The article presents the analysis of political campaigns for parliament elections in Slovakia in 2010. It focuses mainly on the use of photographs on billboards. The authors present their own typology of factors affecting the message, contributing to the achievement or non-achievement of the communication goals. The content analysis and visual analysis of the billboards explores their structure and placement in the environment, searching for the elements which encourage subsequent complementation of the billboard picture, or of the text, by the target population. The factor analysis confirms that the billboards particularly prone to complementation were those which were not complemented by their environment, were boring, and did not show the presented person in the bust-view, but rather as a detail in the picture.

Is it possible to look at something without actually noticing it? Is it possible to see something in the picture that is not really there? The answers to these philosophical questions can be obtained by comparing the results of eye-tracking tests combined with interviews based on sociological theories. The answers, however, have more than the philosophical dimension in that they can provide insight into everyday processes of social perception and its application, also for commercial purposes. In the design phase of the present study, we chose a popular advertising folder available for free for the average consumer. While showing the selected photographs to the respondents (all the pictures included people portrayed during everyday activities), we asked them to pay particular attention to the situations presented. Afterwards, each participant took part in a standardised interview. In our view, the conclusions formulated on the basis of the obtained results are relevant not only to the investigated catalogue, but can also be treated as an indicator of how people usually browse through advertisements and what kind of inferences they make about the world on that basis. While most attention should be given to watching the advertisements, we constitute our dreams of a perfect life, environment and the items that furnish it.

Opis:
As fuel injection pressures keep rising, questions focus on additional benefits to be gained from the considerable efforts to achieve and handle the fuel pressure increments. The aim of fuel injection processes is to support the mixing of fuel molecules with oxygen. The steps towards this goal include fuel atomization, evaporation, heat transfer from air into the liquid or vaporized fuel together with transport of fuel for best air utilization. Engineering degrees of freedom include the parameters of the fuel injection system and handling of in-cylinder gas conditions. The paper describes basic high pressure flow processes, spray propagation, evaporation and combustion and the mixing of flame clouds with in-cylinder air for oxidation of high temperature soot particles. Experimental evidence of such processes is derived from laboratory flow tests as well as from optically accessed engines operated under conditions relevant for todays passenger car and heavy duty engines.

Visual data analysis is an appealing and increasing field of application. We present two related visual analysis approaches that allow for the visualization of graphical model parameters and time-dependent association rules. When the graphical model is defined over purely nominal attributes, its local structure can be interpreted as an association rule. Such association rules comprise one of the most prominent and wide-spread analysis techniques for pattern detection, however, there are only few visualization methods. We introduce an alternative visual representation that also incorporates time since patterns are likely to change over time when the underlying data was collected from real-world processes. We apply the technique to both an artificial and a complex real-life dataset and show that the combined automatic and visual approach gives more and faster insight into the data than a fully-automatic approach only. Thus, our proposed method is capable of reducing considerably the analysis time.

Opis:
Visual analysis is one of the basic design tools of a landscape architect. Subsequent advancement in the computer technology provides new opportunities to develop one’s approach to design. At the Cracow School of Landscape Architecture the visual analysis has been evolving alongside other landscape studies. The aim of the article was to examine whether the experience and development of scientific methods is reflected in education. As a result of the analysis of the method of education It was shown that students are successively introduced to the problems of using and applying visual analyses starting from the least challenging view sections to testing the latest research, such as the degree of visibility or specialized fractal panorama analyses. This approach is used not only in the field of design work, but it is also highly regarded in cooperation with the professional environment, such as national parks or landscape park boards.
Analiza widokowa jest jednym z podstawowych narzędzi projektowych architekta krajobrazu. Ko lejne zdobycze techniki komputerowej dostarczają nowych możliwości pozwalających rozbudować metody pracy. W Krakowskiej Szkole Architektury Krajobrazu metody badań ekspozycji rozwijane są równolegle do innych badań nad krajobrazem. Celem artykułu było przebadanie czy doświadczenie i rozwój metod przez naukowców znajduje odzwierciedlenie w edukacji. W wyniku analizy sposobu kształcenia wykazano, że studenci sukcesywnie wprowadzani są w problemy wykorzystania i stosowania analiz widokowych. Od najprostszych przekrojów, po testowanie wyników najnowszych badań, takie jak współczynnik widoczności czy specjalistyczne fraktalne analizy panoram. Podejście to wykorzystywane jest nie tylko w zakresie prac projektowych ale doceniane jest podczas współpracy z instytucjami takimi jak parki narodowe czy zarządy parków krajobrazowych.

This paper analyses the use of table visual variables of statistical data of hospital beds as an important tool for revealing spatio-temporal dependencies. It is argued that some of conclusions from the data about public health and public expenditure on health have a spatio-temporal reference. Different from previous studies, this article adopts combination of cartographic pragmatics and spatial visualization with previous conclusions made in public health literature. While the significant conclusions about health care and economic factors has been highlighted in research papers, this article is the first to apply visual analysis to statistical table together with maps which is called previsualisation.

The article presents researcher’s attempts, methodological problems and queries in embodiment research during a Grounded Theory Methodology based study on social world of ballroom dancers. The research has been conducted among ballroom dancers, flamenco dancers, belly dancers, dance instructors, choreographers and judges. One of the aspects of the research is social construction of embodiment. In the article I will present techniques and methods of research such as autoetnography, interview, observation, photo and video analysis as well as kind of results they may give and what is really studied when using these methods. I will also present how one experiences his/her body in this group. I will try to answer a question: what is the real result of researcher’s attempts in embodiment study in sociology; do we really study body, or its social practices, socially constructed individual experience; how deeply can we make the research when our object (somebody else’s body) is not entirely intersubjectively available for our recognition.

Analiza środowiska wizualnego dostarcza wiele cennych informacji o danym obszarze, które stają się pomocne, np. przy jego ochronie, ocenie stopnia jego atrakcyjności wizualnej i stopnia przydatności do pełnienia określonych funkcji, czy w procesie projektowania. Tereny poprzemysłowe, będące niejednokrotnie integralną częścią miejskiej przestrzeni publicznej, wymagają oprócz innych działań również polepszenia swojego środowiska wizualnego. Dzięki zastosowaniu analizy wizualnej w procesie rewitalizacji obszarów poprzemysłowych uzyskuje się dane, niezbędne w wyborze kierunków działań zmierzających do poprawy wizerunku przestrzeni miejskiej. Kształtowanie miejskiej przestrzeni publicznej w sferze wizualnej wymaga między innymi działań w zakresie polepszania klimatu akustycznego. Obecnie warstwa dźwiękowa krajobrazu jest monotonna i zdominowana przez hałas komunikacyjny. Ochrona środowiska przed tą uciążliwością sprowadza się zazwyczaj do przestrzegania dopuszczalnych poziomów hałasu określonych w odpowiednich aktach prawnych. Toteż wcześniejsze projektowanie krajobrazu akustycznego może być jednym ze sposobów nie tylko uatrakcyjnienia przestrzeni, ale przede wszystkim jej ochrony przed tym szkodliwym zanieczyszczeniem środowiska.
Analysis of visual environment provides valuable and useful information concerning particular area, for example, in protection, in the process of assessing the degree of the visual attractiveness and the degree of suitability to perform specific iunctions, or in the design process of the area. Brownfields, which are frequently integral part of urban public space, in addition to other measures require also the improvement of visual environment. By using visual analysis in the process of revitalizing brownfields are obtained specific data necessary in the selection of measures which are aimed to improve the image of urban space. Shaping of urban public space in the visual sphere requires, inter alia, measures improving the acoustic climate. Currently, the audio layer of the landscape is monotonous and dominated by traffic noise. Protecting the environment against the discomfort usually is limited to respecting the permissiblc noise levels specified in the relevant legislation. As a result, designing the sound landscape ahead may be one of solutions to not only creating more attractive space, but primarily to protect the environment against this harmful type of pollution.

Zagadnienie ochrony historycznie ukształtowanych krajobrazów miejskich przed niekorzystnymi działaniami inwestycyjnymi jest niezwykle złożone. Badanie skutków planowanych działań jest trudne do przeprowadzenia przy pomocy tradycyjnych technik analizowania przestrzeni miejskiej. Szansą na ułatwienie i przyspieszenie tego procesu, a także jego obiektywizację jest zastosowanie cyfrowych technik analitycznych wykorzystujących wirtualne modele miast. W niniejszym artykule przedstawiona zostanie metoda interpretacji budowy krajobrazu miejskiego z wykorzystaniem technik modelowania cyfrowego. Analizie kątów widokowych poddana zostanie jedna z najbardziej atrakcyjnych panoram Lublina - widok ze Wzgórza Czwartek. W pracy wykorzystano autorską aplikacje komputerową opracowana przez autorkę. Możliwość jej praktycznego zastosowania została wykazana w projektach planistycznych wykonanych dla Gminy Miasta Szczecin w latach 2005-2007 oraz dla Gminy Miasta Lublin w latach 2010-2011.
Protection of historically developed urban landscapes against adverse investment activities is extremely complex. Examination of effects of planned activities is difficult to perform using traditional analyzing techniques. An opportunity to facilitate and accelerate this process and its objectification is the use of virtual city models. This paper presents a method of interpretation of urban landscape using method of dynamic analysis of visual angles. It will be shown on the example of one of the most magnificent panoramas of Lublin - a view from the Czwartek Hill. The method was used in practice in the projects carried out for the City of Szczecin in the years 2005-2007 and for the Municipality of Lublin in 2010-2011.

This article aims at exploring and problematizing the role of visual designs, as applied in a selection of five popular recent college textbooks that introduce students to Cultural and Media Studies. It can be observed that academic textbooks are increasingly produced in alignment with the properties of contemporary visual culture. The article reviews some of these properties, focusing on the growing need for enhancing visual literacy. It presents the framework of multimodal analysis, as the textbook is co-constituted by verbal and visual modes, which are integrated through a common design. The analytic categories of multimodal analysis allow for a qualitative, yet systematic, examination of some compositional and semiotic resources that have been applied in textbooks. The analysis focuses on textbook typography, supra-textual organization, the number and choice of figures/tables/lists, the layout of pages, structure of chapter/section, and type and framing of visuals. This is followed by a function-oriented critical discussion of these stylistic properties and of the implications of certain compositional preferences for teaching/learning. The study identifies designs that result in diversifying and aestheticizing textbooks visually, as well as hierarchizing and objectivizing knowledge. While both advantages and disadvantages of currently popular designs can be found, attention is drawn to the fact that visually-enhanced designs might fail to engage students in critical reflection, simplify the issues, and divert attention from the merits of exposition/argument, particularly if students lack skills in visual literacy.
