Language shift. Overview
Political correctness

Opis:
Deconstructionism teaches us, that power lies within language, or rather that power decides, what language is supposed to mean. The old question asked in Alice in Wonderland: „Who decides, what words mean?“ builds up to the discrepancy in any language between the individual speaker’s intention and his or her position in the political power hierarchy. In recent decades calls for a more humane language have arisen, giving birth to movements of political correctness in the Western hemisphere, making it an issue of globalisation being fairly paired with left-wing ideology, making everyday conversation a subject of critique, calling for normative changes in language and ultimately facing the same question everywhere: Does it in fact help? This paper will shed light on the empirical linguistic knowledge we possess on the connection between form and content, going back to De Saussure and following the discourse of language and power in an historical manner, thus taking a hard look at the theoretical background of the dynamics of power and language, building a chronology of deconstructivist theorists like Derrida, Foucault, Bourdieu, and Barthes. These theories will be paralleled with the so-called linguistic turn from its beginning to the nowadays so popular Neo-Whorfian approach. Finally the deconstructivist method will be put in contrast to what we know about the connection between language on action following John Austin, circling back to the postmodern discursive approach known in everyday life: The language policing of everyday conversations by individual speakers, representing the deconstructivist movement, comparing it to the empirical data about language and culture, the named and the unnamed, empowerment and the mechanics of language shifting that were subject to studies already more than a hundred years ago, focusing on the shift of meaning and tabooing of vocabulary, dissecting what critics of political correctness call the „euphemism treadmill“, building up to the effects of political correctness we have come to experience so far. The goal is to finally answer the question, whether language policing and the growing public attention to the use of language do have an egalitarian effect on reality.

Embedding cardiac system sensing devices in wheelchairs is both necessary and attractive. Elders, diabetics, or stroke victims are a substantial group needing permanent cardiac monitoring, without restriction of their already limited mobility. A set of sensing devices was embedded in a wheelchair to monitor the user without his awareness and intervention. A dual-wavelength reflection photoplethysmogram (PPG), and a ballistocardiogram (BCG) based on MEMS accelerometers and on electromechanical film sensors are output by the hardware. Tests were conduced on twenty one subjects, for an immobility scenario. Additional recordings were made for helped propulsion over a tiled floor course, with good results in keeping track of acceleration BCG and PPG. A treadmill was also used for tests, providing a smooth floor and constant speed and inclination. The PPG and acceleration BCG could be continuously monitored in all the tests. The developed system proves to be a good solution to monitor cardiac activity of wheelchair users even during motion.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of surgical masks has become the new normal. The use of these devices in exercise and medical situations has been advocated with the purpose of reducing contagions, but some concerns exist regarding its impact of physical fitness and safety of use. If the use of mask while exercising can cause decreased functional capacity or dangerous hypoxemia is still something we know little of. Therefore, we performed maximal treadmill stress tests in 12 healthy young subjects, with and without surgical mask use, and measured exercise capacity, oxygen saturation (rest, peak exercise and post-exercise) and electrocardiographic changes on a standard treadmill test. Exercise capacity and oxygen saturation levels decreased in peak exercise vs rest in a statistically significant manner when mask was used. ECG changes, although not significant, were present in 3 subjects when mask was used and disappeared when the test was made unmasked. We concluded that masked exercise has the potential to cause decreased exercise load and oxygen saturation and potentially cause diagnostic errors in medical exams.

Purpose: The aim of the study is to define the impact of exercise on a treadmill on static balance and stability of posture in a group of patients after cerebral stroke rehabilitated in a late period, with an application of a treadmill with the function of visual biofeedback. Methods: The examination was carried out in a group of 46 people in a late period after ischemic cerebral stroke. The patients examined were randomly put to a group with intervention (n = 23), in which a rehabilitation programme with an application of a treadmill with the visual feedback function was realized and to a control group (n = 23). They evaluated balance in standing on both feet by means of a force plate, symmetry of load of lower limbs and dynamic balance in Up & Go test. Results: A statistically significant change of stabilometric parameters was observed only in the area of postural sways of the centre of pressure (COP). A significant improvement of the symmetry of load of lower limbs in standing ( p = 0.0266) was diagnosed in the examined group after the end of the programme. After the end of the programme no significant difference between the group with intervention and the control group as for a change of balance of the examined patients was found. Conclusions: In the examined group in the chronic period after cs no significant improvement of stabilometrically evaluated balance was obtained, but improvement of the symmetry of load of lower limbs as well as improvement of dynamic balance were observed.

Opis:
Objectives: To evaluate changes in Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) parameters in individuals with paraplegia following Partial Body Weight Supported Treadmill Training (PBWSTT). Design: Randomized controlled trial Setting: Inpatient rehabilitation facility Participants: Adults with chronic SCI (n = 42). Intervention: Patients were randomly allocated in CR group (N= 20) receiving Conventional Rehabilitation or in PBWSTT group (N=22) receiving both Conventional Rehabilitation and PBWSTT for 4 weeks. Main outcome measure(s): Changes in % predicted PFT parameter for the subject’s age, sex and BMI. Results: With PBWSTT, significant PFT changes were VC (P =.009), PEF (p = .001) and ERV (p = .032). In complete SCI, PEF (p = .026) improved, while in incomplete SCI VC (p = .005), ERV (p = .029), PEF( p = .001) improved with PBWSTT. In upper neurological level of injury (NLI) (T6-T11), PBWSTT improved PEF (p = .004) alone while in lower NLI (T12-L2), with PBWSTT both ERV (p = .016) and PEF (p = .035) improved. Conclusions: With added PBWSTT most parameters including Vital Capacity, the global measure of PFT, improved significantly, especially in Lower NLI and incomplete SCI. The positive role of this noninvasive exercise based intervention in improving lung functions comes as an added benefit to the usual benefit of locomotion. This may encourage researchers to design future larger studies to validate it aiming the inclusion of PBWSTT in routine SCI rehabilitation protocols.

Opis:
Background. Gait velocity is a simple but very essential parameter which may be applied as an indicator of functional efficiency. Gait of stroke patients is characterized by reduced speed. As a result, the patients have significantly limited functioning capabilities, including walking independently outside home. The study was designed to assess selected temporal gait parameters, including gait velocity, stride velocity and swing phase velocity in patients with chronic stroke following a rehabilitation program with the use treadmill. Material and method. The study was conducted in a group of 50 patients with hemiparesis in the late period after stroke. Temporal gait parameters such as: gait velocity, stride velocity and swing velocity were examined. Additionally, 10-metre walk test was measured. Results. While analyzing 10-metre walk test results it was shown that after rehabilitation gait velocity increased by an average of 0.15 m/s (p = 0.0000). Similar results were obtained in terms of gait velocity which had been assessed using a 3-dimensional gait analysis, the average gait velocity increased by 0,14m/s (p = 0.0000). Analyzing stride velocity, both the paretic and non-paretic side it was noted that after rehabilitation this particular parameter increased by an average of 0.05 m/s (p = 0.0019) and 0.06 m/s (p = 0.0052). Similar results were achieved in terms of swing velocity of the paretic side - p = 0.0017. Conclusions. It was demonstrated that rehabilitation program with the use of treadmill enabled significant improvement in gait velocity, stride velocity and swing phase velocity in patients with chronic stroke. Gait velocity is a practical and simple tool to be applied for monitoring of progress in rehabilitation and for assessing effects of gait re-education in patients with hemiplegia in a chronic stage after stroke.
Materiał i metoda. Badanie przeprowadzono w grupie 50 pacjentów z niedowładem połowiczym w okresie późnym po udarze mózgu. Analizowano czasowe parametry chodu: prędkość chodu, prędkości cyklu chodu oraz prędkości fazy przenoszenia. Dodatkowo wykonano test drogi na 10 metrach. Wyniki.

Opis:
Background. Our pilot study aimed to investigate cardiopulmonary differences between vita maxima incremental cycle and treadmill tests among elite youth cyclists. Material and methods. 8 elite youth cyclists (6 male, 2 female; age: 17.125±1.8 years) completed a cycle ergometer test using a road racing bike on a Tacx Smart Flux roller, followed by a vita maxima treadmill test 48 hours later. Aerobic capacity, cardiopulmonary, and metabolic parameters were measured during both tests. Results. Based on the paired sample t-test, and Wilcoxon signed-rank test, the maximal load values (W) on the treadmill were significantly higher (t=3.52; p<0.05) than in the cycle test. Volume of utilized oxygen (VO2; ml/min) and volume of exhaled CO2 (VCO2; ml/min) values (t=4.76 and t=3.45; p<0.05), maximal fat oxidation (Fatmax; g/day) (t=4.34; p<0.05), maximum rate of oxygen consumption (VO2max; ml/kg/min) (t=4.9; p<0.05) and rate of oxygen consumption at lactate threshold (VO2atLT; ml/kg/min) (t=4.04; p<0.05) also showed significantly higher values than in treadmill test. Pearson’s correlation study showed significant correlation between VO2atLT, and most other parameters (VO2, ventilation (VE; BTPS l/min), load at lactate threshold (load at LT), energy expenditure (EE; g/day)). Conclusions. The differences in results may be because of sport-specific adaptation to cycling and the characteristics of running and cycling, such as the different muscle contraction composition (concentric and eccentric) and different metabolic demands. These findings must be taken into account when testing cyclists on a treadmill, and planning their training loads based on these results.
Wprowadzenie. Badanie pilotażowe miało na celu zbadanie sercowo-płucnych różnic przyrostowej vita maxima podczas testów na rowerze i bieżni przeprowadzonych wśród czołowych młodych rowerzystów. Materiał i metody. Ośmioro czołowych młodych rowerzystów (sześciu mężczyzn i dwie kobiety w wieku 17.125±1.8 roku) wykonało najpierw cykl na ergometrze rowerowym z wykorzystaniem roweru wyścigowego Tacx Smart Flux roller, a 48 godzin później test vita maxima na bieżni. Podczas obydwu testów zmierzono wydolność tlenową oraz parametry sercowo-płucne i metaboliczne. Wyniki. Wnioski.

Opis:
Analysis of human gait as well as diagnosis of human locomotion organ should always be conducted with velocity of gait equal to Preferred Walking Speed (PWS). The literature review shows that the PWS value is not the same in real and virtual environment. The aim of this study was to determine PWS values in both environments and to specify values of parameters used in equations enabling PWS calculations on the basis of lower limb length. Methods: Research-related tests involved 40 subjects walking on the treadmill and wearing HMD goggles. The spatial scenery made participants feel like during a walk in the park. The tests included measurements of displacements of the COP, allowing for the calculation of the Lyapunov exponent and Floquet Multiplier. Both coefficients were used to identify stability at various gait velocities. Results: The analysis revealed that the PWS in relation to gait on the treadmill with VR was lower than the PWS without VR. The final stage of research involved the determination of new values of coefficients of the formula enabling the identification of the velocity of comfort of gait in VR. Conclusions: Obtained results proved that PWS in real and virtual environment are different. The lower values were obtained for measurements in VR. On the basis of these results, value of the “a” coefficient, used in PWS calculations on the basis of lower limb length, was re-determined. The new value makes it possible to assess PWS for gait conducted on treadmill in virtual environment, what can be very important in gait evaluation.
