    Opis:
    This article focuses on the history of Indians in South Africa. In November 2010 the community celebrated their 150 years of settlement. Between 1860 and 1911 the Colony of Natal imported from different regions of India over 150 000 Indians to work primarily on its sugar cane plantations. The analysis covers the process of settlement in Natal, including the activism of Mahatma Gandhi and the government’s creation of an Indian township (Chatsworth) to the south of Durban. After 150 years on South African land, Indians assimilated with the native population, calling themselves nationals of South Africa and repudiating the term „immigrant”. Despite cultural, religious and linguistic differences in the past, Indians today uphold their heritage in the modern upper-class society of South Africa.

    Post-apartheid South African schools are contending with unprecedented incidents and rates of violence that have not only brought untold humiliation to learners and teachers alike but have, in many instances, forced schools to redefine the way in which they function, and indeed, if they function. Repeated forms of condemnation, policy re-strategising and punitive measures have not only been inadequate, but have laid bare the sheer unpredictability of violence and its forms. In offering a dual-dialogue – one in addressing violence and the other directed at the inadequate response from education authorities to violence – we offer an interpretative analysis on the one hand, of how to think about violence, and on the other hand, about how a citizenship education of becoming can deal with the unpredictable consequences of violence in its own potentiality. We commence by looking at violence in South African schools, followed by an exploration of encounters, and summoning others to speech as a means through which to speak to violence.

    Apartheid był unikalnym zjawiskiem występującym na terenie Republiki Południowej Afryki. Było to poważne zagrożenie bezpieczeństwa. Najprościej można je zdefiniować jako system polityczny, który określał relacje między rasą białą a innymi rasami występującymi na terenie RPA. Apartheid objawiał się poprzez: dyskryminację, niechęć, segregację, nierówne traktowanie, prześladowanie ludności „innego” koloru. Separacja doprowadziła do licznych problemów mających miejsce w Południowej Afryce. Celem artykułu jest identyfikacja i opis genezy oraz ewolucji zjawiska apartheidu w RPA. Jako przedmiot badań przyjęto wpływ apartheidu na kształtowanie współczesnego państwa.
    Apartheid was a unique phenomenon in South Africa. It was a serious security risk. The easiest way to define them is the political system that defined the relationship between the white race and other races in South Africa. Apartheid manifested itself trough: discrimination, unequal treatment, persecution of people of “different” color. The separation led to numerous problems in South Africa. The purpose of the article is to identify and describe the origins and evolution of the apartheid phenomenon in South Africa. The subject of research was the influence of apartheid on the shaping of the modern state.
