ObjectivesThe physical activity level (PAL) has significantly decreased as a result of the social distancing and lockdown related to the COVID‑19 pandemic, but there is a lack of knowledge on the correlates of PAL during the pandemic. The aim of this research was to examine the influence of pre-pandemic sports participation and substance use and misuse (SUM) on PAL during the COVID‑19 pandemic.Material and MethodsThe study included 661 high-school students from Bosnia and Herzegovina (aged 15–18 years, 292 females). The investigation included 2 testing waves: before the COVID‑19 pandemic (baseline, January 2020) and during the COVID‑19 lockdown (follow-up, April 2020). The variables included PAL as measured by the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Adolescents, sports factors, and SUM.ResultsSports factors at baseline were positively correlated with PALs at both baseline and follow-up. Smoking tobacco negatively affected PALs at both baseline and follow-up. Alcohol consumption was positively correlated with PAL at baseline but had no effect on PAL at follow-up.ConclusionsThis study confirmed the importance of sports participation in maintaining PAL during challenging situations, such as the COVID‑19 lockdown. The substance-specific influence of SUM on PAL before and during the lockdown points to evident social and cultural aspects of SUM behaviors in adolescents. Further studies evidencing the cumulative effects of PAL decline during the lockdown are warranted.

Opis:
Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) is an important industrial crop. Among the diseases causing losses in tobacco cultivation, viral ones are of particular importance due to the very low effectiveness of chemical protection allowing only for vector control. The greatest threat to tobacco cultivation in Poland and in many countries of the world is posed by potato virus Y (PVY), tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) and, in recent years, the increasingly frequent tobacco mosaic virus (TMV). The genetic resources studies carried out in the genus Nicotiana have shown a wide variation in species resistance, assessed biologically, serologically and molecularly, depending on the virus used and, in the case of PVY, also on the specific isolate. The results of the assessment of resistance in Nicotiana accessions presented in this paper, gathered from literature data as well as from our own research, allow us to broaden and systematise our knowledge on the sources of resistance to viral diseases. This is the only such an extensive study in this field. It provides an excellent information base for the appropriate selection of accessions for use in resistance breeding.

Opis:
Choć stanowi on ledwie wycinek medialnej rzeczywistości, doskonale pokazuje kierunek, w jakim podążyło współczesne dziennikarstwo informacyjne.
Information is what the media consider that should be. Exposing certain themes makes these media (and accordingly articles they made) socially important, but it can have different backgrounds. One is to keep the audience in a sense of danger, which can be reduced by media coverage. Through the buzz and repetition of certain events, the media creates a general fear that ultimately does not go beyond the “media” dimension. Thus, information becomes a pseudo-theme, created for the internal needs of the editorial office, or for specific groups of interests. The purpose of this text is to outline a number of “media diseases” that were disproportionate to the state of emergency, and were “explained” in the Polish media after 2000. Although it’s a piece of media reality, barely, but it perfectly shows the direction in which modern journalism has gone.

Opis:
Introduction. Arthropod-borne viruses are important causes of human morbidity worldwide. However, the available literatur and the epidemiological data concerning the importation to Poland of globally emerging arboviral infections, such as DENV, CHIKV, WNV, or ZIKV, are scarce. Only few seroepidemiologic studies concerning WNV in animals or humans in Poland have been published. Objective. The aim of this review paper is to summarize and present the current state of knowledge and the perspectives for research concerning the importation and the risk posed by the introduction to Poland of the four above-mentioned arboviral diseases. Current state of knowledge. Climate change may facilitate the northward expansion of both the vectors for diseases previously unseen in Europe, as well as of the viruses themselves, resulting in autochthonous cases of diseases previously exclusively imported. Little is known about the importation of arboviral diseases to Poland because of the frequently asymptomatic or self-limiting course of the disease, lack of epidemiologic studies or effective disease reporting, as well as inadequate access to diagnostic methods. Conclusions. Further epidemiologic studies in Polish travellers are necessary in order to prevent importation or introduction of the above-mentioned viruses, and to act against potential problems related to blood transfusion or organ transplantation from infected donors.

To the issue of the ecology of environmental focal diseases (conceptual-analytical study) There was conducted the scientific-analytical study on the problem of the ecology of environmental focal diseases. Substantiated on the modern data of molecular biology, virology, immunology and epidemiology, the authors suggests that the origin of biogenetic interspecies associations are based on the sapronotic nature of influenza virus, particularly. On the preadaptive stage of migration process there are stimulated the occurrence of the variants whereas the water birds and mammalians, including humans, are susceptible. The development of the measures preventing reassociation is a base of the prevention of this viral infection in the future.

Opis:
Dynamically growing number of airline passengers and flights, especially intercontinental ones, is a key factor conducive to the spread of infectious diseases. The threat to public health may be even more noticeable if it is taken into account, that the developing countries record larger increase in air traffic than most European high developed states with good sanitary conditions. The aim of the study is to make a review of the literature concerning risk assessment and ways to prevent transmission of infectious diseases aboard civil aircrafts. Airline-associated spread of infectious diseases can refer to airborne and vector-borne diseases, as well as these transmitted by fecal-oral route. The particular danger of rapid spread of a disease through airline passengers is caused by influenza virus strains with the potential for causing pandemics or coronaviruses that are infectious agents of MERS and SARS. Passengers suffering from active tuberculosis are also a reason of a serious epidemiological concern. Also other airborne diseases like measles can be easily transmitted by air transport when travelling from endemic countries. On the other hand, flight-related food poisonings are less and less frequent – the most common cause are still bacteria of the Salmonella genus. Among vector-borne diseases, particular attention is paid to the problem of possible transfer of mosquitoes infected with West Nile Virus. In the prevention of the spread of communicable diseases via air transport, there are important factors such as: efficient identifying of sick travellers and crew members, use of personal protective equipment (such as masks with HEPA filter) by passengers travelling alongside sick person, efficient ventilation inside the passenger cabin, proper disinfection of aircrafts' interiors, vaccination of cabin crews against influenza and proper preparation and handling of catering provided to aircrafts.

Many pathogenic micro-organisms are likely to attack passengers of cruise ships and other vessels or travel between continents as a peculiar type of a "stowaway". The epidemiological tests conducted since 1987 with regard to watercraft led to the coining of a term known as the Sick Boat Syndrome (SBS). The main illnesses encountered on watercraft include gastrointestinal diseases (foodborne) and Legionellosis. Additionally, the ventilation and airconditioning systems of old commercial ships (the so-called Tramps) constitute a real technical challenge. Conditioned air (with removed undesired odour and micro-organisms) should constitute ca. 25% of circulating air. In practice this situation is not typical for vessels of this class. Unclean air poses a real hazard for the crew.
