Opis:
The article contains fragments of three chapters form the book Image Science. Iconology, Visual Culture and Media Aesthetics (Chicago 2015), titled The are no Visual Media , Back to the Drawing Board  and Foundational Sites and Occupied Spaces . W. J. T. Mitchell created in his previous works the key concepts which imply an approach to images as true objects of investigation – an “image science”. Author, continuing with his influential line of thoughts, amplifies interdisciplinary studies of visual media. The chapters also delve into such topics as conections between new media and architecture or the occupation of space in contemporary popular uprisings. Image science  is a call for a method of studying images that overcomes the “two-culture split” between the natural and human sciences.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to present the mechanisms of mediatisation of emotions in TV broadcasts in relation to the messages concerning the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The pandemic time has radically changed the way television works. The production of many TV programmes has been suspended around the world, and the way journalists and editorial staff work has changed, yet the viewership during the pandemic grew all over the world, despite negative emotions being generated. The study relies on a qualitative analysis of the emotion-generating mechanisms in the audiovisual image. The research material was TV programmes about SARS-CoV-2 in March–June 2020. The research tools used permitted an analysis of the content of the message and its formal side (sound, image, graphics, music). The final results were divided into two areas of emotion-generating mechanisms: formal (forms) and thematic (content). The analysis shows that especially negative emotions were evoked in TV programmes during the pandemic: threat, sadness and fear. At the level of form, the following mechanisms were revealed: visual enhancement, gradation, giving meaning, contrast and generalization. In terms of content mechanisms, one can observe the mechanism of drama, content accumulation (blocking), exposure, variable dynamics of positive and negative content, and narrative mechanisms. The observed mechanisms of generating emotions may also lead to manipulation of the recipient through the repetition of negative information or the use of authorities. The conducted analysis confirmed the importance of combining form and content as well as strength, rhythmization and repetition of specific messages in the audiovisual message. The article may be the basis for research on the relationship between emotions and cognition, as well as research on the reception of audiovisual content.
W zakresie mechanizmów treściowych możemy zaobserwować mechanizmy dramatyzmu, akumulacji treści (blokowania), eksponowania, zmiennej dynamiki treści pozytywnych i negatywnych oraz mechanizmy narracji. Przeprowadzona analiza potwierdza wagę łączenia formy i treści. Artykuł może stanowić podstawę do przyszłych badań nad związkami między emocjami a poznaniem oraz recepcją treści audiowizualnych.

Finding a clear-cut boundary delimiting fiction from documentary has always been a controversial, daunting and unthankful undertaking. In the last decade, the blur between the two genres has been reinforced by the rapid advancement of web and AR/VR technologies. Interactive web-documentaries and virtual reality documentaries do not only promote new viewing habits – from swiping smartphone screens to scanning horizons with VR headsets, they shake up the very idea of what a documentary is. In this short scholarly essay, I argue that the feature of interactivity is the driving force redefining the documentary genre. This thesis builds on two case studies: 1) Interactive documentary Atterwasch and 2) VR documentary The Unknown Photographer. In the final section of the essay I revisit the definition of documentary reality and expand it with the addition of André Bazin’s notion of mise en scène.

Opis:
The author proposes a neophenomenological interpretation of the late Jacques Derrida’s deconstruction, by bringing it into the light of (post)secular negative philosophy and indicating the application of its mystic/ecstatic implications on a media techno-vision basis. In this conceptualization, deconstruction/negation, as an ,epoche strategy, not only denudes (kenosis) cognition of the idolatry, characteristic of the traditional methaphysics of presence and the dogmatic religion, but also suspends “the source” itself (the Offenberkeit register), and thus, causes the experience of radical emptiness (chora) as a condition of an opening to the Impossible. The author, by presenting the concept of negative image, demonstrates that technology visual media provide a suitable space (groundlessness) for Impossible to manifest itself in post-industrial culture.

Opis:
The art of conservation has been forced to face entirely new challenges. The sort of art that so far has kept its distance from official circulation, is being intentionally collected, is entering the domain of museum space, and, as a consequence, is becoming the object of the concern expressed by art conservators. Requirements and problems associated with the conservation of audio-visual and digital objects differ considerably from the needs of traditional archival material and monuments of art. The magnetic tape, in contrast to, e. g. the film tape, does not contain traces of the process, which had produced its information structure. Images recorded on magnetic tape are not directly accessible and remained encoded. The characteristic feature of the digital media is a still smaller 'material quality coefficient'. New dilemmas are also created by the interpretation of new media objects. Another noteworthy fact is the great reduction of the period of the durability of the carriers as technology progresses. A different problem involves the constant outdating caused by the rapid development of audiovisual technologies. At present, the fundamental challenge entails the creation of a conception of long-range protection of the new media, and the storage of resources in a world governed by the harsh rules of the market. A conservator or an archivist will not delay the outdating of audio-visual technologies, and does not have any impact on the trend of their growth. He is also incapable of improving the physico-chemical properties of the carriers. It will become imperative to cooperate closely with specialists representing informatics, physics or electronics. Only by entering these new domains one can guaranteed a chance to protect and preserve the new variety of monuments of culture. Obviously the protection of audiovisual collections calls for research and documentation. In the case of valuable magnetic tapes it is crucial to ensure suitable storage conditions. Successive prevention entails cyclical copying of master tapes onto new carriers, prior to the appearance of the first symptoms of disintegration. Next to the heretofore-used analog formats of the master tapes , archives are gradually selecting digital tape formats or keep valuable video material on hard disks. The development of informatics technologies is accompanied by the possibility of a digital reconstruction of the moving image. The software is addressed primarily to the 'digital intermediate' industry and archival films, but can be also applied for the reconstruction of valuable video material. All these solutions are still in the experimental phase and are not widely applied. It is not surprising that neither conservation theory nor praxis can keep up and we are only beginning to learn how to put them to use. The obliteration of the concept of the original and copyright protection causes further anxiety. The above issues must be resolved rapidly if digital imagery is to become part of conservation praxis and institutions protecting art are to become capable of treating their collections suitably.

Opis:
Sharply dressed, smooth, and sporty—these are probably among the first attributes associated with the Russian president Vladimir Putin. This image is promoted by television which still remains a powerful medium in Russia. While the annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation in March 2014 initially led to an increase in the popularity of Putin, his approval rating has significantly fallen since the signing of pension reforms in autumn 2018. This could explain why in September 2018 a new talk show called Moskva.Kreml’.Putin, which offers a synopsis of Putin’s working week, began its broadcast. By analyzing the „new“ image of Putin portrayed in this show and comparing it with his visual presentation in the news program Vremia and the annual talk Priamaia Linia s Vladimirom Putinym, the following paper examines the visual portrayal of Putin transmitted on television. By focusing on the visual, the analysis reveals that the president’s image, and the attributes assigned to him, are established and communicated mostly via the content and arrangement of (moving) pictures. Thus, the study suggests that visual communication on television significantly shapes and influences the perception of the Russian president. This work therefore contributes to a better understanding of television in general and of mass media communication in Russia in particular.
