    This paper is devoted to an analysis of Michail Boitchuk's painting, especially his monumental painting. The development of the painter's outlook has been studied on the basis of numerous comments in theoretical journals. They have been then illustrated by formal examples of this eminent Ukrainian painter. Most of his polychromies have been destroyed, but on the basis of photos we can reconstruct Boitchuk's method of work. We have shown in detail the painter's art from his “Paris” period to the Soviet times and his pedagogical activity in the newly-established Ukrainian Academy of Art. It has been shown how the Soviet authorities of the Ukraine used the painter's artistic skills for the propaganda of the communist idea, and then doomed his artistic output to oblivion, and Boitchuk himself was sentenced to death.

Savadov uses a dead body as a metaphor of a political and social situation. Vasyl Cagolow analyzes the subject of death and violence in popular culture, presenting it as a show that is kitsch and detached from reality.

    The study presents retrospectives of the early periods of the so-called “Soviet culture”, through the prism of historical and political events which occurred after 1917 when Soviet ideologists assigned to avant-garde art, in particular, to futurism and constructivism, to carry out their destructive work. The attention is drawn to historical preconditions of the formation and development of the new forms of the Ukrainian art education. The artistic works of 1920 designated out of passion of the prospects opened by cubofuturism, suprematism, and constructivism are analyzed. The unique features of works of prominent authors consist in their organic combination of social experiment of post – revolutionary epoch with the experiments of avant-garde arts. It is underlined that in particular avant-garde art impregnated by the ideas of futuristic utopia became a real foundation for the offi cial soviet art until 1932.

    The text constitutes a reference to the article on applying social realism discourse in pop-art and modern popular culture (“Ars inter Culturas” 5 (2016): 209-239) and an elaboration by means of including Ukrainian art. It reminds about Ukrainian artists’ contribution to the development of the avant garde of the first half of 20th century and social realism ideas of involvement, “growing of art into” life as well as its presence in various areas of social practice. It also recalls the mediatory role of Władysław Strzemiński between Russian and Polish avant garde. Furthermore, on the basis of examples the author analyses formal strategies adopted from avant garde by the output of social realism, points to iconographic patterns of Ukrainian works from which Polish artists got inspiration according to their programme and critics’ recommendations. Also, differences resulting from the relations between patternmutation are important, as well as the duration of the doctrine which was in force from the first half of the 30s to the end of the 80s of the 20th century in Russia while in Poland in the years of 1949/50-1954/55. In both countries, it had important but different consequences, which results in different attitudes to realism as a general artistic strategy. Contemporary communication and globalisation processes have led to standardisation of visual language also in post-soviet countries, and internet memes play a significant role in it. In the world of the Internet, the elements of social realism discourse become memes detached from old meanings, lose their historical and political sense, become an element of entertaining exoticism which enhances forgetting about an oppressive character of the doctrine which, especially in Ukraine, has led not only to the exclusion but also to the extermination of artists.

    Ukraińska Rewolucja Godności była przestrzenią niezwykłej kreatywności wizualnej, której analiza pozwala lepiej zrozumieć jej istotę, jak również jej podłoże społeczne i polityczne. Artykuł proponuje użycie teorii postkolonialnych, opartych głównie na myśli Frantza Fanona, Leeli Gandhi i Homiego Bhabhy, jako narzędzia służącego lepszemu zrozumieniu sfery wizualnej rewolucji na Majdanie. Oparta jest ona na dualizmie pomiędzy charakterem antykolonialnym i nacjonalistycznym, oraz postkolonialnym, hybrydowym, bazujący na potencjale społeczeństwa obywatelskiego i nowej podmiotowości.
    The Ukrainian Revolution of Dignity was a space of extraordinary visual creativity, the analysis of which allows us to better understand its essence, as well as its social and political background. The article proposes the use of postcolonial theories, mainly based on the ideas of Frantz Fanon, Leela Gandhi and Homi Bhabha, as a tool for a better understanding of the visual sphere of the Maidan revolution. It is based on the dualism between the anti-colonial and nationalist character, and the post-colonial, hybrid character, as well as the potential of civil society and new subjectivity

    In the article an influence of sacred art on Ukrainian painting of the late twentieth century, as exemplified by works of NAFAA teachers, was studied. In the professional literature, an idea was established that Ukrainian art, including painting, in the late twentieth century is closely connected with popular art and folklore, sometimes it is also about the influences of fine arts of previous epochs. Herewith, the influence of sacred art on the formation of a new art is mentioned only cursorily or its significance is completely neutralized. The goal of the work was, first of all, to determine the influence of sacred art on the creation of Kyiv painters in the late twentieth century. To achieve the targeted goal the works of painters, who were representatives of different generations and different stylistic trends, were reviewed and formally analyzed. The pieces of art presented in the work give grounds to state that the influence of sacred art on the formation of Kyiv painting is significantly underestimated. Even a cursory overview of the works suggests that sacred art responded not only narratively. Artists examined and actively used icon-painting and composition building, turned to specific recognizable images and combined them with modern themes. In the study, a special attention is paid to M.A. Storozhenko, the founder of the Department of Sacred Painting, who was not only a prominent artist, but also a teacher, and he managed to educate a number of artists who continue the work of the mentor, teaching sacred painting to a new generation of artists.

    Стаття присвячена питанням, що розглядалися під час міжнародної конференції „Мотив хвороби в історії літератури і культури посттоталітарних країн ЦентральноСхідної Європи”, що відбулася 6 листопада 2020 року. Основні теми доповідачів були сфокусовані на питаннях хвороби як дефекту у літературі, на травмі втрати, тематиці хвороби й зцілення у світовій літературі від її початку до сьогодення, включно з періодами Київської Русі, Ренесансом, Бароко і Модернізмом та побутування травматичного досвіду в наративах Голодомору, сучасної української жіночої прози і здатності українського сакрального і декоративного, а також сучасного жіночого мистецтва візуалізувати хворобу і допомагати митцям здолати свої травми.
    The article is dedicated to the issues considered during the international conference “The motive of the disease in the history of literature and culture of post-totalitarian states of Central and Eastern Europe”, which took place on November 6, 2020. The main topics of the speakers were focused on the disease as a weakness in the literature, the trauma of loss, the theme of illness and healing in world literature from its beginning to the present, including the periods of Kyiv Rus, Renaissance, Baroque and Modernism and the traumatic experience in the narratives of the Holodomor, Ukrainian women’s prose and the ability of Ukrainian sacred and decorative, as well as modern women’s art to visualize the disease and help artists overcome their injuries.

    Artykuł przedstawia autorską typologię współczesnego baletu w kontekście muzykologicznym. Proponowana klasyfikacja z jednej strony opiera się na już istniejących typologiach baletu jako gatunku tanecznego, z drugiej zaś proponuje nowe kryteria podziału dotyczące stricte muzycznych aspektów spektakli baletowych. Typologia obejmuje dzieła baletowe kompozytorów ukraińskich z lat 1980–2020. 
    У статті запропоновано авторську типологію сучасного балету в аспекті музикознавчого підходу. Представлена типологія, з одного боку, базується на вже наявних типологіях балетного жанру, а з іншого – пропонує нові критерії типологізації, які стосуються суто музичної складової балетних вистав. До типології включено балетні опуси українських композиторів 1980-х-2020-х років. Систематизовано основні тенденції роботи композиторів у балетному жанрі. Визначено поняття «сучасний український балет». Ключові слова: типологія, критерії типології, сучасний український балет, сучасне мистецтво.
    In this article the author presents an original typology of contemporary ballet from a musicological standpoint. On the one hand, the proposed classification is based on already existing typologies of ballet as a dance genre. On the other hand, it proposes new criteria which take into account only the musical aspects of ballet performances. The said typology considers ballet works by Ukrainian composers from the period 1980–2020.

    The article is devoted to the visual culture of Ukraine since independence. It pays special attention to the trends and phenomena of contemporary Ukrainian visual culture that have entered the context of world culture through recognition on international cultural platforms (competitions, festivals, biennials, etc.). The considerations concern the development of various trends in contemporary Ukrainian art, which use various artistic media: photography, installation, performance and film. In particular, Ukrainian conceptual photography was the most interestingly represented by several generations of photographers of the Kharkiv School, who combined radical bodily imagery and social criticism. The Ukrainian installation is represented by the works of artists of the REP (Revolutionary Experimental Space) group, which is focused on the unity of art and politics and considers artistic creation as a political act. An interesting sub-direction of the installation is the video installation, which delivers an original combination of contemporary Ukrainian artists with site-specific art and artistic means of reflecting on the traumas inflicted on Ukrainian society by the war. The article pays special attention to the development of contemporary Ukrainian cinema. The author demonstrates the connection between the work of contemporary Ukrainian filmmakers and the traditions of Ukrainian poetic cinema. In addition, other trends in Ukrainian cinema are identified: the experimental search for a new film language, the development of documentary cinema, on top of the convergence of fiction and non-fiction artistic languages in the work of contemporary Ukrainian filmmakers. The dominant issues of contemporary Ukrainian films selected for screening at leading European film festivals are identified: inclusiveness, reflection on Ukrainian history, war trauma, psychological rehabilitation of combatants, etc.
    Artykuł poświęcony jest ukraińskiej kulturze wizualnej od czasu uzyskania niepodległości. Tekst zwraca szczególną uwagę na trendy i zjawiska współczesnej ukraińskiej kultury wizualnej, które weszły w kontekst kultury światowej poprzez zdobycie uznania na międzynarodowych platformach kulturalnych (konkursy, festiwale, biennale itp.). Badany jest rozwój różnych trendów we współczesnej sztuce ukraińskiej, które wykorzystują rozmaite media artystyczne: fotografię, instalację, performance i kino. W szczególności ukraińska fotografia konceptualna była najciekawiej reprezentowana przez kilka pokoleń fotografów szkoły charkowskiej, którzy łączyli w swoich pracach radykalne obrazy ciała z krytyką społeczną. Ukraińską instalację reprezentują prace artystów z grupy REP (Rewolucyjna Przestrzeń Eksperymentalna), która koncentruje się na jedności sztuki i polityki oraz traktuje twórczość artystyczną jako akt polityczny. Interesującym podkierunkiem jest instalacja wideo, będąca oryginalnym połączeniem współczesnych ukraińskich artystów ze sztuką site-specific i odzwierciedlająca traumy zadane ukraińskiemu społeczeństwu przez wojnę. Artykuł zwraca szczególną uwagę na rozwój współczesnego kina ukraińskiego. Pokazuje związek między twórczością współczesnych ukraińskich filmowców a tradycjami ukraińskiego kina poetyckiego. Ponadto zidentyfikowano inne trendy w kinie ukraińskim: eksperymentalne poszukiwanie nowego języka filmowego, rozwój kina dokumentalnego oraz konwergencję artystycznych języków fikcji i non-fiction w twórczości współczesnych ukraińskich filmowców. Zidentyfikowano dominujące tematy współczesnych ukraińskich filmów wybranych do pokazów na wiodących europejskich festiwalach filmowych: inkluzywność, refleksja nad ukraińską historią, trauma wojenna, psychologiczna rehabilitacja bojowników itp.

    У статті представлено ретроспективний огляд розвитку паперових хатніх оздоб – витинанок, що посідають яскраве місце в народному мистецтві України від кінця ХІХ і до сьогодні. Різноманітні прикраси з паперу раніше селяни виготовляли для власного житла переважно перед великими святами, орнаментуючи традиційними композиціями покуть, піч, вікна, стіни, стелю, полиці тощо. Вітчизняні науковці хатній паперовий декор почали вивчати від кінця ХІХ і продовжують дослідження у наші дні. У всі часи активізація і спад розвитку витинанок залежали від історичних умов, суспільних тенденцій, а також діяльності окремих майстрів і дослідників. В останні десятиліття в художньому просторі України завдяки творчості професійних художників витинанки набули рівнозначного поцінування з творами інших видів образотворчого мистецтва. Нині українські витинанки відомі не лише серед співвітчизників, їх знають і цінують у багатьох країнах Європи і світу.
    A retrospective review of the development of paper home decorations – paper cuttings – is submitted in the article. They have been taking a bright place in folk art of Ukraine from the late 19th century till nowadays. Earlier the peasants have made various decorations out of paper for own homes mainly before great holidays, ornamenting icon corner, stove, windows, walls, ceiling, shelves, etc. with traditional compositions. Ukrainian scholars started studying home paper decor in the late 19th century. They continue research is continued nowadays. The activation and decline of the paper cuttings development have depended on historical conditions, social trends, and also the activities of separate craftsmen and researchers during all periods. The paper cuttings have acquired an equal appreciation with the articles of other kinds of the Visual Arts in the artistic space of Ukraine during the last decades owing to the works of professional artists. At present Ukrainian paper cuttings are well-known not only among the compatriots but they are popular and estimated worldwide.
