Research on the sequence Lauda Sion, Salvatorem dedicated to the Corpus Christi ceremony, allowed us to find and analyze over a dozen translations into Polish of this 13th century Latin pattern. It consists of 12 pairs of stanzas, with their parity – according to the poetics of the sequence – is emphasized by the conformity of a sound of the final verses of each pair of the stanza and the remaining verses are connected by adjoining rhymes, usually feminine, accurate, with aab + ccb scheme. We know most translators by name: Stanisław Grochowski, Jan Białobocki, Stanisław Serafin Jagodyński, Father Ignacy Hołowiński, Father Tadeusz Karyłowski, Jadwiga Gamska-Łempicka, Leopold Staff, several translations are anonymous. All Polish translations agree with the original on the content. However, differences appear in the form, structure of the poetic sequence, number of stanzas and in metrics. The common knowledge of the sequence Lauda Sion, Salvatorem, was probably the fruit of the great Eucharistic devotion in Poland, which was marked already in the 13th century, when the Church introduced the feast of Corpus Christi and lasted for the next centuries, up to the 20th century.

The article discusses a variety of opinions related to the first English translation of Adam Mickiewicz’s poem Pan Tadeusz published in 1885 by Maud Ashurt Biggs (1857-1933). The main point for the author is to analyse the scope of the Polish critics’ opinions and attitudes towards this translation. Some of them were issued by well-known experts in literary translation at the time (for example Stanisław Tarnowski), as well as critics who regularly published notes on British literature and culture in Polish periodicals (Edmund Naganowski). The article points out that the translation of Pan Tadeusz triggered neither numerous, nor enthusiastic reviews; it did, however, contribute to the publication of several interesting reflections related to poetry translation.

Na podlagi pregleda prevodov slovenske literature na Češkem in Poljskem v zadnjih sedemnajstih letih avtorica pokaže razlike in podobnosti med kulturno podobo Slovenije v zavesti teh dveh narodov. Obdobje razdeli na dva dela, pred letom 2000, ko za leposlovne prevode iż slovenščine skrbijo predvsem posamezni prevajalci t. i. starejše generacije, in po njem, ko je v obeh deželah zaradi priliva nove generacije prevajalcev opazen bistven porast knijžnih prevodov. Analiza leposlovnih prevodov w knijžni obliki, pa tudi prevodov, objavljenih v periodičnem tisku in na spletu, je pokazala, da je med stanjem w češkem in poljskem prostoru še vedno opaziti bistveno nesorazmerje.
In this review od Czech and Polish translations of Slovene literature in the past 17 years, the author shows diversity and resemblance in the cultural image of Slovenia in the collective consciousness of the two nations. The chosen era of research falls into two distinct periods. In the first, before the year 2000, the translations lied solely on the shoulders of individual translators, members of the „old” generation. The second period is characterized with a great outburst of translated Slovene literature by the young generation of traslators. Trough analysis and comparison of translated books and translations published in journals and on the internet in the Czech Republic and Poland the author draws our attention to the discrepancy in the amount of translated publications. The article explores the possible reasons for these changes and differences in the field of Slovene translated literature in the two related countries.

This paper discusses translations of biblical passages into Kashubian which originated in Evangelical circles between the 16lh and 19th centuries. Although the tradition of translation dates back to the 16th century, translation of the entire Bible, or at least one complete biblical book, which would have originated in this particular environment has not been preserved. Presumably it never existed. The oldest translations of biblical texts into Kashubian were generally based on the German language. The first printed book with texts in Kashubian included, among others, eleven works defined as Psalms and a range of short passages originating both from the Old Testament and the New Testament. This very book was the Simon Krofey’s Hymnal published in Gdańsk in 1586. Translation of The Small Catechism of Martin Luther came out approximately half a century later, and similarly to the Krofey’s Hymnal it included many biblical passages. However, the biggest collection of biblical texts which has survived is dated for the turn of the 17th and 18* centuries. These texts are found in the so-called Smoldzinian Perikopes, containing lessons and Gospels for all Sundays and church holidays. Many smaller passages of the older translation of biblical texts represent only occasional translations of biblical passages incorporated in other religious texts. The first intended and methodical translation of texts from the Sacred Scripture into Kashubian was the collection of so-called Smoldzinian Perikopes. Research conducted on these translations allows to conclude that although authors of these translations did not translate from original texts, but in most cases from the German language, their translations of the Bible are characterised by a high degree of faithfulness to the thought of original texts. Moreover, accuracy and efforts to make the texts comprehensible and literary beautiful grant their authors the best testimony.

The works of Titus Maccius Plautus and his lively and picturesque language (sermo famialiaris full of archaisms and colloquialisms but in perfect harmony with the metric norms), were characterized by a conspicuous presence of loans from the Greek language and rhetorical figures aimed at highlighting the bizarre traits of the characters and over the centuries they have been a challenge for translators from all over the world. The secret of his success that breaks down times and frontiers consist in the richness and originality of his language that continues to influence every form of artistic expression. In this article the Italian versions that range from the seventeenth to the twentieth century are examined, focusing on the versions of Lodovico Dolce and Pier Paolo Pasolini, mentioning some Polish translations of the work of Plautus (Jan Szczepan Wolfram, Gustaw Przychocki, Zygmunt Węclewski) and coming to the conclusion that the result of the translation of classical texts should be a reasonable balance between those two poles that are called the ancient and the modern.

This presentation will deal with the reception of performances, translations and retranslations of Shakespeare’s plays into the Galician language. As is well-known, Galician is a Romance language which historically shared a common origin with Portuguese in the Iberian Peninsula, and which had a different evolution due to political reasons, i.e. the independence of Portugal and the recentralization of Spain after a long partition with the so called Catholic monarchs. As a consequence, Galician ceased to be the language of power and culture as it was during the Middle Ages, and was spoken by peasants and the lower classes in private contexts for centuries. With the disappearance of Francoism in the 1970s, the revival of Galician and its use as a language of culture was felt as a key issue by the Galician intelligentsia and by the new autonomous government formed in 1981. In order to increase the number of speakers of the language and to give it cultural respectability, translations and performances of prominent playwrights, and particularly those by Shakespeare were considered instrumental. This article will analyse the use of Shakespeare’s plays as an instrument of gentrification of the Galician language, so that the association with Shakespeare would confer a marginalized language social respectability and prestige.

The paper sets to explore the specificity of the Slavic translations of Shakespeare with some special emphasis on the prosodic features of Slavic languages. Preceded by a general discussion of the sounds and rhythms of Slavic languages, the paper presents the historical overview of the translations strategies used by translators to deal with the challenges of Shakespeare’s iambic pentameter. Here some of the most important shaping factors are discussed such as the pressure of the Neoclassical and Romantic models or the influence of Schlegel’s doctrine of organic poetry. Secondly, the paper accounts for the establishment of the national canons of Shakespeare’s translations and their impact on the subsequent attempts at translation.

“Versi di un piacere particolare”: Italian Translations of C.P Cavafy’s homoerotic poems – In this article, I ask about the attitudes of Italian translators towards sexual difference expressed in Cavafy’s poems. Above all, I am interested in how translators convey Cavafy’s explicit homoeroticism in a heteronormative culture. Moreover, I examine whether the cultural changes of the second half of the 20th century modified the way Cavafy’s erotic poems were published and translated in Italy. I examine the choice of translated poems, analyze the way in which translators speak about the author’s sexual identity and compare various translations. The analysis shows that translators speak about homosexuality in a hazy and indirect way, suggesting it by periphrases, allusions and motifs that may be associated with the transgression of the sexual norm. It is particularly visible in the early editions which excluded the most explicit poems. Nevertheless, even recent translators tend to avoid using the term “homosexual”.

Polish literature in Korea
Opis:
The history of translating Polish literature in South Korea goes almost 100 years back. In the article Polish literary works translated into Korean have been presented in chronological order. The first Polish literary work offered to Korean readers was Quo vadis by Henryk Sienkiewicz. It was translated from Japanese into Korean language in 1916. Since then Kore-an translators have been presenting Polish literature to their compatriots almost constantly and in many different ways. This also applies to the very difficult moments in the history of Korea such as Japanese occupation (1910–1940) or so called „cold war” period. Around 70 works of Polish literature have been published in Korea so far (not mentioning re¬ editions and several different translations of the same work). Some works have been published several times, translated by different people and published by different publishing houses (for example Quo vadis by Henryk Sienkiewicz, Eighth day of a week by Marek Hłasko, Solaris by Stanisław Lem).

Notes on Foscolo and the English language (1816–1827) – Foscolo never managed to master his host country’s language during his years of exile in London (1816–1827). The vast production of his English years consists almost entirely of works intended to be translated by other people and thus to be considered as provisional drafts. In this paper, the relationship between Foscolo and the English language is analysed and discussed, focusing in particular on his interactions with his translators and on his linguistic vision.

The Old Church Slavonic translation of John Chrysostom’s commentaries on Acts of the Apostles (CPG 4426) is attested in 18 ethica and fragments included in the Old Bulgarian collection Zlatostruy from the early 10th-century Preslav. The Slavonic homilies have many peculiarities in common suggesting that they were translated together presumably by one translator. One of their common features is the frequent use of double translations (Doppelubersetzungen). In the article nearly half of the 90 examples in 10 homilies are examined and divided into four groups – proper double translations, complementary double translations, synonyms, and contextual synonyms. The study shows that in several cases the Slavonic translation is notably consistent and repetitive, but more often it aims at variety and clarity. The examples from the Zlatostruy homilies on Acts are compared to other Old Church Slavonic translations (e.g. to the works of John the Exarch and to other homilies from Zlatostruy), but the similarities are not sufficient for identifying the anonymous translator(s). The use of doublets in the examined texts is viewed both as a linguistic device for a faithful translation and as a stylistic feature typical for the translator of these homilies. However, this phenomenon is attested in many other medieval literary traditions, which makes the Zlatostruy homilies part of a larger textual tradition.

This study is devoted to the problem of the appearance of variants in the translation of the text of the Holy Scriptures on the example of the analysis of Ps. 2:12. The aim of the study is to find out the reason for the occurrence of discrepancies in the translation of this psalm. The significance of the work lies in identifying the genesis of modern Russian translations of Ps. 2:12, as well as the reasons for linguistic difficulties that arise when translating the Hebrew and Greek Psalms into other languages. The results of the research may be used when translating and commenting on the studied text. The main conclusion is that the reason for the appearance of a “dark” place for the modern reader in the second psalm – “Accept the punishment, may the Lord not be angry” – stems from the polysemy of the Greek word “παιδείας”, which can be translated as “education, training, culture’ as well as “youth”. The Hebrew translators have interpreted this verse as “worship purely”, “worship with purity”, “arm yourself with purity”. Some of the translation options for this verse are based on the Septuagint, which gives a literal translation into Greekof the Hebrew text: “Accept / keep the lesson”. The variety of translation options for Ps.2:12results from the polysemy in the Hebrew language, superimposed on the borrowed meaningof the word “bar” from the Chaldean language and on the Greek ambiguity in the recipientlanguage; later on, the complexity of this verse increased even more due to the literalism of the Church Slavic translation. The value of this research lies in comparing the variants of the Russian translations of Ps. 2:12 and clarifying their history.
