    This article collates the evidence of coin hoards from Palmyra in order to reflect on the causes behind some of the most dramatic events that befell the city in Late Antiquity and early Islam. After having stressed the importance of coin hoards as sources to reconstruct the city’s past by looking at a couple of examples dated to the fourth century AD, the article moves on to the early Islamic period. It argues that the unusual concentration of coin hoards dated to the second half of the seventh century suggests that the city underwent a period of unrest at that time and reflects on the causes that might have triggered it.

    Introduction The purpose of this study was to develop and initially validate an objective, yet quick, method for assessment of human fatigue. This aim can be achieved by the use of an optical, non-contact method of analysis of pupil activity. The study involved 2 phenomena typical for the behavior of the human pupil: pupillary reflex and pupillary movements. The 1st phenomenon is related to the pupillary light reflex (PLR), which presents the results of physiological adaptation mechanisms of the human eye. The pupillary unrest index (PUI) is an additional parameter referring to the tendency for instability of the pupil. Material and methods Indicators of these 2 mechanisms were assessed under the same experimental laboratory conditions. Assessment was conducted on a group of volunteers (N = 10) during 4 controlled series of measurements performed at night. Pupillary reflex parameters associated with PLR and pupillary unrest index (PUI) were recorded using F²D Fit-For-Duty, a commercially available system made by AMTech Pupilknowlogy GmbH. Baseline pupil diameter, oscillations, reflex latency, maximum reaction time, pupil constriction time, pupil dilation time, and constriction amplitude were recorded. Results As a result of the study, we were able to demonstrate correlation and confirm the usefulness of PLR and PST methods in the assessment of sleep deprivation. Parameters of PLR that may indicate human fatigue were identified. The effect of light impulse sequences on the dynamics of pupillary reflex and the relationship between PUI (pupillary unrest index) measurement duration and sleepiness assessment validity, were assessed. Conclusions The results of the pilot studies were sufficient to develop minimum requirements for a PLR sensor that would be capable of estimating the level of fatigue with accuracy of a PUI method, but at a 5 times faster rate.

    The subject-matter of my consideration covers chosen films about social inequalities and the resulting unrest in various parts of the world at the turn of the second and third decade of the 21st century. Film characters deprived of education, work, medical care and a dignified place to live have no hope of improving their existence. Growing frustration leads to aggression, breaking the law, brutal violence as well as riots and street fights. The purpose of this article is to reflect on the issues raised in film discourses and to try to find answers to questions about the causes and factors that cause social unrest. The category of human dignity was used to analysis the studied issues.
    Przedmiot rozważań stanowią wybrane filmy ilustrujące społeczne nierówności i wynikające z nich niepokoje w różnych częściach świata na przełomie drugiej i trzeciej dekady XXI wieku. Ich bohaterowie pozbawieni możliwości edukacji, pracy, opieki medycznej i godnego miejsca do mieszkania żyją bez nadziei na poprawę egzystencji. Narastająca frustracja prowadzi do agresji, łamania prawa, brutalnej przemocy oraz zamieszek i walk ulicznych. Celem artykułu jest namysł nad problematyką podejmowaną w filmowych dyskursach i próba znalezienia odpowiedzi na pytania o przyczyny i czynniki wywołujące społeczne niepokoje. Do analizy badanej problematyki została wykorzystana kategoria godności ludzkiej.

    The text is an analysis of the socio-political situation in Western Pomerania during the political crisis in the Polish People’s Republic at the turn of 1971. Szczecin lay in the heart of the workers’ protests, however, it was the events in Gdańsk that received the most spotlight at that time and later on. The article aims to gather and analyse information from primary sources on how the inhabitants of the country learned about social unrest in big cities, how they interpreted and commented on it, and how it all translated into social sentiments. Such an approach to the problem also provides an opportunity to carry out an analysis based on the dichotomy between the ‘core’ and ‘peripheral’ areas. This is possible due to the accessibility of appropriate primary sources, which in the examined cases are constituted mostly by the documentation gathered by the Security Service, so far used to a small extent. It should also be stressed that the documents on the events of December 1970 in the context of the country in Western Pomerania were rather scant. The analysis of the documentation demonstrates how important Szczecin and Gdańsk were for social sentiments in 1970 and 1971. The incidents in ‘core’ cities were closely observed, and the patterns of protesting were then copied by the country. The scale of those ‘peripheral’ protests was smaller, and they usually did not turn into street fights, but their impact was felt, heard and seen. The methods of protesting in the country involved distributing leaflets, making inscriptions, conversing on related topics and, above all, sharing a desire to bring about a socio-political change expressed by strikes and public protests. These occurrences showed how much the ‘peripheral’ areas were inspired by the ‘core’ ones. There is no doubt that December 1970 left a lasting mark on the memory of the inhabitants of the country in Western Pomerania.

    Studium, czerpiąc z doświadczeń badawczych najwybitniejszych interpretatorów intertekstualności w prozie Conrada, w tym m.in. Yves’a Hervoueta, dąży do ustalenia interpretacyjnego punktu zero w wypadku badania niejasnych, a wręcz podprogowych oddziaływań romantyzmu polskiego na pisarstwo Conrada. Są one tak wieloznaczne i zróżnicowane, że – czerpiąc z tytułu imponującej monografii Hervoueta The French Face of Joseph Conrad – należałoby je określić mianem aspektu, nawet – dominanty „polskiego oblicza pisarza”. By konteksty polskoromantyczne u Conrada doprecyzować oraz uwypuklić, trzeba byłoby przetworzyć klasyczne pojęcie intertekstualności, skrzyżowawszy je z tzw. metodologią hontologiczną, u której podstaw spoczywa Derridiańska teoria widm. Syntetyczne badanie intertekstualno-komparatystyczne tomu Opowieści niepokojące z 1898 roku wskazuje, że (oprócz odwołań do Flauberta czy Merimée) równie istotne pozostają dla ujęcia Conradowskiej intertekstualności konteksty polskoromantycznej szkoły litewskiej (Mickiewicz) i ukraińskiej (Słowacki). W toku analizy – jako dwa konkurencyjne kręgi intertekstualne – powinny być zawsze oddzielane od siebie i wyodrębniane.
    The study, drawing from the research experience of the most prominent interpreters of intertextuality in Conrad’s prose, including Yves Hervouet, seeks to establish an interpretative zero point in the case of the study of the vague, or even subliminal influences of Polish Romanticism on Conrad’s writing. They are so ambiguous and varied that – drawing from the impressive monograph of Hervouet The French Face of Joseph Conrad – they should be described as an aspect, or even – the dominant feature of the „Polish Face of the writer”. To clarify and emphasize Polish-romantic contexts in Conrad’s texts, it would be necessary to transform the standard concept of intertextuality, crossing it with the so-called hontological methodology based on Derridian Theory of Spectres. A synthetic intertextual-comparative study of the volume Tales of Unrest from 1898 indicates that (apart from references to Flaubert or Merimée) the independent contexts of the Lithuanian (Mickiewicz) and the Ukrainian (Słowacki) School of Polish Romanticism should remain equally important for Conrad’s intertextuality. Therefore during the analysis – as two competing intertextual circles – they should always be separated and differentiated. Biogram
