Opis:
. In this paper a Kriging method is reviewed and a way of its application in numerical weather prediction is proposed. The basic principles of the Kriging are shown; the main advantage is its accuracy, but at the same time a disadvantage is its large computational complexity. The construction stage of the variographical model is highlighted, as it is the most important stage and has a significant impact on the accuracy of interpolation. The algorithm for the construction of the variographical model is described. Special attention is paid to averaging an experimental variogram by introducing a special interval, called “lag”. Precisely this issue, according to the authors has a significant impact on the effectiveness of the practical application of Kriging for the interpolation of meteorological parameters. The advantages of averaging an experimental variogram by the administration of lag are presented, and the error that arises in this case is estimated. A theoretical study for the determination of the optimal lag was conducted. The lag proposed for the determination is guided by the criteria of accuracy and the economy of computer time. The twocriteria problem is solved, and the formula, which makes it possible to determine the optimal lag on these criteria, is received. An example shown here is the application of the obtained results for solving the applied task associated with meteorological parameters forecast by the COS MO model.

Opis:
The city of Algiers (Algeria) is a highly seismic area, and therefore, soil liquefaction poses a major concern for structures resting on sandy soil. A campaign of 62 static penetration tests or cone penetrometer tests (CPT) was carried out on a site located in the commune of Dar El Beïda in Algiers. The soil Liquefaction Potential Index (LPI) values were assessed, for each borehole, based on the simplified procedure of Seed and Idriss. On the other hand, the geographic information system and geostatistical analysis were used to quantify the risk of soil liquefaction at the studied site. It is worth mentioning that the (LPI) was taken as a regionalized variable. In addition, the experimental variogram was modeled on the basis of a spherical model. Also, the interpolation of the LPI values in the unsampled locations was performed by the Kriging technique using both isotropic and anisotropic models. Kriging standard deviation maps were produced for both cases. The cross-validation showed that the anisotropic model exhibited a better fit for the interpolation of the values of the soil liquefaction potential. The results obtained indicated that a significant part of the soil is liable to liquefy, in particular in the northwestern region of the study area. The findings suggest that there is a proportional relationship between the risk of liquefaction and the increase or decrease in seismic acceleration.

Opis:
In the following paper, the geostatistical analysis of qualitative parameter within a limestone deposit was presented. The parameter was content of silica dioxide. Geostatistical analysis was carried out in order to identify variability of the parameter, what significantly influenced ore exploration. Sampling data was considered with regards to descriptive statistics; logarithmical character of parameter’s distribution was indicated. After logarithmical transformation omnidirectional semivariograms were calculated due to the fact that directional anisotropy was not proven. Few theoretical models were fitted to the semivariogram, further on they were verified by means of cross-validation method. Estimation results were obtained by lognormal ordinary kriging technique. They did not confirm that models classified during cross-validation as best fit are also most reliable during estimation. It is recommended to continue research on variability of parameters within the limestone deposit, including analysis conducted by indicator kriging technique. All stages of geostatistical analysis were carried out in Isatis software.

Opis:
The population is continuously exposed to a background level of ionizing radiation due to the natural radioactivity and, in particular, with radon (222Rn). Radon gas has been classified as the second leading cause of lung cancer after tobacco smoke [1]. In the confined environment, radon concentration can reach harmful level and vary accordingly to many factors. Since the primary source of radon in dwellings is the subsurface, the risk assessment and reduction cannot disregard the identification of the local geology and the environmental predisposing factors. In this article, we propose a new methodology, based on the computation of the Gini coefficients at different spatial scales, to estimate the spatial correlation and the geographical variability of radon concentrations. This variability can be interpreted as a signature of the different subsurface geological conditions. The Gini coefficient computation is a statistical tool widely used to determine the degree of inhomogeneity of different kinds of distributions. We generated several simulated radon distributions, and the proposed tool has been validated by comparing the variograms based on the semi-variance computation with those ones based on the Gini coefficient. The Gini coefficient variogram is shown to be a good estimator of the inhomogeneity degree of radon concentration. Indeed, it allows to better constrain the critical distance below which the radon geological source can be considered as uniform at least for the investigated length scales of variability; it also better discriminates the fluctuations due to the environmental predisposing factors from those ones due to the random spatially uncorrelated noise.

The groundwater physico-chemical parameters of Parts of Akwa Ibom state and their spatial distribution have been examined in this study. The physico-chemical parameters analysed are Ph, total dissolved solids, electrical conductivity and water hardness. The average pH, electrical conductivity, water hardness and total dissolved solids obtained are 6.4, 163.4242 μS/cm, 83.81 mg/l and 90.5 mg/l respectively. The computed values are within the permissible limit set by World Health Organisation (WHO). Semi-variogram and ordinary kriging were used for the spatial distribution analysis. The semi variogram of the pH, total dissolved solids, electrical conductivity and water hardness were model with Gaussian, spherical, linear functions respectively. The pH map is dominated with values ranging from 6.2 to 6.6 while the total dissolved solids map is associated mainly with values ranging from 90 to 95 mg/l. The water hardness and electrical conductivity values increases from central part toward the west and eastern regions. The geostatical modelling has been used to estimate the values of the parameters at unsampled points.

Opis:
The paper presents a surface model of the accounting costs of electricity transmission over the 220 kV and 400 kV networks. A structural analysis of marginal costs variation was carried out. Variogram functions (isotropic, directional variogram, variograms roses) were used to build the model. The model describes well the considered phenomenon, i.e. the area and time variation of marginal costs, and has great potential in the electrical power sector, especially in the context of the development of market mechanisms in electric energy trading. The model has made it possible to observe the existing tendencies in cost (directional and time) variation, which is useful for setting electricity transmission tariffs correctly stimulating the behaviour of the electric power network users – the electricity suppliers and consumers.

Opis:
The paper presents a selection of a semivariogram model in the study of spatial variability of soil moisture in a loess agricultural catchment. Soil moisture tests were carried out in the Moszenki village, 15 km northwest of Lublin. Soil moisture measurements were performed at two dates at 104 points, located on a rectangular surface measuring 700 × 1200 m. These points were laid out in the corners of a grid of squares with sides 100 m. In addition, 6 measurements were made at a distance of less than 100 m from the nearest points. Soil moisture was measured in the soil surface (0–5 cm). ArcGis software with Geostatistical Analyst extension was used for modelling semivariograms. In both terms, five models of semivariograms were used: stable, circular, spherical, exponential and Gaussian. Kriging was used for the estimation of soil moisture values. Among the semivariogram models analyzed in this study, the largest errors in the determined values of soil moisture relative to the empirical data were observed for the exponential model, and the smallest for the Gaussian model. However, it should be emphasized that the values of the analysed errors for the individual semivariogram models were similar. Application of the ordinary kriging method for interpolation of spatial distribution of soil moisture yields good results, but it has to be kept in mind that the final shape of the spatial distribution is influenced by the choice of the semivariance function model.
Wilgotność mierzono w powierzchniowej warstwie gleby (0–5 cm). Do modelowania semiwariogramów wykorzystano program ArcGis z rozszerzeniem Geostatistical Analyst. W obu terminach do analiz wykorzystano pięć modeli semiwariogramów: stały, kołowy, sferyczny, wykładniczy, Gaussa. Do estymowania wartości wilgotności na analizowanym obszarze wykorzystano kryging zwyczajny. Spośród analizowanych modeli semiwariogramów największe błędy wyznaczonych wartości wilgotności gleby w stosunku do danych empirycznych zanotowano dla modelu wykładniczego, natomiast najmniejsze dla modelu Gaussa. Wykorzystanie krygingu zwykłego do interpolacji rozkładu przestrzennego wilgotności gleb daje dobre rezultaty, jednak na efekt końcowy rozkładu przestrzennego wpływ miał dobór modelu funkcji semiwariancji.

Opis:
Fitting a theoretical model to an experimental variogram is an important issue in geostatistical studies because if the variogram model parameters are tainted with uncertainty, the latter will spread in the results of estimations and simulations. Although the most popular fitting method is fitting by eye, in some cases use is made of the automatic fitting method on the basis of putting together the geostatistical principles and optimization techniques to: 1) provide a basic model to improve fitting by eye, 2) fit a model to a large number of experimental variograms in a short time, and 3) incorporate the variogram related uncertainty in the model fitting. Effort has been made in this paper to improve the quality of the fitted model by improving the popular objective function (weighted least squares) in the automatic fitting. Also, since the variogram model function (£) and number of structures (m) too affect the model quality, a program has been provided in the MATLAB software that can present optimum nested variogram models using the simulated annealing method. Finally, to select the most desirable model from among the single/multi-structured fitted models, use has been made of the cross-validation method, and the best model has been introduced to the user as the output. In order to check the capability of the proposed objective function and the procedure, 3 case studies have been presented.
W celu zbadania możliwości stosowania proponowanej funkcji celu i przedstawionej procedury, zaprezentowano trzy studia przypadku.
