Opis:
The flow in transonic diffusers and supersonic air intakes often becomes unsteady due to shock wave-boundary layer interaction. Oscillations may be induced by natural separation unsteadiness or forced by boundary conditions. Significant improvements of CFD tools, increased computer resources and the development of experimental methods have again drawn the attention of researchers to this topic. Forced oscillations of a transonic turbulent flow in an asymmetric two-dimensional Laval nozzle have been considered to investigate the problem. A viscous, perfect gas flow was numerically simulated using SPARC, a Reynolds-averaged compressible Navier-Stokes solver, employing a two-equation, eddy viscosity, turbulence closure in the URANS approach. For time-dependent and stationary flow simulations, Mach numbers upstream of the shock between 1.2 and 1.4 were considered. Comparison of computed and experimental data for steady states generally gave acceptable agreement. In the case of forced oscillations, a harmonic pressure variation was prescribed at the exit plane resulting in shock wave motion. Excitation frequencies between 0Hz and 1024Hz were investigated at a constant pressure amplitude. The main result of the work is the relation between the amplitude of shock wave motion and the excitation frequency in the investigated range. Increasing excitation frequency resulted in decreasing amplitude of the shock movement. At high frequencies, a natural mode of shock oscillation (of small amplitude) was observed, which was insensitive to forced excitement.

Solving AeroAcoustics (CAA) problems by means of the Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) or even the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) for a large computational domain is very time consuming and cannot be applied widely for engineering purposes. In this paper in-house CFD and CAA codes are presented. The in-house CFD code is based on the LES approach whereas the CAA code is an acoustic postprocessor solving non-linearized Euler equations for fluctuating (acoustic) variables. These codes are used to solve the pressure waves generated aerodynamically by a flow over a rectangular cavity and by the vortex street behind a turbine blade. The obtained results are discussed with respect to the application of the presented numerical techniques to pressure waves modeling in steam turbine stages.

The paper is concerned with experimental aerodynamic research on the midsection of a 1220mm long turbine rotor blade. Optical as well as pneumatic measurements of the midsection blade cascade have been performed in a suction type high-speed wind tunnel. The results of measurements are analyzed and discussed. Interferograms and schlieren pictures taken in a wide range of isentropic exit Mach numbers and incidence angles exhibit the existence of several phenomena occurring in the transonic flow field at certain conditions concerning the exit Mach number and the angle of incidence. A flow separation taking place at an extreme negative incidence has been found to produce an additional loss of 6%. The presence of the reflection of an exit shock wave on the suction side of the neighbouring profile has been found to have a substantial influence on the losses, since the loss coefficient value has increased about 10% in cases without the reflection, i.e. the cases at a high exit Mach number and a high positive angle of incidence. Several reflection types have been observed and described.

The test with a roughness application on the laminar aerofoil has been conducted in the N-3 trisonic wind tunnel of the Institute of Aviation in Warsaw. The main goal of tests was to investigate the influence of the boundary layer transition triggers on a laminar profile aerodynamic characteristic. For baseline configuration, the natural transition was applied. As a local roughness on the upper model surface, the carborundum strips with different heights were applied. These were positioned on the upper model surface in the front of the shock position occurrence. The Mach number during test was equal Ma = 0.7 and Reynolds number was about 2.85·106 . Tests have been conducted for different model incidence in range 0º-7º. Current article refers partially to the previous study, where aerofoil model with lower quality of surface had been tested. Investigation results from previous work indicated that some of transition positions improved an aerodynamic characteristic by reducing the drag coefficient value and decreasing shock wave unsteadiness in the transonic regime. However, current article indicates that beneficial effects in respect to the baseline configuration are also strictly dependent on the model quality and turbulent triggers size. Improved surface quality of the laminar aerofoil model affected on aerodynamic characteristics with and without turbulent triggers. Resultant aerodynamic coefficients of all tested cases i.e. drag, lift and lift to drag ratio were compared.

Opis:
The paper presents results of transonic flow field visualization over a laminar airfoil in high-speed wind tunnel. Quite recently, considerable attention has been paid to experimental investigations of an interaction between the shock and the boundary layer for aerodynamics applications. The purpose of the paper is to investigate development of the flow separation over laminar airfoil at transonic speeds. In a course of presented studies, the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) method was used for instantaneous velocity measurements of flow field in the test section of N-3 Institute of Aviation transonic wind tunnel. The object of the research was a laminar airfoil inclined at various angles. The effect of the varying angle of incidence on the flow filed was investigated. The freestream Mach number was 0.7. The results of the PIV measurements were analysed in order to identify the type of the separation from the measured velocity fields. Three forms of separation for low, medium and high angle of incidence was distinguished. The results are in good agreement with theoretical models reported in the literature. The study showed that application of quantitative flow visualisation technique allowed gaining new insights on the complex phenomenon of transonic flow over airfoil. The results of the presented research can be used for better understanding of the mechanism of the flow separation process in transonic flow over airfoils and fluid structure interactions.

Opis:
Solutions for turbulisation of a part of laminar boundary layer upstream of shockwave on laminar airfoil in transonic flow were investigated by means of solution of Unsteady Reynolds-Averagd Navier-Stokes equations using as a closure the four-variable Transition SST turbulence model of ANSYS FLUENT solver. This turbulence model has the capability of resolving laminar-turbulent transition occurring in undisturbed flow as well as under the influence of flow-control devices. The aim of the work was to investigate possibilities of improvement of aerodynamic characteristics of laminar wing of a prospective transport aircraft in adverse conditions characterised by occurrence of a shockwave over a laminar-turbulent transition region with separation of laminar flow under the shockwave. The subject is important for application of laminar flow technology, offering economic and environmental advantages due to decreased friction drag, into civil transport aviation. Natural laminar-turbulent transition in the investigated conditions takes place with occurrence of “laminar separation bubble” under the foot of a shockwave and the resulting shockwave is intensive and prone to unsteady oscillations, the “buffet” phenomenon, limiting operational range of flight parameters. In order to counteract the harmful effects of natural laminar-turbulent transition in transonic flow two types of turbulators, placed upstream of the shockwave, were investigated. One of them consisted of delta-shaped vortex generators, producing chordwise-oriented vortices. The other consisted of rectangular micro-vanes, perpendicular to flow and to airfoil surface producing vortices of rotation axes oriented spanwise. Effectiveness of both types of turbulators was investigated for varying height and their location on airfoil chord. Both types of turbulators have proved their effectiveness in tripping laminar boundary layer. The specific effects of the tutbulators, different for each type occurred in the region where laminar separation takes place on clean airfoil. As a result, the changes of lift and drag were different for each type of turbulators.

Interactions between viscous and transonic effects in air flow around a laminar wing were investigated computationally by means of the solution of unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes Equations. The subject is important from the point of view of applications of Natural Laminar Flow technology in modern, economically efficient passenger aircraft. The research was focused on simulations and analyses of influence of turbulence induced by micro vortex generators on intensity of harmful transonic phenomena like strong shock waves and buffet. Two ways of modelling of the effects of turbulators – the micro vortex generators were taken into consideration. The first way consisted in resolving the shape and inclination angle of the generator in the grid over airfoil and setting the non-slip wall boundary condition on the surface of the generator. The second way, taking advantage of the BAY model of vortex generator, was implemented on orthogonal grid without the need of resolving the shape of the vortex generator in the grid. Calibration of the BAY model was aimed at producing similar distribution of vorticity and velocity circulation behind the model of the vortex generator, as obtained for the grid-resolved model of the vortex generator. The calibration procedure resulted, however, in overestimated turbulisation of the boundary layer in the BAY model, compared to the effects of the grid-resolved vortex generator. The flow simulations indicated, however, that turbulisation of boundary layer induced by micro vortex generators can reduce or eliminate the oscillation of strong shock wave and buffet in off-design conditions and that further adjusting of the BAY model is an efficient strategy for modelling the interactions between viscous and transonic effects in air flow around a laminar wing.

The paper presents various approaches to wind tunnel data analysis when identifying the shock wave boundary layer interaction type. The investigation was carried out in the transonic flow regime in the N-3 Wind Tunnel of Institute of Aviation. The Mach number was 0.7 and Reynolds number was approximate equal 2.85 million. The object of the research was a laminar airfoil in configuration without and with turbuliser device mounted on the upper model surface. In order to achieve turbulent boundary layer in front of the shock wave the carborundum strip was used. The effect of the varying angle of incidence on the flow filed was investigated. During experimental research, different means and test methods were applied (pressure measurements, Schlieren and oil visualisation, Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), hot-film anemometry). The results were analysed in terms of the shock wave boundary interaction type. Most of results were in good agreement with theoretical models reported in the literature. The study showed that combination of various measurement techniques should be used in the shock wave boundary investigations in order to achieve more consistent and reliable conclusions. The results of the presented research can also be used for better understanding other mechanisms i.e. the boundary layer shock wave separation process in transonic flow regime.

The aerodynamics of transonic fans is discussed with emphasis on the use of three-dimensional design techniques, such as blade sweep and lean, to improve their performance. In order to study the interaction of these 3D features with the shock pattern a series of five different designs is produced and analysed by CFD. It is found that the 3D features have remarkably little effect on the shock pattern near the tip where the shock must remain perpendicular to the casing. Lower down the blade significant shock sweep, and hence reduced shock loss, can be induced by 3D design but this is usually at the expense of reduced stall margin and increased loss elsewhere along the blade span. Overall, very little change in efficiency is produced by blade sweep or lean. However, forwards lean of the rotor does produce a small increase in mass flow. Radial migration of the boundary fluid on the suction surface behind the shock is shown to play a large part in the aerodynamics near the blade tip.

Flow separation control by Vortex Generators (VGs) has been analyzed over the last decades. The majority of the research concerning this technology has been focused on subsonic flows where its effectiveness for separation reduction has been proven. Less complex configurations should be analyzed as a first step to apply VGs in transonic conditions, commonly present in many aviation applications. Therefore, the numerical investigation was carried out for a Shock Wave-Boundary-Layer Interaction (SWBLI) phenomenon inducing strong flow separation at the suction side of the NACA 0012 profile. For this purpose, two kinds of VGs were analyzed: well documented Air-Jet Vortex Generators (AJVGs) and our own invention of Rod Vortex Generators (RVGs). The results of the numerical simulations based on the RANS approach reveal a large potential of this passive flow control system in delaying stall and limiting separation induced by a strong, normal shock wave terminating a local supersonic area.

The wind tunnel with variable Mach numbers controlled by a single jack is highly desired in the aerospace, automobile and building industry due to its superior controllability and working range. Decreasing the temperature of a test gas is an efficient and economical approach to achieving higher Reynolds numbers that accommodate all working statuses of test subjects, which however, brings new challenges to the wind tunnel design nowadays. This paper proposes a new design concept of a single-jack variable Mach number nozzle based on its particular cryogenic characteristics, as the nozzle is the core structure to achieve variable Mach numbers. The contours of the nozzle under different Reynolds numbers and Mach numbers are modeled and solved by an incomplete elliptic integral, followed by modification with cryogenic characteristics. A 0.3-m cryogenic wind tunnel is utilized as a validation platform for the nozzle design, resulting in designed contours being in line with the measured contours. Moreover, the root means square (RMS) deviations of Mach number 1.3 at the core position are controlled within 0.011 in low and high temperatures, which surpasses the other existing wind tunnels.

Shock wave-boundary layer interaction is one of the most important phenomenon in transonic flows. Due to its complexity it is difficult as well for experimental as for numerical study. The growing potential of CFD is therefore of great importance. Different aspects of shock wave-boundary layer interaction should be studied in different flow configurations. Therefore results concerning profile flow, helicopter rotor at hovering and forward flight and internal flows are presented in this paper. These are to illustrate our ability in CFD in general. Besides flow simulation the development of codes is carried out.
