The article deals with an outstanding Czech poet Jan Zahradníček (1905–60), who was arrested in 1951 and sentenced for 13 years of prison in a show trial. He was released during the general amnesty in 1960 and died in the same year. His tragic fate is depicted in several collections of poems written in prisons (Pankrác, Brno, Mírov, Leopoldov). The collections were saved and published and his poetic diary was found in Leopoldov prison 55 years after his death. Zahradníček’s poems in combination with the memories of contemporary witnesses and published interpretations of his work (Zdeněk Rotrekl, Rio Preisner, Radovan Zejda, Martin Putna) allow an exceptional view of the inner life of a person who was unjustly imprisoned in the times of communist purges in Czechoslovakia in the 1950s.

Opis:
This paper aims to read Doris Lessing’s “The golden notebook” as a literary experiment, which struggles to find meaning amid fragmented narratives. Aiming to reflect the structure of the experience of mental breakdown, the novel is abundant with literary strategies meant to enhance the understanding of the Real (in Lacanian sense) experience of the main protagonist. Ultimately, all of the stylistic endeavours are doomed to failure, and the experience which cannot be directly communicated surfaces as traumatic: it escapes both chronology and understanding; it renders the protagonist helpless against reality, which she perceives as full of violence. The reason behind the breakdown is elusive, yet it seems to be grounded in historical reality of the twentieth century. Through its inability to convey a message in a conventional novelistic form, “The golden notebook” emerges as a witness to the traumatic nature of human experience of the modern era.

Opis:
The Polish Lutheran Church between the years 1945-1956 was unable to gain the full confidence of its new German worshippers. This resulted in the treatment of this Church as a foreign and imposed one. When, in the course of time, the worshippers came to terms with the status quo, acceptance of the Church increased, but as a factor distinguishing them from Polish Catholics. The distance dividing them from migrant Poles, caused by national factors and historical experiences, was increased by religious differences. A significant role in this situation was played by the Small Group Movement. It did not have an organized nature, but its mental revivalist structuressurvived the period of the Second World War. An awareness of war atrocities strengthened the spirit of eschatology among some of the Small Group Movement members, which is why some of them accepted the existing political situation, regarding it as a penalty for disregarding God’s rules. Some of the Small Group Movement members, especially those who were previously in opposition to German Christians, began to co-operate with the Polish Lutheran Church, which was new to them. On the other hand, for some of the worshippers who existed in unofficial structures, there was an opportunity to fulfill their basic religious needs, which the Polish Lutheran Church was unable to offer them due to its organizational weakness. From the very beginning the key problem of organization was that caused by language, which was a throw-back to the situation in the nine-teenth century and the first years of Weimar Republic, when German was still considered to be “the Church language”. This was the reason why a significant part of the Small Group Movement met with mistrust from the Polish Lutheran Church, which for various reasons was implementing a Polonisation policy, and the open hostility of the police-administrative machinery. On the other hand, inside the Small Group Movement, there was little unity but numerous scattered initiatives, and an escalation of German national spirit became in many instances equally important, or even more important than religious matters.

Opis:
The Small Group Movement in East Prussia, in spite of some external inspiration, was an original product of the local Masurian (and Lithuanian) community, deeply embedded in it and reflecting its religious needs. Its initial radicalizing effect, however, created local distrust, but this was not characteristic of the Movement as such, but only some of its outer forms. Nevertheless, the Small Group Members, unless they denied it of their own will, remained the rightful members of their communities, and were not excluded from them. Modernization processes in the second half of the nineteenth century, marked by significant association trends, reached the community Movement as well, the expression of which was the establishment of the East Prussian Prayer Association in 1885 and other organizations originating from it. The source of these divisions were matters stemming from social tensions, general cultural changes and the desire to take up the challenge. However this Movement, remained in a large measure a bulwark of conservatism and multilinguistic conceptions of the Prussian state, the latter dating back to the period prior to 1871, although the desire to preserve old traditions (principally to maintain the Polish and Lithuanian languages as lingua sacra) did not mean resistance to the state. On the contrary, according to the criteria of the Movement, they acknowledged strictly every authority, unless it contravened common moral rules.

Opis:
Artykuł przedstawia w dużym skrócie historię rozumienia pojęcia ‘autotematyzm’, zaproponowanego w połowie ubiegłego wieku przez Artura Sandauera i znacząco ewoluującego w refleksji badawczej w następnych dziesięcioleciach.
The article presents a short history of the development of the concept of autotematyzm, a term proposed in the mid twentieth century by Artur Sandauer, referring to a kind of self-referentiality, that evolved considerably in scholarly thought in subsequent decades.  Problems in defining the term relate to both its terminological fluidity and the scope of its use, dependent on the influence of literature as it changed and the languages used to describe and analyze it.  The author proposes to formulate the development of the term as a result of the linguistic turn and thus situates it at the center of modernism, whose dominants it expresses, becoming an operative tool for the interpretation of modernity. At the same time, she directs readers’ attention to the current that privileges subjectivity in the reflection on self-referentiality, and its close connection with autobiography, particularly visible after the post-structuralist rupture.

This research paper aims to present the issue of gender studies as a scientific discipline embed in certain research context and in a network of relations with such ideas and conceptions as feminism and queer theory. By analyzing the historical and philosophical context and the range of influence in the area of these three disciplines, I consider the way how they popularly function in the scientific and common discourse. By relating both disciplines to each other and confronting them with the chronology, I analyze possible variants of thinking the sequent of these disciplines or their ahistorical functioning. I also search for the similarities between them, which could advocate a diachronic view and place in the causal context that calls to the synchronic attempt. In that way I consider all points of view and speculate validity or invalidity of synchronic attempt to gender studies, feminism and queer theory. Starting from asking for the historism or ahistorism of the term gender and presenting the way it varies from feminist and queer conceptions, I consecutively analyze feminism with reference to gender research (in both variants of the chronological result); gender research with reference to queer studies and queer studies with reference to feminism.

Opis:
Giacinto Scelsi — actually Count Giacinto Scelsi Francesco Maria d’Ayala Valva — be-longed to this type of artists whose life is inextricably associated with his work. Despite the fact that his countrymen were definitely “alien” to him, he lived and worked the last thirty years of his life in Rome, via di San Teo-doro No. 8, alienated from the Italian musical environment and underestimat-ed as a composer in his homeland. Extremely strict fusion of the life and work of Scelsi allows one to read his artistic decisions materialized in his work and his life choices as a uniform quasi-text. The evolution of his musical language (from the influence of Debussy, the neo-classicism, dode-caphony, machinisme to the highly individual musical poetics inspired by the spiritual and musical cultures of the Orient) closely merged with biographical threads (travels around Europe, real and imaginary internal journeys to the East). Aristocratic origins and privileged social position biased the reception of his work in changing Italian reality (i. a. fascism and communism). The fascination of the Indo-Tibetan tradition of understanding the essence and function of sound led Scelsi to the crystallization of individual musical poetics of Scelsi the composer and at the same time — to the conversion of Scelsi the man to Buddhism, individually conceived and “professed”. The Yoga of Sound practice was treated by composer as a self-therapy and at the same time as his compositional modus operandi, which aimed to explore the third dimension of the sound — its depth in a musi-cal and spiritual sense. Scelsi devoted his personal life to his creativity and “composing” — to the specifically understood transcendence. The role of “the proteus” has initially not been the choice of Scelsi, however, with time and after his life experiences it was deliberately incorporated into his life and creative plan. It can be interpreted as the Scelsian strategy of internal emigration in his own country.

The issue of tobacco planting and cultivation is part of the tobacco industry. The article presents the diseases of the tobacco plant in 50s of the twentieth century. One of the greatest problems related to the execution of cultivation requirements is the issue of plant protection against various diseases. The battle against the diseases of the tobacco plant was carried out in two fundamental ways. The first one included countless research initiatives, due to which it was possible to introduce new, resistant varieties of tobacco, whereas the second one focused on agrotechnical methods of combating diseases, and was based mainly on preventive measures.

Opis:
The main aim of this paper is to delineate the most crucial aspects of the reception of George Bernard Shaw’s plays in Poland. Shaw, believed to have set the direction of modern British drama, has been welcomed enthusiastically by Polish audiences since the beginning of the twentieth century. Warsaw was called a “Shavian city” and his popularity reached its peak in the years between the two World Wars. After WWII, Shaw’s plays were frequently staged and his political views were presented as being in line with the ruling party’s policies. The fall of Communism brought about a decline in his presence on Polish stages, but he reappeared recently in productions that dismantle his plays in postmodern ways

Opis:
The article discusses the motif of the object in the prose of the twentieth century Italian writer C.E. Gadda. Gadda’s attitude towards objects reflects his philosophy according to which the world of (physical and psychological) phenomena is a product of intersecting possibilities and creates a “convolution” of relations – impossible to describe in its entirety – that materializes as an object, event or person. Any understanding of the chaos of the world can only be merely partial and fragmentary. Objects and matter constitute a fundamental component of the narrative world presented by the writer. By using specific stylistic figures of speech (i.e. enumeration, list or catalogue) and distorting the standard language through neologisms, synonymy and calque, Gadda assigns the roles of full-fledged protagonists to the objects, being indispensable constituents of chaos. In itself, an attempt to describe chaos by applying such measures constitutes an attempt to find harmony and order.

Opis:
Giacinto Scelsi was a “traveller to the East”, who tied his life inextricably to creative work. As a composer, he sought a path for the renewal of his own musical language, shaped during his youth under the powerful influence of other composers’ styles. On becoming a homo religiosus, in the Eliadean sense, he found his own path to transcendence through art (creation), deeply inspired by those great traditions of the Orient in which art was a reflection of the artist’s spirituality. The topos of the path is one of the main keys to interpreting Scelsi’s work. His works for large orchestra and choir contain distinct traces of a Scelsian “voyage to the East”. They form one great cycle, integrated by the motif of the path, expressed through meanings added in the content of the individual programme-titles. The cycle’s finale, the eschatological Pfhat (1974), is the musical depiction of a journey that ends with “a clear, primordial light,” symbolising man’s encounter with a higher reality and “great liberation” as the goal of his spiritual path. The chronotope of the path is revealed in the very musical material of his orchestral works: in their quasi-visual soundspace. It is manifest, among other things, in the processual form - one might even say the storyline - and the consistently applied procedure of transforming sonorities, texture and rhythmic structures. A fundamental symbolic function is discharged by various forms of “upwards path”, linked to the dramaturgical role of an upwards motion pattern in the melody and an upwards movement in the tonal-harmonic plan of the orchestral works. The most crucial of all the variants of the motif of the path is the direction “into the core”, that is, towards the “inner space” of the sound. This carries significance both in the dimension of the harmonic spectrum of a sound and also its spiritual depth - the mystical dimension. The journey to the centre acquires the status of an emblematic topos of the Scelsian poetic of the viaggio al centro del suono [journey to the centre of the sound].

Arendt’s work also won wide acclaim, partly due to a critical review by Eric Voegelin, which did not remain without responses from the author (both in public and in private correspondence).
