The text is an attempt to look at the problem of the contemporary studies into poetic language through the prism of poststructuralist reflection. The discussion, which originally referred to the theory of literature, concerned the themes also present in the studies of linguists and resulting from a critical analysis of the assumptions of structuralist thought. The perspective adopted in this abstract made it possible to present a research proposal comprising the category of redundancy in literary communication, as well as – in more detail – the category of relationality of verse, syntactical hypotheses or special predication with regard to poetic language. Free verse is apprehended here with reference to the findings of modern scholars of verse, which involves a special way of thinking about syntax in poetry, and also – about the specific aspects of semantics. The attached examples (from a collection of modern Polish poetry) provide the necessary illustration of the linguistic phenomena demonstrated in the text.

The subject of the analysis is the poem by Czesław Miłosz from the volume To, entitled “Nad strumieniem”. The task the author embarked upon boils down to the answer to the question: how does a specific idea(its hidden mental message) develop in this poem and what results from it for the idea as well as for the poem. The proposed reading takes place at three levels. Preliminary reconnaissance is made by naive reading consisting in the reconstruction of the situation portrayed in the poem, in the recreation of that which can be fund, so to say, on the “surface” of the poem. Next, the author launches these contexts which in Miłosz’s representation of the attitude of man towards nature allow one to notice balance and harmony, coming to terms with life and wisdom, which is based on distance and silence. At the third reading level, the author refers to the image crowning opus magnum by Charles Darwin, in which a similar situation—contemplation in the open nature—leads to the formulation of the answer to the question about the sense of “fight in nature, famine and death”. This answer is juxtaposed with the ending of Czesław Miłosz’s poem: „Wydaje mi się, że słyszę głos demiurga:/ Albo nieme skały jak w pierwszym dniu stworzenia,/ albo życie, którego warunkiem jest śmierć,/ i to upajające ciebie piękno”. („It seems to me that I hear the voice of demiurge:/ Either silent rocks as on the first day of creation, / or life, whose condition is death,/ and this beauty engulfing you”).

He showed a completely new approach to the understanding of the versification system, metrics and so on. In fact, his article created a new paradigm of verse-thinking further elaborated in other books by Kulawik (e.g. Verse Theory 1995, Versification 1999). The goal of this article is to show the influence and after-effects of Kulawik’s works on the contemporary Polish verse theory.

The article discusses a variety of opinions related to the first English translation of Adam Mickiewicz’s poem Pan Tadeusz published in 1885 by Maud Ashurt Biggs (1857-1933). The main point for the author is to analyse the scope of the Polish critics’ opinions and attitudes towards this translation. Some of them were issued by well-known experts in literary translation at the time (for example Stanisław Tarnowski), as well as critics who regularly published notes on British literature and culture in Polish periodicals (Edmund Naganowski). The article points out that the translation of Pan Tadeusz triggered neither numerous, nor enthusiastic reviews; it did, however, contribute to the publication of several interesting reflections related to poetry translation.

Opis:
This article deals with the poetry of Julije Benešić (his collection Istrgnuti listovi – Torn Pages) in the context of Croatian modernist poetry based on three assumptions: the first, deductive one is that Benešić’s literary, literary-historical, theatrical and public personality is a potential metonymy of the entire Croatian culture of the first two decades of the 20th century; the second, literary-historical assumption is that the choice to use free verse can be read as a counter-modernist gesture against rationalism and structure of rhymed verse of Croatian modernist poetry; third, from the cultural-historical point of view, it is assumed that Benešić’s poetical profile is a reflection of his counter-modernist attitude that was shaped beyond the dominant poetical practices of modernism. The goal of this presentation is as much a cultural-historical as it is a literary-historical one, aimed at proving a thesis by which a small poetical contribution by Julije Benešić is synecdoche for the condition and the atmosphere of Croatian culture of the late modernism and the first interwar years. The notion of counter-modernism is historiographically restricted here and encompasses Benešić’s disputing statements in relation with the dominant paradigm in synchrony with the modernist period. The choice of free verse is understood as a statement of notion about the restraints of the poetics of rhymed verse of Croatian modernism. Since free verse was not part of the canon at the time, Benešić tried to use it to legitimize his own work and democratize the system of poetical competencies.

The article concerns textual phenomena in the poetry of Urszula Kozioł, which constitute a part of a linguistic method for examining relations between elements of poetic language. The examples discussed concern free verse – they reveal elaborate structures and linguistic processes focused on syntactic condensation, poetic accommodation, elliptic verse or phraseological trace. In the poetry of Kozioł, especially phraseology is original, which makes the receptive perspective adopted at describing linguistic phenomena representative of complicated formal-semantic processes. The draft is an attempt to read the Poet’s texts with the use of linguistic tools, so it not only gives a complete picture of an individualised poet but helps to point out peculiarities, the examination of which requires a reflection on language perception in poetic structures.

In this article we examine eighteen selected nonsense anthologies published in the UK since the 1920s, working on the assumption that they define, re-shape and visually reinterpret the genre for a general audience in parallel to scholarly approaches to nonsense. In the first part of our paper we look at the process of anthologising and its main functions, followed by an overview of key nonsense anthologies. In the second part, we inspect peritexts that influence the reception of these collections and, by extension, the perception of literary nonsense, looking specifically at book titles, cover designs, tables of contents, prefaces and postfaces. In doing so we hope to reveal the implied reader of the anthologies, comment on their coverage relative to the established Victorian canon and recognise the distinctive features of the genre, foregrounded by the anthologists’ editorial and aesthetic choices.

Opis:
The theories of free verse that Polish versologists have developed so far presuppose that a verse in a sense of an individual line in a poem is a fundamental and a tangible composition unit of a versed text, which means the reader must be able to identify when the verse begins and finishes. Yet, for the past few decades a clear tendency has been noticed in Polish poetry that blurs the clarity of versification or, what is worse, disposes of prosodic, metrical and graphic mechanisms of poetry delimitation that are well-grounded in literary tradition. It seems that the graphic layout of a poem is gaining in importance, yet many poems that follow this tendency do not comply with the criteria of the theory of free verse as an example of a graphic text. As a consequence, there are pieces of contemporary Polish poetry whose status is ambiguous as they belong neither to the category of free verse nor the prose and therefore, bearing in mind the current presupposition on verse, the free verse theories advocated by Polish scholars seem irrelevant in this particular case. This article aims at identifying the challenges these unclassifiable poems confront versologists with. Also, it attempts to point out semantic possibilities available exclusively in this grey area of versology.

This paper refers to a street art installation by Robert Gilarski, now in the Planty Park in Mikołów. The installation “schody Wojaczka”, which visualizes Rafał Wojaczek’s poem Sezon, represents the work of the poet written on the steps of a stairway. The author of this paper interpets the poem and considers the difference between the semantics of Sezon’s form as appearing in pring and the one which can be read from the street art project. She points to the influence of topography and analyses the transposition of the poem’s form into a pictorial inscription, where steps-verses play a major role. The most radical change is the one concerning the vertical reading mode, governed by the direction of upward climb on the stairs-verses. A change in expectations towards versification is not meaningless for the interpretation of the work. This reversed order of reading the poem in the installation bears signs of an artistic provocation and presents itself as a metanoia.

In the military settlements that guarded the limes, the presence of paramilitary and non-military personnel did not represent a burden, but an important part of the military economy, which in some cases even led to the emergence of a new business class. In this paper, we provide an anthology of verse inscriptions dedicated by, or to, camp followers, with a view to showcase how their everyday interactions with the army were conceptualised and verbalised, ultimately contributing to a richer picture of the limes social ecosystem.

Opis:
Throughout the centuries the Mass liturgy shaped its form of introduction and preface in the form of singing that is defined as “introit” from the Latin “introitus” (entrance) and introire (to enter), belonging to a group of proprium missae singing. Its origins should be searched in the 4th and the 5th centuries in the so-called papal station liturgies (penitent and festive), connected either with the singing of the litany to Saints (on the way to the station church), or on festive days the singing of antiphon intermingled with the lines of psalm (the liturgy of awaiting the pope in the station church), which is confirmed by Instructio ecclesiastici ordinis (Ordo Romani I). In terms of the selection of texts one may differentiate: the biblical introits (introitus regularis), where the antiphon is taken from the same psalm which is in the introit, or from the Epistle for a given day (the reading from the New Testament) and the non-biblical introits (introitus irregularis), taken from the texts of the early-Christian writers or the Apocrypha (e.g., Sedulius; the 4th Book of Ezra). In some cases their influence and significance became so strong that specific masses and even Sundays took their proper names from the first words of the text, e.g., Rorate, Gaudete, Laetare, Requiem. In modern times this type of singing is recalled by the books published following the Second Vatican Council, e.g., Graduale Romanum, Ordo Cantus Missae, and in particular, by Missale Romanum, where in Institutio Generalis it is recalled that the singing at the commencement of the Mass should be performed by a schola or a cantor interchangable with the congregation, or alternatively by a schola or the faithful, or it may be recited by the congregation, some of them or by a lector. In the music practice of the church in Poland following Vaticanum II the introits have been almost completely supplanted by the church songs, as well as by songs having nothing to do with the liturgy. While the above-mentioned rubrics of Institutio Generalis explicitly define the norms which stem from the function of the mass singing for the entrance: it is to open the liturgical action, deepen the unity of the congregation, introduce the minds into the experiencing of the mystery of the liturgical period or a celebration of a festive occasion and to accompany the procession of a priest and the entourage to the altar. That conditions specific requirements demanded of church musicians regarding the preparation and the appropriate selection of proper songs, hymns and chants, as far as they are not directly taken from the missal form in the form of an introit.

This article touches upon the tabular nature of free verse; here it indicates the individuality of verses in the text structure resulting from its non-linear character (spatiality) as a result of free verse. In other words, any text written in free verse is potentially a structure of coincidental syntax e.g. as a result of maximised equivalence each single verse is semantically independent and primarily independent with respect to syntax from the other verses. This article relies on the assumption that reception of a text written in free verse is non-linear and therefore tabular. This assumption is based on a conviction that the tabular nature is not a revelation of the new media or the change in perceiving texts propagated in the new media. Rather, it is a phenomenon typical of poetry; it started to accompany poetry when the notion of free verse was introduced. The text is illustrated with examples of poems by contemporary Polish authors.
