Opis:
The retardation factor (R) is a measure of the ground's ability to restrain the migration of particular nitrogen species. It shows how many times the migration of the substance is subjected to adsorption slower than the actual speed of water flow in the pore spaces. Analysis of this factor is described for the two main forms of mineral nitrogen in groundwater, nitrate and ammonium ions, in soils typical of the area of the Kurpie outwash, in northeastern Poland. Retardation factor values have been determined by laboratory static methods, for various concentrations of these ions in water. For most soil types, the retardation factor values for nitrates, determined for various concentrations of these ions, show little variation. For soils developed from outwash sands the results obtained fall between 1.98 and 4.74; for outwash sands-1.17- 2.68; for clayey sands-2.75-6.94; and for sandy clays -7.4-26.54. The highest values 16.31-42.53 were obtained for sands enriched in iron oxides and hydroxides. A substantially higher variation in the retardation factor is shown by ammonium ions. The values determined vary between 9.4-41.4 for outwash sands, 37.6-84.8 for sands enriched in ferruginous oxides and hydroxides, 72.5-327.4 for sandy soils, 466-1043 for clayey sands and 2326-3772 for sandy clays.

Opis:
Migration and concentration of heavy metals in infiltration waters within unsaturated and saturated zones of a carbonate massif result from their mobility as well as anthropopression. The purpose of this project, carried out in 1995-2005, was to observe changes in the chemical composition of infiltration waters, especially Sr, Ba, Fe, Mn, and Zn concentration in precipitations, in soils and in caves within an unsaturated zone and a saturated zone situated in a carbonate massif. Field research was conducted in the Prądnik River’s drainage basin and at the Zakrzówek horst in Kraków. The chemical and mineralogical composition of limestone samples from 11 different quarries and natural exposures in the Kraków Upland were studied. The mineralogical research was conducted using the Roentgen diffraction method. The concentration of Sr, Ba, Fe, Mn and Zn in 700 samples from precipitation, caves and saturated zone waters was analysed. The determinations were made using mainly the ICP-AES Plasma 40 and ICP-MS Elan method. To assess the quality aspects of the migration of heavy metals, the results of the geochemical modelling were accounted for using the PHREEQC software. The hydrochemical research has shown distinct variability of concentrations of the analysed minor elements in different forms of precipitation (the highest concentrations being observed in sleet and the lowest in pure snowfall). In rainwater as well as in waters of the unsaturated and saturated zones, quantities of the five chemical elements appeared in the following decreasing order: Fe>Zn>Mn>Sr>Ba and Sr>Ba>Fe>Zn>Mn. The chemical composition of infiltration waters in the carbonate massif changes vertically. The fundamental trends in the waters of this area include an increase of Sr and Ba concentrations, a decrease of the concentration of Zn, and static concentrations of Fe and Mn.

Opis:
Double-porosity soils consist of two interacting porous systems corresponding to weakly conductive aggregates and highly conductive inter-aggregate regions. The flow of water in such media can be described with a two-scale model obtained by homogenization. The model consists of a single macroscopic equation for the flow in the highly conductive porous system coupled with a number of micro-scale equations for the flow in the weakly conductive aggregates. In this paper we present a numerical algorithm to solve the resulting system of equations for the case of macroscopically two-dimensional flow. It is based on the finite volume approach for unstructured grid of triangular cells. Special attention is paid to the coupling of the micro- and macro-scale equations. An exemplary calculation is presented, concerning infiltration and redistribution of water in a hill-slope of double-porosity structure with cubic aggregates.

Opis:
The study area, situated near the city of Wrocław in southwest Poland, is part of the hydrogeological system of the Quaternary/Neogene MGB 319, inclusive of a buried valley of high water potential, named the Bogdaszowice structure. This structure is an alternative source of water supply for the Wrocław city area. Numerical modelling is the most effective tool in establishing a groundwater protection strategy for Major Groundwater Basins (MGBs) in complex aquifer systems. In the present study, the first step was to assess the hydrodynamic conditions of the Radakowice groundwater intake by analyses of head contours, pathlines, average flow times and capture zones of particular wells. Subsequently, these results were used in combination with other data and compiled as GIS layers. The spatial distribution of hydraulic conductivity was based on the lithology of surface sediments. Other data sets such as the thickness of the unsaturated zone, average soil moisture and infiltration rate were taken either directly from the model or were calculated. Based on the input data obtained, vertical flow time calculations for every model cell were made. The final outcome is a map of the protection zone for the aquifer system of the MGB 319.

Opis:
The intrinsic vulnerability of groundwater aquifers refers to their sensitivity to all contamination coming from soil surface irrespective of the nature of the polluting. In order to improve the protection of groundwater, there must be a reduction in the infiltration of contaminants towards the reservoir through the impacting factors determination of this phenomenon by means of research. There are collected models that include particular number of factors which allow the determination of a sign of groundwater vulnerability of all superficial pollutions. The goal of the study centers on ascertaining the state of vulnerability and the risk of groundwater pollution of the Collo region with a new proposed method by Kherici. Generally, assessment methods of vulnerability and the danger of groundwater pollution employ parametric systems with numerical quotation, cartographic superposition where the analytical methods are based on equations. In this study, we consider the combination of criteria dependent on natural factors (thickness of the unsaturated zone, geologic facies, degree of auto-purification) and the causes of groundwater vulnerability to man-made pollution (anthropogenic factors).

Opis:
This paper compares numerical solutions of transient two-dimensional unsaturated flow equation by using different averaging schemes for internodal conductivities. Averaging methods such as arithmetic mean, geometric mean, upstream weighting, and integrated mean are taken into account, as well as a recent approach based on steady-state approximation. The latter method proved the most flexible, producing relatively accurate solutions for both downward and upward flow cases.
