Opis:
A k-ranking of a graph G is a colouring φ:V(G) → {1,...,k} such that any path in G with endvertices x,y fulfilling φ(x) = φ(y) contains an internal vertex z with φ(z) > φ(x). On-line ranking number $χ*_r(G)$ of a graph G is a minimum k such that G has a k-ranking constructed step by step if vertices of G are coming and coloured one by one in an arbitrary order; when colouring a vertex, only edges between already present vertices are known. Schiermeyer, Tuza and Voigt proved that $χ*_r(Pₙ) < 3log₂n$ for n ≥ 2. Here we show that $χ*_r(Pₙ) ≤ 2⎣log₂n⎦+1$. The same upper bound is obtained for $χ*_r(Cₙ)$,n ≥ 3.

Opis:
An edge ranking of a graph is a labeling of edges using positive integers such that all paths connecting two edges with the same label visit an intermediate edge with a higher label. An edge ranking of a graph is optimal if the number of labels used is minimum among all edge rankings. As the problem of finding optimal edge rankings for general graphs is NP-hard [12], it is interesting to concentrate on special classes of graphs and find optimal edge rankings for them efficiently. Apart from trees and complete graphs, little has been known about special classes of graphs for which the problem can be solved in polynomial time. In this paper, we present a polynomial-time algorithm to find an optimal edge ranking for a complete bipartite graph by using the dynamic programming strategy.

Opis:
A vertex k-ranking of a simple graph is a coloring of its vertices with k colors in such a way that each path connecting two vertices of the same color contains a vertex with a bigger color. Consider the minimum vertex ranking spanning tree (MVRST) problem where the goal is to find a spanning tree of a given graph G which has a vertex ranking using the minimal number of colors over vertex rankings of all spanning trees of G. K. Miyata et al. proved in [NP-hardness proof and an approximation algorithm for the minimum vertex ranking spanning tree problem, Discrete Appl. Math. 154 (2006) 2402-2410] that the decision problem: given a simple graph G, decide whether there exists a spanning tree T of G such that T has a vertex 4-ranking, is NP-complete. In this paper we improve this result by proving NP-hardness of finding for a given chordal graph its spanning tree having vertex 3-ranking. This bound is the best possible. On the other hand we prove that MVRST problem can be solved in linear time for proper interval graphs.

Opis:
A parity path in a vertex colouring of a graph is a path along which each colour is used an even number of times. Let χₚ(G) be the least number of colours in a proper vertex colouring of G having no parity path. It is proved that for any graph G we have the following tight bounds χ(G) ≤ χₚ(G) ≤ |V(G)|-α(G)+1, where χ(G) and α(G) are the chromatic number and the independence number of G, respectively. The bounds are improved for trees. Namely, if T is a tree with diameter diam(T) and radius rad(T), then ⌈log₂(2+diam(T))⌉ ≤ χₚ(T) ≤ 1+rad(T). Both bounds are tight. The second thread of this paper is devoted to relationships between parity vertex colourings and vertex rankings, i.e. a proper vertex colourings with the property that each path between two vertices of the same colour q contains a vertex of colour greater than q. New results on graphs critical for vertex rankings are also presented.

Opis:
We show for every k ≥ 1 that the binomial tree of order 3k has a vertex-coloring with 2k+1 colors such that every path contains some color odd number of times. This disproves a conjecture from [1] asserting that for every tree T the minimal number of colors in a such coloring of T is at least the vertex ranking number of T minus one.
