Opis:
Genome polyploidisation plays a special role in the progress of crop improvement in agriculture. Duplication of the entire genome is associated with significant phenotypic changes in plants, which most often lead to an increase in production at an unchanged level of input. Triploid hop genotypes are distinguished from diploids by their higher yielding potential, increased alpha-acid content and absence of seeds. For this reason, triploid hop cones are an extremely useful raw material for the brewing industry. Studies on the polyploidisation of hop genomes were initiated by Dark in 1948. In the 1950s, American researchers Neve and Farrar made an important contribution to hop triploid breeding. A significant improvement in yield per unit area and in the quality of hop raw material was brought about by the release of aromatic triploid cultivars: Willamette and Columbia to hop farmers by Haunold et al. in 1977. The development of a method for the induction of tetraploid hops using colchicine in in vitro cultures has resulted in a number of valuable high alpha as well as aromatic triploid hop cultivars being obtained in New Zealand. As a result of the breeding work carried out in Slovenia in the 1990s, an array of triploid cultivars was obtained, the introduction of which resulted in a significant increase in the cultivation area of aromatic cultivars in this country. Currently, breeding work aimed at obtaining super alpha and aromatic triploid hop cultivars is being carried out in Poland at the Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation ? State Research Institute.

Opis:
Breeding scientists have given extensive attention to triploids in trees because of their importance to forestry. Consequently, creating and breeding triploids of good quality has become one of purposes of tree breeding. We chose two autotetraploids (Betula platyphylla, named Q10 and Q65) as female parents and eight hybrid diploids (B. platyphylla × B. pendula, named F1 – F8) as male parents to obtain progenies through controllable pollination, resulting in triploid progenies. Germination rate and germination energy of triploid seeds of Q65 were significantly higher (P < 0.01) than in triploid seed s of Q10. Triploid families with Q65 as female parent had a large quantity of saplings, whereas triploid families with Q10 as female parent had a small quantity of saplings. Triploid families with Q65 as female parent were generally superior in base diameter and height to base diameter ratio when compared to a diploid family. Q65×F3 was preliminarily recognized as the superior family. These results demonstrate that the female parent has a major influence on triploid progenies, although the male parent also has a small influence. The results provided a reference to build seed orchards of triploid birch trees, choose tetraploids as female parents and forecast triploid families of good quality.

Opis:
Bioaccumulation of three heavy metals (Cd, Pb, and Ni) at the second cultivation year of Miscanthus sinenis (2 diploid genotypes) and Miscanthus sinensis x gigantheus (3 triploid genotypes) was examined on objects with no fertilization and with NPK nutrition in five dates. Higher mean contents of analyzed heavy metals in triploid than diploid genotypes biomass was found. Mineral nutrition significantly affected the cadmium level in diploid genotypes biomass as well as nickel in all studied genotypes. The highest cadmium concentration was recorded in Miscanthus biomass at the beginning of June, lead - at the beginning of September and October, whereas nickel - at the beginning of July.
Badano bioakumulację trzech metali ciężkich (Cd, Pb i Ni) w drugim roku uprawy trawy Miscanthus sinenis (2 genotypy diploidalne) i Miscanthus sinemis x gigantheus (3 genotypy triploidalne) na obiektach bez nawożenia i nawożonych mineralnie NPK, w pięciu terminach. Stwierdzono największą zawartość Cd w biomasie miskanta w pierwszej dekadzie czerwca, Pb w pierwszej dekadzie września i października, a Ni w pierwszej dekadzie lipca.

Opis:
Triploid viviparous onions [Allium × cornutum Clementi ex Visiani 1842, syn Allium cepa L. var. viviparum Metzg. (ALEF.), auct.] (2n = 3x = 24), are known in some countries only as rare relict crops. In other parts of the world they are still traditionally or even commercially cultivated. In previous cytogenetic studies of the Croatian triploid viviparous onion Ljutika, Giemsa C-banding, chromosome pairing analysis during meiosis, and genomic hybridization in situ indicated a complex hybrid with highly heterozygous karyotype structure, with possible triparental genome organization. This study continues an analysis of the karyotype structure of Ljutika. Staining with fluorochromes CMA3 (Chromomycin A3) and DAPI (4,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole) confirmed previous results from Giemsa C-banding and revealed GC-rich heterochromatic regions associated mainly with chromosome ends and nucleolus organizing regions (NORs), and only a few interstitial bands. FISH mapping of the ribosomal 18S-5.8S-26S genes revealed two major rDNA signals on the short arms of two subtelocentric satellite chromosomes in almost all metaphase plates of Ljutika. The largest subtelocentric chromosome lacked rDNA signals. A significantly smaller rDNA signal was occasionally located on one small submetacentric chromosome. These results are in agreement with previously published results from identification of NORs by silverstaining technique, which confirmed a maximum three nucleoli in interphase nuclei. We discuss the molecular mechanisms underlying rearrangements and activity of ribosomal genes in the triploid karyotype.
