- The article attempts to analyse the phenomenon of signs as implemented in nowadays computers with a cautious look to the future, keeping in mind the historical development and role of the sign in the culture. The drawbacks of the current computer typesetting technology are pointed out. In particular, the insufficiency of Unicode numbering for typography applications, and, most importantly, the “frozen” nature of nowadays glyphs, while such applications as music or calligraphy necessitate either infinite number of glyphs or fundamentally different approach. In his paper, the author supports the latter solution suggesting that the glyphs should be just programs capable of communicating with each other.
