Opis:
National stereotypes, as with any stereotype, are a simplified representation of the external world. These simplified images find their reflection and are preserved in the language, in words, metaphors, proverbs, and phraseology. In Upper Sorbian paremiology a self-stereotype of the Sorb is found, a man who primarily sees himself in a positive light, as good, honest, devoted and faithful. A “true” Sorb is also hospitable and pious. The most important component of the sense of identity is, however, the linguistic distinctiveness, which is stressed in the proverbs and expressions. The self-evaluation is formulated against a clear stereotype of the German, who is treated as a “foreigner”, as well as a symbol of oppression. This stems from the common history and the co-existence of the two nations. However, the image of the German emerging from the Upper Sorbian proverbs is not exclusively negative. There is no ethnocentrism in the Sorbs’ self-stereotype as, despite stressing their own positive traits, they are objective and have a critical attitude towards their own vices. A clearly negative feature of the Sorbs, which appears regularly in the collected material, is the imitation of German customs. In order to describe such representatives of the Sorbian nation a pejorative ethnonym Němpula is used.

The Łužiski serbski slownik by Křesćan Bohuwěr Pful originated as a result of the Sorbian national revival. As a revival dictionary, it presents a rich collection of words in which borrowings from other Slavic languages abound, accompanied by the dictionary author’s vocabulary proposals. Among other word forms, Pful suggested 95 verbs which reflect very diversified lexical resources with impressive word formations. Various derivatives have been identified with respect to the basis upon which they were formed, including adjectival, noun, verb, adverbial, pronoun and numeral as well as compound verbs. Some of the verb formations suggested by Pful have been incorporated into the lexical resources of Upper Sorbian.

Opis:
The extraction of Upper Sorbian vocabulary with German glosses in parentheses allowed researchers to collect, in a short time, rich lexical material for study and to conduct statistical analyses, which, to some extent, helped to evaluate the role of the Upper Lusatian press in the development of the lexis of this language. The vocabulary extracted from the daily newspaper Serbske Nowiny (the issues of 2011) proved to be very interesting semantically. This collection of words illustrates the development of the Upper Sorbian lexis and reflects thesocial and economic changes which have taken place in recent years. The words explained in parentheses were poorly known or new.

The results of the palynostratigraphical studies presented in this paper come from five boreholes Patoka 1, Czarny Las, Woźniki Śląskie K1, Kobylarz 1 and Poręba as well as from four outcrops at Lipie Śląskie, Patoka, Zawiercie and Poręba, in Upper Silesia (southern Poland). The palynostratigraphical zonation presented by Orłowska-Zwolińska (1983) for the epicontinental Upper Triassic of Poland was applied. The palynomorph spectra are marked by different preservation states, combined with the frequent occurrence of reworked specimens, probably even from Palaeozoic strata. The spore-pollen assemblage recognized in the “Chrzanów Formation” belongs to the early Carnian verrucata Subzone of the palynological longdonensis Zone. The spectrum from the Stuttgart Formation represents the Carnian astigmosus Zone. Spectra in the Patoka Marly Mudstone-Sandstone Member (Grabowa Mudstone-Carbonate Formation), with the Lisowice bone-bearing horizon, represent the middle and late Norian meyeriana b Subzone. The Rhaetian age of the bone-bearing succession in the Lisowice–Lipie Śląskie clay-pit suggested in the literature was not confirmed. The age of assemblages from the “Połomia Formation”, which overlies the Patoka Member, was not determined, owing to the poor state of miospore preservation. Moreover, three types of palynofacies were recognized as being characteristic for a fluvial channel (1), a flood plain (2), and lacustrine and playa environments (3) as well as for an undetermined milieu. Type 1 was found in the deposits of the Stuttgart Formation, the Patoka Member and the “Połomia Formation”, type 2 in the Patoka Member and the “Połomia Formation”, type 3 in the “Chrzanów Formation”, the Stuttgart Formation and the Patoka Member.

Upper Sorbian language, Upper Sorbian lexis, Czech and Upper Sorbian language contact, borrowings
Opis:
The Sorbian Seminary came into being in Prague at the beginning of the 18th century to educate Catholic clergymen. In 1846, the students at the Seminary founded the Serbowka association and began to keep journals as well as produce the handwritten Kwětki almanac. These two sources were used as the basis for an analysis of the language – to be more precise, of the lexicon – used by the members of the association. Pful’s dictionary, published in 1866, served as a point of reference for an analysis of the data collected. The juxtaposition of the language material gathered in the study enables us to observe a great degree of conformity between the lexis used by the Serbowka members and the vocabulary recorded by Pful. What is more, in the yearbooks of the Serbowka and in Pful’s dictionary we can notice a large proportion of loanwords from the Czech language, both older and more recent. This is connected with the attitude at that time towards the renascent language. In the lexicon of the Serbowka members the proportion of bohemisms (or interference from the Czech language) is much greater, which is a result of direct and close contact with the Czech language.

Opis:
Published in 1866, “Łužiski serbski słownik” compiled by Křesćan Bohuwěr Pful was completed as a result of cultural and national revival of Slavic Lausatians and constitutes the first reliable work on the lexis of the Upper Sorbian language. A comparison of the lexical corpus constituting this dictionary with the language used in the press of the time (the material has been excerpted from two year’s issues of the weekly ”Tydźenska Nowina” (Weekly messages) published in 1851 and 1853) seems to be sufficient enough to evaluate the lexis included in the Pful’s dictionary and to provide an answer to what extent this lexicon recorded the vocabulary of the first decades of the national revival. A juxtaposition of the material demonstrates that the Pful dictionary largely reflects the development of the Upper Sorbian language in the latter half of the nineteenth century, for the material encompasses not only the vocabulary of the past centuries but also contemporary loans and borrowings from the Czech language, less frequently from Polish or, generally Slavic loans, to be found in the press. Pful also records a number of older Germanisms. Interestingly enough, the dictionary does not include words that are used internationally though they are quite frequent in the issues of ”Tydźenska Nowina”. Pful replaces them with his propositions of either borrowings from the Czech language or neologisms of his own, often modeled after their Czech counterparts. The dictionary also lacks numerous compounds, collocations and the words that had been apparently coined by the editors of the weekly (oftentimes loan translations from German, e.g. płododružiny (Fruchtarten)). The Pful’s dictionary is also characterized by a certain discernible excess of lexical propositions of the author himself as compared to the actual material excerpted from the publication. The above should be rather treated as an expression of the author’s deliberate attempt to enliven and enrich the Upper Sorbian lexis at the time of the awakening of Sorbian consciousness.

The region of Upper Silesia is recognised as a particular due to the forms of social and political behaviour of a part of its population. Upper Silesians, as ethnic group, are convinced about their separateness. Due to that fact, they are, at least to some extent, an example of a group in which voters' alignments are based on the opposition centre-periphery. This is certainly true for the protagonists of Silesian regional movement, however, this article deals with the problem whether average voter acts similarly. Moreover, the article is a study of a possibility to create an ethnoregionalist party in the future and of consequences that it may have on the politics in the region.

In the sandstones and conglomerates of the Idzików Conglomerate Member (Coniacian), exposed in the Idzików Quarry (SW Poland, Upper Nysa Kłodzka Graben), a moderately diverse assemblage of trace fossils has been recognized. The trace fossils include Arenicolites isp., Asterosoma isp., ?Bergaueria isp., Cylindrichnus isp., Conichnus conicus, Curvolithus simplex, Dactyloidites ottoi, Diplocraterion parallelum, ?Diplocraterion isp., Gyrochorte isp., Gyrophyllites aff. kwassizensis, Macaronichnus segregatis, Ophiomorpha nodosa, Ophiomorpha isp., ?Palaeophycus isp., ?Rhizocorallium isp., Rosselia isp., ?Scolicia isp., Teichichnus isp. and Thalassinoides isp. Escape traces (fugichnia) and some unidentified trace fossils also were found. The following ichnoassociations are distinguished: (IA1) Ophiomorpha-Cylindrichnus, (IA2) Asterosoma-Conichnus and (IA3) Ophiomorpha- Arenicolites. IA1 probably represents a mixture of the impoverished proximal Cruziana ichnofacies and the distal Skolithos ichnofacies, which points to the lower, weakly storm-affected shoreface. IA2 is interpreted as the archetypal Skolithos ichnofacies (opportunistic colonization of tempestite beds) with some elements of the Cruziana ichnofacies (bioturbated, fair-weather background deposits) in the middle, moderately storm-affected shoreface. IA3 is assigned to the archetypal Skolithos ichnofacies, which indicates the upper shoreface-foreshore settings. The trace-fossil evidence implies that the Upper Cretaceous succession was deposited in a shallow, open basin with good oxygenation of the sea floor and normal salinity, under low- to moderately high-energy hydrodynamic conditions. On the basis of ichnological and sedimentological analyses, the deposits studied originated in a system of fan-delta and shallow-shelf settings with common transitional-proximal tempestites. They were deposited in the eastern part of the Upper Nysa Kłodzka Graben during the Coniacian regression.

The studied area of ca. 500 km2 lies within the Main Anticline and the Bytom-Dąbrowa Trough of the Upper Silesia Coal Basin. During the deposition of the fluvial Zabrze Beds, this area was subject to differential subsidence which resulted in gradual eastward thinning of this unit from ca. 250 m near Zabrze to ca. 4 m near Sosnowiec. Maps of net sandstone and coal contents in two stratigraphical intervals selected within the Zabrze Beds point to the presence of four channel tracts. The main tract is parallel to the NE-SW trending axis of maximum subsidence, and the other three are perpendicular to it. During deposition of the Zabrze Beds the main, NE-SW trending channel tract has shifted westward.

Opis:
For centuries, identity has been an important existential issue, because it organizes human relation with the world. Identity is not only one man's being in a biological sense, but the principle of social and cultural order. The identity is the self-awareness, the result of the social actor's involvement in a variety of network connections which are forming a human being together with the biological dimension. Thus, the identity, on the one hand, is a kind of Erikson's tradition, namely the sense of being human, on the other hand interactionist tradition, modification of identity through a process of interaction. Contemporary world, the world of confronting cultures, raises the need for analysis of identity within many cultures, which has been shaped by continuous contact with different values, norms, patterns of behaviour. Upper Silesia has been our empirical reference point for the discussion on social (regional) identity. Identity of Upper Silesia is the result of a long and complicated history and present day. This identity is created by Polish, German, Czech and Jewish a cultural elements.

In the last 20 years, Palaeolithic archaeology in Portugal has produced some of the most revolutionary and important sites in the world (e.g., Côa Valley Palaeolithic rock art; Lagar Velho child-burial and the 400,000-year-old human skull from Aroeira cave) nonetheless, a hiatus visible the map of geographical distribution of these sites is obvious and means nothing but the lack of research and not the absence of human habitation in the past. Nevertheless, some new important Palaeolithic sites have been recently identified during preventive archaeological works. We will present new data concerning these new sites and a framework for a program that can help archaeologists working in preventive archaeology to ensure faster identification of sites, improving performance of archaeological interventions and reducing the economic impact for developers.

Five ceratite zones are proposed for that region: pulcher, robustus, compressus, evolutus and spinosus. The taxonomic compositions of individual ceratite zones from Upper Silesia are almost identical to those of corresponding zones from the Holy Cross Mountains. However, ceratite zones in Poland show lower taxonomic diversity than their equivalents in Germany.

Introduction: Sarcoidosis is a multi-organ disease characterized by noncaseating granulomas. The lesions are usually localized within the lungs and hilar lymph nodes. The sarcoidosis of the upper respiratory tract (SURT) rate is estimated at 0.5–6%. The involvement of the larynx is extremely rare – it occurs in 1.2% of cases of SURT. Materials and methods. We present a case of a patient with laryngeal sarcoidosis. Results: A 48-year-old man had had a diagnosed of dysphonia for 5 years. A diagnosis of chronic hypertrophic laryngitis was made. Empirical course of methylprednisolone was attempted with a short-term improvement. Due to coexisting skin lesions, he was diagnosed with allergy. Chest CT showed moderately enlarged mediastinal and hilar lymph nodes as well as bilateral nodules around the hila. The bronchial biopsy showed no granulomas. Samples taken during microlaryngoscopy revealed sarcoid infiltrates. Conclusions and discussion: There is no unambiguous test confirming the diagnosis of sarcoidosis. It is a typical example of a diagnosis by exclusion. Laryngeal involvement is extremely rare and occurs in 1.2% of cases of SURT. The clinical course of the disease is often difficult to predict. In many patients, the lesion may undergo spontaneous regression. In patients poorly responding to steroid therapy or developing side effects, cytotoxic drugs may be considered.

Hand and forearm injuries are relatively rare in polytrauma patients; their incidence is estimated at 2–5%. Hand and forearm injuries are usually not life threatening, and, therefore are considered of secondary importance, replaced by serious injuries of other body parts. However, they should be treated immediately after stabilization of the general condition of patients, as their delayed management may result in serious dysfunction of the hand. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence, distribution and methods of treatment of hand and forearm injuries in patients treated at the Polytrauma Centre of the SPSK 1 in Szczecin over the period of 4 years. Medical records of 16 patients, 11 men (65%) and 5 women (35%) with a mean age of 34 years (range 19–62) who were treated at the Polytrauma Centre and sustained an additional injury to the hand and/or forearm were analyzed. Medical records of 16 patients, 11 men (65%) and 5 women (35%) at the mean age of 34 years (range 19–62) who were treated in Polytrauma Centre and sustained an additional injury to the hand and/or forearm were analysed. The most common component of polytrauma with associated hand injury was major bone fractures (spine, pelvis and extremities) – 12 cases (70%), followed by chest – 11 (65%), maxillofacial – 9 (53%), brain – 8 (47%) and abdominal injuries – 5 (29%). The most common injury of the distal upper limb was fracture of the distal radius – 9 patients (53%). Two patients sustained excessive crush-degloving injuries which were the primary cause of their admission to the Polytrauma Centre. Nine patients required surgery, predominantly fixation of the distal radius with a plate. All patients survived. The importance of the correct management of hand injuries performed promptly after stabilization of the general condition of polytraumatized patients was emphasized.
