The paper treats of legal (normative) pronouncements and their translations dealing with human rights and freedoms from three different countries. The texts chosen for this purpose were fragments of The Constitution of the Republic of Poland, The Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany and The Federal Constitution of the Swiss Confederation. The Original texts (in Polish and German respectively) were compared with their translations into German (two translated versions) and Polish (three translated versions of the German text and one translated version of the Swiss text). The evaluation of the translation solutions is preceded by a characterization of constitutional provisions and the grammatical means used to describe rights guaranteed to the recipients of the legal norm in the original texts. The main focus of the analysis was the use of verbs defining the mandated behavior of the norm addressee. The analysis allowed to ascertain that translations often mainly infract the text-normative equivalence beside the substantive equivalence. Such inconsistencies can lead to misinterpretation of the legal effect of the translated provisions. Therefore, translating constitutional texts requires a detailed juxtaposition of the grammatical means typical for similar the target legal system.

This article outlines the two (only seemingly competing) theoretical approaches operative so far in translation theory to explain text comprehension processes. First, it gives a short description of the hermeneutic approach and the analytic approach. Then, it explains how both approaches can be linked together on the base of the translation-oriented text analysis scheme from Nord. The article ends with an overview of the benefits from this linkage for translation didactics and practice, including CAT-tools and MT.

Целью представленной статьи является анализ специфик перевода современного русского художественного текста – повести-мемуара О. О. Павлова «Школьники» на чешский язык. Авторами представлен перевод как перенос безэквивалентной лексики, реалий, на другой язык при сохранении смысловой и формально-эстетической эквивалентности. На основе употребления конкретных приемов адаптации (транскрипция, аналог, описание, генерализация, калькирование, опущение) рассматриваются спорные или неоднозначные решения перевода выбранных реалий, несущих национальную окраску.
Celem niniejszego artykułu jest analiza specyfiki przekładu na język czeski współczesnego rosyjskiego tekstu beletrystycznego - opowiadania-pamiętnika "Uczniowie" Pawłowa. Autorzy przedstawiają przekład jako przeniesienie nieekwiwalentnego słownictwa, realiów w innym języku przy zachowaniu ekwiwalencji semantycznej i formalno-estetycznej. Opierając się na zastosowaniu określonych technik adaptacyjnych (transkrypcja, analogia, opis, generalizacja, calquing, pominięcie), autorzy rozważają kontrowersyjne lub niejednoznaczne rozwiązania w zakresie przekładu wybranych realiów, które niosą ze sobą narodowe zabarwienie.
The purpose of the presented article is to analyze the specifics of the translation of a modern Russian literary text - the story-memoir of O.O. Pavlov Pupils into Czech. The authors presented the translation as a transfer of non-equivalent vocabulary, realities into another language while maintaining semantic and formal-aesthetic equivalence.  The article considers controversial or ambiguous solutions for translating selected realities that carry national connotations based on specific adaptation techniques (transcription, analog, description, generalization, tracing, omission).

This article is a proposal to think about translation service portfolio in categories of contemporary service provision. As observed in the recent literature of the field, today’s services rely more and more on customisation, interactivity and relation-building. This article presents examples of opening a standard portfolio to opportunities identified by the translator through direct communication with the client. Benefits and limitations of such portfolio modifications are also discussed. The article is an invitation for the readers to rethink their portfolio strategies in search of competitive market advantages.

Opis:
The article deals with the peculiarities of the literary translations of three Polish-language sonnets by Yanka Kupala into Belarusian, Russian and English, performed by V. Markhel, N. Kislik and V. Rich. Particular attention is devoted to the analysis of the specifics of Yanka Kupala's sonnet forms and the description of translation solutions to preserve the form and content of the original, to adequately convey the culturally marked vocabulary. It is shown that the com¬parative analysis of the original texts with their translations contributes to the awareness of the quality and level of the poetic skills of the author and translators, and to understanding of the problems of poetic translation.
W artykule rozważa się cechy charakterystyczne przekładu artystycz¬nego trzech sonetów polskojęzycznych Janki Kupały na język białoruski, rosyjski i angielski. Podejmowane są zagadnienia odrębności form sonetowych J. Kupały oraz specyfiki strategii tłumaczeniowych U. Marchela, N. Kislika i W. Rycz w sto¬sunku do zachowywania formy i treści oryginału, przekładu elementów nacechowanych kulturowo, w szczególności realiów. Stwierdza się, że analiza porównawcza tekstów źródłowych i ich tłumaczeń sprzyja uświadomieniu jakości przekładów, wysokości poetyckiego kunsztu twórcy i oryginalności jego poezji oraz rozważaniu problemów przekładu poetyckiego pod względem zachowania cech artystycznych i językowych.
У артыкуле разглядаюцца асаблівасці мастацкага перакладу трох поль-скамоўных санетаў Я. Купалы (Беларус, Гэй, у свет! і Зямля) на беларускую, рускую і англійскую мовы. Асэнсоўваюцца пытанні адметнасці санетных форм Я. Купалы і спецыфікі перакладчыцкіх падыходаў У. Мархеля, Н. Кіслі¬ка і В. Рыч у дачыненні да захавання формы і зместу арыгінала, перадачы культурна-маркіраванай лексікі, у прыватнасці, перакладу рэалій. Сцвяр-джаецца, што параўнальны аналіз арыгінальных тэкстаў з перакладнымі спрыяе ўсведамленню якасці і вышыні паэтычнага майстэрства творцы і перакладчыкаў, разуменню самабытнасці паэзіі Я. Купалы, асэнсаванню праблем паэтычнага перакладу ў кантэксце захавання яго мастацкіх і моў-ных якасцяў.

Opis:
Learning a specialist language entails developing a number of linguistic competencies, the most important of which is discursive competence enabling proper communication in a particular professional environment. Its development requires that the learner should become sensitive to the pragmatic aspects of specialist language use in a wider discursive context, with particular attention to genre norms forming a discursive polisystem of a given culture. This paper presents specialist text translation as one of the most effective ways of teaching a specialist language by improving discursive competence.

It is a commonly acknowledged fact that sharing knowledge is a fundamental prerequisite for cooperation between individual researchers, as well as between academic written cultures, whose research traditions may be divergent. Even in the case of academic circles enjoying geographical proximity like Polish and German ones, mutual contact may be hindered by a language barrier. The aim of this article is to demonstrate that the translation of Bożena Witosz’s work Linguistic Genology constituted a rich source of academic cognition. The authors highlight challenges and problems they had encounter in translating this monograph, in which, like in most Polish genological works, numerous references to Bachtin’s ideas may be found. In this context, questions about optimal solutions in conveying academic Polish-German terminological differences arise. Another challenge represented the issue of adjusting the message for the final reader, whose point of reference are functional and academic texts in German philological research.

Artykuł dotyczy rosyjsko-polskiego dyskursu prasowego, funkcjonującego za pośrednictwem przekładu. Podstawę materiałową stanowią przełożone na język polski rosyjskie teksty medialne zamieszczane w dwutygodniku (wcześniej tygodniku) „FORUM”. Autorkę interesują więc relacje przekładowe i przestrzeń międzytekstowa jako płaszczyzna dialogu w komunikacji międzyjęzykowej Rosjan i Polaków, prowadząca do poznania opinii mediów rosyjskich. Refleksja nad aktualnym rosyjsko-polskim dyskursem prasowym funkcjonującym za pośrednictwem przekładu winna zatem oscylować wokół udziału poszczególnych tekstów w (językowej, dyskursywnej) interpretacji rzeczywistości, z włączeniem wymiaru aksjologicznego, wartości stosowanych modyfikacji tekstowych wpływających na stopień symetrii obu tekstów, a także możliwości interpretacyjnych, uwzględniających kompetencje (między)kulturowe i komunikacyjne uczestników komunikacji.
The article concerns the Russian-Polish press discourse, functioning via translation. The material basis are the Russian media texts translated into Polish from a biweekly (previously a weekly magazine) FORUM. The author is therefore interested in translation relations and the inter-text space as a platform for dialogue in interlingual communication between Russians and Poles, leading to understanding of the opinions of the Russian media. Reflection on the current Russian-Polish press discourse functioning via translation should therefore oscillate around the participation of individual texts in the (linguistic, discursive) interpretation of reality, including the axiological dimension and the value of the applied text modifications influencing on the degree of symmetry of both texts, as well as interpretative options which take into account (inter)cultural and communicative competences of the communication participants.

Translations have been an interesting part of the history of literature. What has been their function and meaning in different literary epochs? Did they promote new tendencies or influence the creativity of the writers? What has been underestimated so far is the art of translation itself, that is, the development of techniques and styles of translation according to changes in the translator’s work conditions, especially the emancipation, secularization and professionalization of the profession, so that they have been seen as equal in importance to the writers themselves. What should be analyzed are the procedures and practices of translation, which can be interpreted according to contemporary textology. The history of the art of translation is also inspired by contemporary cultural studies, because it regards translation as an institution and focuses on translation discourse, that is, the complex of images, ideas and metaphors that each translator must respect when considering their readers. The tradition of translation is partly different from literary tradition in that the rules of ‘good translation’ promoted at certain times create a codex of a translator’s work.

Since the turn of the millennium, Serbian drama has been increasingly valued and recognized in the post-Yugoslav region and in Europe. In recent years, the process of globalization has become progressively stronger, with an improved infrastructure for promotion that has made possible the crossing of material and symbolic boundaries. This in turn has led to transformations in artistic expression, as well as increasing opportunities for mobility, co-productions, and translations. The status of the drama has been somewhat problematic because of its situation between literature and theatre. Its heterogeneous nature has required the development of an appropriate method of presentation. The performative/stage reading has emerged as a compelling answer.
Na prelazu između milenijuma srpska drama postala je cenjena i prepoznata u postjugoslovenskom regionu i Evropi. Poslednjih godina proces globalizacije je sve snažniji, infrastruktura i sistem promocije su se poboljšali, što omogućava prekoračivanje materijalnih i simboličkih granica (transformacija umetničkog izražaja, kulturna mobilnost, koprodukcije, prevodi). Treba napomenuti da je početak 20. veka (naročito njegova druga decenija) doneo ozbiljnije interesovanje u zemlji i inostranstvu za dramsku i scensku produkciju. Objavljene su antologije savremene srpske drame: Nova srpska drama, Biseri iz upravničkih fioka, koje popularišu dramske tekstove i uvode ih u književni i pozorišni krug, poboljšavajući tako njihovu recepciju. Na taj se način širi svest o ovom stvaralaštvu i povećavaju se šanse autora i autorki da kroz scenske produkcije ili scenska čitanja uđu u glavne umetničke tokove. Poljski prevodioci takođe postepeno postaju sveviše zainteresovani za dramatičare iz Srbije. Status drame može biti problematičan jer se ona nalazi između književnosti i pozorišta. Njena heterogena priroda zahteva pravilan način realizacije. Pozorišni komad treba da se vidi, čuje i govori, a ne da se samo tiho čita. Ipak, postoji scensko čitanje kao pojednostavljeni oblik pozorišta gde glumci performativno čitaju scenario pred publikom. Ovo podrazumeva istraživanje pozorišta kad produkcija nije u potpunosti ostvarena i kad je naglasak stavljen na slušanje teksta, ne na gledanje izvođenja.

The division of texts for the purpose of translation into literary and non-literary ones, based mostly on the dominant language function in a given text type, often leads to a stereotypical understanding of the stance of the translator’s competence. Non-literary text translators who focus entirely on that branch of knowledge that a given text refers to and on related terminology may overlook the cultural and intertextual elements. This not only ignores the intention of introducing them into the text, but also may change the meaning of passages in which they are included. The analysis of a book concerning psychology and psychotherapy: Systems of Psychotherapy. A Transtheoretical Analysis, as representing non-literary texts, and G.K. Chesterton’s detective stories, being examples of literary texts, provides some examples of introducing more or less implicit references to the Bible into psychological discourse and literature respectively. Despite the label of scientific texts, American psychological literature is characterized by numerous hidden quotations from other sources which serve various functions: using the already lexicalised phrase- ology or entering into a polemics with the religious doctrine. Consequently, in translating such texts, translators cannot limit themselves to a thorough knowledge of psychology, psychotherapy and terminology connected with those areas, but must also be observant enough to notice interte- xtual traces and then be able to localize them and interpret them correctly. Otherwise the transla- tion may alter the original meaning or introduce an ambiguity which is not welcome in such texts. Thus ‘intertextual competence’ is by no means reserved for literary text translators for whom this type of expertise is obviously of primary importance.

The present study examines the applying of hermeneutic method within translation process. The examination of the issue draws on the already established concepts of translational hermeneutics, which consider this method as a part of the initial phase of the translation activity. However, the study presents the approach according to which hermeneutic activity is present throughout whole translation process. The author thus examines deployment of Ricoeur’s hermeneutic concept of interpretation and understanding on the complex translation activity. Opis:
The aim of this article is to demonstrate the differences appearing in French and Italian scientific texts and their translations into Polish. The specificity of the scientific text causes enormous difficulties faced by novice translators. On the one hand, one must faithfully reflect the merits of work, and, on the other hand, take care of the appropriate style of the target text. As Stanisław Gajda [1982] states, each discipline produces a completely separate language termed “scientific sublanguage”, and the basic difficulty in the case of translation by people not familiar with the scientific language seems to be the recreation of the specific nature of the scientific language of the source text in the target text. The multidimensionality and interdisciplinary nature of scientific translation should also be considered because only on the basis of interdisciplinary knowledge can the translator choose the appropriate translation strategy.

The study analyses and compares the Polish, German and French translations of Lakoff and Johnson’s book Metaphors We Live By. Being a specialist publication in linguistics, it requires particular precision in translation. Special attention is paid to the ways of rendering metaphors in the target languages (TLs), simultaneously preserving the underlying concepts and making them sound natural to TL readers. As the results show, the translators managed to preserve most of the metaphors making the necessary changes, so the TL examples of metaphors can be said to be both equivalent to the SL ones and adequate in the TL.

The relationship between the word and sound seems best exemplified in song. The indefinite and semantically broad meaning of music becomes more specific and precise thanks to words, which are believed to belong to a more conventionalised semiotic system. However, in the process of singable translation this intrinsic connection between the word and sound may become distorted because of various reasons, including the question of the target context or the profile of target audiences and their expectations. This paper presents a descriptive analysis of strategies used in translating foreign songs presented in four early episodes of the entertainment show Muzyka lekka, łatwa i przyjemna, aired on Polish National Television since the 1960s. Apart from global observations drawn from the overview of translation strategies across the analysed episodes, the paper presents also a more explanatory and multimodal analysis of singable translations of English-language songs and highlights the problem of context-driven constraints.

The goal of this article is primarily to present the translation strategies adopted by Krzysztof Pussman in the course of working on Historyja barzo cudna o stworzeniu nieba i ziemie. The 16th-century apocrypha has slipped into oblivion – it was last discussed by Stanisław Dobrzycki in 1911. Research suggests that the translator-cum-compiler in fact followed the trends developed in his times. A compilation of the results of analyses and elaborations on the language and the way of translating other Old Polish apocrypha confirms this statement. The deliberations presented in this article, ordered by theme (the author divided the material into issues related to syntax, vocabulary, inflexion, rhetoric and style) provide an outline of broad research perspectives related to Historyja barzo cudna… as an independent historic work and in a comparative perspective (with other apocrypha texts of the time and old Polish canonical texts).

The present article attempts to take note of some existing problems with the legal texts translation. The legal texts translation has to take into consideration the fact, that the text is experienced in two ways - translated text is the subject to further interpretation. A translator translating the legal text from Russian into Polish faces difficulties with choosing the proper lexems. Russian-Polish translating dictionaries do not always present all the meanings of the given lexems and first and foremost they do not always consider language of the law. A translator himself has to use in a translation a inner sentence context, which exceeds the context of a word which is completive to a phrase, as well as a translator has to use a surround sentence context and in comprehensiveness a legal language context which often allows to reduce the meaning of translated lexeme in relation to semantic field, resulting from the context of a word which is completive to a phrase.

This article analyzes typical problems that arise when translating scientific and technical texts in the field of geodesy from the Russian language into Ukrainian. The analysis of complex cases that appear in the process of translation of scientific texts gives us grounds to assert that their distribution into lexical and grammatical aspects is rather conditional, since in each language, including Ukrainian, the grammatical is combined with the lexical, and transmission methods in the translation of grammatical forms and structures often depends on their lexical content. The ways of overcoming these problems are suggested, which will contribute to the process of affirming in the scientific style specific traditions, inherent in the Ukrainian language, both at the lexical and grammatical levels. These traditions have taken the back seat under the influence of a long period of the Russian language dominating in the field of science.

The author addresses the problem of translation series, demonstrating that the rich tradition of creating and researching such series focused mainly on structural and model analyses, and usually isolated translations from other reception phenomena related to a foreign text in a national culture. By shifting the attention from translation-only studies to research in a wider scope of reception of a foreign text, such as intertextual relations of originals/translations with national literature/ culture, comments, and the work performed around a foreign text and its translation (e.g. convention of an editing series, anthology editing, canon creation), the author proposes to introduce three complementary notions: translation series, textualisation series, reception series. The author also discusses the proposals on specific examples derived from the Polish reception of Walt Whitman’s poetry.

Text alignment and text quality are critical to the accuracy of Machine Translation (MT) systems, some NLP tools, and any other text processing tasks requiring bilingual data. This research proposes a language-independent bisentence filtering approach based on Polish (not a position-sensitive language) to English experiments. This cleaning approach was developed on the TED Talks corpus and also initially tested on the Wikipedia comparable corpus, but it can be used for any text domain or language pair. The proposed approach implements various heuristics for sentence comparison. Some of the heuristics leverage synonyms as well as semantic and structural analysis of text as additional information. Minimization of data loss has been? ensured. An improvement in MT system scores with text processed using this tool is discussed.

In the article, the problem of text-normative equivalence has been addressed. It was introduced by W. Koller in 1979, but so far it has not been further developed in the literature. Preserving textual and normative equivalence is particularly important in the translation of law texts. Therefore, the question arises about the parameters of equivalence. The article shows that in law acts such objective parameters are the specific attendance and distribution of lexical resources. They allow for a precise establishment of normative equivalents in the target language.

Extraction and Presentation of Bilingual Correspondences from Slovak-Bulgarian Parallel CorpusIn this paper the results of the automatic extraction and presentation of bilingual correspondences from Slovak-Bulgarian Parallel corpus are described. The equivalent phrases are extracted from sentence and word level automatically aligned corpus, filtered, indexed and presented in a dictionary-like interface. The bilingual dictionary database contains 80 thousand phrase pairs consisting of approximately 350 thousand words (per each language). Counting unique word forms, the size is 31 thousand in the Slovak part of the dictionary, 26 thousand in the Bulgarian part.
