Opis:: For several years, Poland has been facing the dieback of ash stands. The paper describes this phenomenon on the example of stands in the Mircze Forest District situated in the eastern regions of the country. The damage to these stands was assessed using a „stand method” that distinguishes three variants based on crown defoliation, vitality and synthetic index of tree damage being a combination of the first two criteria. Study results confirmed the poor health condition of ash stands in the Mircze Forest District.

Opis:: Basing on tree crown characteristics different variants of the damage assessment method for pine stands were distinguished. The verification of the variants was carried out in 35 stands of the Olkusz Forest District that in the past had been under strong impact of industrial emissions. Prevalence of slightly dam− aged stands was observed in the studied area. Taking into consideration a high share of non−damaged stands it was stated that the actual health status of forests in the Olkusz Forest District's is satisfactory.

Opis:: The aim of this research was to assess damage to three important forest−forming trees species in the mountains – spruce, fir and larch, and to study their increment reaction to changing environmental conditions. Research concerned forests under the management of four forest districts located in the Western Sudetes (SW Poland). Index W ranging from 0 to 3 was used for the assessment of the damage to trees based on three crown characteristics: defoliation, top−crown condition and tree vitality. Trees of damage degree 2 dominated in each of the species; dying trees (degree 3) were also found. Total share of these two degrees of damage was ca 80% for spruce, 84% for fir and 74% for larch. Analysis of increment reaction of investigated species showed their similar response to changes in the environment. The increase in the share of trees showing positive responses and the decrease in the share of negative responses in the past half century, indicate an improvement in the growth conditions of spruce, fir and larch in Western Sudetes.

Opis:: There has been a massive occurrence of aphids observed in 2001 in many Scots pine stands of the Mazovia region. This pest has been later identified as pine woolly aphid (Pineus pini L.). The result of the pest's feeding was a significant tree defoliation reaching even 80%. The article presents results of the tree health condition assessment performed in the attacked stands three years after a maximum intensity of the pine woolly aphid occurrence.
