The aim of this paper is to characterize the relation between the urban  landscape (the image of the city) and the subject. The landscape is understood here in two ways: as something alien, excluding, and hostile, but also as something that gains new features when in contact with the Other. For it can be said, paraphrasing Siegfried Lenz’s famous statement on the relation between man and landscape, that the city is being created through us. The relationship between the residents and the urban landscape has a reciprocal character, in which “I” places itself in relation to a certain “you.”

Urban growth is currently at the heart of multiple studies, as towns and cities face various challenges of economic, social and spatial nature. Consequently new research trends and theories emerge in urban economics. They are pinpointed and briefly described in the paper. As a result the authors focus on possible implications of the contemporary theoretical findings to education in Spatial Economics and Economics. A brief description of the study curriculum is proposed to ignite discussion over the needed content shift in university education related to urban economics.

This paper focuses on an African street experienced as profoundly contradictory. It departs from Adeline Masquelier`s observation that this landscape is an object of both fascination and terror, and a space of both fear and desire. The street offers jobs, goods and economic opportunities, but it can also lead to isolation, marginalization and fatalities. The paper is based on field research undertook in Omdurman in 2013 and granted by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

Attention is drawn to the fact that nowadays urbanization is one of the most important trends of modern society development and its consequences should not be underestimated. It is emphasized that the research and forecast of the urbanization processes requires new approaches, which are, in particular, offered by the modern interdisciplinary area of political studies – political urban studies. The need for conceptualizing this new area of political science is substantiated. According to the author, the subjects of political urban studies are: a modern city in the globalized world; a person in the modern metropolis; features of the urban culture formation in the modern society; quality of the urban environment and the political ways of improving it; conflict and risk factors of the modern city’s development; urban political regimes; municipal electoral processes and the forms of urban population’s political activity; socio-political technologies in the city; modern city marketing; analysis of the urban communities as primary subjects of local government; city as the space of socio-political communication etc. Author focuses on the following issues of political urban studies: what is the modern city like (and what it should be like)? Who determines the development of cities nowadays and how to make this process for efficient and transparent? What are the factors that determine the daily life of a city with its historical heritage, which includes layers of different eras nowadays? Where the hidden potential of the city can be found and how to make the city valuable for its residents, as well as recognizable to the international community (branding)? How to organize communication and cooperation between different socio-political actors who are active in the city? Attention is drawn to the issue of cities, urbanonyms and toponyms renaming in the context of implementation of the Law of Ukraine “On the condemnation of communist and national-socialist (Nazi) totalitarian regimes in Ukraine and the prohibition of propaganda of their symbols”. The heuristic potential of political urban studies is illustrated on the example of grouping the administrative structure into government clusters. Functional differences of elements of urban landscape in different historical periods are determined. It is emphasized that modern representative architecture should be directed to the widest social inclusion, provision of new opportunities for interaction of population as well as interaction between «government - society». It is underlined that there is a tendency of uniting within a single building (block) of the highest possible number of state or local governmental authorities for optimization of the management process in view on the inclusion of architecture (so-called governmental clusters). The foreign experience of the cluster approach usage is analysed. The main formats of its application are: 1) separation of governmental cluster in structure of «old» capital, usually by having government buildings outside the historic centre or on the outskirts; 2) transposing the capital to the newly built administrative-territorial units. European experience of governmental clusters organization on the example of successful West-European projects ‒ the government blocks in Oslo and Berlin, as well as the complex of governmental buildings Lombardy in Milan is researched. Practices of Asian cities, including Sejong in South Korea, Putrajaya in Malaysia, Chandigarh in India is studied. Attention is also paid to several projects in the former Soviet Union, including: Astana in Kazakhstan and plans to construct a new Parliamentary Centre in North West Administrative District (Mnevnikovskay plain) in Moscow. It is emphasized that intention of architectural planning is not only compact grouping of administrative buildings, but also the idea of power decentralization (Georgia). The problem of the governmental block transfer from the historical part of Kyiv is also analysed. The cluster approach is defined as the best way of organizing big cities space, especially capitals.

After the fall of the communist system, cities of Central and Eastern Europe have undergone complex transformation resulting from such processes as democratization, marketization or globalization. Collapse of the communist regime not only was a turning point in political context, but it also introduced changes and initiated processes which have significantly influenced architecture and urban planning as well as the way of thinking about a city in broader social and cultural context. Although it is a quarter of a century, the process of re-defining and formulating a new urban identity initiated at that time has been still taking place. Lodz is a very interesting example of a post-communist and post-industrial city, where current identity discourse is strongly associated with revitalisation projects.The authors represent two fields of humanities: art history and cultural anthropology. The aim of joint research is to carry out analysis that will help answer the question of how a new Lodz identity is created and how a city identity is managed within the scope of planned and already undertaken revitalisation actions.

The text is a comprehensive and contextual discussion on Alina Mosak’s book entitled Żydowska Warszawa – żydowski Berlin. Literacki portret miasta w pierwszej połowie XX wieku. It attempts to place the book in the context of both widely understood Jewish studies and urban studies. The text also discusses the book in reference to the author’s previous works and activities, directly related to the caesura of the Shoah and to Central Europe as a place of specific urban phenomena. Finally, after Alina Molisak, it reminds of rich literature documenting the pre-Shoah life of both capitals, seen from different perspectives.
Tekst jest obszernym, kontekstowym omówieniem książki Aliny Molisak Żydowska Warszawa – żydowski Berlin. Literacki portret miasta w pierwszej połowie XX wieku. To próba usytuowania monografii zarówno w kontekście szeroko rozumianych studiów żydowskich, jak i studiów miejskich. To także omówienie w relacji do dotychczasowych dzieł i działań autorki, ściśle związanych z cezurą Zagłady i z Europą Środkową jako miejscem istnienia specyficznych miejskich fenomenów. Wreszcie przypomnienie – za Aliną Molisak – bogatej literatury dokumentującej przedzagładowe życie obydwu stolic: niemieckiej i polskiej, widziane z różnych perspektyw.

The topic of this paper is to present the influence of the economic system transformation on the housing environment. Determiners of the development of housing architecture and environment belong to four general groups: architectural, town-planning, economic and legal as well as social and cultural. They are all connected, they enter various relationships and the degree of their influence on changes in architecture is differentiated. Some of them are very important determinants for the field of housing environment and these are connected with history and culture. Some others stimulate progress in the processes in architecture. Still others hamper the progress and slow down the changes. During 20 years of the process of transformation in Poland the built environment has changed and now it offers a new quality and more than before facilities to the inhabitants.

Artykuł opisuje zjawisko transformowania przestrzeni miejskiej w Łodzi poprzez graffiti i napisy pojawiające się na murach miasta. Analizowane są tylko te typy graffiti stanowiące formę manifestu bądź komunikatu, który przeciętny mieszkaniec miasta może odczytać i zrozumieć. Z pozoru banalna kompozycja napisów na ścianach faktycznie w dużym stopniu wpływa na znaczenie przestrzeni, w której się pojawiają. Poprzez analizę warstwy tekstualnej, graficznej oraz kontekstu występowania graffiti autor stara się odczytać, w jaki sposób wpływają one na przestrzeń miejską w Łodzi i ją transformują. Materiał do przeprowadzonego badania stanowi obszerna dokumentacja fotograficzna zebrana w 2006 i 2008 r., w dużej części łódzkiego Śródmieścia oraz wybranych blokowiskach znajdujących się na obrzeżach miasta.
The article describes the phenomenon of urban space in Lodz being transformed by graffiti and wall-writings. The graffiti samples selected for analysis may be described as conveying a message that is easily understood by every local. This seemingly meaningless composition of wall-writings is highly influential in fact and transforms the surrounding city space. The author, by analysing the content of the graffiti, its graphical form and space context in which it appears, explores the way in which graffiti transforms urban space in the city of Lodz. The subject of the research is photographic documentation made in 2006 and 2008 in the city centre and some of the residential areas situated on the outskirts of the city.

W artykule omówiona została oryginalna koncepcję gatunków miejskich jako form tekstualizacji doświadczenia przestrzeni urbanistycznej, zaproponowana przez Katarzynę Szalewską w książce Urbanalia – miasto i jego teksty. Humanistyczne studia miejskie (Gdańsk 2017). Wprowadzona przez badaczkę kategoria „urbanaliów” służy opisaniu miejskiego pejzażu genologicznego, na który składają się zarówno wypowiedzi językowe, jak i pozawerbalne. Szalewska zredefiniowała gatunki mowy miejskiej, takie jak pasaż, anegdota, plotka, spacerownik, legenda miejska, faits divers, obrazek, fizjologia czy tableaux, uzupełniając tym samym literaturoznawczą propozycję metodologiczną w ramach studiów miejskich. Opisane przez nią formy artykulacji doświadczenia przestrzeni miejskiej mają zarówno charakter wysokoartystyczny, jak też folklorystyczny.
The article discusses the idea of urban genres as forms of textualization of urban spaces, as proposed by Katarzyna Szalewska in her book Urbanalia — miasto i jego teksty: Humanistyczne studia miejskie (Gdańsk 2017). The proposed category of ‘urbanalia’ describes the urban genological landscape that comprises verbal and non-verbal utterances. Szalewska redefines such urban genres as passage, anecdote, spacerownik, urban legend, faits divers, picture, physiology, and tableaux, thus completing the urban studies with the literary methodology. In addition, the forms described by the author are characterized by high artistic and folkloristic qualities.

Podróż po mapie pamięci to opowieść o historii kamiennej rzeźby Matki Boskiej z Dzieciątkiem ufundowanej przez rodzinę lokalnych mieszkańców dla dzielnicy Piasek w latach 60 XIX wieku. Pełne niespodziewanych zmian dzieje rzeźby odzwierciedlają przemiany i przekształcenia budowlane tego historycznego obszaru. Przeniesienie statuy w 2015 do innego rejonu miasta przyniosło bolesną stratę na mapie lokalnej pamięci.
The travel throughout the map of memory presents history of the stone statue of Mary and the Child which was founded by the local family for the Piasek district of Krakow in the 1860’s. The turbulent history of this artefact reflects alterations and development of the historical area. Once it has been transferred to another district of the city in 2015, its lack brings about serious loss at the map of local memory.
