Opis:
A new acoustic navigation system was developed to determine the position and speed of moving underwater objects such as divers and underwater vehicles. The path of an object and its speed were determined by the Doppler shifts of acoustic signals emitted by a transmitter placed on the object and received by four hydrophones installed at the periphery of the monitored body of water. The position and speed measurements were affected by errors mainly caused by acoustic reflections (returns) from the water body boundaries and surface reverberations. This paper discusses the source of the disturbances with the results of a simulation test and experimental measurements. It was demonstrated that the magnitude of the errors could be acceptable in most of the potential applications of the acoustic navigation system.

Opis:
The article describes the process of signal conditioning for examination of acoustic noise correlation properties in shallow water. Knowledge of these properties is very important for the design processes of passive and active hydroacoustic systems. This paper focuses on the above issue from the point of view of passive sonar. In sonar systems, signal processing algorithms operate on both useful acoustic signals, and accompanying noise. Quantitative estimation of the correlation properties of acoustic noise enables an accurate determination of detection conditions. This will verify the validity of certain commonly used simplified models in simulations of hydroacoustic systems. The article presents how the measurement system was constructed, and the structure of files for storing measurement data. It describes the processing algorithm developed for the measured signal conditioning. Research results are presented and discussed.

Opis:
The features of respiratory noises and noises of fins for open-circuit scuba divers, indicating a multipole character of noises emission, are specified in cameral conditions. It demonstrates a possibility to detect low-frequency components of noises of fins with pressure gradient sensor in near field. A possibility of estimating the respiratory rate of an open-circuit scuba diver is demonstrated at distances up to 100 m in real sea. It gives an opportunity of estimating the bearing (time delay in a pair of hydrophones) for the open-circuit scuba diver by respiratory noises at distances up to 150 m in real sea. Thus, low-frequency underwater noises of open-circuit scuba divers may be successfully applied to monitor the safety of diving and to prevent waterside intrusion by trespassers.

Opis:
The paper presents the experimental research associated with the spatial distribution of acoustic energy generated by moving ship into the water. The paper present the methodology of evaluations acoustics energy from the mechanisms of ship into the water environment. For that purpose the research of noise spatial distribution over ship's hull were conducted along with the hydroacoustic field. The hull is source of waves of complex surface shape inducing waves of different amplitudes and phases depending on the position of ship's machinery. As a result of the hull vibrations generated wave distribution depending on the primary sources, as the main propulsion units, generators or other mechanisms. This research allowed to determine position of the main noises' sources of acoustics energy of machinery and propulsion system depending on class of ships and to designate spatial distribution of noise generated by hull of moving ship.

Opis:
The majority of underwater acoustic systems use narrow band sounding signals. Consequently, there is extensive knowledge on how the relevant spatial filters should be analysed and designed. The difficulty begins when the sounding signal has a broad spectrum. Applying the results of narrow band signal analysis to broadband signals leads to serious errors. The same is true for spatial filtration methods when applied to narrow band signals. The article presents a general method for analysing spatial filters designed for broadband signals. It also gives an assessment of the errors caused by applying spatial filtration methods designed for narrow band signals.

underwater acoustic climate
Opis:
The conditions of the acoustic wave propagation in the southern Baltic are much more complex than in other shallow waters. In the typical shallow water, seasonal changes in acoustical conditions in the upper layer, of the depth of about 60-70 m, are observed. They are caused by variation of the annual meteorological conditions. Most often, in the deep water layer, acoustical conditions are stable throughout the year. However, in the Southern Baltic they change during the year also in the deep water layer. They depend on the inflows of highly saline water from the Northern Sea through the Danish Straits, which evoke a dense bottom current increasing the salinity at the bottom. The vertical sound speed distribution in the Southern Baltic is strongly dependent on the hydrological conditions. In the paper the characteristic elements of acoustic climate of the Southern Baltic will be considered, based on data concerning the Gulf of Gdansk. Averaged characteristics of temperature, salinity and sound speed for the years 2000-2010, as well as anomalies, have been determined.

Opis:
In order to prevent hydrofoil colliding with cetaceans, the underwater speaker (UWS) has been installed to repel cetaceans. Yamada et al. (2012) analyzed and devised the UWS sound as it fits the cetaceans' acoustic properties to prevent the collision furthermore. The new UWS sound was devised and synthesized by Yamada et al. (2015) with expectation of avoiding collision with large cetaceans (Patent applied for, JP2014-171411). In this research project, the new UWS sound was investigated by the playback experiment on humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) and by sighting survey in the actual hydrofoil shipping service route. As a result, a physiological and behavioral change of the humpback whale was observed in the playback experiment of the new UWS sound, and the chance of hydrofoil encountering cetaceans of the new UWS sound was smaller than that of the previous UWS sound. Therefore, the improvement of the new UWS sound was confirmed. Lastly, we wish this research project would contribute toward the safer cruise of hydrofoil in the future.

Opis:
The foundations of nonlinear acoustics may be traced nearly 250 years back in time, but only the last 50 years have shown an increasing number of attempts to exploit the research results in nonlinear acoustics. Based upon the fundamental equations of fluid dynamics, the second-order acoustic equations may be derived which can be reduced to a compound equation describing several of the most important and fast developing areas of research in nonlinear acoustics. The relations between this compound equation and Burgers' equation, Korteweg-DeVries equation, the K-Z-K equation, Westervelt's equation and the general second-order wave equation are discussed in depth. Finally, it is shown how the derivatives of the compound equation can be applied to nonlinear acoustic research related to materials characterisation by use of the B/A-ratio, to underwater acoustics by use of the parametric acoustic array and to focused, high-power ultrasonic fields.

Opis:
Contamination of sea environment by noise and any energy radiated to water constitutes today a problem to which more and more attention is paid, in view, a.o., of consequences of an impact of these factors onto marine fauna. European Union has introduced a directive by which EU countries are made responsible to undertake efforts aimed at reaching a good envirenmental status of European seas by 2020. A main source of underwater noise is sea transport of any kind. Propagation of underwater acoustic disturbances in the Baltic Sea highly differs from the course of the phenomenon in a deep sea. Model of spherical propagation cannot be applied to this case in view of water environment limitation by seabed and free water surface, i.e. a reduction of the problem to wave propagation in a water layer of the depth comparable with acoustic wave length. This paper is aimed at demonstration of possible assessment of range of acoustic disturbances generated by a ship sailing in shallow sea, by using a method described in the work [13]. The research was made on the basis of results of own measurements of underwater noise produced by ships in the Gdansk Bay area. An important factor which decIdes on a range of underwater disturbances is a kind of seabed sediments. In this paper there are presented results of numerical investigations based on real data dealing with noise produced by a selected floating unit (ship) for selected characteristic spectral components. The simulations were conducted for the shallow sea model of definite physical parameters such as acoustic wave propagation velocity, geometrical dimensions (water depth) and seabed acoustic parameters as well.
