Opis:
The aim of this text is to present the process whereby Zygmunt Noskowski grew closer to the music of Chopin, which he initially treated with considerable distance. In the first part of the article, the author analyses verbal testimony of Noskowski’s Chopin reception on the basis of extant columns written by him. Noskowski’s attention first focused on Chopin towards the end of the 1880s, the catalyst being the Chopin anniversaries celebrated in 1894 and 1899, for the purposes of which Noskowski arranged piano compositions by Chopin for orchestra and voice. The picture of Chopin sketched by Noskowski in his press writings contained Classicist components in which his sense of form and his affinities with the work of Bach were underlined; on the other hand, Noskowski stressed in Chopin’s music - as a specifically Polish characteristic - its links with nature. Both these factors influenced the shape of Noskowski’s own music. In the second part of the article, the author shows Chopin’s influence on Noskowski’s compositions, which initially found expression through the intermediary of the dramatic aspects of the Second Symphony of Ignacy Feliks Dobrzyński, and then in episodic links between Noskowski’s symphonic poem Step [The steppe] and Chopin’s Rondo ä la krakowiak, Op. 14. The climactic point of Noskowski’s dialogue with Chopin is defined by his programmatic-patriotic orchestral work Z życia... [narodu] [From the life... [of the nation]], in which Chopin’s Prelude in A major from opus 28 served as the basis for a set of variations; this work, despite a number of inconsistencies, is regarded by the author as an important work, both in its from and in its culturalhistorical significance.

Opis:
The article explains how ideas, characters and images borrowed from literary works and of fine arts are represented in Liszt’s the piano works of (i.e. with the help of motives, themes and narrative strategies). I. The first level of analysis concerns the typology of basic elements in the new lisztian forms: A. Four types of musical motives or figures and their signifieds (semes). B. Sixteen types of musical themes with their signifieds (classemes). C. Considering the great parts or sections of a piece we discovered seven types with their signifieds (isotopies). II. The second level of analysis consists in the presentation of three types of narrative strategies. The narrative strategy would mean the conscious organization of concatenation of the above mentioned signifying elements. A. The “figurative strategy” refers to the formal variation [‘Formalvariation” in German] of onetheme, or of one “thematic complex” (theme introduced and followed by expressive describing motives or refrain), for example: Sposalizio. B. The “simple narrative strategy” consists in a succession of character variations [‘Charaktervariation’], i.e. variation in the musical genre, in the signified of one musical theme (for example: Vallee d’Obermanri). C. The “complex narrative strategy” describes the structures which combine sonata form, cyclical sonata in four movements and variation form. This strategy implies that a whole thematic complex (exposition) is submitted to different stages of the character variation (for example: Dante sonata, Sonata in B minor, 2nd Ballade in B minor, etc.).

Opis:
A previously unreported large skull of the mastodonsaurid temnospondyl Xenotosuchus africanus, from the Cynognathus Assemblage Zone (Early to Middle Triassic) of the Beaufort Group, Karoo Basin of South Africa, is described. The species is plesiomorphic in most aspects of its cranial anatomy, and only one autapomorphy is tentatively identified herein, namely contact between the left and right exoccipitals posterior to the parasphenoid. The new specimen permits recognition of a growth series for X. africanus from sub−adult (all previously known specimens) to fully adult (new specimen) stages. Ontogenetic changes associated with this include changes in skull proportions, and changes in the morphology of the lacrimal flexure, frontal, postfrontal, cultriform process and body of the parasphenoid, and the transvomerine tooth row.

Opis:
The article is devoted to the study of metric-rhythmic structure and form of folk song stanza as stabilizers of variant folk tradition. Moreover, the stabilization mechanism is a system of variability factors and stabilization. They operate in relation to all components of a communication system, which ensures the functioning of folklore. The essence of extra-textual, textual-verbal and musical stabilizers of the folk song tradition is revealed. The folk song exists in its variants. It has its own logic of development and form shaping, which should be reflected in the recording. The author uses numerous examples to analyze various forms of stanza, as well as their metric and rhythmic structure. She also studies one of the invariant principles of folk songs language i.e. unity of form of music and verse. Rhythmic form of the song (its syllabic-rhythmic model) is expressed in categories that reconcile the rhythm of a verse with a chant.
