The reality of everyday life outside of its “here and now” also includes phenomena that are not avai- lable to us “here and now” (Berger, Luckmann 2010:36). This means, as P.L. Berger and T. Luckmann argue, that we experience everyday life in different degrees of closeness and remoteness, both spatially and temporally. The contemporary reality of everyday life forces us to transfer a significant part of our life activities to the virtual space which is tangled with our “here and now” in a quantifiable way. Nowadays it is impossible to find a sphere of human life which has not been transferred to virtual space to any extent. Starting from acquiring information, managing our finances, trough communication with others, to selling goods and services. The purpose of this article is to discuss the phenomenon of consumption virtualization which can be undoubtedly observed trough the communication platform under discussion. What is certainly one of the reasons for the transfer and satisfaction of consumer needs to the Internet, it is a noticeable shift in modern society towards image culture. Therefore, the article will characterize the specificity and principles of functioning of Instagram taking into account the content published there on selected profiles.

However, the situation is different in the case of a micronation – a state simulation on the Internet micronation – state simulation on the Internet. That is why the aim of this article is to present the way of constructing social hierarchy on the example of Principality of Sarmatia. It is assumed that both language and image are status indicators of citizens in the aforementioned community. Therefore, the verification of assumptions is based on an analysis of 40 profiles of Sarmacja’s citizens. The analysis results show that the use of language and image as status indicators of citizens is linked at the structural and semantic level to certain, specific to Sarmacja rules.

In the paper, two preprocessing methods for virtual view synthesis are presented. In the first approach, both horizontal and vertical resolutions of the real views and the corresponding depth maps are doubled in order to perform view synthesis on images with densely arranged points. In the second method, real views are filtered in order to eliminate blurred or improperly shifted edges of the objects. Both methods are performed prior to synthesis, thus they may be applied to different Depth-Image-Based Rendering algorithms. In the paper, for both proposed methods, the achieved quality gains are presented.

Opis:
Maps with 3D visual models are becoming a remarkable feature of 3D map services. High-resolution image data is obtained for the construction of 3D visualized models.The3D map not only provides the capabilities of 3D measurements and knowledge mining, but also provides the virtual experienceof places of interest, such as demonstrated in the Google Earth. Applications of 3D maps are expanding into the areas of architecture, property management, and urban environment monitoring. However, the reconstruction of high quality 3D models is time consuming, and requires robust hardware and powerful software to handle the enormous amount of data. This is especially for automatic implementation of 3D models and the representation of complicated surfacesthat still need improvements with in the visualisation techniques. The shortcoming of 3D model-based maps is the limitation of detailed coverage since a user can only view and measure objects that are already modelled in the virtual environment. This paper proposes and demonstrates a 3D map concept that is realistic and image-based, that enables geometric measurements and geo-location services. Additionally, image-based 3D maps provide more detailed information of the real world than 3D model-based maps. The image-based 3D maps use geo-referenced stereo images or panoramic images. The geometric relationships between objects in the images can be resolved from the geometric model of stereo images. The panoramic function makes 3D maps more interactive with users but also creates an interesting immersive circumstance. Actually, unmeasurable image-based 3D maps already exist, such as Google street view, but only provide virtual experiences in terms of photos. The topographic and terrain attributes, such as shapes and heights though are omitted. This paper also discusses the potential for using a low cost land Mobile Mapping System (MMS) to implement realistic image 3D mapping, and evaluates the positioning accuracy that a measureable realistic image-based (MRI) system can produce. The major contribution here is the implementation of measurable images on 3D maps to obtain various measurements from real scenes.

Opis:
In this paper, a modification of the graph-based depth estimation is presented. The purpose of proposed modification is to increase the quality of estimated depth maps, reduce the time of the estimation, and increase the temporal consistency of depth maps. The modification is based on the image segmentation using superpixels, therefore in the first step of the proposed modification a segmentation of previous frames is used in the currently processed frame in order to reduce the overall time of the depth estimation. In the next step, a depth map from the previous frame is used in the depth map optimization as the initial values of a depth map estimated for the current frame. It results in the better representation of silhouettes of objects in depth maps and in the reduced computational complexity of the depth estimation process. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed modification the authors performed the experiment for a set of multiview test sequences that varied in their content and an arrangement of cameras. The results of the experiments confirmed the increase of the depth maps quality - the quality of depth maps calculated with the proposed modification is higher than for the unmodified depth estimation method, apart from the number of the performed optimization cycles. Therefore, use of the proposed modification allows to estimate a depth of the better quality with almost 40% reduction of the estimation time. Moreover, the temporal consistency, measured through the reduction of the bitrate of encoded virtual views, was also considerably increased.

Opis:
In the art of the 20th century, space became the basic material. Today, digital media and VR and AR technologies are used to cross the visual and space barriers, but always at the expense of experiencing reality. The spatial turn in culture results from the post-avant-garde ideas of art that cuts itself off from ancient art. Using the example of the fresco by Andrea del Pozzo from the Sant’Ignazio church in Rome, we will show analogies between baroque illusionist painting and digital visual media. It turns out that contemporary art arrives at the space issues that have been practiced in architecture and art since antiquity. The space created by painting illusion as a total work of art exhibits many features of contemporary art and the phenomena of VR and AR such as intermediality, immersion, interactivity. Spatial turn arguments can be used to enhance the potential of classic painting language in architecture.

Virtual communities between security, danger, myth and reality The main subject of this article is to present virtual space and considerations regarding security and threat faced by its users. In virtual space, everyone can exchange information, presenting one’s image. An attempt was made to analyse virtual communities from the perspective of the myths about Thanatos and Narcissus in the context of security and threat. Similarities of and differences between social and virtual spaces are discussed herein. A simple division of internet users into digital immigrants and digital natives was pointed out. Attention was paid to the significance of the fourth industrial revolution in which data and algorithms determine human life and decisions. The Greek myths of Thanatos and Narcissus were presented in the article, and their references to virtual space were made. In this context, events related to the implementation of these myths were presented in relation to selfies (Narcissus) and games in which there is a threat to the safety of players (Thanatos). Then, the issues of threat and building security, as well as counteracting threats in virtual space are discussed. Generally, it has been recognized that virtual communities are generally meeting and contact points that can help to develop individuals and organisations, even though they can, occasionally, be a source of danger. As an example, an analysis of the implementation of tasks associated with the game “blue whale and taking a selfie” was given.

Opis:
Simultaneous perception of audio and visual stimuli often causes concealment or misrepresentation of information actually contained in these stimuli. Such effects are called the "image proximity effect" or the "ventriloquism effect" in the literature. Until recently, most research carried out to understand their nature was based on subjective assessments. The authors of this paper propose a methodology based on both subjective and objectively retrieved data. In this methodology, objective data reflect the screen areas that attract most attention. The data were collected and processed by an eye-gaze tracking system. To support the proposed methodology, two series of experiments were conducted – one with a commercial eye-gaze tracking system Tobii T60, and another with the Cyber-Eye system developed at the Multimedia Systems Department of the Gdańsk University of Technology. In most cases, the visual-auditory stimuli were presented using a 3D video. It was found that the eye-gaze tracking system did objectivize the results of experiments. Moreover, the tests revealed a strong correlation between the localization of a visual stimulus on which a participant’s gaze focused and the value of the "image proximity effect". It was also proved that gaze tracking may be useful in experiments which aim at evaluation of the proximity effect when presented visual stimuli are stereoscopic.

Opis:
From the perspective of cultural anthropology, immersion is a psychosocial phenomenon consisting in absorbing consciousness of a viewer completely fascinated by a perceived message. Deceptive impression of communing with reality is a psychosomatic illusion offered as a standard by digital extensions: the internet communications, computer animation, artificial world of video games of various kinds, as well as films of the new and the latest generation. Extension transference (a term used by Edward T. Hall) is nothing new. However, constantly expanding macro-social scale of this process is something new. As a result, the growing effects of contemporary digital extension transference from the 2.0 cyberspace became, as never recorded before, widespread and massive. Today’s societies experience one of its most dangerous effects which turns out to be snowballing immersion. Immersion considered in a comprehensive manner in the light of: communication theory, semiotics and cultural anthropology opens a new field of research not only on the characteristics of artistic works (resp. the art of moving images), but also all categories of audiovisual works. Studying this phenomenon, which is now more and more common among the information age societies, enormously expands the “space of theory” and the scope of communication potential of non-verbal categories of languages, to start with the language of moving images. In an analysis of this phenomenon Marek Hendrykowski advocates linguistic and cultural orientation in the study on complex mechanisms of immersive disorders, emphasizing not only the individual (referring to the life of the individual), but also the social effects of digital frene.
