    Transgression is often seen as a negative term; to cross social or ethical boundaries. In this paper, it is defined as ‘blurring of the symbolic boundaries between grandparents and younger generations in terms of the WWII experience’, which leads to living memory of the war, but also to experiencing and re-living the trauma of war and dislocation. It occurs through the immersion of younger generations in family history narratives, memorabilia, diaries and photographs that become a family treasure, owned jointly by the family members. In this paper, intergenerational transgression is analysed as a softand symbolic phenomenon, which on one hand preserves the memory of past, but on the other, cascades the negative experiences onto children and grandchildren. If this is true for WWII survivors, then it should be considered in other cases of long-term conflict and dislocation, particularly in recent conflicts such as Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Understanding the connection between intergenerational transgression of war trauma may aid the process of healing.

    This article analyses Gabriel Josipovici’s novella In a Hotel Garden (1993) in the context of Marianne Hirsch’s notion of postmemory, introduced in her 1993 article Family Pictures: Maus, Mourning, and Post-Memory, and successively expanded in subsequent publications. Insofar as both the writer and the scholar have their own experience of struggle with the inherited memory of the Holocaust, their views on the way the lives of the postgeneration (i.e., children and grandchildren of survivors of cultural or collective traumatization) are affected by their ancestors’ trauma appear to differ. While Hirsch concentrates on aesthetic representation of trauma transmission, Josipovici aims in his book at rechannelling the idea of postmemory into the direction of hope and healing. Interestingly, by doing so Josipovici does not oppose Hirsch but anticipates the evolution of her thinking. Gesturing beyond the dominating tendency in Holocaust studies, still very much alive today, to perceive the descendants of Holocaust survivors in terms of “subsequent generations of trauma carriers”, Josipovici’s stance in In a Hotel Garden seems consistent with the results of scientific research according to which (in)direct contact with trauma may engender a variety of reactions and the link between the horrific experience and subsequent disorders in family members is not deterministic.

    Tekst stanowi analizę funkcji pełnionej przez etnicznych Polaków w międzypokoleniowym przekazie traumy Zagłady w polsko-żydowskich rodzinach. Przedmiotem badania jest literatura postpamięciowa Ewy Kuryluk, teksty-świadectwa drugiego pokolenia o mieszanej genealogii: to znaczy rodziców, z których jedno przeżyło Zagładę, drugie natomiast po wojnie stało się powiernikiem tajemnicy i pomagało opracowywać traumatyczne doświadczenia. W opisie złożonego opracowywania traumy Zagłady pomocne wydaje się psychoanalityczne rozumienie przekazu międzypokoleniowego, a także pojęcia „trzeciego”: współczującego świadka i medium doświadczenia, dzięki któremu możliwe jest ocalenie. Bliskie czytanie trylogii postpamięciowej Ewy Kuryluk pozwala na przybliżenie nieopisywanego dotąd aspektu międzypokoleniowego przekazu traumy.
    This article delivers an analysis of the functions performed by native Poles in the intergenerational transmission of the trauma of the Holocaust in Polish-Jewish families. For its source material, the author has chosen Ewa Kuryluk’s post-memory literature, textual testimonies by representatives of the second generation of mixed-background families: parents, one of whom survived the Holocaust, and the other, who, after the War, became a custodian of the secret and helped to put the traumatic experiences into written form. In the description of the complex processing of the trauma of the Holocaust, the psychoanalytic understanding of intergenerational transmission proves to be helpful. Similarly helpful is the idea of the “third”: a compassionate witness and mediator/transmitter of experience who makes deliverance possible. A close reading of Kuryluk’s post-memory trilogy allows for an inspection of a heretofore unexamined aspect of the intergenerational transmission of trauma.

    Opis:
    François Emmanuel, renown Belgian contemporary writer and practicing psychotherapist, has so far published more than fifteen novels which are all focused on recurring and obsessive questions about memory, heritage and unknown past. The first two of his publications, Retour à Satyah (1989) and La Nuit d’obsidienne (1992) had been written during and little after his stay in Poland at the Jerzy Grotowski’s Teatr Laboratorium in Wrocław. It was also the end-stage phase of the belgitude tendance, the period of intense reflexion about Belgian identity, language, literature and attitude towards the individual and national past. In the same time, an increasing interest in ancestors’ lives in relation in one’s identity issues started in the field of autobiographical writing (récits de filiation, hétérographie, autofiction). Although the writer never openly positioned himself about the belgitude nor has he ever written novels of autobiographical nature, his fictional works reflect the big reflexions of his time’s literature. As well the thematic as the form of Emmanuel’s novels echo contemporary anxieties and illustrate the functioning of memory and transmission.
