Opis:
The cutting performance of PVD coated tools can be significantly improved by applying optimized PVD processes, film architectures, as well as appropriate pre- and post- treatments of the substrates and coated surfaces respectively. Substrate pre-treatments aim, among others, at improving the coating adhesion. In this way, lower coating loads develop during cutting leading to a decelerated wear evolution. Furthermore, the effect of various PVD process parameters and film architectures such as of adhesive interlayers, Ar+ ions bombardment, thickness distribution and multi-layer structure on the coated tool life is demonstrated. Finally, the potential to increase the wear resistance of coated tools via micro-blasting and to render sharp cutting edges mainly of small diameter tools more stable by rounding them via grinding is presented. Micro-blasting parameters such as of grain material, pressure, dry or wet etc., affect significantly the superficial coatings’ hardness and brittleness and in this way their wear behaviour. To check the effectiveness of all these methods, innovative coating's characterization procedures providing information concerning the film and substrate properties as well as adhesion are applied, thus reducing the required experimentation time.

Introduction. The paper presents epidemiology, routes of infection, forms of the disease, diagnostic and treatment methods, and prophylaxis of tick-borne encephalitis. Aim. In this paper, we present two descriptions of the cases of tick-borne encephalitis. Description of the cases. Case 1. A 60-year-old man with fever up to 39 degrees for 3 days, multi-site headache and other body aches, as well as an earstuck feeling. The day before hospitalization, there was a feeling of numbness on the right side of the face from eye level to the chin and speech distortion. Case 2. A 60-year-old patient with headaches and an increase in temperature to 39 degrees for 3 days, who, approximately, three weeks earlier was ticked by a tick in the lower parts of the back. Conclusion. It is also important for doctors to take a broader view and to make society aware of that Lyme disease is not associated only with Lyme disease. Further work is also needed towards effective treatments for Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE).

Water inflow to a salt mine usually poses a threat to the mine and sometimes even to its existence. On the other hand the healing properties of salt have been known since Antiquity and brines extracted from the mines have been used in the treatment of various diseases. The “Wieliczka” Salt Mine in southern Poland has been conducting organized rehabilitation and therapeutic activities for respiratory tract diseases for almost 200 years. This paper presents preliminary results of a study focused on pre-selection of out-of-deposit water inflows into the mine workings which show the lowest variability in yield and in chemical composition, and which can potentially be used in the health resort operated by the mine. The results indicate that brines from the WVII-16 leak are the only ones which can be taken into account when considering the use of Wieliczka brines for medicinal purposes for baths, rinses, irrigation, and at lower mineralisation levels, in liquid treatments

Opis:
The technologies associated with the use of a membrane bioreactor (MBR) are becoming one of the dynamically developing directions in the wastewater disposal system. However, a certain part of the used design of membrane units are exposed to mechanical contamination, which significantly impairs their performance. This is especially noticeable when working at wastewater treatment plants, where the required degree of preliminary cleaning from solid mechanical particles and suspended solids is not provided. The purpose of the work was to improve the process of post-treatment of urban wastewater and protect the membrane element of the installation from clogging with coarse impurities and wear, with an overestimated concentration of suspended solids. The essence of the improved membrane technology of wastewater treatment consists in the preliminary capture of heavy and suspended particles with a size of more than 0.03 microns in a hydrocyclone, followed by water treatment in a chamber of a membrane bioreactor of modern design. The operating conditions of the membranes were determined by the operating modes and parameters of the bioreactor, in particular, by the degree of formation of colloidal compounds in it, which adversely affect the permeability. The density of the initial water varied within 1.059–1.078 g/cm3, and the content of solid particles was up to 0.3 mm. The activated sludge was filtered under vacuum on a Buchner funnel through a thin layer of cotton wool and gauze. During the tests, the indicators for capturing suspended solids were 5.0–9.0 mg/dm3, whereas, when working without a hydrocyclone, they were equal to 27–30 mg/dm3. The maximum performance of the hydrocyclone is provided at an inlet pressure of 225–300 kPa, and the pressure loss in the hydrocyclone chamber is 7.9–9.0 kPa. It was established that additional preparation of waste water for the post-treatment process using a hydrocyclone increases the cleaning capacity of membrane elements by reducing the load of accumulation of coarse impurities on the membrane surface.

An important aspect of a senior's life is to be able to function independently in his or her own and family surroundings as long as possible, actively participate in social life without economic barriers. Numerous studies show that the quality of life and the biological condition of the elderly alongside nutrition are clearly dominant and have a positive effect on their functional physical fitness. In order to promote physical activity and physiological prevention among the elderly, a physiotherapeutic program was organized under the "Summer Sanatorium of Prevention of the spine pain syndrome", which was attended regularly by a group of senior citizens from the Karkonosze University of the Third Age in Jelenia Góra. The aim of the study was to compare the level of functional physical activity before and after treatment among the participants. The study was conducted among 20 women aged 60-75 years, before and after 6 weeks of treatment, which included: gymnastics for prevention of back pain syndromes, relaxation training, full spine massage, TENS electrotherapy and ultrasound in the lumbar and cervical spine. Research included; assessment of functional physical fitness by the Functional Senior Fitness Tests: „stretching behind" and "slope forward", ranges of motion within the selected joints of the spine, upper and lower limbs. The selected form of physiotherapeutic treatment improves the results obtained after test with the Functional Senior Fitness Test and influences the range of motion in the selected joints, which demonstrates that physical fitness is improved. Physical activity in the form of general-purpose gymnastics favors higher levels of functional fitness of elderly women, physical therapy and massage improves mood and makes older people more willing to participate in physio preventing programs. The conducted research proves that the developed program was optimal and showed a positive effect on the daily functional fitness of the examined persons.

Opis:
As human medicine is developing at a galloping pace, continuously offering new medical products, diagnostic methods and preventive programmes, there is almost no time gap between their creation and application in medical practice. All these biomedical achievements are primarily intended to improve public health and the patient’s quality of life and health. Hence, it is important to define potential risks, side effects, and unwanted outcomes when applying a medical product/treatment before integrating it into healthcare. Unlike any other product/treatment intended for human use, medical products/treatments require prior clinical testing on human subjects (sick or sound). The authors of this paper have restricted their scientific interest to the participant (human subject) of a clinical study as one of the core elements of a clinical investigation, representing at the same time its means and its aim. By analyzing relevant international as well as national legal rules and ethical principles of the Republic of Srpska related to the participation of humans in clinical studies, it will be concluded that the participants’ safety and right to self-determination, integrity, and autonomy manifested through their independent right to either consent or refuse to participate in a clinical study supersedes the interests of science or society. However, clinical trial-related statistical data obtained from randomly chosen healthcare institutions in the Republic of Srpska will show certain derogations from prescribed ethical policies. Considering this fact, the authors have paid special attention to thematising the ethicality of recruiting participants for a clinical study based on partial or no information related to the purpose, methods, potential risks and side effects of the investigation in the name of the greater good for humanity. Such practice has accentuated the discretionary powers of ethical review committees on the one side and the uncertainty of the right to informed consent on the other.

Ductile iron is a high-carbon-containing iron-based alloy in which the carbon, as graphite, is present in a spheroidal shape. With its good mechanical properties, ductile iron approximates the properties of steel and the cost per unit of strength compared to other materials. With suitable metallurgical treatments, we can influence its microstructure and resulting properties. Incorrect manufacturing technology and metallurgical processes give rise to casting defects and decreased mechanical properties. The contribution is devoted to measures to prevent the occurrence of defects in the casting of rope drums and to achieve the required mechanical properties of these castings. The most-common defects in these castings are micro-shrinkages in casting heat centers and unsatisfactory mechanical properties such as tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation.

Empirically supported treatments are rigorously based on experimental research. Applicable implications of these treatments are limited due to low external validity. Naturalistic research is required to increase external validity. Two methodological strategies of clinical utility evaluation of such treatments in natural settings are discussed. A proposal for client-focused research as a means of providing a framework that could potentially be used by researchers and clinicians to evaluate the effects of treatment in routine clinical practice is presented.

Today’s media disseminate a narcissistic cultivation of beauty and promote a focus mainly on appearance and satisfaction from its improvement. The human body assumes a form in the media that is often impossible to achieve without surgical intervention. When people are in frequent contact with a utopian vision of the perfect body, this can lead to many disorders in both social functioning and self-perception. In extreme cases, striving to preserve beauty and youth may lead to an addiction to aesthetic medicine treatments. It is an increasingly common phenomenon. People who are addicted to treatments improving their beauty or changing their body shapes are not aware of the problem that affects them. They lose their rational judgement and their assessment is far from the opinions of people around them and socially accepted norms. All signs of concern from others are perceived as an attack on their independence and this further deepens their sense of loneliness and isolation from society. With time, undergoing further beautifying procedures becomes the only way they know to achieve a momen-tary sense of happiness.

Celem pracy było określenie wpływu wybranych zapraw nasiennych na zdrowotność nasion traw: kostrzewy łąkowej i życicy trwałej z trzech kolejnych lat zbioru, otrzymanych od hodowców. Materiał do badań stanowiły nasiona czterech odmian kostrzewy łąkowej (Festuca pratesis) i czterech odmian życicy trwałej (Lolium perenne). Badano materiał siewny traktowany czterema zaprawami: dwie biologiczne Bioczos (ekstakt z czosnku) i Polyversum (oospory grzyba Pythium oligandrum) i dwie chemiczne Maxim (substancja aktywna: fludioksonil) i Vitavax (substancja aktywna: karboksyna i tiuram) oraz nasiona niezaprawiane, powierzchniowo odkażone podchlorynem sodu.
The aim of the study was to determine the effect of selected seed treatments on the health of grass seeds: meadow fescue and perennial ryegrass from three years of harvest, obtained from breeders. The material for the research was the seeds of four varieties of meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis) and four varieties of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne). Seed material treated with four treatments: two biological Bioczos (garlic extract) and Polyversum (oospores of the fungus Pythium oligandrum) and two chemical Maxim (fludioxonil) and Vitavax (carboxin and thiuram) and the untreated grain, surface disinfected with sodium hypochlorite. Seeds of the studied species and cultivars were colonized by both saprotrophic fungi: Alternaria alternata, Aureobasidium pullulans, Epicoccum purpurascens and Penicillium spp. as well as pathogens: Fusarium spp., Drechslera spp. and Bipolaris sorokiniana. It was found that the use of chemical treatments, especially the use of Vitavax, has a positive effect on the improvement of seed health expressed by the number of fungal colonies, including the main pathogens. However, no significant increase in the germination capacity of the tested seeds was observed.

The study explored propagation techniques of Entada rheedii Spreng., a threatened medicinal climber species with extremely hard seed coat. Propagation trials included both pre-sowing treatments of seeds for germination and clonal propagation by stem cutting. Pre-sowing treatments included (a) soaking of both cut (notched) and uncut (intact) seeds in water for 0 h, 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h and (b) immersion of intact seeds in 5% acetone solution for 5 min, 10 min, and 20 min before sowing in germination media in polybags. On the other hand, stem cutting involved treating the summer or autumn cuttings with 0%, 0.4%, and 0.8% IBA solution before rooting in non-mist propagator. Notched seeds soaked in water for 48 h showed the fastest seed germination with the highest germination percentages (73.3) and better seedling growth in terms of plant height, collar diameter, leaf number and total dry mass followed by notched seeds soaked in water for 72 h. The slowest germination and the lowest germination percentage (3.3), as well as the poorest growth performance was for intact seeds without any treatment. The highest rooting percent- age with maximum number of roots (36.6) was obtained from the summer cuttings treated with 0.4% IBA solution followed by autumn cuttings with 0.8% IBA and the lowest (43.3% and 8.3 roots) was for summer cuttings in control. The factors also dictated the survival and growth performance of rooted cuttings in the nursery conditions. The outcomes of these trials i.e., notched seeds soaking in water for 48 h will help to enhance the propagation of this valuable medicinal plant species.
