Opis:
One of the most predictable implications of photography consists of the ability to fix some images returning them in a variable timeframe for the observation. In all the major world cities, it is common to incur in some book where recent photos are compared to old ones searching the same point of view in order to make the comparison more accurate and stimulate the critical ability of the observer. An exercise that sometimes stimulates a sort of regret for the past, pointing out a diffused excess of nostalgia for times gone by. Nevertheless, the reality and meaning of modern city images are not always so prosaic. What happens when photographs are evocative of a reality that is completely lost in the collective imaginary even though it still exists and functions, despite being forgotten and buried in the depths of the city? This is the case of very few pictures capable of telling the story of a city, Milan, and its only “real” river, the Olona, whose waters, humiliated and rejected, continue to flow in total amnesia. It is a different story when photography does not have the role of nourishing nostalgia, but the power to make visible and explain the variation of a presence and its progressive obliteration. Some pictures testify to the passage from the bucolic amenity of the river and its banks in a pre-urban context to a muscular urban infrastructure. A rigid channelized river, shown with confidence, is trying to keep its presence, until the moment of its inevitable decline and disappearance. It is in these images that the possibility of reconsidering the Olona as a part of the new project for the city lies.

Anthropopressure is considered as one of the most important causes of disorder of natural water relations in the environment and impoverishment of the landscape. This is particularly evident in urban areas, where the degree of builtup areas and participation of impervious surfaces are still increasing. The result of such processes are extreme phenomena – more frequent droughts and floods. One way to keep a good state of water resources in urban catchments is creating retention and infiltration of rainwater. The paper presents examples of sustainable rainwater management that determine change of the face of the city and increase its friendliness towards the environment.

This paper investigates the themes of walking and wandering in Paul Leppin’s novel Severins Gang in die Finsternis by analysing their occurrence and aesthetic connotation. The act of walking and the exploration of urban landscape are strongly present in the novel, which is set in Prague and is characterised by several depictions of the milieu; therefore, the text has been analysed from this angle in numerous previous studies, mainly mentioning the elements of flanerie appearing in the narration. The present study discusses the problematic aspects in defining the protagonist of the novel as flaneur, suggesting alternative interpretations that can describe the aesthetic experience of Severin’s walking more exhaustively. The analysis mainly follows Francesco Careri’s research on the aesthetics of walking, which are summarized in his work Walkscapes. Walking as Aesthetic Practice. Following the same methodological approach, the paper also analyses occurrences of the act of walking other than Severin’s walkabouts, focusing especially on the presence of processions throughout the text.

Opis:
As the aesthetic of the Polish cities became a topic of wider discussions, it is important to detect the potential role of human-place relations. Two studies (N = 185 & N = 196) were conducted to explore the relationship between place attachment, place identity and appraisal of urban landscape. Satisfaction with urban aesthetic was predicted by two dimensions of place attachment (place inherited and place discovered), local identity (on the trend level) and national-conservative identity. Place discovered and European identity were also predictors of visual pollution sensitivity. Place discovered is considered as more active type of attachment that permits both a positive bias concerning the aesthetics of one’s city, and a stronger criticism of the elements that can potentially violate the place’s landscape.

The author argues that it is not possible, especially in an urbanized landscape, to trace any clear dividing lines between natural structures and processes and those caused by the human. Simplifying things to the extreme, we assume that “wildlife” includes those organisms which live permanently (or are capable of living) in a given area without any deliberate human assistance. Arguments for sustaining “wild life” in city parks are many, deriving from humanitarian, ecological, social, or economic considerations. The author acquaints the reader with research conducted as part of the project Nature of the Skaryszewski Park. The diagnosis relating to that Warsaw park enabled the formulation of a range of recommendations whose application would protect and foster living nature in city parks.

Opis:
This research paper covers the way in which landscape delimitation is carried out in a historic urban area context. Landscape delimitation, in this case, explores the relationship between landscape considerations in the urban and heritage planning system in Algeria. The characterisation of the historic urban landscape is challenged by various types of values. The landscape assessment of the central urban historic area of Algiers was focused on its beauty configuration using the AHP multi-criteria method, supported by values obtained through GIS. Various delimitation alternatives of the historical urban landscape are assessed. Distinctive landscapes emerge, moving away from the original historic urban landscape, which is strictly related to the context of the casbah. Spatial landscape delimitation is the means by which the connecting values of the landscape and their interconnections are managed by monitoring problems of fragmentation and ensuring their interaction at the different boundaries. Urban planning must necessarily incorporate landscapes boundaries into the decision-making processes for the conservation of value connections and managing its beauty configuration.

Opis:
The survey interviewed three hundred and nine people in five public places within Warsaw. The aim of the survey was to examine if people's sound preferences are related to a place's function and how these preferences diferentiate. A further aim of this research was to gather users' ideas for making city soundscapes more pleasant. The results showed that people generally prefer natural and human sounds, but do not like mechanical sounds; the importance of specific sounds are diferentiated in relation to the function and history of a place. The main way to make urban places sound better and more appropriate to their function is to eliminate or reduce mechanical sounds (especially trafic), but individual methods depend on local conditions. The second way to make places sound better is to increase natural sounds and to make soundscapes more appropriate to their function - an increase in human sounds (mainly music).

Establishing monuments of nature is often typically discretionary. The legal acts contain only general information that the particular goal of tree protection is to preserve their natural, landscape, scientific and cultural values. The aim of the study was to determine the value of trees established as natural monuments in BielskoBiała to detail selected criteria for establishing new monuments. Most of all monuments of nature established in Bielsko-Biała are pedunculate oaks, 20%, followed by sycamore and London plane. Together, they constitute about 45% of all natural monuments. Based on the analysis, it has been shown that a significant part of monuments of nature in the city grows in areas of high historical value. Based on the mean and standard deviation values, trunk circumference threshold values have been determined for the species most commonly established as monuments of nature, making it possible to perform a comparative analysis of the trunk circumferences of new potential natural monuments. In addition, it is recommended to preserve the greatest possible species and varietal diversity of ancient trees by extending the protection of taxa that have not been established as natural monuments so far. Due to the presence of trees in the cultural landscape, the form of protection should complement the protection of the cultural landscape, e.g. in the surrounding of historical objects entered into municipal records or historical areas not subject to legal protection. The presented method of assessing the value of natural monuments may contribute to facilitating the decision to establish new monuments in urban areas in a more conscious manner.

Opis:
This article reinterprets the urban pattern of the oases of southern Tarim Basin, which flourished in the first half of the first millennium C.E. using the dispersed urban complexes framework. Disperse urban centre, also known as a low-density urban complex, is a site that had an urban function, but its morphology was much different from compact cities of, for example, China or mediaeval Europe. Low-density urban complexes, like Tikal in Mesoamerica or Angkor in South-East Asia, despite their distinct urban functions, had the cityscape consisting of intermingled monumental agriculture, water management features and agricultural field. Thus, the oasis-cities of southern Tarim Basin were different from compact urban centres of neighbouring China and western Central Asia and showed some similarities to complexes like Tikal and Angkor. This article evaluates if those sites can be associated with low-density urbanism. Three selected sites, 尼雅 [Niya], 米兰 [Miran] and 樓蘭 [Loulan], have been evaluated for the presence of characteristic associated with low-density urbanism: dispersed monumental architecture, large scale anthropogenic landscapes modifications, and pattern of alternating housing clusters and agricultural fields. This can affect our understating of both the understanding of urbanism in the region and low-density urbanism on the global scale.

Opis:
The period since the 1960s has been characterised by growing societal concern with urban heritage protection and the development of legislative, fiscal and urban planning instruments that seek to ensure the protection and enhancement of historic buildings and environments. International organisations such as UNESCO and European level documents such as the European Spatial Development Perspective (ESDP) have stressed the cultural and economic value of the ‘wise management of natural and cultural heritage’. Since the 1970s many cities have sought to redefine and regenerate themselves through a revalorisation of their past and the protection and enhancement of their historic urban landscapes. Urban heritage has thus often come to be seen as a component of the territorial capital of places, and often had a symbiotic relationship with the objective of urban regeneration. However, urban heritage is not a static concept and ideas about what constitutes heritage, the value of different historic urban environments, and the contribution they can make to city development and regeneration continue to evolve. This paper reflects on this evolution in the context of the English planning system and illustrates some key trends and issues surrounding urban heritage through a consideration of recent and ongoing heritage related planning episodes in the northern English city of Liverpool.
