Opis:
Traditionally, upwelling-related studies in the Baltic Sea have been limited to the period from May to September. Based on wintertime in situ measurements at two nearshore locations in the Gulf of Finland, clear evidence of winter “warm” upwelling events was detected and analysed. The process was very common. At a 10 m deep location, upwelling caused water temperature (T) to switch from 0—1 to 4—5°C and salinity (S) to switch from 4.5 to 6 PSU; at 20 m depth it caused a switch in T between 1 and 2—4°C and in S between 5.5 and 6.8 PSU. Differently from summer upwelling, T and S variations were positively correlated to each other. Salinity variations remained roughly the same throughout the winter, whereas T differences were higher in winter onset, then decreased to ca. 1°C, and increased again after the process reversed to summer-type upwelling in April—May. Based on analysis of SatBaltyk (January to March) sea surface temperature and salinity product imagery, winter upwelling occurrence along the North Estonian coast was 21—28% over 2010—2021, and slightly less along the Finnish coast. Regarding S variations, winter upwelling occurred with roughly similar frequencies and impacts in the northern and southern parts of the gulf. However, the impacts on T and sea ice conditions were highly asymmetrical. Upwelling kept the Estonian coast ice-free longer and water temperatures slightly higher than at the Finnish coast. Winter upwelling as a phenomenon has long been ignored and therefore probably underestimated.

Opis:
The objective of the paper is to document and examine the major upwelling event that occurred along the northern coast of Estonia in August 2006. With a horizontal extension of 360 km, the event was caused by persistent easterlies and was noticed by a large number of holidaymakers, as it reduced the temperature of the coastal sea to a chilly 5–10◦C for about a month. In situ measurements from an RDCP current profiler revealed an along-wind coastal jet of up to 60 cm s−1 and a weak near-bottom countercurrent. The depths of the pycnocline and nutricline rose. The maximum drop in water temperature was 16◦C, that of salinity was 3.6 PSU. Analysis of satellite images confirmed the large extension and the prominence of the event.

Opis:
The diffusive component of the vertical flux of particulate organic carbon (POC) from the surface ocean layer has been estimated using a combination of the mixed layer model and ocean color data from the SeaWiFS satellite. The calculations were carried out for an example location in the north polar Atlantic centered at 75◦N and 0◦ E for the time period of 1998–2004. The satellite estimates of surface POC derived using a regional ocean color algorithm were applied as an input to the model driven by local surface heat and momentum fluxes. For each year of the examined period, the diffusive POC flux was estimated at 200-m depth from April through December. The highest flux is generally observed in the late fall as a result of increased heat loss and convectional mixing of surface waters. A relatively high diffusive POC flux is also observed in early spring, when surface waters are weakly stratified. In addition, the model results demonstrate significant interannual variability. The highest diffusive POC flux occurred in 1999 (about 4500 mg m−2 over the 9-month period). In 1998 and 2002 the estimated flux was about two orders of magnitude lower. The interannual variability of the diffusive POC flux is associated with mixed layer dynamics and underscores the importance of atmospheric forcing for POC export from the surface layer to the ocean’s interior.

Thermal radiation effects on flow past an impulsively started infinite vertical oscillating plate with uniform heat and mass flux is studied. The fluid considered here is a gray, absorbing-emitting radiation but a nonscattering medium. The dimensionless governing equations are solved using the Laplace-transform technique. The velocity, temperature and concentration are studied for different physical parameters such as the radiation parameter, phase angle, Schmidt number and time. The variation of the skin-friction for different values of the parameters is also shown in a table.

Opis:
A finite difference solution of an unsteady flow past an oscillating semi-infinite vertical place with variable temperature and uniform mass flux is presented here. The fluid considered here is a gray, absorbing-emitting radiation but a non-scattering medium. The dimensionless governing equations are solved by an efficient, more accurate, and unconditionally stable and fast converging implicit scheme. The steady state velocity, temperature and concentration profiles are shown graphically. The effect of velocity and temperature for different physical parameters such as the thermal radiation, Schmidt number, thermal Grashof number and mass Grashof number is studied. It is observed that the velocity decreases in the presence of thermal radiation. It is also observed that the time taken to reach a steady-state is more in the case of vertical plate than horizontal plate.

Stwierdzono brak analogii pól temperatury i kierunków strumieni cieplnych w stosunku do budynków ogrzewanych.
The paper presents the results of two-year studies conducted in real operating conditions of a non-insulated and unheated barn for 120 cows. As a result, it was possible to determine temperature fields in the ground beneath the floor and around the building, as well as to define heat flux directions. It was concluded that there is no analogy between temperature fields and heat flux directions with the heated buildings. In colder periods of the year, the heat accumulated in the ground is emitted to the inside of the building; in the summer, the ground absorbs the excess of heat from the building. The final conclusion was that the foundations should be insulated vertically.

Opis:
This article theoretically investigated mixed convection flow of heat generating/absorbing fluid in the presence of viscous dissipation and wall conduction effects. The flow is considered to be steady in a vertical channel with some boundary thickness. One of the plates is heated while the other is kept at ambient temperature. The governing flow equations were solved analytically using Homotopy Perturbation Method (HPM). The influences of the governing parameters were captured in graphs, tables and a table was constructed for validation of the work. It is worthwhile to stress that, both the velocity and temperature profiles decrease near the heated plate with an increase in boundary thickness (d) while the reverse cases were observed toward the cold plate. The velocity profile increases near the heated plate with increase in mixed convection parameter (Gre) and decreases towards the cold plate. Rate of heat transfer has been observed to decrease with increase in boundary plate thickness (d) while the critical value of (Gre) increases with growing boundary plate thickness. The study therefore established the importance of boundary plate thickness in mixed convection investigation.

Opis:
Generalnie to ona decyduje o poziomym i pionowym zasięgu skażenia środowiska gruntowo-wodnego węglowodorami.
Vertical filtration of hydrocarbons in soil is accompanied by horizontal dispersion of the hydrocarbons flux. It is a result of hydrodynamic processes. In the case of migration of hydrocarbons in the subsurface layer of soil, which is the result of accidental spillage of petroleum products on its surface, the role of the horizontal dispersion of pollutants is enormous. Generally, it influence the horizontal and vertical extent of hydrocarbons in soil. The author has performed laboratory measurements of the horizontal dispersion of the vertical flux of hydrocarbons for various petroleum products and for various models of soil (different granulation). The results confirm the generally known fact that the horizontal dispersion of hydrocarbons depends on the viscosity of oil products and the granulation of soil. The collected data show the magnitude of the horizontal dispersion for the cases considered in the experiment. They allow us to analyze the statistical methods.

Opis:
Finite difference solutions of the unsteady MHD flow past an impulsively started infinite vertical plate with uniform heat and mass flux are presented here, taking into account the homogeneous chemical reaction of first order. The dimensionless governing equations are solved by an efficient, more accurate, unconditionally stable and fast converging implicit scheme. The effects of velocity, temperature and concentration for different parameters such as chemical reaction parameter, Schmidt number, Prandtl number, thermal Grashof number, mass Grashof number and time are studied. It is observed that due to the presence of a first order chemical reaction, the velocity increases during the generative reaction and decreases in the destructive reaction. It is observed that the velocity decreases in the presence of the magnetic field, as compared to its absence.
