngeal nerves, the damage of which causes voice dysfunction. Aim: The aim of the study was to evaluate voice quality in patients who underwent complete thyroidectomy operated on with the application of IONM as well as a group of patients operated on with only macroscopic nerve visualization. In the analysis, clinical voice assessment was performed with particular focus on voice efficiency using the Voice Handicap Index (VHI), Vocal Tract Discomfort (VTD) and GRBAS scale. Material and methods: The study group consisted of 205 patients operated on with IONM. The control group consisted of 162 patients subjected to surgery only with macroscopic visualization of recurrent laryngeal nerves, without IONM. During the follow-up period from 2 to 10 years after surgery, checkups were performed. Each patient who came for a checkup was subjected to perceptual voice evaluation with the use of the GRBAS scale, indirect laryngoscopy procedure and voice selfevaluation with two questionnaires (VHI and VTD). Results: The frequency of vocal fold palsy did not differ significantly statistically in the study group and the control group. Both in the study group and in the control group, patients with vocal fold paralysis had statistically significantly higher results in the VHI and VTD questionnaires as well as in the GRBAS study. Conclusion: Patients with recurrent laryngeal nerve injury show significant differences in the scope of voice handicap, both in the voice quality assessment with the use of the GRBAS scale, and self-evaluation questionnaires: VHI and VTD. All voice disorders evaluated with self-assessment are medium voice disability

Medialization thyroplasty (type I) is surgical procedure performed on the thyroid cartilage. The major indication for this surgery is significant glottis insufficiency due to unilateral vocal fold paresis. However the proce¬dure is also performed after vocal fold resections during cordectomy. The aim: The evaluation of voice results in patients after medialisation throplasty. Material and methods: In Otolaryngology Department of Medical University of Warsaw there were performed so far 8 thyroplasty procedures under local anaesthesia with implantation of medical silicon protesis. 6 patients had unilat¬eral vocal fold paresis and the rest two underwent in the past laser cordectomy due to T1a vocal carcinoma. Results: There were no complications during and post the surgery. The follow up examination in 1st , 3rd, 6th i 12th months postoperatively revealed for all patients significant improvement of glottal closure in laryngeal videostrobos¬copy. The voice quality improved both in perceptual evaluation (GRBAS scale) and acoustic analysis (F0, jitter, shim¬mer, NHR) in both patients groups. However the rate of improvement was much more significant in group with uni¬lateral vocal fold paresis. In all patients the maximum phonation time (MPT) increased. The self-evaluation of voice quality with Voice Handicap Index questionnaire confirmed also individual improvement. Conclusions: The speech rehabilitations is not successful in each patient with glottis insufficiency. The medialisation thyroplasty remains the standard procedure for permanent improvement of voice quality in those cases.

This paper describes simulations of speech sequences transmission for intrusive measurement of voice transmission quality of service (VTQoS) in the environment of IP networks. The aim of the simulations was to investigate the impact of the different durations of speech sequences on speech quality from the jitter rate and packet loss point of view in IP networks. The ITU-T G.729 and ITU-T G.723.1 encoding schemes were used for the purpose of the simulations. The assessment of speech quality was realized by means of perceptual evaluation of speech quality (PESQ) algorithm. A comparison of the impact of different durations of speech sequences on speech quality and determination of the optimal duration of speech sequence for measurements of speech quality in telecommunication networks, is the aim of this paper.

Psychogenic dysphonia is defined as disturbances in voice and speech quality with emotional background with lack of organic changes in the larynx. Mental condition has significant impact on the process of producing voice, functioning of respiratoryphonatory- articulation mechanism and speech prosody. The aim of the study was visual, acoustic, perceptual assessment as well as self-assessment of voice and speech quality using subjective and objective methods in patients with psychogenic dysphonia. The study included 50 patients with psychogenic dysphonia diagnosed in the Department of Clinical Fonoaudiology and Logopedics, Medical University of Białystok and treated at the Foniatric Outpatient Clinic, University Hospital in Białystok in 2017–2018. The control group consisted of 30 subjects with euphonic voice. All patients underwent subjective and objective assessment of voice and speech quality. The GRBAS scale, breathing pathway assessment, respiratory-phonatory-articulation analysis, voice and speech intensity evaluation have been performed. Speech prosody has also been examined. Patient selfassessment of voice has been conducted using Voice Handicap Index (VHI). Objective evaluation of larynx included vibrations of vocal folds visualization using High Speed Digital Imaging (HSDI). Acoustic analysis of voice quality has been performed using DiagNova Technologies. The maximum phonation time (MPT) has been determined. Hyperfunctional dysphonia is the most common clinical form of psychogenic dysphonia. Abnormal breathing pathway influence the reduction of MPT and disturbance of respiratory-phonatory-articulation coordination in patients with psychogenic dysphonia. In psychogenic dysphonia intonation and speech rate disorders are observed. Results of voice self-assessment in the majority of examined patients indicates a mild voice disability.

Burst ratio is a parameter that quanties packet loss patterns in transmission networks. It has been dened for an end-to-end scenario, therefore burst ratio can be determined only if the characteristics of the whole transmission path are known. In this paper, the burst ratio parameter applicability to cases when the transmission path consists of a series of transmission channels with known packet loss rate and burst ratio values is extended. The paper also presents the results of simulations performed with NS2 software, demonstrating the validity of the burst ratio analysis. Consequently, the research makes it possible to determine the value of the burst ratio parameter in concatenated packet networks, which in turn supports delivering higher quality VoIP services.

This paper provides an overview of QoS (quality of services), discusses the need for QoS and presents the QoS toolset. QoS is defined as a measure of performance for a transmission system that reflects its transmission quality and service availability. Service availability is a crucial element of QoS. Before any QoS is implemented successfully, the network infrastructure must be designed to be highly available. The transmission quality is determined by the following factors: loss, delay, and delay variation. There is presented how to examine the impact of these factors on voice performance. This paper presents a testbed for evaluation of quality of delay-sensitive services in IP networks. Major testbed components are: LANForge ICE Network Emulator for creating IP network impairments, InterWatch 95000 Protocol Tester for generating backbone traffic, NetMeeting PC software for conveying calls, Ethereal PC software for network protocol analyzing, and an application for estimating quality of the transmission. The LANForge ICE is able to emulate networks of various latency, jitter, throughput (up to 1 Gbps) and packet degradation (loss, duplication, reordering). In consequence, it allows for testing the impact of these factors on the delay-sensitive services performance. In the paper, an examplary testing scenario for quality of voice traffic evaluation is presented. During the test, focused on addressing the QoS needs of voice traffic, you should keep the following in mind: - loss should be less than 1%, - one-way latency should be less than 150-200 ms, - average jitter should be less than 30 ms, - 21-106 kbps of guaranteed priority bandwidth is required per call (depending on the sampling rate, codec and Layer 2 overhead), - 150 bps (+ Layer 2 overhead) per phone of guaranteed bandwidth is required for Voice Control traffic. It is possible to check if the network conditions meet these requirements. The necessity and importance of assuring delay-sensitive services quality is well understood so, the need of such a testbed is obvious. This is because voice, video and mission critical data have stringent service requirements from the network infrastructure. The testbed allows for assessing practical, in simple way, delay-sensitive services quality under various network conditions. The results can be used as input data to large systems simulation.

Opis:
This paper deals with the burst ratio parameter, which describes the burstiness of a packet loss observed in digital networks. It is one of the input parameters of E-model – the most widely used method of assessing conversational quality of telephony. The burst ratio is defined for one channel scenario so it can be calculated when the whole transmission path has been characterized by a single set of parameters. The main objective of the paper is to extend the burst ratio definition when the transmission path is defined as a tandem concatenation of transmission channels being described by their individual burst ratios. It is assumed that packet loss of a single channel is described by a 2-state Markov chain. The final result of the research is an equation describing the burst ratio parameter when the transmission path consists of multiple concatenated channels. The derived formula has been validated by extensive simulations.

The most convenient way of presenting one- or two-dimensional offered traffic in a network by Markovian chain to evaluate quality of service (QoS). Pictorial presentation of chain becomes very complicated for three dimensional traffic case, required for voice data integrated service/mixed traffic of mobile cellular network; hence application of cut or node equations become a cumbersome job. This paper proposes a model of three-dimensional traffic in a network for both unlimited and limited user case. Here direct analytical method is introduced instead of Markovian chain to achieve traffic parameters.
