Opis:
The paper presents research on dbh, height and biosocial structure of trees growing close to strip roads. Also, the length and height of tree crown were analysed. The studies comprised the trees localised along the strip roads as well as those growing 3 and 6 m away. The strip roads were cut 6 years before in the course of an early thinning in a pine stand. The thinning was conducted in three technological variants, which differed, among other things, in the width of the strip roads. The results confirmed the statistical significance of difference among some of the investigated traits.

Opis:
The effects of drought stress, stress by increased nitrogen depositions and the combined effect of the two stress factors on the growth of Norway spruce Picea abies (L.) Karst. were studied in two stands. The drought stress was induced by reducing atmospheric precipitations by 60% and the increased nitrogen depositions were simulated by repeated applications of ammonium sulphate at a rate corresponding to 100 kg N ha–1 year–1. All stress factors under study affected the height increment of the above-ground part, the length and colour of needles, and the biomass, vertical distribution, functionality and mycorrhizal infection of fine roots. The root system responded to the simulated stresses right from the the very first year of their action, exhibiting a greater damage than the above-ground part of the plant. Drought acted as a stress factor stronger than the nitrogen depositions themselves. The strongest impact was recorded in the simultaneous influence of the stress factors.

Opis:
Accumulation of proline is a defense mechanism against external stress conditions, preventing damage to the structure and function of cells and improving plant development processes, such as germination. The purpose of this study was to investigate proline treatment as a means of improving the germination and development of Norway spruce seedlings. The effect of exogenous proline has been studied in three stages of initial plant development. The collected seeds were soaked in water or 8 mM proline solution and placed on the germinators. The germination capacity and the mean germination time were determined. Seedlings with radicles >10 mm were transferred to the sand-peat substrate at a constant temperature of 20 °C. Seedlings at 3 subsequent developmental stages (S1 – germinated seeds with radicles > 3 mm; S2 – seedlings with radicles >10 mm; S3 – established seedlings grown for 90 days) were examined for the oxygen consumption rate, total antioxidant capacity, hydrogen peroxide level, malondialdehyde level and intracellular proline content. Proline treatment was conducive to lowering the levels of hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde at stage S1. At the subsequent stages of development, the levels of hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde increased, and at the S3 stage, there was also a marked increase in total antioxidant capacity. At stage S3, the seedlings of the proline treatment were characterized by a lower total mass, and the response to exogenous proline was stronger in the root tissues than in the leaves. The oxygen consumption rate was higher for the proline treatment at all stages of development. Seedlings at the analyzed stages of establishment differed in response to proline treatment. Exogenous proline had some beneficial effects during the first phase of germination by reducing the level of hydrogen peroxide and improving the condition of lipid membranes. In the subsequent stages of seedling development, in response to the same concentration of proline solution, undesirable effects, such as an increase in hydrogen peroxide levels and damage to cytoplasmic membranes, were observed. Optimal concentrations of exogenous proline should be determined prior to commercial use of proline treatment to improve plant stress tolerance.

Opis:
Observations of Japanese pagoda trees indicate that they undergo a full cycle of vegetative and generative development without self-renovation. The aim of this study was to obtain a successive media protocol propagation of Japanese pagoda tree by in vitro cultures. The effects of growth regulators were studied with reference to primary regeneration, shoot multiplication and rooting. As explants source were used the part of shoot of 90-year-oldtree. Explants were placed on MS (Murashige and Skoog 1962) basal medium with the addition of 6-benzylaminopurine – BAP (1.0–2.0 mg dm-3), thidiazuron – TDZ (0.1–0.3 mg dm-3) and indole-3-acetic acid – IAA (0.5–1.0 mg dm-3). BAP was the growth regulator which significantly increased shoot regeneration on initial explants. TDZ in turn, inhibited the formation of adventitious shoots and caused the explants which had been placed on the medium to die. The multiplication of the Japanese pagoda tree by in vitro cultures should be conducted on MS media with the addition of 0.5 mg dm-3 BAP, and they should be rooted on media with the addition of 0.3 mg dm-3 indole-3-butyric acid – IBA. It seems, that devising an efficient method of Japanese pagoda tree micropropagation is realistic.

Opis:
The main goal of this review was to characterize ecological consequences of growing trees at variable stand densities. We found that the majority of studies were focused on biometry, productivity and mortality of trees, and wood quality and its economic value, while the influence of stand density on biomass allocation, abiotic and biotic factors, chemistry of different tree organs, diversity and biomass of understory plants, ecophysiology of trees and microclimate conditions (e.g. temperature, humidity, light conditions, etc.) were only occasionally addressed. Stand growth and development trajectories are clearly modified by stand density, however the strength of influence depends on the phase of stand development. Lower seedling densities in nursery conditions lead to increases in their height and diameter, thus influencing seedling quality used in afforestation. The positive influence of higher density on diameter and height of trees in younger stages of stand development may be a result of higher probability of seedlings being planted in more favorable microhabitats, improvement of microclimate conditions, earlier crown closure that reduces interspecific competition for nutrient and water resources. Moreover, stand density clearly influences branch diameter and length, and thus knot size. Higher stand density results in earlier crown closure and higher tree mortality, leading to vertical and horizontal changes in stand structure (DBH, height and crown dimensions of trees). In the denser stands slender and flexible trees with small, narrow crowns dominate, and most of the trees belong to the 3rd class according to Kraft' classification of tree social positions in the stand. The influence of stand density on stand structure may lead to changes in biomass partitioning and thus merchantable wood production and nutrient retention in particular tree organs.

The discovery of conifer somatic embryogenesis (SE) and the subsequent development of SE protocols for a range of genera and species have opened new research opportunities to forest biotechnologists and a means towards mass clonal propagation for the forest industry. This paper provides a general description of the conifer SE process, followed by a review of protocols developed specifically for several conifer species in the Pinaceae family for which production of somatic trees has been demonstrated. Additionally, future research needs, including approaches for developing markers to optimize SE process and the production of high quality embryos, are discussed.

In this paper we focus on anatomic structure of the outer cellular layers of the fruit of Sorbus torminalis. We have confirmed the theory of existing of multilayered epidermis providing developmental, histogenetic evidence. The studies were made from blooming time (ovules) to fully ripen fruits, using various histological techniques and microscope types. The multilayered epidermis is derived from successive tangential divisions of cells of initially single-layered epidermis commencing about two weeks after full bloom. The subsequent epidermal layers result from division of cells of epidermal meristem. The mature fruits – about 12 weeks after full bloom – are covered with four – to five-layered epidermis; each layer with its own cuticle. The lenticels developed beneath stomata from phellogen which is not in continuity with the epidermal meristem. Measurements of cuticular membranes thicknesses during development were also made.

Opis:
Experiments on somatic embryogenesis in selected spruce, fir and larch species were performed to determine if this method of micropropagation enables production of quality seedlings for forest nurseries. High frequencies of embryogenic callus in spruce (23-31%) and fir (29%) were achieved when mature zygotic embryos were used as explants, while in larches (36%) only when megagametophytes (endosperms with immature embryos) were used. The possibility of somatic embryogenesis initiation also from somatic embryos (resulting in secondary and third generation of embryogenic callus) indicate high efficiency of this method of micropropagation. The best results at all stages of somatic embryogenesis (good proliferation of embryogenic callus, high rate of embryo regeneration and their survival) were obtained for Norway spruce, European larch and some hybrid larches.

From among three stands, situated in the lower mountain zone, and representing the association Dentario-glandulosae Fagetum, the Łopuszna I stand, being in the growing up stage and phase of selection forest, reached the highest increment (8.5 m3/ha/year, i.e. 1.3% of actual stand volume/ha measured at the end of the control period). Stands, Łopuszna II, being in the stage of an intensive break-up, and Łopuszna III, being in the stage of an initial break-up, reached smaller increments (5.4 and 6.3 m3/ha/year respectively, i.e. each 0.9% of actual stand volume/ha). The greatest tree mortality occurred in stands Łopuszna II and III (14.1 and 10.5 m3/ha/year respectively), and the smallest in the stand Łopuszna I (4.8 m3/ha/year). The knowledge about the value of mortality, recruitment, and increment, expressed in the number of trees and in volume units, may greatly help in planning the amount of cut which would secure sustainability of the forest ecosystem in the layer of trees in the economic as well as in the protection forests, under similar stand and site conditions, managed by the selection cutting permitting to realize the conception of a close-to-nature silviculture.

The study makes an attempt to analyse the width of annual rings, the width of the latewood zone and the proportion of the latewood within juvenile wood along trunks of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) trees and to verify the hypothesis about the heterogeneous properties of juvenile wood in a single trunk. It was found that the above-mentioned macrostructural elements of wood structure showed a curvilinear correlation with the height of measurement points along the tree trunk. As the distance from the base of trunk increased, the width of the annual ring and the width of the latewood zone decreased, while the proportion of the latewood increased. These types of changes can affect positively physical and mechanical properties of wood tissue. It can be assumed that there is a mechanism which modifies properties of juvenile wood causing axial diversification of the analysed type of wood tissue. It is probable that axial heterogeneity results in advantageous changes in the mechanics of the tree trunk.

Adventitious bud cultures were established by using buds of a selected birch clone (Betula pendula Roth.) resistant to industrial pollution. The Murashige and Skoog medium (1/2 and 1/4 MS) was used for multiplication and rooting of shoots. Aluminium was added to the medium, in the form of aluminium sulphate (50–100 mg Al dm–3), and birch culture was continued in vitro for over 12 months. The shoots developed on media with aluminium (Al+) proved to be more tolerant to aluminium and copper (added to the medium as nitrates or sulphates, at a concentration of 0.05–2.0 mM) during multiplication and rooting than those developed on media without aluminium (Al–). Rooted birch microcuttings obtained from cultures on media with aluminium (Al+) grew better in the soil from an unpolluted area (Zwierzyniec, Z) and from an area polluted by a phosphate fertilise factory (Luboń, L) than those from media without aluminium (Al–).

This study describes the effect of watering on the mycorrhizal development and growth of Scots pine seedlings in a bare root nursery. Seedlings of Scots pine, grown under nursery conditions on natural soil (loamy sand) and soil + litter, were subjected to two different watering regimes for five months. During this time, measurements of soil water potential were made. Seedlings grown in natural soil and subjected to drought conditions were of significantly greater shoot height and volume and they had one mycorrhizal morphotype more than watered seedlings. However, irrigated seedlings subjected to excessive watering possessed greater mycorrhizal colonization: 46% on natural soil and 72% on soil + litter, while non-irrigated seedlings had 36% and 67% levels of mycorrhizal colonization, respectively.

The paper examines the development of the root system (both skeletal and fine roots) in 19-year-old Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) of two provenances (from altitudes 320 m and 1100 m), growing on two plots (540 m a.s.l., lowland, modal Cambisol; 820 m a.s.l., slope, ranker podzol), by comparing 34 parameters. The results show that the root system emergence is not affected by provenance but rather by site, namely by soil type and terrain slope. At an altitude of 540 m, both provenances produced an anchoring root system of circular floor projection with a rooting depth of 80 cm, while at an altitude of 820 m they had an elliptical superficial root system with a rooting depth of 45 cm. At the higher-situated plot, the provenance from an altitude of 1100 m showed a higher biomass, vitality, and specific length of fine roots.
