Opis:
This research attempted to establish the content validity of an experimental rehabilitation programme which was carried out in order to show an increase in reading performance – the Reading Performance Vision Rehabilitation Programme (or the RPVRP). The programme was tested on adults with low vision (severe and profound) in the Czech Republic. The following methods of experimental testing were used: reading speed, number of mistakes, and the ability to use obtained information (pretest, posttest No. 1, posttest No. 2) for evaluating the level of increase in reading skills. Results: Our findings confirm that the experimental Reading Performance Vision Rehabilitation Programme significantly influenced the effectivity of using vision potential and increased reading performance in the investigated cases.

Introduction: A vision problem is a condition which involves not only visual difficulty but also blindness. Purpose: The purpose of this short review study is the early recognition of vision problems in children, the proper treatment as well as their prevention. Materials and methods: The material of the study has been recent articles on the subject that have been found mainly in the electronic database Medline, (HEAL-Link), with the following keywords: children, vision impairment, blindness, treatment, prevention. Review: A high risk group of individuals that frequently presents ophthalmic severe lesions leading to blindness consists of children with prenatal and perinatal adverse effects. Conclusions: Education gives the opportunity of co-existence between the blind and people who are able to see. This is the path to social inclusion of individuals with vision problems. Moreover, it is estimated these two groups would have more points in common than differences between them through this experience.

The purpose of this study was to coduct a visual screening of students in special schools with a set of tests chosen by the faculty and staff of the Department of Optometry and Visual System Biology of Poznań University of Medical Sciences. Students mentally handicapped (N = 318) between the age of 7 and 22 (mean age 14.4 ± 2.84) were screened. Group 1 were children aged 7 to 12 (n = 65), group 2 were subjects aged 13 to 16 (n = 167) and group 3 included people aged between 17 and 22 (n = 86). The scope of the screening included: auto-refractometer (Shin-Nippon A type) without cycloplegia, visual acuity for distance, positive lens test +1.00 D (diopter), spatial vision (stereo) at near, color vision and near point of convergence. 72 children (22.6%) were prescribed correction, but only 30 children actually wore glasses on a permanent basis (9.4%). Of those not using correction (n = 288): in group 1 the adopted criteria for visual acuity for the right eye were not met by the 38% of the respondents or 35% for the left eye; group 2 – 36% of the respondents failed (right eye) and 31% (left eye); 50% of students in group 3 did not meet the visual acuity criterion. Stereo was failed in groups 1 and 3 by almost 60% while in group 2 the test was failed by 47% of the respondents. The results of the refraction revealed a small degree of myopia in each eye of 38% in the entire sample. Hyperopia was found in 42% (right eye) of the students whereas 44% (left eye) in the entire sample. Astigmatism ranging from 0.75 to 2.00 D was noted in the case of 32% of people. This study indicates the need for a systematic vision screening, more than just visual acuity at distance, among the students in special schools.

The progress and miniaturisation of electronic instruments demand the use of more specialised measurement equipment for their testing and sometimes they consist of sophisticated measurement stations built as measurement computers which use measurement cards linked by high capacity interfaces. But sometimes decisions are taken on the base of visual events as there are tests for which the start of a measurement cycle exploiting another method is initiated by visual changes of components like the appearance, colour, size, etc. and this paper deals with it.

In this essay, Fr. Garrigou-Lagrange refutes Kantian and occasionalist notions of sensation that have been smuggled into Thomism and Catholic thought. He maintains that sensation by its very nature requires an object that is sensed, since sensation without a sensible object is no sensation at all. To defend this position, he draws upon Aristotle, St. Thomas, and the Thomistic Commentators, arguing that the opposite position not only denies the distinctions between hallucination and sensation, bodily vision and imaginary vision, but also ultimately denies that the metaphysical certitude of the first principles of reason are materially resolved in that which is sensed.

Opis:
The paper focuses on the New Vision – one of the most important developments in the history of the twentieth-century photography, whose ambition was to modernize human perception, hence also society. A project with such an objective, characteristic of the avant-garde, required not only the use of photography as a tool of “ocularcentrism,” to use a term coined by Martin Jay, but also some more solid epistemological and ontological foundation. The author analyzes the project of the New Vision, introducing two interpretive contexts, i.e. astrology and astronomy, which are understood as specific paradigms of cognition and knowledge. First, both concepts are located in a more general discourse of the philosophy of history (Nietzsche, Benjamin), and second, they are related to the practice and theory of the New Vision and the idea of developing a new vision of reality, shown at the famous “Film und Foto” exhibition (Stuttgart, 1929). The basis of the present interpretation is methodological reflection on the ideologization of photography in the so-called revisionist studies which favor the critique of the apparatus of power. Instead, the author proposes a concept of photographic vision connecting the picture and the spectator or, in other words, calling for taking into consideration the process of reception. This proposal, close to Hans Belting’s anthropology of the image, renounces the idea of the passive spectator, subject to the picture, in favor of the analysis of its perception. In the context of the New Vision, the picture-spectator relationship has been approached in terms of astrology and astronomy.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to present the subjective perspective of a person with congenital low vision who experienced gradual vision deterioration up to total loss. The case study method was used, in which the narrative biographic interview was the main technique of collecting data. In the analysed narratives, certain milestones were identified in the process of coping with the consequences of progressive impairment. Those were the situations when the subject was no longer able to perform a specific task, which she had earlier performed under visual control. They made the subject realise the progressive nature of the disease and inevitably confronted her with the acquisition of permanent severe impairment. Those situations caused temporary disruption of her psychological balance and increased her demand for emotional support. With time, however, they also motivated the subject to use previously rejected rehabilitation devices and techniques. Lack of knowledge of functional implications of eye conditions (including reduced acuity and contrast sensitivity, field defects, light/dark adaptation problems, etc.) among family members and other people hindered the process of providing optimal instrumental support to the subject.

Opis:
Performing social roles, including family-related ones, by people with visual impairment is associated with experiencing various types of difficulties It is basically a consequence of the socially established negative image of these people who areperceived as not fully competent and requiring assistance. Previous few studies devoted to the motherhood of blind and partially sighted women indicate relatively frequent reactions of their social environment expressing the belief that a visually impaired woman is not able to perform her role as a wife and mother in a proper way. The psychosocial situation of fathers with visual impairment is rarely analysed in research activities, and knowledge of the relationship between gradual loss of vision and experience of fatherhood is relatively poor. The aim of the article is to present the results of a qualitative study focused on learning the subjective experience of performing the role of a parent by a man with progressive vision loss. In the biographical study of an individual case, the narrative interview technique was used, and the analysis of the collected material was referred to such spheres of experiencing fatherhood as: the concept of role, sources of satisfaction and positive experience related to the role, perceived relationships between the way of performing the role and progressive impairment.

BackgroundVision standards exist in many occupations with particular reference to medical science. The presence of a sufficient level of binocular vision is especially important in surgical specialty to perform visually demanding procedures. The purpose of this study was to reveal the level of awareness of one’s binocular status among medical students, and the significance of having binocular vision in terms of specialty choice.Material and Methodsself-constructed questionnaire was given to all subjects enrolled in the study. The first group comprised 53 students from the second and third year of the Medical University of Lodz, who then underwent an ophthalmological examination with binocularity assessment. The second group included 57 students of the last years of the Medical Faculty, who did the same survey and outlined how the ophthalmology course improved their knowledge of stereoacuity and vision requirements for the chosen specialty. Statistical analysis was performed using Person’s χ2 test.ResultsOverall, 32% (N = 17) of the students from the first group and 84% (N = 48) from the second group stated to be familiar with the term “binocularity” and its importance in performing surgical procedures. The awareness of the existing occupational contraindications related to low visual acuity and binocularity was declared by 16% (N = 9) and 54% (N = 31) of the subjects included in each group, respectively. University lectures were indicated as the main source of knowledge by 28% (N = 15) of the individuals from the first group and by 59% (N = 39) from the second group. The ophthalmology course was considered to be sufficiently covering the basics needed for the future doctor by 34 resident physicians (60%).ConclusionsThe medical students’ awareness of their own binocular status appears low. There is a strong need for implementing at least some quality standards for visual assessment to decide if a given student has an adequate eye function to participate in surgical procedures.

The presented research concerns 11-year-old Greek students’ mental representations of the mechanisms of vision in conditions of natural and artificial light, as well as the persistence of those representations in terms of the two different states of lighting and the expression form of the provided answers (oral speech; sketches). The study consisted of two phases: test interviews and an interview process, where personal interviews were conducted with 30 participants. The results showed that the 11-year-old pupils employed the majority of the vision schemes that are included in the international bibliography; however, they tended to use the Sea of Light mechanism and a new scheme the researchers called Illumination of the Object. The schemes employed, however, are not consistent, either throughout the different states of lighting, or in the 3-D and 2-D world.

Opis:
Radar machine vision is an emerging research field in the mobile robotics. Because Synthetic Aperture Radars (SAR) are robust against weather and light condition, they pro‐ vide more useful and reliable information than optical images. On the other hand, the data processing is more complicated and less researched than visible light images processing. The main goal of our research is to build sim‐ ple and efficient method of SAR image analysis. In this ar‐ ticle we describe our research related to SAR image seg‐ mentation and attempts to detect elements such as the buildings, roads and forest areas. Tests were carried out for the images made available by Leonardo Airborne & Space System Company.

The purpose of this thesis was to investigate and analyze the reasons for the lack of adaptation to progressive lenses on examples taken from the optical practices. As a research method, there were used two surveys addressed to the employees of the optical showrooms. They were distributed through the trade group on Facebook and by e-mails. The first one of the questionnaires allowed for collecting statistics on the incidence of problems with adaptation to progressive glasses and the probable causes of these difficulties. Ultimately, after analyzing the responses and rejecting a dozen of them because of the low credibility, this survey received 196 reliable responses, which gives a satisfactory measurement uncertainty of 7%. The second questionnaire, which in its form was reminiscent of the interview, concerned specific cases of problems with adaptation to progressive glasses. It has collected descriptions of the different methods for solving the problems with progressive glasses during “adaptation guarantee” time by the staff of the optical showrooms. The results obtained can contribute to the improvement of the opticians’ competences.

Open, broken, and improperly closed manholes can pose problems for autonomous vehicles and thus need to be included in obstacle avoidance and lane-changing algorithms. In this work, we propose and compare multiple approaches for manhole localization and classification like classical computer vision, convolutional neural networks like YOLOv3 and YOLOv3-Tiny, and vision transformers like YOLOS and ViT. These are analyzed for speed, computational complexity, and accuracy in order to determine the model that can be used with autonomous vehicles. In addition, we propose a size detection pipeline using classical computer vision to determine the size of the hole in an improperly closed manhole with respect to the manhole itself. The evaluation of the data showed that convolutional neural networks are currently better for this task, but vision transformers seem promising.
