Opis:
The present study explores how 12- and 15-year-old immersion students (n=75 and n=73) produce subordinate questions in Swedish on a written test. Previous studies are sparse, but they report difficulties with both subject-verb word order and use of the subjunctor om and the subject marker som occurring in these clauses; informants with varying ages and competence levels struggle with similar problems. However, the acquisition order between these two types of constructions, a central theme in this study, has gained less attention. Analyses of the actual data show significant differences with varying effect sizes in accuracy between the different subcategories of subordinate questions and both informant groups. Insertion of grammatical words was mastered by significantly fewer informants than word order. Also, effect sizes were large in these contexts. Older informants do better than the younger ones, but the differences are not always statistically significant, as certain constructions are already mastered at a high level by the younger informants, whereas other constructions are still difficult for the older ones.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to present a usage-based theory of second language acquisition (SLA) which might serve as a framework for explaining the learning mechanisms that are operating when students are exposed to the meaningfully-motivated Cognitive Grammar-based teaching materials. Currently, two seemingly quite different stands of Cognitive Grammar (CG) applications are advocated: one focusing on the use of meaningfully-motivated linguistic explanations and the other on the usage-based nature of language. The article outlines a unified psycholinguistic theory, inspired by Brian MacWhinney’s Competition Model and developed by Nick C. Ellis, which is compatible with both the meaning-based and the usage-based conceptions of language assumed by CG, and which can provide a more fine-grained frame of reference for introducing Cognitive Grammar into the teaching practice. Finally, some suggestions are made concerning practical application of CG-inspired pedagogical rules that should enhance the effectiveness of meaningfully motivated grammatical instruction.

Opis:
Aiming to illustrate how the relationship between the language system and its actualisations in usage is envisaged in contemporary linguistic models that draw from and modify de Saussure’s idea of langue and parole, the paper presents the vision of this relationship in Construction Grammar (a model developed in various variants by C.J. Fillmore, A. Goldberg, P. Kay, M. Fried and others), belonging to the widelyunderstood cognitive trend in linguistics. The focus is on the distinction between the concept of construction, a conventionalised pairing of form and meaning/function, being an element of the system, and the concept of construct, a real utterance used in communication, being an actualisation of many constructions. Construction Grammar is a usage-based model, assuming that language system generalisations emerge from frequent usage. Therefore, the article also discusses the phenomenon of coercion, i.e. “stretching” constructions to combine with “unfitting” lexemes, seen not as a breach of the system but as one of the mechanisms of its creative use to construct new meanings, which may lead to changes in constructions, to the emergence of new ones, and hence to the modification of the system.
