Opis:
The sources of the Christian psalmody should be searched in the Judaic tradition which influenced the formation of the original Church liturgy in Jerusalem. Psalm singing is testified by Tertulian (c. 240 A.D.) and confirmed by St. Augustine (c. 430 A.D.), who writes: we reply to the reader by singing. Since the 4th century in the Roman liturgy a form of performing a psalm with a short acclamation called a response became popular. The response accompanied the solo performance of a cantor from the Roman Schola Cantorum. In the period of the 6th–8th centuries, and especially since the 12th century the responsory form of the psalm began to disappear for the benefit of graduale (from the Latin gradus), performed on the stoop of the pulpit by a soloist who was accompanied in the repetition of responses by a group of singers, and not by the congregation. For almost 800 years the mode of this performance did not change. Only Graduale romanum published after Vaticanum II introduced a note that a response may be repeated by the congregation, which due to unusually elaborate and artistic melodies proved difficult to realize in practice. Relevant committees working on the re-introduction of the responsory psalm had to undertake the burden of making a selection of texts and adjusting the responsorium to a given liturgical period. The fruit of that work is confirmed by the post-Vaticanum II liturgical documents (The Instruction Musicam sacram; General Introduction to the Missal Lectionary; Institutio Generalis of the new Missale Romanum of 2002), where the first place is given to the responsory form of the inter-reading singing, which constitutes an integral part of the liturgy of the word and has great liturgical and pastoral importance. The liturgical tasks and functions of the indicated singing include: the meditative and dialog function, contemplative function, kerygmatic, mistagogical and formative functions. In the Roman tradition its 2 versions may be differentiated: a capite and a latere. The a capite version consisting in the repetition of the entire response and alternating it with the psalm lines became popular in the Church pastoral practice in Poland.
