The purpose of this paper is to highlight a potential of image-based methods for carrying out research into some hidden dimension of immigrant experience connected with visual perception. Opis:
The paper presents a visual analysis of heat propagation in selected elements of a unique building structure. Numerous spots of construction deterioration and weakening are exemplary to the presented method and to the procedure of concluding for the purpose of combined research and education at the third academic level of education. The described procedures use a thermographic camera. The most attention has been put to thermal bridges to avoid energy loss in further modernization of the investigated object and how the conclusion process can be supported. The discussion is based on four parallel types of camera imaging: thermal, multispectral, thermal fusion and digital. The selected important aspects of measurement conditions have been discussed to justify the reliability of presented measurements.

The purpose of this article is to draw critical attention to the use of photovoice as an anti-oppressive method in research with Aboriginal peoples. In response to the historical vulnerability of Aboriginal peoples to research that “wants to know and define the Other,” anti-oppressive methods deconstruct taken-for-granted research models and focus on privileging Indigenous voices, political integrity, and justice strategies. Anti-oppressive approaches are connected to emancipation and cannot be divorced from the history of racism. Theoretically, photovoice aligns well with anti-oppressive goals, using photographs and storytelling as a catalyst for identifying community issues towards informed solutions. Having roots in Freireian-based processes, photovoice has the goal of engaging citizens in critical dialogues and moving people to social action. Drawing on our recently completed photovoice study, Visualizing Breast Cancer: Exploring Aboriginal Women’s Experiences (VBC), we demonstrate that photovoice seems successful in enhancing critical consciousness among participants, but that outcomes may not be disruptive. While photovoice has the potential to develop counter-hegemonic anti-oppressive knowledge, this may be lost depending on how the research process is encountered; thus, we propose the implementation of a revisionary model which incorporates a culturally safe anti-oppressive lens.

The use of visual materials and methods in teaching so as to appeal to students’ senses is one of the earliest defined and most commonly accepted (especially in the twentieth century) principles governing the activities of religion teachers and students in religion lessons. In order to adhere to this principle one needs a detailed knowledge of teaching norms and methodological guidelines set down under the new religion curricula. In this article, an attempt will be made at describing the use of visual materials as a principle on which the teacher’s educational activities are based in the context of the amended “Core curriculum of the Catholic Church catechesis in Poland” and “Curriculum of RomanCatholic religion teaching”, approved in 2010 by the Commission for Catholic Education of the Polish Episcopal Conference. One shall begin with the understanding of the use of visual materials in general and catechetic didactics. Then, one shall analyse the issues related to this rule as a principle on which the religion teacher’s educational activities are based as proposed in the new, abovementioned curricula. In the conclusion, one describes catechetic suggestions for the authors of new series of textbooks and religion education materials as well as for religion teachers.

The author argues that visual methods are at the crossroads. They can remain in a niche or move into the mainstream by also addressing all people using visual materials. In the social sciences, visual methods encompass photography, video, and graphic representations. With respect to the visual, one has to note that all interpretations that are ontologically dependent on photography require more interpretation. 'Looking at' means 'being framed by,' and this means also the picture maker who is also considered to be a viewer. For the social sciences, pictures provide us with personal insights as well as with a personal record of spatial and social relationships. On this basis one may raise questions like 'how pattern variations occur over time?', 'how are social processes organized?', or 'what is the role of emotion in social life?' These are issues, the author continues, to which visual data can contribute. It may be added that methodological discussion should, however, besides the areas of visual data generation, analysis and interpretation also include solutions for the problem of communicating research findings. Some of these questions can be approached via controlled photo-observation, photo-elicitation techniques and imagery provided by the subjects themselves. Finally, the author turns to the question of what remains to be done? Here, he delineates three main areas: (1) evaluating the theoretical and conceptual basis of visual research, (2) creating public databases for the development and testing of theories, (3) defining 'best practices' for visual research.

Visual methods are reported to have certain advantages when conducting interviews on sensitive topics, such as intimate spaces, home-related ethical issues, and vulnerable families. In this article, we concentrate on two visual methods: social network maps and life-lines. In our research project on children’s well-being and emotional security in multiple family relations, we collected data by interviewing children and asking them to complete social network maps and life-lines. We discuss the suitability of these two visual methods for describing children’s close relationships with their family members and significant others. Combining these two methods during an interview process with children has not very often been tested. It is thus argued that these particular methods help a child to explain his or her family relations and life events. For the researcher interested in studying challenging and complex family relations, they can be extremely useful tools.

William I. Thomas and Florian Znaniecki undoubtedly belong to the precursors of research on migration. With the 100th anniversary of the publishing of The Polish Peasant in Europe and America, the paper prompts a reference to this unique work. The first part of the article discusses contemporary migration processes, the second refers directly to Thomas and Znaniecki’s book, while the third focuses on a new type of personal documents. Produced by migrants and refugees, they may and should be a subject of interest to social researchers.

Opis:
W artykule pokazano możliwość zastosowania metody wizyjnej, jaką jest metoda cyfrowej korelacji obrazów (ang. Digital Image Correlation, DIC), do identyfikacji uszkodzeń w konstrukcjach budowlanych na przykładzie stalowej ramy dwukondygnacyjnej. W tym celu przeprowadzono pomiary przemieszczeń metodą DIC na wybranym fragmencie ramy obciążonej dynamicznie, dla różnych wariantów uszkodzenia wprowadzanego w połączeniach dolnego rygla ze słupami. Przeanalizowano otrzymane wartości przemieszczeń. Wyniki przeprowadzonego eksperymentu wskazują na duży potencjał w zastosowaniu metody DIC, jako alternatywnej metody pomiarowej, pozwalającej pozyskać dane wykorzystywane np. do detekcji uszkodzeń konstrukcji. W pracy pokazano również możliwość zastosowanie prezentowanego systemu do pomiarów szybkozmiennych.
The paper presents the possibilities of applying the visual measurements (namely Digital Image Correlation method, DIC) in the damage identification of building structures on the example of a two-storey steel frame. For this purpose, displacement measurements were carried out on a selected fragment of the steel frame subjected to a dynamic load, for the various variants of the damage introduced in the column – lower spandrel beam joints of the frame. The obtained displacement values were analyzed. The results of this experiment indicate a high potential of the DIC application as an alternative measurement method, which allows to obtain data used for instance in the damage detection. The paper also shows the possibilities of applying the presented system for fast-change measurements.

This article presents the visual research methods (VRM), a procedure containing an iterative circle for detecting smokers and non-smokers among adolescents and young adults. Qualitative and quantitative approaches were used to develop the theoretical framework and questionnaires, conduct workshops, content analysis and statistical modelling, and to examine and interpret the results. The visual context that detects smokers and non-smokers concerns the social norms and environment, attitudes, beliefs, role models, individual factors, situational context and healthy vs. unhealthy lifestyle.
W artykule przedstawiono metody badań wizualnych (VRM), procedurę zawierającą iteracyjne koło do wykrywania palaczy i niepalących wśród młodzieży i młodych dorosłych. Wykorzystano metody jakościowe i ilościowe do opracowania ram teoretycznych i kwestionariuszy, przeprowadzenia warsztatów, analizy danych i modelowania statystycznego oraz do zbadania i interpretacji wyników. Kontekst wizualny, który rozróżnia osoby niepalące i palaczy, dotyczy norm społecznych i środowiska, postaw, przekonań, wzorców do naśladowania, czynników indywidualnych, kontekstu sytuacyjnego oraz zdrowego i niezdrowego stylu życia. VRM dostarcza precyzyjne wyniki dotyczące tego zjawiska oraz oferuje rzeczowy i odpowiedni sposób na jego zbadanie. Interpretacja wizualnego kontekstu palenia dostarcza cennych informacji dla rozwoju metod zapobiegania paleniu w porównaniu z tradycyjnym kwestionariuszem werbalnym.

Visual data analysis is an appealing and increasing field of application. We present two related visual analysis approaches that allow for the visualization of graphical model parameters and time-dependent association rules. When the graphical model is defined over purely nominal attributes, its local structure can be interpreted as an association rule. Such association rules comprise one of the most prominent and wide-spread analysis techniques for pattern detection, however, there are only few visualization methods. We introduce an alternative visual representation that also incorporates time since patterns are likely to change over time when the underlying data was collected from real-world processes. We apply the technique to both an artificial and a complex real-life dataset and show that the combined automatic and visual approach gives more and faster insight into the data than a fully-automatic approach only. Thus, our proposed method is capable of reducing considerably the analysis time.

The paper is based on personal 20-year experience of teaching qualitative methods and methodology of grounded theory. In the following paper I would like to show the usefulness of visual analysis in teaching methodology of grounded theory. A very important tool is sequencing of pictures which gives a comparative insight into empirical data and teaches the comparative method. Students can learn how to compare and find patterns in empirical instances which have visual character. Some of the sequences show stages of action and the sequence which is a linear representation of activity. In other case, the sequences of pictures given to students are not planned. They are almost accidentally created and force students to find patterns by means of the comparative analysis. We should always know what was happening before a picture was taken as well as afterwards, it is similar to sequences analysis in textual data (Silverman, 2007: 61 -84, 146). Students are also encouraged to saturate categories using data from photos. This helps them to proceed with the research from empirical incidents to conceptually elaborated properties of categories and finally to the definition of category. They also get familiar with the procedure of saturating category. In this way they learn visual grounded theory, that is using the visual images for generating categories, properties and hypotheses.

In this way they learn visual grounded theory that is using the visual images for generating categories, properties and hypotheses and also for presenting results of analysis in the final report.

This paper gives a concise overview of the techniques we have used to find out the degree of measuring the quality of rendered images and a level of noise in particular. First part of the paper presents designed and conducted psychophysical experiment involving human subjective judgment. Then, two of the existing numerical image comparison methods are considered in the context of assessing the level of noise produced by global illuminations algorithms. The results of the participants’ subjective responses are correlated with the data obtained from objective mathematical metrics. The main goal of research was to determine the objective and perceptual measure of quality for images with fixed sampling strategy. The results will help to establish the measures of identifying the human perception in the assessment of images generated with global illumination algorithms.
