Opis:
The aim of this study is to review the available literature for factors affecting a basketball throw and the stabilization of the trunk. Searching for the most important elements which ought to be improved during training to increase the effectiveness of a throw and those which condition the correct stabilization of the trunk. The obtained results, after analyzing the literature, show that it is not possible to determine a single factor affecting a throw and the stabilization of the trunk. There are many factors that influence each other and, therefore, must be trained as one. There are biomechanical relationships between the effectiveness of making a throw, the positioning of the limbs, the trunk and the trajectory of the ball. It is important to mention the role of a factor outside biomechanics, such as the player’s psyche. Muscles have the greatest impact on stabilization. Muscle function would not be possible without proper control by the nervous system The conclusion section shows a large number of interacting factors responsible for the quality and effectiveness of the throw as well as for the stabilization of the trunk. This allows better planning and conducting of basketball training aimed at improving technique and throw effectiveness.

Objective: The aim of this study was to verify the influence of a specific exercise program on the strength and resistance levels of lumbar flexors and extensors in warehouse workers. Materials and Methods: The population used in this randomized controlled trial included 557 warehouse male workers from a food distribution company in Oporto/Portugal. Upon the application of the selection criteria, 98 workers deemed eligible were randomized in two groups: 57 were assigned to the intervention group and 41 to the control group. The intervention included 9 easily-executed exercises to promote stretching and strengthening of the lumbar region, to be executed daily, at the beginning of the working time, at the company facilities and lasting 8’. Trunk muscles’ voluntary strength and resistance were measured using an isometric electronic dynamometer (Globus Ergometer, Globus, Codigné, Italy) at baseline and eleven months after implementing the exercise program. The data was analyzed using SPSS®, version 17.0. Results: After implementation of the exercise program, in the intervention group, all variables increased, significant differences were observed as for the muscle strength and resistance values (p = 0.014 and p = 0.006, respectively), as well as in the ratio extensors/flexors (p = 0.037). In the control group, all variables decreased, with a statistically significant decrease of the trunk flexors strength level (p = 0.009). Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that a specific exercise intervention program can increase trunk extensors strength and resistance.

Introduction: Isometric and isokinetic dynamometers are mainly used for assessment of strength and endurance of core muscles. However, muscle power represents a more appropriate variable for evaluating of athlete performance that involve dynamic movements of the trunk. This study estimates test-retest reliability of trunk rotational power and velocity over a 1-week interval using the FiTRO Torso Isoinertial Dynamometer. Material and Methods: A group of 32 physically active men performed 5 trunk rotations to each side while seated with a barbell of 1 kg or 20 kg placed on their shoulders. Results: Results showed that assessment of peak and mean velocity in the acceleration phase of trunk rotations with 1 kg provides reliable results (ICC = 0.94 and 0.92 respectively, SEM = 7.0% and 7.3% respectively). However, peak and mean values of velocity and power obtained during trunk rotations with a weight of 20 kg should be interpreted with caution (ICC < 0.80, SEM > 10%). Conclusions: Such an assessment of trunk rotational power and velocity can be used in practice, however with a limitation of performing trunk rotations in a seated position and using lower loads.

Described bennettitalean fossil has been found as redeposited in Jankowice near Zator. It is a fragment of silicified trunk with remains of leaves petioles and strobili. Characteristic triangular sections of petioles bases with 4–5 ribs, which used to form gutters while the plant was alive, can be seen on the surface of the trunk. In the axil of the leaves strobili were present. Long barren scales in spiral layout can be seen on the axis of a strobile. This build of the specimen resembles the Monanthesia genus, species M. magnifica from the Upper Cretaceous of New Mexico, USA described by Delevoryas in 1959. This is the first specimen of the Monanthesia genus in Poland. Until now only a few of bennettitalean trunks are known from Poland; they are, however, of the Cycadeoidea genus.

Purpose: Pregnancy is characterized by many musculoskeletal changes that affect daily living activities and walking. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of pregnancy on pelvic and trunk kinematics, and their relationship during the three pregnancy trimesters. Methods: Three-dimensional pelvis and trunk motions were measured using Qualisys Gait Analysis System in the first, second and third trimesters of pregnancy. The maximum anterior pelvic tilt and maximum trunk flexion during stance phase, pelvic tilt, obliquity and rotation, as well as trunk flexion-extension, lateral bending and rotation were measured. Results: Repeated-measures analysis of variance showed a significant increase in the maximum anterior pelvic tilt during stance phase (p=0.005), and a significant decrease in the pelvic obliquity (p=0.011), maximum trunk flexion during stance phase (p=0.0006), trunk lateral bending (p=0.005) and trunk rotation (p=0.004). A significant negative correlation was found between maximum anterior pelvic tilt and maximum trunk flexion in the first (r=-0.72, p=0.008), second (r=-0.61, p=0.03), and third (r=-0.61,p=0.03) trimesters of pregnancy. Also, there was a significant positive correlation found between pelvic obliquity and trunk lateral bending in the first (r=0.76, p=0.04), second (r=0.59, p=0.04), and third (r=0.59, p=0.04) trimesters of pregnancy. Conclusions: The pregnant women walk with an increased maximum anterior pelvic tilt, a decreased maximum trunk flexion, a decreased pelvic obliquity, as well as a decreased trunk lateral bending and rotation. Pregnancy does not affect the relationship between pelvis and trunk motions.

Background: The study aimed to evaluate the angle of trunk rotation (ATR) and symmetry of lower limb loading in professional musicians. Material and Methods: A total of 60 instrumentalists were examined: cellists, violinists and musicians playing wind instruments. The scoliometer examination was used to assess trunk asymmetry. The angle of trunk rotation was measured at segment: Th1–Th4, Th5–Th12, and Th12–L4. The maximum value (ATR max) and the sum of three rotations (STR) were calculated. Two scales were used to assess the symmetry of lower limb loading. Loading symmetry index (LSI) of the lower limb was calculated. Results: Violinists have the highest mean values of ATR, ATR max, STR and LSI and musicians playing wind instruments have the lowest mean values. In the group of violinists and musicians playing wind instruments, a positive correlation was found between playing experience and ATR Th1–Th4. Conclusions: The body position during playing violin and cello may increase the angle of trunk rotation and the lower limb loading’s asymmetry. Med Pr. 2022;73(2):85–93

This study investigates changes in lumbar erector spinae (LES) muscle endurance, perceived low-back pain (LBP), and perceived exercise fatigue in older adults, and analyzes the trends of these changes during a 5-week lumbar exercise. Sixteen older adults with LBP were equally and randomly divided into two groups: the experimental group with incline-standing and the control group with the levelstanding positions. They were separately treated with lumbar exercise tasks and 10 seconds of muscle endurance tests using surface electromyography (sEMG). There was a trend of changes in both groups. The exercise tasks led to increase LES muscle endurance in the experimental group (53.7%) and the control group (45.4%) and decrease perceived LBP score significantly with the incline-standing position. There was no significant difference between the two groups in perceived exercise fatigue (p>0.05). Trunk flexion and extension with an incline-standing position can be an effective method to increase LES muscle endurance and reduce LBP in older adults.

Opis:
This study deals with a gap between science and practice in the testing of core stability and strength and presents our approach to solving this issue. Typical core stability tests require the subject to maintain a neutral spinal posture while under load in a quadrupedal or supine position and assess the endurance of global core muscles. However, most of these non-dynamometric tests have been developed for use in clinical and research settings. A suitable alternative represents torsional tests performed under stable or unstable conditions and instrumented tests in the form of trunk repositioning and load release tasks. Core strength is measured in terms of how much weight can be lifted, how many repetitions can be performed, or how long a neutral stable position can be maintained. In the laboratory, isometric and isokinetic dynamometers are frequently used. Isometric strength measurements are usually recommended as a standard for lifting tasks. However, such measurements underestimate the loads on the spine during dynamic movement. A deadlift to high pull exercise that involves working major muscle groups in the upper and lower body may best simulate the demands of jobs comprising of lifting tasks. Furthermore, isokinetic loading does not occur in daily human activities and is not specific to the requirements of sports. Given that rotational power is a better predictor of athlete performance, the test adapted from the wood chop exercise on a weight stack machine may provide conditions imposed by sports. One can also use a system that allows evaluation of muscle power during seated or standing trunk rotations with a barbell placed on the shoulders. These tests utilizing portable diagnostic systems may be implemented in functional diagnostics for athletes and sedentary or manual workers whose activities involve lifting tasks or trunk rotations under unloading or loading conditions; so complementing existing testing methods.

The paper presents the results of lubricating properties tests of Marinol RG 1240 motor oil used in trunk piston marine diesel engines and modified by chemical interaction aftermarket additives – Motor Life Professional and Mind. The test results were collected by means of a four-ball extreme pressure tester T-02 according to Polish Norm PN-76/C-04147. The following lubricating properties parameters were determined: weld load Pz, maximum nonseizure load Pn, seizure load Pt, load wear index Ih and load limit of wear Goz. Investigations showed that tested chemical interaction aftermarket additives improve load wear index Ih, and seizure load Pt (in case of Motor Life Professional), simultaneously impair maximum non-seizure load Pn. Weld load Pz remains on the same level. But the load limit of wear Goz which characterises the wear resistance in extremely hard working conditions increases considerably- 542% for tested oil with the addition of 5% by volume of Motor Life Professional and 520% with the addition of 5% by volume of Mind additive. These results indicates that tested aftermarket additives can form additional boundary layer (independent of lubricating oil boundary layer) which activates in extreme working conditions (very high temperatures and loads) of the sliding node elements. That layer could protect machines elements against seizure. In authors opinion, modifying of motor oils (provided with antiwear and antiseizure additives by the manufacturer) by chemical interaction aftermarket additives can increase durability and reliability of the machine elements especially in hard working condition for example frequent starts and load changes, overloads, operation in polluted atmosphere (transport, mining, building engineering etc.).

Trunk orthosis affects trunk by a corrective-pressure mode with an objective to correct deformities (e.g. scoliosis). The effectiveness of this function depends on various factors, i.e. correct orthosis manufacture, correct application to patients and regular pressure corrective effect control. All these factors can be monitored by a system for measurement and evaluation of the contact pressure between the instrument and trunk in a real time and also by a so called “off line” system data recording. Presented article describes the application of made-to-measure sensor system TACTILUS (Sensor Products, USA) in different regimes (ambulance – A, home – H, combined – HA and multi-sensory ambulance – MA regime), testing of chosen static and dynamic matrix tactile sensor (MTS) parameters and results of the testing application between orthosis and patients' trunks.

Lifting is known to be a major reason for musculoskeletal injuries. In this way, lifting has a crucial effect on human musculoskeletal system and intensity of this impact depends slightly on the selection of techniques. Underlying mechanisms by which trunk muscles are executed during performing lifting are central to biomechanical study of lifting techniques. In the current study, the trunk muscular control mechanisms of lifting are investigated using the synergetic control analysis. Non-negative matrix factorization has been used to extract trunk muscles synergies from their activities – which are computed by a previously validated musculoskeletal model – during different lifting techniques aimed to investigate motor control strategies. Three lifting techniques are considered; stoop, squat and semi-squat. Three synergies account for variety among muscle activation of trunk muscles with related VAF (Variability Account For) of over 95%. Trunk muscle synergy weightings and related time-varying coefficients are calculated for each kind of lifting techniques considering three synergies. Paired correlation coefficients between muscle synergies are all greater than 0.91 (P < 0.05) suggesting that trunk muscle synergies are similar for examined techniques in spite of their kinematic diversity. This similarity can be a result of their common ultimate goal. The acquired results also elucidate the mechanisms of muscle activation patterns that can be exploited in future studies and ergonomic interventions.
