Opis:
The essay proposes an interpretation of the eulogy of Symeon’s Miscellany considering not only the cultural context of the First Bulgarian Empire at the beginning of the tenth century, but also the historical situation and the literary production of the seventies and eighties of the previous century when the Greek original of the Miscellany known by the name of the Soterios was conceived in Constantinople. This eulogy helps us to better understand the reasons that led to the creation of the Slavic version of this anthology at the time of Symeon. In the Constantinopolitan environment, this anthology was conceived as an adequate tool of the kind required by monks and priests engaged in the education of the laity, with particular focus on the foundations of orthodox doctrine. In the new environment the initiative was taken by Tsar Symeon, who – on the strength of his theological training – assumed a decisive role while occupying the throne by taking responsibility for directly instructing the Bulgarian aristocracy, fully exploiting a tool in the Slavic language that would have been very useful.

Opis:
One of the key points of tsar Symeon’s political program was achieving autocephaly for the Bulgarian church and making its head a Patriarch. It is possible that the archbishop of Bulgaria was proclaimed a Patriarch (913) without Byzantine consent, but the sources only allow for attempting to show that this matter was reflected in the peace treaty concluded after Symeon’s death (927) by Peter, his son.

The Tale of the Iron Cross does not form a primary source for the studies on history of the Bulgaro-Hungarian conflict 894-896. However, it deepens our knowledge on its memory in the Bulgarian society as it presents, to a certain degree, the wiews of the medieval Bulgarians ona war as a notion. The paper is supplemented by the Polish translation of the fragments of the Tale of the Iron Cross (by Jan M. Wolski) with the Old Church Slavonic original.

Opis:
The article refers to a repeatedly discussed subject of the rebellion staged by John, the son of Simeon I of Bulgaria, against Peter his (?)step-brother. The author of the study has reanalysed sources on the plot for motives of  the conspiracy, its scope,  attitude of the Byzantine Empire towards the rebellion and John’s fate after the year 928. The conspiracy has been concluded to have primarily been an aspect of the struggle for power amongst the successors of Simeon. which is not supposed to have been instigated by Byzantium in any way.

Opis:
Byzantine historians tied Peter primarily with the establishment of the lasting peace with the Empire in 927. In the sources that present the events from before the reign of the emperor Nikephor Phokas (963-969), when the relations between both states deteriorated, Peter is commonly portrayed as a peacemaker, a deeply religious man, accepting of the Byzantine way of understanding the role of the ruler in religious matters. However, Byzantine authors point out that Peter was able to successfully secure his position and ruthlessly deal with his enemies. The sources describing the events from the last years of his reign portray him as a prideful person, daring to stand up against the Byzantine basileÚj, and who gets rightfully and severely punished for his actions. It should be noted that most often the Byzantine authors did not describe their attitude towards Peter, and did not judge him directly. This results in the reader having to build the image of the Bulgarian ruler himself, based on how the sources describe the events concerning his reign.
