Opis:
The purpose of the present study was to track the seasonal vertical distribution of zooplankton abundance in the epipelagic zone off Sharm El-Sheikh, Red Sea. Zooplankton samples were collected seasonally within the depth ranges of 0–25, 25–50, 50–75, 75–100 m at a single station off Sharm El-Sheikh City. The present study is an attempt to expand knowledge about the structure as well as the vertical distribution of the epipelagic zooplankton community in the Gulf of Aqaba in general and in its southern part in particular. The results indicate the occurrence of 52 copepod species and several species of other planktonic groups in the study area; the zooplankton standing crop fluctuated between 1124 and 4952 organisms m−3. Copepods appeared to be the predominant component, forming an average of 86.5% of the total zooplankton count, and with other groups demonstrated a markedly different seasonal vertical distribution. Twelve bathypelagic copepod species were reported during the present study, and five species were new to the area, having migrated northwards from the main basin of the Red Sea.

Opis:
Vehicle passive suspensions consist of two major elements generating force – spring and passive damper. Both possess non-linear characteristics, which are quite often taken into account in simulations; however, the friction forces inside the hydraulic damper and the damping force’s hysteresis are usually left out. The researchers in this paper present the results of examination of the influence of using complex damper models – with friction and hysteresis; and with linear and non-linear static characteristics – on the chosen dynamic responses of a suspension system for excitations in the typical exploitation frequency range. The results from the simulation tests of the simplified and advanced versions of the damper model – different transfer functions and their relation to the reference model’s transfer functions – are compared. The main conclusion is that friction and hysteresis add extra force to the already existing damping force, acting similar to damping increase for the base static characteristics. But this increase is not linear – it is bigger for smaller frequencies than for higher frequencies. The research shows the importance of including non-linear characteristics and proposed modules in modelling passive dampers.

Opis:
The purpose of this publication is to present the construction and adaptation of the test stand intended for motorcycle simulation research. The stand is designed to study the impact of motorcycle vibrations that act on the body of the driver and passenger. Motorcycles belong to one of the types of transport that directly affects users. Excessive vibrations transmitted to the body of the driver and passenger can make driving uncomfortable and even dangerous. The vibrations of motorcycles depend mainly on the technical condition of the vehicle, the structure of the vehicle, and the construction of the engine. The stand was built on the basis of a hydraulic power supply unit, distributor, and electrohydraulic pulsators. The purpose of the construction of the stand is to examine a given group of motorcycles to learn and eliminate vibrations that occur in various areas of motorcycles and affect the comfort, health, and safety of motorcycle travelers. Test studies of the presented stand are presented in this article. The preliminary results of the simulation tests determined the possibility of testing individual elements and motorcycles on the laboratory stand.

Numerical results are presented for aerodynamic unsteady and steady airfoil characteristics of the NACA 0018 airfoil of a two-dimensional vertical-axis wind turbine. A geometrical model of the Darrieus-type wind turbine and the rotor operating parameters used for numerical simulation are taken from the literature. Airfoil characteristics are investigated using the same mesh distribution around the airfoil edges and two turbulence models: the RNG k-ε and the SST Transition. Computed results for the SST Transition model are in good agreement with the experiment, especially for static airfoil characteristics.

Opis:
Small-scale vertical-axis wind turbines can be used as a source of electricity in rural and urban environments. According to the authors’ knowledge, there are no validated simplified aerodynamic models of these wind turbines, therefore the use of more advanced techniques, such as for example the computational methods for fluid dynamics is justified. The paper contains performance analysis of the small-scale vertical-axis wind turbine with a large solidity. The averaged velocity field and the averaged static pressure distribution around the rotor have been also analyzed. All numerical results presented in this paper are obtained using the SST k- ω turbulence model. Computed power coefficients are in good agreement with the experimental results. A small change in the tip speed ratio significantly affects the velocity field. Obtained velocity fields can be further used as a base for simplified aerodynamic methods.

Local wind conditions can vary strongly depending on the landmark and vegetation, as well as on the skyline of the buildings in an urban surrounding. Weather, season and time of day influence the yield of electric power. In order to promote the use of small wind turbines as an alternative to photovoltaic power generation, design optimization for location-optimized small wind turbines was carried out. In this work, we want to concentrate on vertical axis wind turbines. Experimental studies, as well as numerical simulations, have been conducted. On the one hand, bionically optimized core structures will be integrated and implemented in the hybrid material of the turbine blades. Several optimization attempts have been examined for single blades. Detailed simulative investigations with large eddy simulations improve the aerodynamic behaviour of the new rotor design. Finally, based on the results of the studies and investigations, a new rotor will be manufactured and tested experimentally in the wind tunnel. A comparison with the reference system from the first part of the paper shows the improvements and effectiveness of the measures and processes investigated.

In the article the experimental research of the dynamics of the drives and their synchronization in the CNC two stands vertical lathe TCW 3100 have been included. This machine-tool is destined to heavy duty machining of composed crankshafts of marine engines. The doubled independent drives of the columns and also transversal beam were tested. The aim of the research was to examine power transmission system e.g. time to achieve full speed and the natural frequencies excited during start and stop phase of motion. The synchronization of the drives was analyzed by comparison the curves of acceleration vs time of the analyzed units. The results of tests confirm good dynamics properties of analyzed drives as well as correct choice of motors in relation to the displacement inertia of the units driven. The correct way of coupling drive motors and correct choice of algorithms in the control system of those motors were confirmed experimentally in this paper.

Opis:
Throughout the years, many control strategies for adjustable dampers have been proposed, designed to boost the performance characteristics of a vehicle. Comfort control strategies such as Skyhook (SH), acceleration-driven damping or power-driven damping have been tested many times using simulation models of vehicles. Those tests, however, were carried out using simplified damper models – linear or simple bilinear with symmetric characteristics. This article presents the results of examination of the influence of using more complex damper models, with friction, hysteresis and time delay of state switching implemented, on the chosen dynamic responses of a suspension system for excitations in the typical exploitation frequency range. The results of the test are compared with those found in the literature and with the results of simulations performed with a simplified version of the advanced model used. The main conclusion is that friction and hysteresis add extra force to the already existing damping force, acting like a damping increase for all analysed control strategies. The actuation delays limit the effectiveness in a sense of comfort increasing to only some frequencies. The research shows the importance of including the proposed modules in testing for both adjustable and passive dampers.

Opis:
The first baroclinic Rossby radius of deformation (R1) is a fundamental horizontal scale of mesoscale processes. This scale is important for planning both numerical modelling and study areas. R1 was computed on the basis of an 11-year series of high resolution CTD measurements collected during r/v ‘Oceania’ cruises. The data set covered the three main basins of the Baltic Proper: the Bornholm Basin (BB), the Słupsk Furrow (SF) and the Gdańsk Basin (GB). The smallest mean value of R1 was found in the Gdańsk Basin (5.2 km), the largest one in the Bornholm Deep (7.3 km). The seasonal variability of R1 is lower in the western basin than in the eastern one. The seasonal cycle of R1 may be broken by extreme events, e.g. main Baltic inflows (MBI) of saline water. The inflowing water rebuilds the vertical stratification in the southern Baltic Sea and dramatically changes the R1 values. The difference of R1 between a stagnation period and an inflow situation is shown on the basis of observations made during 2002–2003. The main inflow occurred in winter, after ten years of stagnation, and the very low values of R1 (about 4 km) changed to very high ones (more than 9 km). Analysis of stagnation and saltwater inflow events may throw light on the value of R1 in future climatic scenarios. The potential influence of climate change on Baltic Sea salinity, especially a decrease in MBI activity, may change the baroclinic Rossby radius of deformation and the mesoscale dynamics. Values of R1 are expected to be lower in the future climate than those measured nowadays.

Opis:
It can be considered that the suspension system is one of the most important systems in the VEHICLE. Where it is responsible for the stability and balance of the vehicle’s structure on the roads and curves to ensure the comfort of passengers. Also, it absorbs the shocks resulting from the unevenness of the road and prevents it from reaching the wheelhouse. The influence of the suspension constructive parameters in order to obtain the smallest level of displacements of the sprung mass has been investigated. The following control parameters are the stiffness of the sprung, unsprung mass, and the damping of the sprung mass. The parameter which affects most displacements of the sprung mass was determined by applying the analysis of variance (ANOVA). The investigation was conducted using MATLAB/SIMULINK software, and a line model of a quarter of the vehicle was created. It was determined that the stiffness of sprung has the most significant influence on the displacement of the sprung-mass, which further affect the vehicle’s comfort.
