The following article discusses the translation problems of a specific kind of lexical units, the phytonyms, which have been defined as the names given to various plants. The main concern are the translation possibilities of phytonyms in the German novel „Der Schrecksenmeister“ and its Polish rendition. The author conceives phytonyms as cultural units. The reason for such conception is inspired by the Eighteenth International Botanical Congress in Melbourne, which established a unified International Code of Botanical Nomenclature. In a non-literary context phytonyms have typically two different functions: they identify an object among other, similar objects and they play a semantic role, which is connected to the so-called semantic motivation (the term used by Prof. Pawłowski, see: Pawłowski 1974) and gives the information about some features of an object. In a literary context the functions of phytonyms are multiplied. Besides the two above-mentioned functions they can be used as allusions and play a connotative role, i.e. they evoke some associations, which influence the perception of the intentional objects in a literary text. According to their connotative role phytonyms can evoke associations concerning the form of a plant, its features, colour, smell and place of occurrence. Phytonyms can also create an illusion that the story of a literary text took place in the real world. The selection of an adequate translation technique to translate phytonyms depends on, on the one hand, an accurate interpretation of the source text, and on the other hand, on an accurate identification of function, which the phytonym has in the source text, and must be adapted to the requirements of translation invariance.

Newer and newer Bible translations from original languages tend to appear regularly. Their authors pursue a plethora of strategies, from interlinear to philological to dynamic ones, taking as the source text not only the Hebrew, but also the Greek canon. Since the 1980s, the books of the Greek Bible have been translated into German, English, Italian, Spanish and French; ten years ago, this group was complemented by the Polish rendering made by Rev. Prof. Remigiusz Popowski. Though enthusiastically received, the text was not much researched. This article is intended to make up for this paucity and present the Polish text of the Septuagint from the perspective of its bibliological process and that of descriptive translation studies: a brief account of its historical background, the author of the translation, a record of editions and the significance for the Polish biblical milieu is followed by a closer analysis and exemplification of strategies and techniques adopted by the author.

The paper is a comparison of three translations of Tadeusz Konwicki’s novel Bohiń. After an overall evaluation of the specific characteristics of the Polish language spoken in the Vilnius area, the author focuses on its lexical aspects and in particular on words reflecting the complex social, political, and cultural reality of the northern Kresy. The analysis of the strategies adopted to render the novel’s realities, conducted on the basis of a classification of realia proposed by Krzysztof Hejwowski, enables the author to indicate how some of these words play an important role in the creation of Tadeusz Konwicki’s fictional and mythical universe.

Due to the fact that the Polish translation of the Harry Potter series by Andrzej Polkowski is one of the most popular and influential in the latest years it seems to be very interesting to find out what qualities make a translation as popular as the original text. Obviously, it can be assumed that there must be a wide range of conditions to be met. However, this paper focuses only on one aspect, namely proper names, which can be found in the books as the plot is set in a non-real world containing a significant number of nouns that were invented for the purpose of the scenery and action. Thus, they pose a real challenge for translators. What is more, the article aims at answering the question of tendencies in the use of translation procedures.

The paper aims at analysing the techniques used in the rendition of the names of supernatural, mythological, and fantastic creatures in the Italian translation of The Witcher saga by Andrzej Sapkowski. After presenting the role played by different classes of names in the creation of an imaginary world based on intertextual procedures, the author identifies eight recurring techniques: borrowing, calque, recognised translation, generalisation, normalisation, lexical recreation, substitution, and omission. The paper shows that though the translation of Sapkowski’s series combines a foreignising and domesticating approach, naturalisation prevails in the rendition of Slavic elements, supplying the reader with a more “international” setting derived from a wide use of replacements and hypernyms.

Przedmiotem analizy w niniejszym artykule są rosyjskie terminy z dziedziny weterynarii dotyczące nominacji chorób zwierzęcych. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest charakterystyka semantyczna rosyjskiej terminologii weterynaryjnej, opis technik tłumaczeniowych zastosowanych przez tłumacza w przekładzie nazw chorób zwierząt oraz próba oceny trafności doboru tych technik. Uwagę skupiono na analizie dwutekstów – oryginalnego i przekładu na język polski, co pozwoliło wyekscerpować interesujący materiał badawczy oraz ocenić trafność zaproponowanych ekwiwalentów. Wyniki badań pokazały, że w danym typie tekstu najpopularniejszym sposobem przekładu okazała się technika uznanego odpowiednika. Stosowanie innych technik tłumaczeniowych okazało się zgubne i prowadziło do zatarcia znaczenia danej nazwy choroby bądź do jej zdeformowania.
This article focuses on the analysis Russian terms in the veterinary field regarding the name of animal diseases. The intention of the article is attempt to characterize Russian veterinary terminology in the context of customs law of semantics, present translations techniques used in the translation of animal disease names and to evaluate the techniques. The attention was focused on the analysis of the original texts and the translation into Polish.

The paper aims to discuss phraseological units as the object of audiovisual translation in the Polish dubbing of Disney’s The Little Mermaid, to discuss the role of phraseological translation techniques, and to present possible translation inconsistencies. A theoretical introduction presents definitions for crucial terms. It is followed by the analysis of the corpus of phraseological units in Disney’s The Little Mermaid and their Polish translational equivalents.
Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie jednostek frazeologicznych jako przedmiotu tłumaczenia w polskim dubbingu Małej Syrenki Disneya, omówienie roli technik tłumaczenia frazeologizmów w tłumaczeniu audiowizualnym oraz przedstawienie możliwych nieścisłości przekładu. Wprowadzenie teoretyczne przedstawia definicje kluczowych terminów. Następnie przedstawiona jest analiza przekładu jednostek frazeologicznych występujących w anglojęzycznej wersji Małej Syrenki Disneya wraz z ich polskim tłumaczeniem.

This article states only briefly the results of the study, whose aim has been to confirm or deny the presence of postcolonial trends in the Polish literary translation through the comparative analysis of culture-bound items. The article aims at exploring the reasons, for which the final results of the study should not be viewed as valid. Those reasons are: postcolonial paradigm and the common exclusion of other factors influencing the translation; unclear situation of Poland within the postcolonial field; restricted definition of the culture-bound items; as well as structuralistic nature of the applied tools.
Niniejszy artykuł dość pobieżnie przedstawia wyniki badania, mającego na celu potwierdzenie lub zaprzeczenie obecności trendów postkolonialnych w polskim przekładzie poprzez dokonanie analizy porównawczej elementów kulturowych. Skupia się on na powodach, dla których otrzymane rezultaty nie mogą zostać uznać za wiążące. Wśród tych powodów znajdują się: paradygmat postkolonialny i częste nieuwzględnianie innych czynników wpływających na ostateczny kształt przekładu; problematyczna sytuacja Polski w naukach postkolonialnych; zawężona definicja elementów kulturowych czy zbyt strukturalistyczna natura samego narzędzia.

In the article entitled ‘The Taming of the Italian Vulgarism or Polish Translators Facing Censorship’ the authors reflect upon the translation of Italian vulgarisms contained in literary works into the Polish language. Two modern teen novels written by Federico Moccia were analyzed for this purpose, namely Tre metri sopra il cielo and its sequel Ho voglia di te. The former was translated into Polish by Krystyna and Eugeniusz Kabatc whereas the latter by Anna Niewęgłowska. The text analyses were performed with the use of TextSTAT. The authors analyze the translations of the expressions within the given contexts and attempt to tackle the questions concerning the translation techniques applied in the traduction of vulgarisms and cuss words as well as shed light on the differences in the translations of the two literary texts.
Dans le présent article, les auteurs réféchissent sur la traduction des vulgarismes italiens en polonais dans les deux romans contemporains pour les jeunes de Federico Moccia : Tre metri sopra il cielo et Ho voglia di te. La traduction du premier livre a été assurée par Krystyna et Eugeniusz Kabatc, tandis que le deuxième, qui constitue la suite des aventures des jeunes héros du premier texte, a été traduit par Anna Niewęgłowska. Après avoir fait une analyse statistique concernant le nombre de mots vulgaires dans les textes originaux et dans leurs traductions respectives, on a examiné les contextes d’apparition des gros mots, ce qui a permis de répertorier les solutions utilisées par les traducteurs de deux textes et les différentes techniques qu’ils ont adoptées dans la traduction des vulgarismes.

Opis:
The article oers an insight into the importance of frames and their features to convey the meaning of Japanese onomatopoeia in the translation process. Based on the present scientic and practical research of the novel by Haruki Murakami Wind-up Bird Chronicles and its translation by Jay Rubin, there have been counted frequencies of use along with clarication of the semantic and stylistic peculiarities of onomatopoeia. Frame analysis, which is used to convey the meaning of Japanese onomatopoeia in the context of the English translation, enables to identify the main characteristics of Japanese syntax, especially the use of particles. Since there is no grammar case in Japanese, onomatopoeic verbs are determined by particles, and predicate plays the main role in the sentence structure. In this case, particles may form additional grammar cases. To visualize his inner world, Haruki Murakami uses onomatopoeias that convey emotions and feelings of the protagonist, as well as the descriptions of peculiar features and sounds of nature. It is the presence of mimetics that enables Murakami to create a complex frame net that intertwines the main storylines through the permanent repeating of some onomatopoeia.

This article compares translation techniques for proper names in Spanish and French within a novel considered fantasy literature. For our study we have analyzed the first novel of the saga A song of Ice and Fire with the aim of establishing a classification of proper names, looking into the most common translation techniques in both languages and comparing them in order to find out common patterns.
El presente artículo compara las estrategias de traducción de los nombres propios en francés y en español de una novela perteneciente al género de literatura fantástica. Para ello se ha utilizado la primera novela de la saga Canción de hielo y fuego, con el fin de establecer una clasificación de los nombres propios, comprobar cuáles son las técnicas de traducción más habituales en ambas lenguas para finalmente compararlas y comprobar en qué casos coinciden.
