    Chyba we wszystkich językach podstawowymi kryteriami oceny osób, rzeczy czy zjawisk są kryteria estetyczne (ładny/brzydki) i moralne (dobry/zły). Często jednak określenia należące do tych dwóch kategorii występują przemiennie, wyrażając bardziej ogólnie pozytywną lub negatywną ocenę. Nic dziwnego, że pewne zjawiska określane w jednych językach jako „ładne”, w innych będą uznane za „dobre” lub wyrażane za pomocą jeszcze innych przymiotników – i vice versa. To samo też dotyczy ocen negatywnych. Niniejszy artykuł ma na celu przedstawienie tego zjawiska językowego na przykładzie dwóch języków, polskiego i włoskiego. Ta analiza może okazać się przydatna dla nauczycieli i tłumaczy, gdyż łatwo jest założyć, iż w języku docelowym ocenia się zjawiska za pomocą tych samych przymiotników, których używamy w naszym języku ojczystym.
    Probably in all languages, the basic criteria for assessing people, things or phenomena are aesthetic (nice/ugly) and moral (good/bad) criteria. However, the terms belonging to these two categories alternate, expressing more generally positive or negative assessments. No wonder certain phenomena described as “pretty” in some languages will be considered “good” in others or expressed in terms of other adjectives – and vice versa. The same is true for negative evaluations. This article aims to present this linguistic phenomenon based on two languages, Polish and Italian. This analysis can be helpful for teachers and translators, as it is easy to assume that the target language evaluates phenomena with the same adjectives as we use in our mother tongue.

    Opis:
    On the one hand, the sphere of art offers the possibility to imagine a different, less oppressive and normative world, where just as in the case of cartoons even the greatest gawks, misfits, and outcasts would build friendships and alliances helping them to reach a happy ending. On the other hand, there is something of an artistic performance, at least of an illusionist show, to an intentional act of failure. To perform failure, one has to improvise, to operate randomly, blunderingly, and ostentatiously, as well as to resist the social norms and rules. The artworks that are presented here pertain to all of these meanings of the “art of failure”.
    Sztuka jest z jednej strony sferą, w której można wyobrazić sobie inny, mniej opresyjny i normatywny świat; w nim – jak w kreskówkach – międzygatunkowe przyjaźnie i sojusze nawet największych gamoni, odmieńców i wyrzutków prowadzą do szczęśliwego zakończenia. Z drugiej strony w intencjonalnym uprawianiu porażki jest coś ze sztuki, a przynajmniej sztuczki prestidigitatora. Performowanie porażki wymaga zdolności improwizacji, podążania po omacku, dyletanctwa, fanfaronady oraz przeciwstawiania się społecznym normom i regułom. Prezentowane tu prace nawiązują do tych sensów „sztuki porażki”.

    The present article is an attempt to characterize linguistic ways of theme descriptions, and expressions of ugly man in the literature of the Polish Baroque. Delineation of methods of linguistic verbalization his physical form of ugliness, activities and behavior of states includes about several dozen selected texts of seventeenth-century writers: Wespazjan Kochowski, Jan Andrzej Morsztyn, Krzysztof Opaliński, Wacław Potocki, Stanisław Samuel Szemiot, and others. Pejorative description of ugly man contains inadvisable features and their intensity or defects. Situational facetiousness shows physical eyesore, and negative characteristics or attitudes enumerations presents psycho-moral shortage. Old man is branded notably when he marries younger woman. Comparative analysis of baroque colloquial and poetic texts contains lexical, semantic, syntactic classification of the ways of language descriptions of ugly man.

    Lion Feuchtwanger is known mainly as the creator of historical novels and voluminous epic canvases. However, all his thoughts are directed to the future. With a certain reservation, we can say that he tried on the past to the realities of his time. Until his death, he was concerned with the key question: what are the paths, prospects and main driving forces of events distant from the 20th century in visual comparison with those changes in German society, which he directly witnessed. In a narrow sense, these were the writer’s attempts to resolve the “damned issues” concerning his own nation. In broad terms – philosophical reflections on the fate of humanity. Thus, his work objectively went beyond the national framework, enriching itself with universal and deeply humanistic content.

    This paper ponders on the aftermath effects of beauty, the ugly, and the hypotheses on how to get rid of the ugly. Due to the impossibility of addressing the effects of something that is entirely unknown, the author first attempts, in lieu of a definition of beauty, to examine the three classical conditions for beauty, which will otherwise be respected as in some sense a mystery. Secondly, he turns to the effects of beauty by analogy to the six effects of love as elucidated by Thomas Aquinas; in addition, he adds three other effects of beauty found in classical Greek thought: catharsis, epiphany, and pleasure. Thirdly, he reviews, by way of contrast, the corresponding effects of the ugly; and then he proposes how the ugly can be “redeemed” by beauty.

    The paper presents the study of the original and Russian translation of H. Senkevich’s novel Quo vadis? The postulates of early Christianity as opposed to moral postulates of the Neron Rome, the essence of „the beautiful // the ugly” dichotomy, which is one of the criteria of the veritable values are revealed, as well as the role of this aesthetic category in the author’s ideostyle and the ways of its language presentations, where the lexis with emotive charge plays dominating role, the nominators of the light as morals reforming outset among them.
