    First of all, I would like to highlight the fact that discussion about the system and mechanisms of self-development of young researchers in the post-doctoral phase in Poland has only just begun. The problem became very serious when we started to implement the guidelines of the Strategy of Bologna, which means introducing three educational stages: Bachelor’s degree (after 3 years spent at the university), Master’s degree (after next two years), and Doctorate degree (four years).

    Although each of us is unique there is no one who could not be substituted. We can usually agree with this statement although sometimes we accept that there are exceptional individuals, though it is regretful that we do not encounter them frequently. There are people whose contribution to the life of a social group or an institution is diffi cult to replace. They integrate the group, motivate the group’s members to work better, offer a good example, willingly advise and help others, represent the ambitions of the group well, and so on. In the Poznań circle of political scientists Professor Czesław Mojsiewicz was such a fi gure. He had a tremendous infl uence on the profi le of this circle over the forty-two years of its active creation and shaping.

    The victory of Chinese communists over the Kuomintang, backed by the United States, in the Chinese Civil War, which resulted in the foundation of the People’s Republic of China on October 1, 1949, was the most signifi cant international event a er the Second World War. It reverberated not only through the whole world, but also around Poland. The People’s Republic of Poland broke diplomatic relations with the Kuomintang government of the Republic of China in August 1949. It was the seventh country of the world to recognize the People’s Republic of China on October 5, 1949, and, two days later, Poland and China reestablished diplomatic relations. It is worth mentioning that this fact was generally well received by the Polish society of the 1950s.

    Warunki opadowe w Polsce są czynnikiem ograniczającym systematyczne uzyskiwanie w uprawach polowych dużych plonów koniczyny łąkowej (Trifolium pratense L.) i lucerny mieszańcowej (Medicago sativa L. x varia T. Martyn) (ok. 10 t s.m.·ha-¹). Oszacowano intensywność występujących niedoborów wodnych dla tych roślin w różnych regionach kraju. Stwierdzono ich dużą zmienność czasową i przestrzenną. Potencjalne niedobory wodne dla koniczyny łąkowej i lucerny mieszańcowej w centralnej Polsce na glebach brunatnych lub płowych lekkich, wytworzonych z glin, raz na pięć lat mogą osiągnąć 160-200 mm. Plonowanie lucerny w Wielkopolsce na tych samych glebach mogą ograniczać niedobory, sięgające nawet 200-240 mm. Przedstawione wyniki uzyskano, stosując do przetwarzania danych meteorologicznych i glebowych model CROPDEF.
    Precipitation in Poland is a factor limiting stable high yields of red clover and alfalfa (about 10 t of dry matter per ha). In the paper the estimated water deficits for those plants are presented in different regions of the country. The spatial distribution of water deficits is determined. The potential water deficits for red clover and alfalfa in central Poland on haplic luvisols developed from loams can reach 160-200 mm once a five years. In Wielkopolska region the water deficits for alfalfa can even reach 200-240 mm on the same soils. The results shown in the paper were obtained with the computer software CROPDEF for calculating water deficits and with available computer technique for cartographic presentation.

    In the academic year 1983/1984, the students of the second year of history of the Catholic University came up with an idea of establishing their own journal titled „Varia”. Its main initiators were Miroslaw Filipowicz and Adam Hlebowicz; later Wojciech Zajączkowski joined them. The magazine was duplicated in the Department of Canon Law of the Catholic University of Lublin, where Filipowicz was assigned to be on duty. The magazine circulation was approx. 30 copies and it was distributed among the students of the second year, student hostel residents and regulars of the reading room of History at  the Catholic University. As estimated by one of the creators of the magazine, it was a group of about fifty people. The journal was not intended to criticize the then authorities as the Security Service took interest in them. The creators of the magazine were checked, but finally the operational activities were discontinued.

    This compilation is based on the original report on a clinical survey conducted in Brussels (1905-1906) by Josephine Joteyko and Varia Kipiani with 43 vegetarians. Having advanced expertise in physiology and experimentalism, Joteyko (with Lithuanian and Polish origins) and Kipiani (with Georgian origins) discussed their findings at the Congress of the Belgian Society for Vegetarianism in 1906. For both children and adults, females and males, regardless of age, the findings demonstrated vegetarian dietary habits to be beneficiary for human development, the subjects’ physical and mental health, welfare, and physical and intellectual efficiency. Surprisingly, Joteyko and Kipiani confirmed C. Darwin’s observation across various nutritional cultures that vegetarian food would increase the energetic balance of the human body. Additionally, their focus on the moteur humain shows affinities with Taylorism, the modernist utopias of labor, the enhancement of human faculties, the protection of workers and their rights from automation, and applied social science represented by Joteyko and Kipiani as multidisciplinary investigators.
