Opis:
The paper compares the properties of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) wood from stands growing in the lower and upper subalpine forest zone in terms of the tree−ring width, the share of latewood and the wood density. The investigation concerned material originating from plots established within the boundaries of the south−western incidence of spruce in Poland. Plots were located in the Sudety Mts. and in the Carpathians (tab. 1). On each plot fifteen Norway spruces were chosen and increment cores were sampled using the Pressler borer. The surface of the cores was smoothed and the tree−ring width was measured. The latewood zones were determined and the share of latewood was calculated. Then, the cores were divided into 2 cm sections, for which the relative wood density was determined. Tree−rings were wider in trees growing in the lower when compared with those from the upper subalpine forest zone (tab. 2). Weak negative correlation was revealed between the elevation and the tree−ring width (r=–0.308). The latewood share was slightly higher in trees from the upper than those from the lower subalpine forest zone (tab. 2). However, no statistically significant correlation between the latewood share and elevation was recorded. The wood density was slightly lower in trees from the lower than those from the upper subalpine forest zone (tab. 2), but the difference was not statistically significant. The correlation between the wood density and the elevation turned out to be insignificant.

The main aim of this study was to analyze the variability of width as well as content of stable oxygen and carbon isotopes, and radiocarbon in Pinus sylvestris L. tree rings. Analysed Scots pine stand grew on the fresh mixed coniferous forest habitat type on site located in the vicinity of the power plant in Łaziska Górne (southern Poland). The combined usage of tree ring width and isotopic data allowed to identify how investigated trees have adapted to the pollution. Strong increase of industrial pollution emission was noted on the investigated site between 1960s and 1980s. During that time, the trees reduced their radial incement and the heterogeneity of their reaction increased, whereas their sensitivity to short−term impulses to changes in the environment conditions weakened. We observed depletion rates of 14C and δ13C concentration in α−cellulose related to the CO2 emission into the atmosphere in the processes associated with the fossil fuels combustion. Prior to 2000, a decrease in stomatal conductivity was associated with a minor changes in the net photosynthesis rate and that elevated CO2 increased intrinsic water use efficiency (approximately by 40%).

Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine the influence of stand density index on the tree−ring width, latewood proportion and wood density for Norway spruce. Study sites were located as follows: 12 within the north−eastern species range in Poland, 7 in the south−western range, in the Sudety Mts., and 9 in the Carpathians (southern range). Clustering stands according to their stand density index, 10 data groups were established: stand density index values from 0.3 to 1.2. The study plots were 100×100 m squares. On each plot 15 trees were chosen and increment cores were sampled using the Pressler borer. The smoothed cores served for measuring the width of annual rings, latewood zones and the share of latewood as well as for determination of relative wood density. The performed analyses indicate that mean tree−ring width was the highest in trees from stands with density index from 0.3 to 0.8 (with the exception of 0.7), whereas the it was gradually decreasing in stands with index higher than 0.9. The statistically significant differences between the analyzed stands were observed (p<0.0001). The analysis of the influence of stand density index and the width of annual rings revealed significant, negative weak correlation (r=–0.242, p<0.001). In turn, the latewood proportion was the highest in trees from stands characterised by the highest stand density index and the lowest in trees from stands with the lowest one. The differences between analyzed groups of stands were statistically significant (p<0.0001), as well as the correlation which was significant, positive and weak (r=0.269, p<0.001). Wood density was the highest in trees from stands with the highest stand density index (1.1 – 363 kg/m3 i 1.2 – 365 kg/m3) as well as in those from stands characterised by 0.7 density index (369 kg/m3). Significant differences were observed (p<0.0001) only between stand density index 0.3−0.7 and 0.7−0.8. Significant correlation was not observed.

Opis:
The intermediate cuttings have an important impact on the stand structure and productivity. Choosing the right method of the treatment performance is the decision, which is fundamental in shaping tree stands stability. The radial increment, apart from the natural growth potential of particular species, is influenced by many abiotic, biotic and anthropogenic factors, among which one can distinguish those that influence it directly, e.g. thinning. The study objective was to determine the effect of silvicultural treatments on the increment reaction of oak (Quercus sp.) stands in the Międzyrzec Forest District (eastern Poland). The empirical material was collected in six forest stands located in the Witoroż forest range. In each stand we cored 10 dominant and co−dominant trees (representing 1st and 2nd Kraft’s biosocial classes). After the measurements of the tree−ring widths and the synchronization of incremental series, the raw and standard chronologies were elaborated for each stand. In total, we analysed 8 treatments: six early and one late selection thinnings, and one late salvage thinning (tab. 1). For each treatment, three− and five−years’ value of mean tree−ring width was calculated for the period before and after the cut. Additionally, we calculated the incremental response parameters: recovery (Rc), resilience (Rs) and resistance (Rt) indices. For the majority of the analysed treatments, the cuts resulted in an increase in average tree−ring width both in the 3−, and 5−years perspective. However, statistically significant changes in this parameter occurred only in a few cases (fig. 2). The average values of incremental response indicators show that the investigated oak stands are characterized by a significant adaptive capacity and a rapid recovery of incremental capacity in the analysed time spans. At the same time, the low values of Rt index suggest that their growth resistance to disturbance caused by the thinning is rather low. The age of the stand at the time of the treatment significantly affected the incremental response parameters of the examined oaks. The older the stand, the incremental response was less intense.

Tree−ring analysis of pine stands living under the influence of industry in south−eastern part of Silesia−Krakow Upland was performed for the last years. Now the new transect was added in the Olkusz region. Previous studies showed the distinct relationship between number of trees with observed reductions and distance from main source of pollution it this region. On the sites localised nearest to zinc−works "Bolesław" the value and the duration of reduction periods were the biggest. On the sites of new transect (OL VI) situated to the north from site OL 15, the influence of zinc−works is rather uncertain. Because of the time of occurrence and the distance form zinc−work, the reductions observed here seem to be the reaction to the other factor – perhaps the local source of pollution. To explain this matter further studies in this region should be done.

Tree−ring analysis has been used to evaluate the influence of industrial pollution on Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) growing in the Tarnobrzeg region. 237 samples were taken from stands located in two profiles to picture dependence of health conditions of trees on distance from the emitter. The Tarnobrzeg Sulphur Works was the main source of pollution in that region. Factories in Mielec and Nowa Dęba as well as the Połaniec Power Plant could be additional sources of emission. Response of trees to anthropogenic stress was clearly visible in the years 1970−1990, when growth reductions occurred at the majority of the investigated trees. At the beginning of 1990s the decreasing trend stopped and wider tree−rings could be observed.

Opis:
Scots pine is the most common tree species in Poland with the share in the species structure of Polish forests exceeding 58%. The most dangerous pathogen of this species is Phellinus pini (Brot.) Pilát), which causes the white pocket rot (also called red ring rot) of pine heartwood. It is estimated that as a result of the fungus’s activity, about 8% of annually harvested pine stems is damaged and worthless. As the Ph. pini damages only heartwood, it is often recognized that its occurrence has no influence on the tree’s physiology. As it is still unknown whether the presence of this fungus also does not affect the cambium responsible for the radial growth. We carried out studies in Scots pine stands located in the Radziwiłłów Forest District (central Poland). We investigated trees from 5th and 7th age classes (Biała Góra and Budy Stare forests, respectively). A total of 60 trees were sampled (30 per site). Half of them were specimens showing advanced symptoms of sickness, while the others were healthy specimens with no evidence of infection. From each tree we took one increment core and measured the tree−ring widths. Average tree−ring width was in case of healthy trees significantly higher than for sick trees. The research showed a significant, even of a dozen percent, reduction in the annual increment of infected trees in relation to healthy trees growing on the same site. Presumably, unidentified chemicals secreted to the cambium by the growing mycelium of Ph. pini may be responsible for this. It also seems that this relationship is progressing with the growing age of tree stands and is particularly visible in old stands, for example in reserves. Thus, Ph. pini could be one of the factors limiting the natural age of pine trees and accelerating their dieback. We also found that the growth of trees affected by the disease is influenced by a factor other than climatic, disturbing the natural rhythm of their radial increments. This factor is most likely the presence of mycelium of Ph. pini in the wood.

The study makes an attempt to analyse the width of annual rings, the width of the latewood zone and the proportion of the latewood within juvenile wood along trunks of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) trees and to verify the hypothesis about the heterogeneous properties of juvenile wood in a single trunk. It was found that the above-mentioned macrostructural elements of wood structure showed a curvilinear correlation with the height of measurement points along the tree trunk. As the distance from the base of trunk increased, the width of the annual ring and the width of the latewood zone decreased, while the proportion of the latewood increased. These types of changes can affect positively physical and mechanical properties of wood tissue. It can be assumed that there is a mechanism which modifies properties of juvenile wood causing axial diversification of the analysed type of wood tissue. It is probable that axial heterogeneity results in advantageous changes in the mechanics of the tree trunk.

The air temperatures recorded at Warsaw-Okęcie in 1951-2010 were compared with forecasts for the period 1980-2010 and 1991-2010, i.e. 31 and 20 years ahead. Accurate predictions of air temperatures in Warsaw in 1980-2010 were calculated using the cycles identified by applying the sinusoidal regression method to a series of monitoring results obtained in Warsaw between 1779 and 1979. The high accuracy of these forecasts is the result of a similar progression of measured and forecast values over a number of years. The prediction of climate change in the Northern Hemisphere for example, caused by interference of long solar radiation cycles as well as variations in the concentrations of the δ18O oxygen isotope in the Arctic ice cores, requires a larger series of data points.

Opis:
In the central part of the Bolshoy Solovetsky Island, in the same type of growing conditions, two plots were created in 1988: the first consisted of twisted pine (Pinus contorta Loud. var. latifolia S. Wats) crops and the second one was of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.). The aim of the study was to establish the morphological parameters of the twisted pine and its growth in the conditions of the Bolshoy Solovetsky Island in comparison with the native species P. sylvestris L. Also, we aimed to identify the features of P. contorta var. latifolia and determine the possibility and necessity of further introduction of the species. The preservation of the twisted pine and scots pine cultures was determined. Accounting trees were selected (62 and 31 trees, respectively), in which morphometric indicators were measured. Wood samples (cores) were taken from them with an age drill to measure radial growth. The radial increment was measured using the MBS-9 microscope and the Lintab device. To measure the increase in height, six medium-sized model trees were cut down. According to the taxation indicators, the two types differed slightly and the differences were most often unreliable. The average height of the twisted pine trees was significantly higher compared to that of Scots pine. The thickness of the bark varied; on average, at the age of 18, it was 1.35 ± 0.038 mm for twisted pine and 1.86 ± 0.095 for Scots pine, that is, the native pine bark was 38% thicker. Typical for twisted pine were a significant number of pathologies noted in 22% of the studied trees. Twisted pine was distinguished by a stronger development of the assimilation apparatus: the number of branches of the first order, the number of branches in the whorl, the life span of needles. An increase in radius (the width of the annual ring) was observed at 14–15 years, and then with age, the value decreased in twisted pine and remained at a consistently high level in Scots pine. The width of the late zone of the annual ring was 12% in Scots pine and 14% in twisted pine; but at a young age, the late wood in twisted pine was very small. The increase in height of the twisted pine was on average less than that of Scots pine. The dependence of the trunk volume on the diameter was almost identical in both species.

The work assesses the reliability and usefulness of the age table developed in the 1980s by Longin Majdecki. The table is commonly used by landscape architects in studies regarding the revalorisation of historic parks. In the first part, the ages of two linden species (Tilia cordata and T. platyphyllos ) were assessed using a resistograph and compared with data from Majdecki's table. Age curves were used for comparison. In the second part, the ages of silver birch (Betula pendula) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) were compared with the results obtained from the table using a resistograph and an increment borer. It was found that for the purposes of park revalorisation, Majdecki's table is undoubtedly useful, although its limitations stem from the high variability of radial increments among individual trees.
