The consciousness of a crisis of university inclines towards its reformation. In the thinking about its revival it is necessary to take into account the archetypical idea behind university, traditions to date, contemporary conditions and visions of the future. It is also getting indispensable to take into consideration such values that ought to steer the development of university in the framework of global civilization. The tasks of university are as follows: 1) to conduct research in striving for truth in the conditions of autonomy and freedom, as well as responsibility for the present day and the future of man; 2) to educate students, which introduces them in the world of science and life, as well as teaches them to be responsible; 3) to practice public science which is present in debates undertaking to solve vital social problems. The academic community and its elites should defend the conception of university against the dictate of their political and economic counterparts who attempt to impose the idea of an entrepreneurial university which produces a utilitarian knowledge and “human principles”.

Rites and ceremonies are very important in university reality. They are extremely important for maintaining the continuity of academic values and highlighting the rank of certain events, which is particularly visible during various academic ceremonies. This article will be devoted to academic rituals, ceremonies and symbols in the context of their social meaning and values. I refer this issue to other dimensions of socio-cultural reality (including ceremonial court practices), I will look for similarities, explaining their significance and roles. I will try to justify how – regarding their long history and tradition – we can understand them in the 21st century.

Rok 2019 jest rokiem szczególnym, z uwagi na 90. rocznicę powołania uczelni. W latach 1929–2019 mury warszawskiej Akademii Wychowania Fizycznego Józefa Piłsudskiego opuściło ponad 50 000 absolwentów, wypromowano licznych doktorów i doktorów habilitowanych, zbudowano poważny potencjał naukowo-badawczy. Obecnie studiuje na pięciu wydziałach i dziewięciu kierunkach 4557 studentów. Absolwenci mają wysokie kwalifikacje, odpowiadające potrzebom społeczeństwa XXI w.: są zatrudniani jako nauczyciele, trenerzy, instruktorzy, fizjoterapeuci, pielęgniarze, kosmetolodzy i specjaliści terapii zajęciowej – są wysoko cenionymi specjalistami zatrudnianymi w Polsce i w innych krajach w Europie. Z okazji Jubileuszu organizowane są konferencje naukowe, sympozja, publikacje, wystawy, imprezy sportowe i kulturalne – podkreślające chlubną tradycję i podsumowujące znaczący dorobek uczelni.
2019 is a special year, due to the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Józef Piłsudski University of Physical Education. During 1929–2019, more than 50,000 graduates left the walls of the university, numerous doctors and habilitated doctors were promoted, and serious research and development potential was created. Currently, about 4,557 students attend five faculties and nine fields of education. All graduates are highly qualified and meet the needs of the 21st-century society: they are employed as teachers, trainers, instructors, physiotherapists, nurses, cosmetologists and occupational therapy specialists – they are highly appreciated in Poland and other countries in Europe. Various scientific conferences, symposia, publications, exhibitions, sporting and cultural events are organized on the occasion of the Anniversary. They are emphasizing the tradition and summarizing the achievements of the Józef Piłsudski University of Physical Education in Warsaw.

The authors of this paper examine the ancient concepts of translatio, imitatio and aemulatio. The text goes over some problems of the heritage of antiquity and its reception in European culture of the early modern period. These questions were discusssed during the international conference “Heredes et scrutatores. Attitudes towards Antiquity in the Renaissance and in the Early Modern Period”, which was held on 19–20 May 2016 at the University of Warsaw. It celebrated the 200th anniversary of classical studies at this university. The conference seeked to explore the changing attitudes towards the heritage of classical antiquity in post-classical European culture. The scholars participating in the meeting tried to (re)examine the diversity of these attitudes in the period between the Late Middle Ages and Early Modern Times and to reflect on a number of related problems, among which were the theoretical viewpoints that had been suggested to describe this diversity. One of them, which gave its name to this conference, distinguishes between two general approaches: that of the “users”, concentrated on adapting the classical legacy by means of procedures inherited from the ancient Romans, and that of the “researchers”, which replaced the former procedures with ones typical of scholarly cognition. The participants discussed theoretical issues and concrete cases illustrating the ways that the intellectuals of the Renaissance and Early Modern Times approached the Greek and the Roman legacy. The connections between past and present attitudes towards antiquity have also been be the subject of the debate.

Il riferimento alle radici culturali della capacità d’attrazione dello Studio di Padova presuppone ripercorrerne la plurisecolare storia. La reputazione internazionale dello Studio si basava anche sull’invenzione di una tradizione imperiale nella fondazione, sull’idea di una continuità fra il mito di Atene e Padova, sull’atmosfera di libertà e tolleranza per gli studenti stranieri a Padova nel secondo Cinquecento. L’esplorazione archivistica del fondo Riformatori dello Studio riletta attraverso la letteratura critica elaborata dal Centro per lo studio della storia dell’Università di Padova ha consentito di cogliere, e precisare, la complessità di queste radici. Non si trattava di espedienti retorici ma di forme culturali che accrescevano il prestigio del ceto dei dottori leggenti e la legittimazione culturale dell’Università e che trovavano riscontro nelle politiche culturali della Repubblica di Venezia. L’esempio degli illustri studenti, come il polacco Jan Zamoyski, e la tradizione regale francese e imperiale contribuiscono a spiegare un’innovazione istituzionale, come la creazione di speciali collegi per la concessione per i gradi accademici per autorità della Repubblica, estesa pure agli studenti poveri, ebrei, greci e non cattolici.
A reference to the cultural roots of the ‘Studio di Padova’s attractiveness stems from tracing its centuries-old history. The Studio’s international reputation begun with the invention of an imperial tradition in its very foundation, with an idea of continuity between the myth of Athena and the city of Padua, with freedom and tolerance for foreign students in Padua in the second half of the sixteenth century. The exploration of the archives of the fondo Riformatori dello Studio, reread through the critical lens of the Centro per lo Sstudio della storia dell’Università di Padova’s literature made it possible to capture and specify the complexity of these roots. They were not mere rhetorical figures but real cultural forms enhancing the ‘reading doctors’ class prestige and the University’s cultural legitimacy. They were reflected, as well, in the cultural policies of the Republic of Venice. The example of some distinguished students, such as Jan Zamoyski from Poland, together with the royal tradition of France and of the empire, help explain the institutional innovation represented by the creation of special colleges responsible for granting academic degrees by authority of the Republic, also to students who were poor, Jewish, Greek or non-Catholic.

Summary It is indicated in the lecture that higher education (universities) is one of the fundamental entities that change the image of cultural and civilizational life. Nowadays, its existence in Poland is based on the European Union projects, including rules of so called the Bologna process. Changes in the image and development of the Polish academicism that have been taking place, became subject of deep criticism made by scientific communities, as well as broad public opinion. In the process of these changes a clash between traditional values and information society creation was revealed. A particularly critical attitude towards the present development of academicism at the University is presented by representatives of humanities and social sciences.

In the article, the Belarusian interests of Slavists who worked at the University of Warsaw in the ХІХ – early ХХ centuries are described and analyzed (at different times: Royal University of Warsaw, Main School of Warsaw, Imperial University of Warsaw). The writings, which now belong to Belarus, in the beginning ХІХth century attracted the attention of S. Linde and in the end ХІХth century – that of J. Karsky. The first, because of objective reasons, could not consider its gradual development, and the second made a thorough description, noting the cessation of „Western Russian writing” (in Cyrillic and Arabic versions).
W artykule ukazano i przeanalizowano zainteresowanie białorutenistyką filologów-slawistów, którzy w ХІХ i na początku ХІХ wieku pracowali na Uniwersytecie Warszawskim (w różnych okresach był to Królewski Uniwersytet Warszawski, Szkoła Główna Warszawska, Cesarski Uniwersytet Warszawski). Zabytki, które obecnie należy uważać za białoruskie na początku ХІХ wieku przyciągnęły uwagę S. Lindego, a od końca XIX wieku – J. Karskiego. Pierwszy z obiektywnych powodów nie mogł rozważać o stopniowym rozwoju tego piśmiennictwa, drugi dokonał jego dokładnego opisu, odnotowując zanik „pisma zachodnioruskiego” (odnośnie łacińskiego i arabskiego systemu graficznego).
У артыкуле пададзена апісанне і аналіз беларусістычных зацікаўленняў філолагаў-славістаў, якія ў ХІХ – на пачатку ХХ ст. працавалі ў Варшаўскім універсітэце (у розныя часы – Каралеўскі Варшаўскі ўніверсітэт, Галоўная Варшаўская школа, Імператарскі Варшаўскі ўніверсітэт). Пісьменства, якое ў сучаснасці адносіцца да беларускага, на пачатку ХІХ ст. прыцягвала ўвагу С. Ліндэ, а з канца ХIХ ст. – Я. Карскага. Першы па аб’ектыўных прычынах не мог разглядаць яго стадыйнае развіццё, другі зрабіў грунтоўнае апісанне, адзначыўшы заняпад „заходнерускага пісьменства” (у кірылічнай і арабаграфічнай разнавіднасцях).

W pracy przedstawiono szeroki przekrój strojów i insygniów Uniwersytetu Rolniczego w Krakowie, które swoimi korzeniami sięgają średniowiecza. Omówiono najważniejsze dzieje i zmiany, które zachodziły w użytkowaniu ubiorów akademickich od czasów Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego po wytworzenie się samodzielnej Wyższej Szkoły Rolniczej w Krakowie. Autor przedstawił także współczesny wygląd strojów ceremonialnych: rektorskich, prorektorskich, dziekańskich oraz innych używanych na uczelni. W drugiej części omówiono tradycje stroju studenckiego, w tym czapki akademickiej, oraz współczesne stroje używane przez zespoły artystyczne budujące życie kulturalne w środowisku URK. W podsumowaniu zawarto wnioski dotyczące tego, jakie funkcje pełnią ubiory akademickie i jaka jest ich rola w działaniu krakowskiej wyższej uczelni rolniczej współcześnie.
The study delves into the diverse array of regalia and ceremonial attire employed by the University of Agriculture in Krakow, tracing their origins back to the Middle Ages. It explores significant milestones and transformations in the evolution of academic attire, spanning from the era of the Jagiellonian University to the establishment of an independent agricultural institution in Kraków. Detailed examinations are provided on the contemporary manifestations of ceremonial garb, including those of the rector, vice-rector, dean, and other officials within the university hierarchy. Additionally, the study investigates the enduring traditions surrounding student attire, encompassing the iconic academic cap and modern costumes worn by artistic ensembles that have enriched the cultural fabric of the academic community at URK. Concluding reflections offer insights into the multifaceted functions of academic attire and its integral role in the contemporary operations of the Kraków agricultural university.

Szkic, napisany z bardzo osobistej perspektywy, poświęcony jest sposobowi, w jaki prof. Marian Maciejewski wykorzystywał lirykę polskiego oświecenia do przedstawienia źródeł i inspiracji polskiej poezji romantycznej (przede wszystkim A. Mickiewicza), a także wskazuje, co w poezji osiemnastowiecznej interesowało tego badacza, w jaki sposób opisywał cechy szczególne poezji czasów Stanisława Augusta, w czym upatrywał jej roli prekursorskiej wobec dokonań poezji XIX wieku oraz w jaki sposób rozwinął wcześniejsze badania Czesława Zgorzelskiego, poświęcone literaturze tego czasu.
The sketch, written from a very personal perspective, is evoted to the way, in which Prof. Marian Maciejewski used lyrical poetry of the Polish Enlightenment to present sources and inspirations of Polish Romantic poetry (first of all that by A. Mickiewicz), and also it indicates what was interesting for this scholar in the 18th century poetry, how he described the characteristics of the poetry written in Stanisław August's times, where he perceived its pioneering role for the achievements of 19th century poetry, and in what way he developed the earlier studies by Czesław Zgorzelski devoted to the literature of that time.

Ludwik Osiński – professor-aesthete. An attempt to valorize the comparative literature lectures The article is an attempt to give a broad outline of the profile of Ludwik Osiński as a literature lecturer at the Warsaw University. Over the centuries, the author of Zbiór zabawek wierszem has been accused of: lack of originality in concluding, imitativeness, deficiency of qualifications characteristic for a university lecturer, and finally, disapproval for transformations taking place in literature. The purpose of the article is to answer the question about the Osiński’s position among the scientists of the Congress Kingdom. Moreover, this paper is also an attempt to verify the slightly understated, still taken over and reproduced judgements about unilateral and definitely negative attitude of scientists towards the critical legacy of the author of Zbiór zabawek wierszem. When assessing the aesthetic and literary achievements of Ludwik Osiński, two points of reference were determined; the first one is the heritage of Antique, and the other one – the European literary doctrines developing in the 2nd half of 18th and the beginning of 19th century. In the exemplification, the author of the article subjects a fragment of the Osiński’s course (Wykład literatury porównawczej, czytanej w Uniwersytecie Warszawskim, [The lecture of comparative literature, read at the Warsaw University]) devoted to lyrical poetry to research review. A detailed presentation concerns a few issues, mainly the attitude to the antique tradition and the European literary doctrines, as well as understanding of the rules of evaluating and valuing of literary works.
