    The article aims to investigate the possibility of the convergence and catching up of life expectancy values observed in West African countries with those noted in North African countries. Following the theory of time series convergence, documented in Bernard and Durlauf (1996) and Greasley and Oxley (1997), more robust unit root tests, based on the Fourier nonlinearity and instantaneous breaks proposed in Furuoka (2017), are used in investigating the convergence of each pair of a West African country and its North African counterpart. As no unit root in the differences of the pairs implies convergence, the results obtained by means of the new statistical approach quite outperform those produced by classical unit root tests. The results provide general evidence of the convergence of life expectancy values recorded in West Africa and North Africa.

    This article defines the Autoregressive Fractional Unit Root Integrated Moving Average (ARFURIMA) model for modelling ILM time series with fractional difference value in the interval of 1 < d < 2. The performance of the ARFURIMA model is examined through a Monte Carlo simulation. Also, some applications were presented using the energy series, bitcoin exchange rates and some financial data to compare the performance of the ARFURIMA and the Semiparametric Fractional Autoregressive Moving Average (SEMIFARMA) models. Findings showed that the ARFURIMA outperformed the SEMIFARMA model. The study’s conclusion provides another perspective in analysing large time series data for modelling and forecasting, and the findings suggest that the ARFURIMA model should be applied if the studied data show a type of ILM process with a degree of fractional difference in the interval of 1 < d < 2.

    Research background: Studying the dynamic characteristics of unemployment rate is crucial for both economic theory and macroeconomic policies. Despite numerous research, the empirical evidence about stochastic behaviour of the unemployment rate remains disputable. It has been widely agreed that most economic variables, including unemployment rates, are characterized by both structural breaks and nonlinearities. However, a little work is done to examine both features simultaneously. Purpose of the article: In this paper, we analyse the stationarity properties of unemployment rates of Euro area member countries. Also, we aim to test stochastic convergence of unemployment rates among member countries. Our empirical procedures explicitly allow for simultaneous gradual breaks and nonlinearities in the series. Methods: This paper develops a new unit root test procedure for panel data, allowing for both gradual structural breaks and asymmetric adjustment towards equilibrium. We carry out Monte Carlo simulations to examine small sample performance of the proposed test procedure and compare it to the existing test procedures. We apply the newly proposed test to examine the stochastic properties of the unemployment rates of Euro-member countries as well as relative unemployment rates vis-à-vis the Eurozone unemployment rate. Findings & value added: We find that the newly developed test procedure outperforms existing tests in highly nonlinear settings. Also, these tests reject the null hypothesis of unit root in more cases when compared to the existing tests. We find stationarity in the series only after allowing for structural breaks in the data generating process. Allowing for nonlinear and asymmetric adjustment in addition to gradual breaks provides evidence of stationarity in more cases. Furthermore, our results suggest that relative unemployment rate series are stationary, providing evidence in favour of stochastic convergence in unemployment rates. Overall, our results imply a limited room for coordinated economic policy to fight unemployment in the Eurozone.

    W niniejszej pracy przedstawiona została hipoteza nominalnej konwergencji cenowej w imporcie towarów tekstylnych do krajów Unii Europejskiej z Chin. W celu zbadania jej występowania w artykule opisano związek pomiędzy konwergencją a stacjonarnością danych panelowych. Zaprezentowana została również krótka charakterystyka wybranych panelowych testów na obecność pierwiastka jednostkowego. Na końcu przytoczono wyniki testów stacjonarności na panelu utworzonym z danych z bazy Eurostat dotyczących importu towarów tekstylnych do UE.
    In the paper the nominal price convergence hypothesis of the textile products imported to European Union from China was presented. In order to measure its presence, the connection between convergence and stationarity of the panel data was shown and the short description of chosen panel unit root test was presented. At the end of the paper the results of these test were shown based on the textile import panel data from Eurostat database.

    This paper investigates the empirical validity of the weak-form Efficient Market Hypothesis [EMH] in global equity markets for agriculture. We examine whether developed agriculture markets are more efficient than emerging agriculture markets. We test six agriculture and food chain indices over the period of time between 2010 and 2013. The weak EMH was tested using the parametric Augmented Dickey-Fuller test as well as the non-parametric Runs test and Autocorrelation function test. The parametric test suggested some evidence for the existence of the weak-form EMH for all six indices in at least some of the five tested periods. However the non-parametric tests clearly proved the inefficiency of all indexes during all periods. Thus we finally rejected the null hypothesis for all indices in all periods. Accordingly agriculture’s developed markets are equally inefficient and predictable as its emerging markets. The results of this work suggest that investors can achieve superior returns by investing in agricultural equity markets following a technical analysis and active portfolio approach. Thus this work is in great interest of investors and portfolio managers following an agriculture strategy. The study adds value to current research of market efficiency in developed as well as emerging markets.

    The national total expenditure of a country is precipitated on several factors of which revenue generated could be one and very significant. This paper therefore examines the contribution of some selected sources of Nigerian government revenue to total national expenditure. Statistical and econometric techniques used for the data analysis are unit root test, cointegration test, combined estimators’ analysis, the error correction model (ECM) and the feasible generalized linear (FGLS) estimators. Results showed that the variables are non stationary but are stationary at first difference. The long-run relationship of total expenditure on oil revenue, non-oil revenue, federation account and federal retained revenue revealed that the variables are cointegrated and required the use of combined estimators. The effect of nonoil revenue and federal retained revenue is very significant. Investigations on the short-run modeling necessitated the use of FGLS estimators. The effect of ECM and federal retained revenue is very significant. Consequently, other sources of revenue apart from federal retained revenue need to be enhanced and tailored towards improving economic growth and development through national expenditure.

    Suicides represent an encompassing measure of psychological wellbeing, emotional stability as well as life satisfaction, and they have been recently identified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a major global health concern. The G20 countries represent the powerhouse of global economic governance and hence possess the ability to influence the direction of global suicide rates. In applying the sequential panel selection method (SPSM) to three generations of unit root testing procedures, the study investigates the integration properties of suicides in G20 countries between 1990–2017. The results obtained from all three generations of tests provide rigid evidence of persistence within the suicides for most member states of the G20 countries, hence supporting the current strategic agenda pushed by the WHO in reducing suicides to a target rate of 10 percent. In addition, we further propose that such strategies should emanate from within G20 countries and spread globally thereafter.
    Samobójstwa stanowią wszechstronną miarę dobrego samopoczucia psychicznego, stabilności emocjonalnej, a także satysfakcji z życia, a ostatnio zostały uznane przez Światową Organizację Zdrowia (WHO) za główny problem zdrowotny na świecie. Państwa G20 są potęgą w obszarze globalnego zarządzania polityką gospodarczą, a tym samym mają zdolność wpływania na kształtowanie się globalnego wskaźnika samobójstw. Stosując metodę SPSM do trzech generacji testów pierwiastka jednostkowego, w opracowaniu zbadano własności integracyjne samobójstw w krajach G20 w latach 1990–2017. Wyniki uzyskane ze wszystkich trzech generacji testów dostarczają mocnych dowodów na utrzymywanie się samobójstw w większości państw członkowskich G20. Uzasadnia to istnienie aktualnego programu strategicznego forsowanego przez WHO, zmierzającego do redukcji odsetka samobójstw do docelowego poziomu 10 procent. Wskazano ponadto, że takie strategie powinny rozprzestrzeniać się z państw G20 na pozostałe państwa świata.

    Celem artykułu jest weryfikacja hipotez dotyczących dynamiki bezrobocia dla danych kwartalnych gospodarki Polski. Wyróżnia się teorię naturalnej stopy bezrobocia (NAIRU) oraz teorię histerezy. Według teorii NAIRU istnieje swoista dla danej gospodarki stopa bezrobocia, a wszelkie odchylenia od jej poziomu są czasowe i gospodarka samoczynnie powraca do stanu równowagi. Według teorii histerezy wstrząsy w poziomie bezrobocia obserwowanego trwale wpływają na poziom naturalnej stopy bezrobocia. Testowanie tych alternatywnych teorii sprowadza się do testowania występowania pierwiastka jednostkowego. Jeżeli proces jest stacjonarny, wtedy można odrzucić teorię histerezy. W przeciwnym wypadku należy zaakceptować występowanie efektu histerezy bezrobocia. Zastosowanie progowego modelu autoregresyjnego do kwartalnych danych o bezrobociu w Polsce latach od 1992 (Q2) do 2017 (Q4) potwierdziło efekt histerezy bezrobocia.
    Two alternative approaches can be found in the literature on the dynamics of unemployment. The first approach is based on the theory of a natural rate of unemployment. Under this theory, the economy can depart from the natural rate of unemployment in the short term due to nominal shocks, but in the long term the economy is expected to achieve an equilibrium indicated by the natural rate of unemployment. The second approach to the dynamics of unemployment is the so-called hysteresis of unemployment theory. According to this theory, all shocks to unemployment will have a permanent effect on the natural rate of unemployment. In a statistical sense, these two theories boil down to testing the unit root. If the unemployment rate is a non-stationary series with a unit root, then the hysteresis-in-unemployment hypothesis has to be accepted. On the other hand, if the unemployment rate is a stationary series then the hysteresis hypothesis is rejected in favour of the natural rate theory. In the study, the rate of unemployment in Poland is analysed in the period from 1992 (Q2) to 2017 (Q4). Threshold autoregressive model applied to the data indicates that the unemployment rate in Poland is a nonlinear process and, therefore, supports the hysteresis of unemployment theory.

    This paper explores the time-series properties of the relative per capita electricity consumption series disaggregated by consumer sectors for the presence of a unit root for eleven post-transition EU countries. To that end, the panel unit root tests without and with structural break(s) were used covering the period 2002–2013. The results of the former indicate that electricity consumption is the unit root process for each sector, indicating that any shock thereto is likely to be permanent. The results of the latter support the non-stationary null for the majority of the countries and sectors under investigation, and also point out that each country was exposed to at least one significant shock affecting some of the electricity consumption variables. Thereby, the shocks will probably have permanent effects on them, and their electricity consumption will be path-dependent. Consequently, there is little evidence of convergence of post-transition EU countries to the single electricity market.
    Artykuł opisuje własności szeregów czasowych dla danych dotyczących zużycia energii w podziale według sektorów konsumenckich. Stanowi próbę wykrycia obecności pierwiastka jednostkowego w jedenastu krajach UE, które przeszły transformację ustrojową. W tym celu wykorzystano panelowe testy pierwiastka jednostkowego zawierające strukturalną przerwę oraz testy bez strukturalnej przerwy w szeregu czasowym obejmującym okres 2002–2013. Wyniki pierwszego rodzaju testów wskazują, że zużycie energii jest procesem pierwiastka jednostkowego w każdym sektorze, co dowodzi, że każdy szok może okazać się trwały. Wyniki testów drugiego rodzaju potwierdzają zerową hipotezę niestacjonarności dla większości badanych krajów i sektorów, a także wskazują, że każdy kraj był narażony na co najmniej jeden istotny szok oddziałujący na zmienne związane z zużyciem energii. Tym samym szoki będą miały w tych przypadkach prawdopodobnie efekty trwałe, a zużycie energii będzie zależne od wcześniejszych uwarunkowań (path-dependent). W związku z tym, w krajach UE, które przeszły transformację ustrojową, niewiele wskazuje na konwergencję w stronę wspólnego rynku energii elektrycznej.

    Agricultural income support is to remain one of the main objectives of the European Union (EU)’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) after 2020. Subsidies contribute to increases in income, but the occurrence of income convergence between member states remains questionable. The aim of this article was to assess the phenomenon of convergence of agricultural income (labour factor remuneration) against a background of income in the broader economy. Eurostat data for the years 2001-2019 were used. Convergences were searched for using basic methods (beta and sigma convergence tests), as well as a stochastic framework (Pesaran unit root test) and the robust Phillips and Sul convergence test for comparison. These analyses indicate that there is convergence in the EU’s agricultural sector, specifically in terms of labour compensation, but also that this convergence is merely relative. This means that while countries’ income growth rates converge, their real income levels do not move to the same level. This conclusion may be an argument for the need to further equalise direct payment rates. The Phillips and Sul test results indicate that incomes in the overall economy are characterised by divergence, but it is possible to identify four convergence clubs.
    Wsparcie dochodów rolniczych jest jednym z głównych celów wspólnej polityki rolnej Unii Europejskiej po 2020 roku. Subsydia przyczyniają się do podniesienia dochodów, jednak problematyczna pozostaje kwestia konwergencji dochodowej pomiędzy krajami członkowskimi. Celem artykułu była ocena zjawiska konwergencji dochodów rolniczych (wynagrodzenie czynnika pracy) na tle dochodów w gospodarce ogółem. Wykorzystano dane Eurostat za lata 2001-2019. Występowanie konwergencji badano za pomocą podstawowych metod (konwergencja typu beta i sigma), jak i w ujęciu stochastycznym (test pierwiastka jednostkowego) oraz z wykorzystaniem odpornego testu Phillipsa i Sula. Przeprowadzone analizy wskazują, że odnośnie wynagrodzenia czynnika pracy w rolnictwie, w UE obserwuje się konwergencję, ale jest to jedynie konwergencja relatywna. Oznacza to, że dochodzi do wyrównania stóp wzrostu dochodu pomiędzy krajami, ale nie obserwuje się zbliżenia poziomów dochodu. Wniosek ten stanowić może argument za potrzebą dalszego wyrównywania stawek płatności bezpośrednich. Wyniki testu Phillipsa i Sula wskazują, że w gospodarce ogółem obserwuje się raczej dywergencje dochodową, ale możliwe jest wyznaczenie czterech klubów konwergencyjnych.

    Opis:
    Celem badania było ustalenie czy stopy bezrobocia w 8 gospodarkach nowo uprzemysłowionych kształtują się zgodnie z hipotezą stopy naturalnej czy z hipotezą histerezy. W tym celu zastosowano wiele rodzajów testów pierwiastka jednostkowego w odniesieniu danych kwartalnych zebranych między 1 kwartałem 2002 a 1 kwartałem 2017. Podsumowując ustalenia można stwierdzić, że konwencjonalne testy pierwiastka jednostkowego, które nie uwzględniają ani asymetrii, ani zmian strukturalnych, dają najbardziej niejednoznaczne wyniki. Z drugiej strony, testy uwzględniające zmiany strukturalne przy zignorowaniu asymetrii potwierdzałyby hipotezę stopy naturalnej dla przyjętego panelu państw. Jednak jednoczesne uwzględnienie asymetrii i niezauważalnych zmian strukturalnych wydaje się dawać najbardziej wiarygodne wyniki i potwierdza histerezę w przypadku stóp bezrobocia wszystkich państw, za wyjątkiem gospodarek/państw azjatyckich: Tajlandii i Filipin.
    The focus of our study is on determining whether unemployment rates in 8 New Industrialized Economies conform to the natural rate hypothesis or the hysteresis hypothesis. To this end, we employ a variety of unit of unit root testing procedures to quarterly data collected between 2002:q1 and 2017:q1. Summarizing of our findings, conventional unit root tests which account neither for asymmetries nor structural breaks produce the most inconclusive results. On the other hand, tests which incorporate structural breaks while ignoring asymmetries tends to favour the natural rate hypothesis for our panel of countries. However, simultaneously accounting for asymmetries and unobserved structural breaks seemingly produces the most robust findings and confirms hysteresis in all unemployment rates except for Asian economies/countries of Thailand and the Philippines.

    The aim of the paper is to examine the mean reversion in health expenditure of 45 sub-Saharan African countries. The series on current health expenditure (percent of GDP in total), obtained from the World Development Indicators, each spanned the years 2000–2017. We employed the Fourier unit root test, which allows modelling structural breaks, to deal with any such breaks that could arise as a result of a small sample size (18 years) of data available on health expenditure of the selected countries. The results showed evidence of mean reversion in the health spending pattern of 27 sub-Saharan African countries. There is evidence of nonmean reversion in the health expenditure pattern of the remaining 18 countries considered. We further investigate the link between health expenditure and health outcome, using infant mortality rate and under-five mortality rate as health outcome variables. An inverse association could be observed between the infant mortality rate and health expenditure and between the under-five mortality rate and health expenditure in 24 sub-Saharan African countries. On the other hand, in 13 other sub-Saharan African countries we observed a positive association between the variables. The findings of this study could be of great importance to healthcare delivery programmes in the studied countries.
    Celem pracy jest zbadanie zdolności powrotu do wartości średniej (ang. mean reversion) w wydatkach na zdrowie w 45 krajach Afryki Subsaharyjskiej. Analizowany jest szereg czasowy odnoszący się do bieżących wydatków na zdrowie (w procentach nominalnego PKB) w okresie 2000–2017. Dane pozyskano z bazy światowych wskaźników rozwoju prowadzonej przez Bank Światowy. Ze względu na prawdopodobieństwo wystąpienia skoków strukturalnych spowodowane stosunkowo krótkim szeregiem czasowym (18 lat) oraz potencjalnymi lukami w dostępnych danych zastosowano test pierwiastka jednostkowego Fouriera, pozwalający na modelowanie skoków w danych. Wyniki analizy pozwoliły stwierdzić zdolność powrotu do wartości średniej wydatków na zdrowie w 27 spośród badanych krajów. W przypadku pozostałych 18 krajów nie stwierdzono takiej zdolności. Za pomocą dwóch wskaźników: umieralności niemowląt oraz śmiertelności dzieci poniżej piątego roku życia przeanalizowano również związek między wydatkami na zdrowie a skutecznością ochrony zdrowia. Negatywną zależność zaobserwowano w 24 krajach, a pozytywną – w 13. Wyniki niniejszego badania mogą mieć duże znaczenie dla programów opieki zdrowotnej w badanych krajach.

    Badano wpływ obciążenia płyt grzejnych liofilizatora oraz stopnia rozdrobnienia materiału na energochłonność procesu sublimacyjnego suszenia selera. Suszenie prowadzono w warunkach stałej temperatury płyt grzejnych (323K) i ciśnienia (63Pa) po wstępnym zamrożeniu materiału do temperatury 248K. Analiza zapotrzebowania energetycznego poszczególnych podzespołów suszarki sublimacyjnej wykazała istotny wpływ (α=0,05) badanych zmiennych niezależnych jedynie na ilość energii dostarczanej do płyt grzejnych. Stwierdzono, iż jednostkowy nakład energetyczny osiąga minimum przy obciążeniu płyt 3,5 kg/m2 i jest odwrotnie proporcjonalny do stopnia rozdrobnienia badanego materiału.
    The subject of the study was the influence exerted by the load of heating panels and the degree of material break-up on the consumption of energy per unit in the process of freeze drying of celery. The drying process was conducted at a constant temperature of the heating panels (323K) and pressure (63Pa) after the preliminary freezing of the material to the temperature of 248K. Analysis of the consumption of energy by the particular sub-components of the freeze dryer showed that the independent variables studied exert considerable influence (α = 0.05) on the amount of energy supplied to the heating panels. It was found that the consumption of energy per unit achieves minimal value when the load of the heating panels is 3.0 kg/m2 and that the consumption is inversely proportional to the increase of the material disintegration.
