Opis:
The article collects a number of recent (and not-so-recent) arguments together against the common Polish usage of the term “anti-utopia” as synonymous with “dystopia” or, more often, as a name for a specifically defined genre which introduction requires producing confusing differentiations based on the degree of satire, criticism, or the lack of thereof in the fantastic extrapolation. The main thesis of the text comes from an observation that such scholarship seems to neglect a widely acknowledged discrepancy between utopia as a narrative or a world and utopianism as a transformative idea - which results in erroneous genological attribution of works famous inasmuch as George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four. To support the thesis, the article follows up with a series of etymological, philological, philosophical, and logical arguments in favour of using a term “dystopia” to denote any kind of narrative or world that deconstructs eutopian idealism, and reserving the predicate “anti-utopian” for a sociological critique of failed transformative efforts in society and philosophy.

Opis:
Utopian consciousness is defined as an expression of opposition against actual status quo with simultaneous tendency towards creating alternative projects guarantying possibilities which are not found in actual reality. Utopias usually are recognized as negative concepts. They may often glare with simple and artificial examples or faith their believers in realization of imagined world. Utopists are often called dreamers and people who try to implement unreal ideas into life. Although it can not be forgotten that there is a meaningful difference between abstract utopia and concrete one. In concrete utopia all wishful thinking is changed by seeking real historical alternatives in the boundaries of existed social, political and economical possibilities. If the history of social thought improves that utopias include inspiring force, expose weaknesses of actual order, criticize status quo it should be asked if the idea of sustainable development does not include some elements of utopian thought.

Opis:
This contribution is an attempt at a different reading of Wojciech Gutkowski’s Journey to Kalopeia (1817), which may be of interest to both Polish and Australian readers in the twenty-first century, since it tries to connect Polish history with the dream of the Antipodes represented by Australia. Gutkowski’s book, unknown until 1913, when it was deemed a utopian novel of little scientific value, gained recognition in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. At that time it was studied as a political treatise and an Enlightenment model for the creation of an ideal utopian-socialist-communist state. This paper offers a new reading of the work in question, discussing its cultural-historical aspects as a precursor of a specifically Polish model of a utopian-colonial state.

The Motif of Nature in Early Russian Soviet Utopian and Dystopian Novels

Opis:
In this paper the most important works of Russian-Soviet literary utopia and dystopia have been analysed to investigate the role of nature. In literary utopias, people and their needs are the measure of all things, and the image of a utopian future is the vision of a nature so subdued that the need to eat and sleep have been subdued as well. Yet authors, such as Chayanov, emphasise the importance of a coexistence with nature. Dystopian authors ( Platonov and Zamyatin ) see the meaning of nature symbolically. They see nature not only as an unconquerable force, but also as a force entirely impermissible to defeat and that should not be defeated: for Platonov and Zamyatin nature is the eternal source of all that is to come.

Opis:
Croatian speculative fiction in the last quarter of the century has been dominated by the city of Zagreb. There are three anthologies depicting the capital of Croatia and visions of its future: Zagreb 2004 (1995), Zagreb 2014 (1998) and Zagreb 2094 (2004). Also, in Croatian dystopian fiction, the popularity of which has grown rapidly since 2010, the city becomes a metaphor for the problem of exclusion and deep inequalities between the centre and the periphery. The changes in the literary image of Zagreb over the last twenty-five years illustrate not only the changing perception of an urban space and different ways of experiencing the city by writers, but also depict the evolution of speculative fiction in Croatia by distinguishing its most important elements: the growth of the importance of local motifs and places, as well as blurring the rigid genre boundaries and the evolution towards the so-called slipstream fiction. Thanks to the analysis of literary images of Zagreb, questions about the attitude of fantasy literature of that time towards the main contemporary issues can be raised. The article finally offers a possibility to define either the subversive or conciliatory character of fantasy works in the context of the most dominant ideologies of that time.

Opis:
The article aims at presenting some of the functions of the "utopian business" motif represented by the Cheeryble Brothers in Nicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens, as well as indicating some of the ways in which the utopian dimension is achieved. Shown in comparison with other Dickensian companies, the Cheeryble Brothers seems unique. The uniqueness lies in the fact that in the majority of cases the firms are destructive forces in the novels whereas employment in the brothers’ company equals the highest happiness possible. The firm is an ideal, almost symbiotic merger of private and business lives of the characters, moving it to the realm of utopia. The functions of the "utopian business" motif are numerous. The company is seen as the centre of goodness in the novel and the antithesis of evil represented by Ralph Nickleby and Squeers. The motif ends the picaresque element in the novel by providing the main character with proper financial stability which in turn enables him to support his family and seek for emotional stability. At the same time it reinforces the fairy-tale convention in the novel where the brothers, through their helpful attitude, act as good uncles of other characters. From a different perspective, the "utopian business" motif is used to advocate the idea of self-help and charity thus indicating the cultural model of the world based on the Christian in a general sense, and Puritan in a narrower sense, ethics.

Ethics — evolution — utopia. Remarks on John Harris’ Enhancing evolution: The paper is divided into two parts. The first part justifies the thesis that the project of enhancing evolution presented by Harris, consisting in replacing natural selection with deliberate selection, is based on misunderstanding of the scientifically defined theory of evolution. In the second part, it is shown that Harris’ argument may serve as a classic example of a utopian discourse in which a pseudoscientific narrative is mixed with a quasi-religious belief.

The tittle shouldn’t be understood literally as it’s just necessary simplifi cation. Th e main aim of this article is to consider the city as socio-spatial environment for human beings. This environment creates better or worse possibilities for implementation of the idea of fairness. Key elements are here: space arrangements, organization of social life and governance. Th rough the ages we witness not only the process of seeking for the formula of fair city but also practical attempts to implement this concept. First part of this paper is aiming to capture characteristics of the fair city. Next the examples of the fair city idea in social thought are being reviewed so at the end the modern determinants and possibilities to develop this concept in practice could be presented.

The main theme of my article is the relationship between virtual worlds of video games and the concept of utopia. I aim to present a wide variety of different definitions and theories of utopia, which seem indispensable in order to further the relationship between video game and virtual reality research and the multitude of utopian studies discourses. The thesis starts with a short recollection of Alexander Galloway’s thesis on video games and utopias from his article on World of Warcraft which I am trying to supplement with some of the most interesting contemporary utopian studies research. The core of the article focuses on sketching an alternative proposal which includes a variety of definitions of utopia and utopianism. My aim is to introduce precise and useful notions which could be further utilized in game analysis and game research.
