Opis:
Within the framework of the Operational Programme Innovative Economy 2007-2013, studies were carried out for improving the effectiveness of using seismic surveys in the prospecting and exploration of gas fields in the Rotliegend formation. The completed experimental seismic surveys provided new, very interesting data on the geological structure of the deeper part of the Rotliegend basin (>4000 m), which is practically very important for prospecting for new gas fields. The interesting results were obtained along virtually the entire cross-section, particularly in two segments: the southern segment – in front of and within the Człopa-Szamotuły tectonic zone (the Szczecin-Gorzów segment) and the northern segment – in the area of the Zabartowo-1 and Zabartowo-2 wells (the Pomeranian segment). In the northern segment, for the first time in the history of studies of the Lower Permian Basin, it was possible to record reflections from the horizon of the aeolian sandstones occurring within the playa silty-clayey deposits (543 m below the top of the Rotliegend formation), which represents a significant achievement from the point of view of prospecting for hydrocarbon resources. This horizon, characterized by favourable reservoir properties, pinches out northward. It is a very important piece of information because systems oflithologic traps may be related to such pinchouts. In the central part of the Obrzycko-Zabartowo profile, in the Chodzież area, a vast structural elevation occurs, approximately 10–12 km wide and with the amplitude of 250–300 m, which may be a potential large structural or structural and lithologic trap. These newly discovered zones of occurrence of gas traps in the seismic profiles made by the AGH University of Science and Technology within the framework of the research project, will be implemented in a detailed seismic exploration during the exploratory work of Polish Oil and Gas Company (PGNiG SA).

Opis:
Neutrophils form the first line of host defense against infections that combat pathogens using two major mechanisms, the phagocytosis or the release of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). The netosis (NET formation) exerts additional, unfavorable effects on the fitness of host cells and is also involved at the sites of lung infection, increasing the mucus viscosity and in the circulatory system where it can influence the intravascular clot formation. Although molecular mechanisms underlying the netosis are still incompletely understood, a role of NADPH oxidase that activates the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) during the initiation of NETs has been well documented. Since several commonly used drugs can affects the netosis, our current study was aimed to determine the effects of selected mucolytic, anti-inflammatory and cardiovascular drugs on NET formation, with a special emphasis on ROS production and NADPH oxidase activity. The treatment of neutrophils with N-acetylcysteine, ketoprofen and ethamsylate reduced the production of ROS by these cells in a dose-dependent manner. NET formation was also modulated by selected drugs. N-acetylcysteine inhibited the netosis but in the presence of H2O2 this neutrophil ability was restored, indicating that N-acetylcysteine may influence the NET formation by modulating ROS productivity. The administration of ethamsylate led to a significant reduction in NET formation and this effect was not restored by H2O2 or S. aureus, suggesting the unexpected additional side effects of this drug. Ketoprofen seemed to promote ROS-independent NET release, simultaneously inhibiting ROS production. The results, obtained in this study strongly suggest that the therapeutic strategies applied in many neutrophil-mediated diseases should take into account the NET-associated effects.

Opis:
In 1973–2011 in Poznań, aphid catches were carried out using Johnson’s suction trap. Since then the suction trap located at the Institute of Plant Protection – National Research Institute in Poznań has continuously recorded the daily and seasonal dynamics of aphid flights. The collected results has been used to establish one of the largest databases of this type in Europe. The data also allow tracking changes in aphid biodiversity under the changing climatic conditions. Three aphid species of Diuraphis spp. were identified: D. muehlei (Börner, 1950) – in 1974, D. bromicola (Hille Ris Lambers, 1959) – in 1988, D. noxia (Kurdjumov, 1913) – in 2003 as a result of systematic and long-term aphid collections. The occurrence of D. noxia presents a particular risk to cereal crops in Poland. This expansive aphid species that originates from Asia and the Mediterranean is a vector of Barley yellow dwarf viruses (BYDV), and has become one of the most important pest of wheat and barley in the world. Changes in climatic conditions that have been observed in recent years in Poland such as hot summer, long and warm autumn, mild winter seem to be optimal for occurrence and development of aphid species from warmer parts of Europe.

A study of interspecific interactions of European (Meles meles) and Asian (M. leucurus) badgers with other carnivores at badger setts was carried out in Darwin Reserve (European part of Russia) and in Ussuriisk Reserve (Russian Far East) in 2006-2011. We used camera traps for the registration of visits of carnivore mammals to the badger setts. Overall, 11 species were recorded. In both reserves, badger setts attract carnivore species during the whole year. Some predators visit badger setts regularly. The visitors can be divided into two groups: species searching shelter, or searching prey. The first group includes raccoon dog Nyctereutes procyonoides and red fox Vulpes vulpes. Raccoon dog was the most frequent visitor in both study areas (34 visits in Darwin reserve and 73 in Ussuriisk reserve). The second group includes lynx Lynx lynx and wolf Canis lupus in Darwin reserve and Asiatic black bear Ursus thibetanus, brown bear U. arctos, yellow-throated marten Martes flavigula aterrima and lynx Lynx lynx in Ussuriisk reserve. Smaller predators are also included into the second group because they can find prey at badger setts too: leopard cat Prionailurus bengalensis euptilura, sable Martes zibellina and siberian weasel Mustela sibirica in Ussuriisk reserve and European pine marten Martes martes in Darwin reserve. No cases of aggressive interactions between the badgers and the visitors were recorded. But we noted two cases of change of sett owners and one case when raccoon dog removed dead badger cubs from the sett

In the north-western part of the Carpathian Foredeep, hydrocarbon reservoirs have developed within lithological and stratigraphic traps of Jurrasic, Cretaceous and Miocene strata. The interrelationship between the sedimentation and erosion processes within heterogenous reservoirs is different from other classic Miocene gas fields. The article describes the results of an analysis of a gas field located in Swarzów–Dąbrowa Tarnowska area, where reservoir rocks are represented by Jurrasic limestones, Cenomanian sandstones and Turonian limestones. Particular emphasis was put on underestimated Jurrasic sediments and karst forms, which may be present in the productive zone and which have not been yet considered as reservoir areas in this part of the Carpathian Foredeep. The influence of testing and drilling on exploitation improvement within that type of the reservoir was also presented.

The article highlights the main developments in the study of state fragility in the period between 2015 and 2019. The goal is to cover the main trends in the study of the subject as well as the most prominent projects of recent years. The article presents the main findings and recommendations of different international agencies, including the reports by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, LSE-Oxford Commission on State Fragility, Growth and Development, United States Institute for Peace Fragility Study Group and the Task Force on Extremism in Fragile States. The article covers the main approaches to state fragility, recent academic novelties and trends in the field. Among these is popularizing the notion of resilience in a set of OECD States of Fragility reports. The fragility trap and regarding state fragility as a syndrome with a set of symptoms is analyzed on the basis of the Commission on State Fragility report. The US agencies’ attitude is also taken into account. The preventive approach towards extremism and fragile states as well as the steps to be taken by different agencies together with international partners are covered in this article. Fragility Study Group, the Task Force on Extremism in Fragile States, and Global Fragility Act are analyzed as interconnected and a part of the same doctrine and political strategy towards the four-S framework implementation. The article acknowledges the continuity in the work of different research groups that culminated in the Global Fragility Act. The need to reconsider previous approaches to the root causes of state fragility is emphasized. The importance of coordinated prevention in fragile states and conflict-affected areas is seen as critical for international security. The article also traces recent adjustments in the attitude toward the main gaps in state functions and the views on the root causes of state fragility and ways to combat the issue and the emerging security, political and economic threats.

Opis:
3D seismic data and wireline logs from thirteen boreholes were used to establish a sequence stratigraphic analysis of Miocene depositional systems of the Otu Field in the onshore area of the Niger Delta. The subsurface facies of the field revealed three sequences that are bounded by four sequence boundaries (SBs) which are interpreted as erosional unconformities with three maximum flooding surfaces (MFSs). Sequences delineated are composed of lowstand systems tracts (LST), falling stage systems tracts (FSST), transgressive systems tracts (TST) and highstand systems tracts (HST) revealing depositional systems deposited during different phases of base level changes. Deposits identified within the LSTs are fluvial channel sands while TSTs capped the LST facies. HSTs are composed of coarsening and shallowing upwards intervals including deltaic fluvial sands. The sequences were deposited in transitional to shallow marine environments. A seismic geomorphological study carried out on all the SBs and MFS 3 shows a relationship between depositional environments, channel type and direction of palaeo-flow in relation to faults. The reservoirs of the LST and HST and seals from marine shale of the TST and HST could form stratigraphic traps for hydrocarbon accumulation in the Otu Field. This study has integrated 3D seismic and borehole log data to develop a sequence stratigraphic framework that would be a profitable means to guide hydrocarbon exploration and production strategies.

Purpose – The aim of the study is to determine whether Poland has fallen into a middle-income trap. Research method – The article uses a critical appraisal of literature and reasoning. Results – The analysis carried out indicate that both the theoretical and empirical foundations of the middle-income trap are very weak. Even if we assume that the trap exists, Poland, with GDP per capita amounting to above $28,000, luckily hasn’t fallen into it, according to most criteria. Hence, that concept should not guide the country’s economic policy. The recommendations for economic policy put forward on the basis of the middle income trap hypothesis will not be appropriate, and may even be counterproductive.

The article presents the results of estimating economic growth depending on the inflation levels in selected countries. The results were obtained by means of regression splines, in particular, cubic splines and a B-spline curve. The method applied helps to identify both the area of Non- Decreasing Economic Growth Rate of Inflation and inflation for which the rate of growth reaches its maximum. The calculations and graphic presentations demonstrate that maximum rates of economic growth were reached in inflation ranges of 5%-15% for Poland and 3%-16% for the G-20 countries studied. The data analysis leads to the conclusion that central bank margins for their accommodative monetary policies in the studied countries can be wider than it is implied by the doctrinal bases of the inflation targeting policy or its more restrictive version – strict inflation targeting.

The paper addresses the problem of overshoot involved in singing accent stylisation. Selected phonetic features indexed as “American” and “Cockney” are analysed in the singing and speaking styles of a British vocalist, Adele. Overshoot, understood as a greater frequency or an exaggerated quality of a given feature, is characteristic of staged performance (Bell and Gibson 2011; Coupland 2007). PRAAT is used to establish the acoustic properties (F1 and F2) of the BATH and TRAP vowels, as well as the presence or absence of the BATH-TRAP split. The results show that Americanisation regarding the BATH-TRAP split in singing is present and the Americanised vowel tokens are “overshot”, having higher F2 frequency compared with the regular British TRAP vowel.
